Kobold Wizard's Journal
Chapter 358 Bread and Wine
Chapter 358 Bread and Wine
Ruger frowned from time to time. The title of "God of Knowledge" was a bit too grandiose. Knowledge often held extraordinary significance in the world of wizards. Then, hearing that it was an abbreviation for "God of Knowledge Dissemination," Ruger rolled his eyes. He felt that these wizards who played with faith had a habit of exaggeration. Like the one who kept mice before, who wasn't even a formal wizard, yet his believers' prayers claimed that he was the center of the endless sea and omnipotent.
Actually, after Old Renser left, Ruger had consciously controlled his habit of rolling his eyes. After all, he was not as comfortable outside as he was in the small apothecary, so he had to be careful. However, after coming to the Endless Sea, if he didn't control himself, he would definitely roll his eyes back to the City of Burning Blood. There were just too many places worth rolling his eyes at.
If old Lenser were to come here, his eyes would probably hurt from flipping them so much.
For example, the conflict and grudges between those two supreme gods who are sandwiched in the middle of the Chaotic Star Sea are not simply a territorial dispute as Luger thought. The struggle for the power of faith is not the source, but rather a long-standing grudge.
Normally speaking, these things should be kept secret, both in terms of the length of time they have been kept and the level of power involved.
But in Mahama's words, the insults leveled against the God of Knowledge by the Three Flames Shrine served to unravel the mystery. The followers of the Three Flames Shrine often referred to the God of Knowledge as the God of Bread, a petty fraudster. This name is the origin of all the conflicts.
It is said that the two were even good friends during that distant and vulnerable period.
Until one day, the God of Knowledge suddenly realized something, changed his path, betrayed his friends, and made the choice to become a god of cooking and to step into the realm of fire. In order to make the change faster and more smoothly, he also deceived the already pitifully few believers of the Three Flames Temple and incorporated and borrowed their fire-related faith path.
Thus, the two began to break ties, though this was merely a rumor circulating among the wizard apprentices of the Three Flames Divine Palace.
Compared to the ever-powerful Three Flame Temple, the god who wields strange flames—whose true full name is unknown—the God of Knowledge, this weaker being, is remarkably gentle. Mahama cites some of this being's actions, such as during the time of the so-called God of Cooking, surviving amidst many powerful beings, simply spreading cooking-related knowledge and some beautiful recipes to his followers, most of whom were chefs—an insignificant little god. But later, this being expanded his domain, teaching butchers slaughtering techniques, imparting knowledge of raising different pack animals to pack animal trainers, and, as time passed, even beginning to teach farmers planting techniques.
At some point, a god of cooking gradually transformed into a disseminator of knowledge, and changed his name to become the god of knowledge he is today.
Aside from friction with his old adversaries, this god of knowledge has had almost no battles or disputes with other seas, and even restrains his subordinate gods and believers.
According to the God of Knowledge, the one in the Three Flames Palace is the treacherous and wicked one. In fact, the Three Flames Palace was established with the help of the God of Knowledge. However, according to the tradition of the Endless Sea, the specifics are unknown.
Ruger curled his lip; after all, those floating in the sea were all big talkers.
They've probably gotten used to fooling their followers, so exaggeration has become instinctive.
"Maybe we don't need to look for a tavern."
Ruger suddenly spoke up.
Some tavern owners were carrying things out, and more bonfires were set up in the streets and alleys. Large pieces of roasted meat dripped with oil. It seemed that no one would go to the tavern today. Amidst laughter and chatter, some people were waving to Luger and Mahama.
Mahama slowed down upon seeing this scene.
An elderly man dressed in coarse cloth raised his hand and slapped the person who was waving on the head. He then jogged over himself, his smiling face filled with respect.
Although Rug and Mahama have shed their wizard robes and are no longer mistaken for messengers of God, Rug's appearance and Mahama's unusual physique still lead people to believe they are divinely ordained.
"My lords, please join us for a meal. All the restaurants and taverns are empty today, so we've prepared plenty to make sure you're well-fed. Old Badu's barbecue is one of the best on this street..."
The old man bowed respectfully, carefully choosing his words, but clearly he didn't know how to use roundabout language.
Moreover, the rumor that those gifted by the gods have a large appetite has become deeply ingrained in people's minds.
Mahama looked at Rug.
Luger smiled, tossed out two gleaming silver moon coins, and headed straight for the nearest campfire.
The old man was stunned for a moment, then caught it with a sense of trepidation.
The two were quickly given a private, undisturbed seat.
"Look."
Ruger raised the glass he had just received and gestured for the big guy to look at the end of the street.
As soon as Mahama sat down, she turned her head upon hearing this, and her already large eyes widened immediately. Even the girl who came to deliver the barbecue couldn't interrupt their furtive glances at the street corner.
The wizard Zorn, who had been missing for a while, was now dressed in casual clothes, singing and dancing on the adjacent street. He tilted his head back and drank a large glass of wine in one gulp, which caused a cheer. Then, the wizard linked arms with two ladies and began to dance wildly in circles, kicking his feet, just like the people on the street. The two ladies, one around twenty years old and the other around thirty, danced and laughed, and seemed to really enjoy the wizard Zorn's dance moves.
Ruger looked into the distance, picked up a piece of hot roast meat, and stuffed it into his mouth.
Mahama's stunned expression was quite amusing.
But this is not his fault. He is a formal wizard. Not only is he drinking cheap wine, but he is also dancing with ordinary women whose hair is stuck to their foreheads with sweat after a busy day. This is too rare, or rather, too shocking.
"This……"
Mahama, perhaps having met more formal wizards, was even more astonished and seemed at a loss for words.
"This barbecue is very good."
Ruger casually said, pushing the plate full of roasted meat, which was placed on the stone stool, toward the other person.
Since the two of them sat down here, leaning against a fairly clean wall, the old man by the campfire had already arranged for people to keep bringing them drinks and different kinds of roasted meat.
"This one is good too. It seems to be some kind of fish, and it must be a big one..."
Ruger said again as he ate heartily.
He could even hear the Zorn wizard's hearty laughter from the street corner across the street.
"Did that demon and those apprentice wizards count as an incident?"
Ruger picked up his glass and asked the question that had been lingering in his mind for a long time.
After experiencing three demon-hunting missions or one major event, one would have the right to choose what kind of demon-hunting wizard to become, and he had not forgotten this.
Mahama was also looking back at the source of the hearty laughter, and turned around upon hearing this.
"Of course not, it won't even be recorded..."
As she spoke, Mahama stuffed some grilled meat into her mouth.
Ruge smiled slightly, reached out and grabbed a small wine barrel, and poured a clear, pale green liquid into Mahama's wine glass.
"This place is so joyful, it must be because of God, right?" Ruger said softly.
Mahama paused for a moment, then nodded.
In the endless sea, whether it's laughter or strange reactions, these ordinary and common things are all inextricably linked to the gods of various places. They have their own beliefs and different paths, and everything is born from the gods.
“I’ve heard that wizards don’t become gods,” Ruger said softly, “but rather gather the power of faith by creating gods before them… So, could it be that at some point, they lose sight of themselves…”
"Of course it's possible, otherwise those guys in the God Inspection Council would be too leisurely."
Mahama took a big gulp of wine, let out a long breath, and resolved Ruge's doubts.
Another burst of exaggerated laughter came from afar, drawing Luger and Mahama's attention once again. They saw some people jeering and pouring wine for a formal wizard. Perhaps to encourage him, a shy barbecue girl was giving the wizard Zorn a passionate kiss on the cheek.
A row of enormous wine glasses had already been lined up amidst the cheers.
