Chapter 132 At the Ciyan Banquet
Chapter 132 At the Ciyan Banquet
On the last Saturday of September 2012, Peter Parker got up early and went to the charity banquet, where Aunt May worked, and Peter would occasionally help out when he had time. When he arrived today, he did indeed notice that there were significantly more homeless people than before Kingpin went to jail.
There is no social organization in New York's underclass that can replace Kingpin. The NYPD simply doesn't want to, nor does it have the resources, to deal with these issues. A significant portion of the officers are corrupt cops bribed by Kingpin, and the remaining officers, like George Stacy, who are dedicated to their duties, are not only unwilling but also unlikely to rise to higher positions. The Avengers, aside from Spider-Man, also largely ignore aspects of New York's society.
Peter couldn't possibly resolve all of this alone. Kingpin's imprisonment, the contraction of his forces, and the rise of new gangs would inevitably cause some unrest. If, in this process, as many gangs as possible could be driven out of their former neighborhoods and the unrest ended as quickly as possible, that would be a very good outcome.
If Peter Parker were Superman or The Flash, he could try to clean up the entire city of New York in a single day, but unfortunately he isn't.
“Hey, Aunt May.”
Peter entered the kitchen of the Charity Banquet and found Aunt May, explaining his purpose: "I heard you say last time that there are many more people in need of help at the Charity Banquet, so I came to see if there's anything I can do to help."
“Oh, Peter.” Aunt May smiled with a hint of helplessness. “We can manage. You’ve just started high school, so you should focus on your studies. Mr. Li and I can keep the charity banquet running smoothly.”
“I finished all my homework before I came, you know me.” Peter continued Aunt May’s topic, asking, “Where’s Mr. Li? I haven’t seen him.”
“It’s strange, Mr. Li hasn’t come to the charity banquet for two days now. If he doesn’t come today, it will be three days.” Aunt Mei said with a hint of worry, “I called the police, but they said Mr. Li is fine. If Mr. Li still doesn’t come back, I’ll have to ask George for help.”
“He’ll be alright,” Peter reassured him, then asked, “Is there really nothing I can help you with?”
"Hmm, the new girl in the kitchen is baking cookies. Why don't you go check if they're ready and then help distribute them to everyone?"
Peter nodded in agreement and walked to the oven in the kitchen, intending to ask if the cookies were ready. However, he saw Felicia, who had her silver hair simply tied back, wearing an apron with a little black cat printed on it. She flipped the baking tray over, and a whole tray of cookies fell onto the plate, forming a small mound with the cookies that had been poured on earlier.
She flipped the baking pan back over, turned around, saw Peter, and greeted him with a smile.
Peter was dumbfounded.
"Why...why is Senior Felicia here?"
“That’s a strange question,” Felicia asked, tilting her head in surprise. “Why not? It makes so much sense.”
Seeing Peter Parker speechless, Felicia couldn't help but laugh. She took out another plate of cookies and poured them onto a plate: "Alright, stop standing there like an idiot. Divide the cookies on this plate and hand them out. Since you're already here, you should do something before you leave, right?"
Peter nodded, then looked at the pile of cookies on the plate, and asked while taking out a small dish, "How many cookies did you bake?"
"Right now, it's five yuan per person. I asked the person in charge how many people live here, and then I checked how much flour we have—excuse me."
Felicia poured another plate of cookies onto a baking sheet, placed the baking sheet on a heat-resistant mat, wiped the oil off with a towel, and then divided the cookies into portions with Peter.
“I didn’t know the person in charge here also had the last name Parker—is she your mother? She’s a very nice person.”
“No, she’s my aunt. My parents… died in an accident three years ago, and she and my Uncle Ben have been raising me ever since.” Felicia’s expression froze for a moment, then she apologized softly. Peter just smiled; it wasn’t anything offensive, and he wouldn’t mind.
The cookies were quickly distributed, and the two people carried small plates to the hands of the homeless people at the charity event. Felicia's cookies were enticing just to smell. The pure aroma of baked wheat, combined with the fragrance of butter and sugar, and the still-warm temperature of freshly baked cookies, was a rare treat for these homeless people who often went hungry.
After finishing their work, the two of them also helped solve the problem of the old TV signal being bad at the charity banquet—Peter's efforts were not as effective as Felicia's two taps.
Just before noon, the message finally arrived. Peter took out his phone and read the message. The NYPD's Harlem precinct had been vandalized; the detention cell where the superhero known as Wonder Man was being held had been damaged. This news, of course, wasn't from the media, but from Detective Jessica Jones.
it's time.
Peter and Felicia exchanged a glance. Peter first told Aunt May that he had to leave, and after a while, Felicia also said goodbye. After all, the two of them were just volunteers, not charity event staff, so Aunt May didn't stop them. She just felt it was a bit of a pity that the two children should have stayed for dinner.
Peter, having climbed to the top of the banquet hall, took out his old battle suit that he had hidden. Just as he finished putting it on, he heard a sudden voice: "You're changing clothes here? This doesn't count as a private space."
Peter's spider-sense's inability to detect danger and therefore remain silent has once again caused him trouble. Startled by Felicia, who had already changed into her black cat uniform, Peter touched his chest and said, "I'm pretty sure you weren't here when I put my pants on."
“Who would have thought a boy could change clothes slower than a girl?” Felicia laughed as she sat down on the edge of a flower bed. “By the way, he has a nice figure.”
"……Thanks."
"This time I'm really praising you."
Felicia stood up and said, "It would be too slow for me to get there by myself. Could I hitch a ride?"
“If you don’t mind me putting my arm around your waist…” Peter looked at Felicia, who was just smiling, “It’s no problem.”
"So the plan is to have our Wonder Man cause a ruckus, and then we'll go and rescue all those poor souls who were subjected to human experimentation?"
"That's not just a person with superhuman strength."
Spider-Man, now wearing his mask, and Black Cat leaped from the roof of the Ciyan Banquet Hall. Spider-Man grabbed Black Cat's waist and swung towards the Viper Security Company's office road.
"Those are the defenders of New York."
Spider-Man who doesn't work hard will become Black Cat's plaything, manipulated by Black Cat.
