Chapter 360 The Black Dragon Emperor and the War Between North and South

Chapter 360 The Black Dragon Emperor and the War Between North and South
Carlton Canyon serves as a link and barrier between the southern and northern continents.

The Frank Empire's army marched from north to south, crossed the Grand Canyon, and arrived at the Kingdom of Veric in the southern continent.

Before the Kingdom of Veric could react, the war broke out quickly, and in less than half a day, Veric had fallen.

It wasn't because Veric was weak; Veric also had his own witch. Unfortunately, the Frank Empire's attack was too fierce and a surprise attack, catching Veric off guard. The king announced the country's surrender in the shortest possible time.

After the fall of Verik, the Frankish Empire's army received local supplies and expanded Verik's forces into its own, preparing to attack the neighboring Kingdom of Titus.

The Kingdom of Titus was adjacent to the Holy Empire, and upon receiving word of this, it immediately sought help from the Holy Empire.

In order to prevent the war from spreading to the Holy Empire's homeland and to find out Jessica Frank's true intentions, Li En decided to personally lead the army to support the Kingdom of Titus.

The Imperial Army had previously suffered a protracted civil war, which severely weakened the army. Only 30 of its elite troops were truly capable of fighting, 20 of whom came from the North.

These troops had to remain in the Empire to guard its high walls. Li En only brought 10 witches, 500 members of the Dawn Knights, and 1 new soldiers.

These 10 witches are: Dorothy the Legendary Witch, Sophie the Ice Witch, Fura the Fire Witch, Ellie the Hell Witch, Cameron the Doll Witch, Ashe the Barrier Witch, Dora the Disease Witch, Aisley the Forest Witch, Milia the Gourmet Witch, and Blair the Thread Witch.

The first two were of noble status, already being Li En's empresses, and theoretically should not have participated in the war, but they both volunteered to fight, wanting to share Li En's burdens.

The army entered the Kingdom of Titus from the border.

King Bedal of the Kingdom of Titus had sworn allegiance to the Holy Empire, and the kingdom was actually a vassal state of the Holy Empire. Therefore, it adopted the Holy Empire's language, customs, and even beliefs.

King Bedar was deeply moved to see the emperor come in person, but upon seeing that the army numbered only a little over 1, his expression turned melancholy.

"Your Majesty, I am very grateful for your visit, but the Frank Empire is coming in force, claiming to have 50 troops stationed in Verick."

“King Bedal, you need not worry. Our great Emperor will not come empty-handed. Queen Dorothy and Princess Sophie are both outstanding witches and will never allow the Frank Empire's army to set foot on Titus.”

"That's what the Corps Commander Kob said."

"Princess Dorothy, Princess Sophie?"

King Bedal's eyes lit up as he realized that Li En had brought both queens with him.

Dorothy's fame is known throughout the continent; almost everyone knows this legendary witch.

Sophie also became famous for becoming Queen of Li En.

"If that's the case, I believe His Majesty the Great Emperor will surely be able to save Titus from this predicament."

King Bedal remarked with emotion and prepared a grand welcoming ceremony and ball for Li En and the others.

Li En refused the ball and led his army to join forces with Titus's garrison, intercepting Frank and Verick's combined forces at the border.

A cold wind swept across the withered grassland, making Li En's scarlet cloak flutter loudly.

He stood on a low hill, his fingers under his iron gloves gripping the hilt of his sword, gazing at the enemy troops gradually gathering in the distance.

Behind him, the banners of the Holy Empire Legion fluttered in the wind, with the two witch queens, Sophie and Dorothy, riding on their horses on either side of him, while Alexander obediently followed behind Dorothy.

“The Earl of Titus, Ronan Phillips, has arrived,” Cobb whispered to him.

Li En turned his head and saw a troop of cavalry galloping towards him from the west.

The lead knight's armor was covered in dust, but the golden lion engraved on his breastplate was still clearly visible, the insignia of the border guards.

Count Titus was thirty years older than Li En, with a gray beard peeking out from under his helmet, and his face marked by the years and the marks of war.

"His Majesty the Emperor of the Holy Empire."

Ronan Phillips reined in his horse, his voice hoarse like a whetstone, dismounted, and knelt on one knee.

"Thank you for supporting Titus and fighting alongside us. The people of Titus will forever remember your kindness, and your greatness will be sung throughout the continent."

Ronan Phillips initially did not believe that the Holy Empire’s emperor would personally come to support Titus with his empress. But when he saw Li En, he realized that the emperor’s prestige was far beyond that of his own cowardly king.

As Ronan Phillips dismounted and knelt, the soldiers behind him also knelt and shouted in unison.

"Your Majesty, Titus will forever remember your kindness, and your greatness will be sung throughout the continent."

Li En nodded slightly. "Rise, Earl Ronan Phillips."

Ronan Phillips stood up, and the guards followed suit.

Ronan Phillips then followed Lee's gaze toward the plains east of the border.

On the distant horizon, a dark mass of shadows moves slowly, like a spreading plague.

Even from miles away, one could feel the slight tremors of the earth, the vibrations caused by the march of thousands of soldiers.

"Scouts report that the total number of coalition forces exceeds 10."

Li En's voice was calm and restrained. "Verick's heavy cavalry and Frank's longbowmen, along with at least twenty siege engines."

Ronan Phillips spat.
"Damn it, we only have 30,000 men, and most of them are infantry."

"But we have the advantage of terrain."

Li En pointed to where they were standing. This was a natural strategic pass, with steep cliffs on both sides and a plain only about 500 yards wide in the middle.

Li En's engineers had already constructed three simple earthen walls and trenches on the front, and the archer positions were also set up.

"Does His Majesty intend to defend to the death?"

Ronan Phillips frowned slightly. "You haven't fought Verric's cavalry before. From my past encounters with them, I know them quite well. Against Verric's cavalry, static defense is suicidal. One charge from them can break through our lines."

Li En's lips curled into a slight smile: "That's why I need your border cavalry as the main force. While the enemy's main force is tied down by your infantry, my cavalry will attack their command center from the flanks."

The two commanders exchanged a glance, needing no further words. Both were veterans who had seen dozens of battles and knew that when outnumbered, only a surprise attack offered any hope of victory.

Moreover, Count Ronan Phillips knew that Lyon had not yet used his trump card, and the witch's power was enough to change the course of the battle.

As the sun set, the vanguard of the allied forces had reached the other side of the plain and began to set up camp.

Countless bonfires were lit in the twilight, like stars falling to earth.

Li En stood on the front earthen wall, watching the enemy's formation gradually take shape.

The allied camp was perfectly orderly, with a huge commander's tent at the center, surrounded by camps of heavy cavalry. Their warhorses were all carefully selected steeds, their coats gleaming like silk even in the dim twilight.

“Your Majesty, you should rest.” Cobb handed him a glass of warm ale.

"Tomorrow will be a fierce battle."

Li En took the glass of wine but didn't drink. His gaze remained fixed on the enemy camp in the distance: "Send the order down: double the sentry posts, and all officers must wear their armor at all times. I suspect the enemy will launch a night attack."

As it turned out, Li En's judgment was correct.

Just past midnight, a squad of Verricul light cavalry attempted a surprise attack on the archers' positions to the north, but were spotted in time by alert sentries. After a brief exchange of fire, the raiders retreated, leaving behind a dozen or so corpses. But this was merely an appetizer before the great battle.

At dawn, the war horns resounded across the plains.

Earl Ronan Phillips immediately rose, donned his full armor, and put on his helmet. His longsword, "North Wind," was razor-sharp, its blade gleaming a cold blue in the morning light. As he rode to inspect the lines, the soldiers straightened their backs and struck their shields in salute. These northern men trusted their earl and were willing to die for him.

“Remember your training!” Ronan Phillips’s voice echoed between the ranks. “Hold formation, protect your brothers. Today we fight not for glory, but for our homes, for the safety of your wives and children!”

The soldiers' roars were deafening. Just then, the enemy's war drums began to beat, their deep, powerful rhythm like the heartbeat of death.

The allied forces surged forward like a tidal wave. At the forefront were Frank's infantry phalanx, their heavy shields forming a moving wall, long spears protruding from the gaps like a steel hedgehog. Behind them were the formidable Frank longbowmen, their six-foot-long yew bows capable of piercing armor from three hundred yards away.

"Archers, prepare!" Ronan Phillips's command was relayed through the horn.

A thousand northern archers drew their bows, arrows pointing diagonally to the sky. They used shortbows, which had a shorter range than Frank's longbows, but were more lethal at close range.

"put!"

The first volley of arrows soared into the air, tracing deadly arcs before raining down on the enemy ranks. The Frankish shield wall immediately rose, blocking most of the arrows, but many still found gaps, and screams began to echo from within the enemy ranks.

The Franks retaliated quickly. Their longbowmen stopped at a safe distance and neatly drew back their massive bows, which required hundreds of pounds of force to draw.

"Raise your shields!" Ronan Phillips shouted.

The next second, the sky darkened. A black cloud of thousands of arrows swept in, striking the shields and armor of the defenders with a sickening thud. Many soldiers fell, some shot through the eyes or throats and killed instantly; others writhed in agony on the ground, arrow shafts embedded in their limbs or torsos.

"Medics! Carry the wounded away!" officers roared to maintain order. "Second platoon, fill the gap!"

The arrow rain lasted for a full ten minutes, and the defenders' lines began to crumble. Just then, Verric's heavy cavalry moved out. These fully armored knights and their warhorses were like moving iron towers, quickly outflanking the allied forces from the right flank and charging straight at the defenders' left flank.

Li En led the Knights of Dawn and the heavy cavalry of the Imperial New Army into battle.

The bugle call changed, conveying new commands. The heavy cavalry hidden in the valley behind them charged out like arrows, intercepting the flank of Verick's heavy cavalry.

The two cavalry units clashed violently, the sounds of metal clashing, horses neighing, and warriors roaring mingling together.

Alexander transformed into a giant dragon, its black wings spreading wide, blotting out the sky. She breathed out dragon fire, and the flames instantly ignited the Verrict heavy cavalry.

Li En took the lead, his longsword drawing a dazzling trajectory in the morning light, and in a single exchange, he cut down a Veric Knight.

Li En didn't even need to deploy the labyrinth domain. Under the leadership of the dragon Alexander, the army's morale soared, and they quickly routed Vikrie's heavy cavalry, sending them fleeing in disarray.

The army pressed its advantage, storming directly into the command center of the Vikrie and Frank coalition, sweeping everything in its path and pushing the battle line from the Titus border to the heart of Vikrie.

The 10-strong army was already in complete disarray when one-fifth of its troops had died.

To demonstrate his strength to his father, Alexander not only unleashed the Flame Dragon's Fury, but also the Venom Dragon's Fury and the Corruption Dragon's Fury, quickly turning the battlefield into a fiery inferno.

To ordinary people, the power of a dragon is nothing short of a nightmare.

As the sun set, it dyed the entire battlefield crimson.

Titus sounded the victory horn, and all the Titus people shouted in triumph.

On this day, Lyon Moria led his dragons and 1 troops to defeat 10 enemy soldiers, achieving godhood in one battle, and his name as emperor spread throughout the entire Kingdom of Titus.

From then on, Titus called Lyon Moria the Black Dragon Emperor.

And so the real war between the North and South continents began.

……

Empress Jessica Frank, far away in the Northern Continent's royal court, received news of the defeat.

"Your Majesty, Emperor Lyon Moria of the Holy Empire personally led the dragon and witch legions and drove our army back from Carlton Canyon!"

The messenger knelt in the main hall, his face tense as he spoke.

"What? The army has been driven back into the canyon?"

"How is this possible? Didn't we occupy Vikri?"

The ministers talked a lot.

The messenger continued, "Vickery has been reclaimed by Emperor Lyon Moria, and the King of Vickery has sworn allegiance to the Holy Empire."

The ministers in the hall all looked surprised, unable to believe that the Emperor of the Holy Empire had taken back all the territories they had conquered in such a short time.

"They have dragons and witches, which is not surprising."

The wise man stood on the throne and spoke.

Jessica Frank nodded slightly, resting her chin on her hand as if deep in thought.

A moment later, the 18-year-old empress stood up and addressed her ministers.

"I will personally lead the expedition."

"Going into battle personally? No, no, Your Majesty, that's too dangerous. The enemy has a giant dragon."

The ministers objected, hoping that Jessica Frank would prioritize the greater good, since unifying the entire northern continent was already a legendary achievement, and there was no need to conquer the southern continent as well.

“Your Majesty, as long as we can rule this continent, you can still be a legendary empress. We really don’t need so much territory.”

"Yes, Your Majesty."

Despite the advice of others, Jessica Frank's gaze remained unusually firm.
"Once you've decided to do it, there's no turning back."

"I always teach the saintesses to be loyal to the empire, to uphold their faith, and to remain steadfast in their loyalty!"

"You ask me why these saintly women fell into evil and became witches?"

"Hey! They were witches to begin with. The so-called corruption is just human prejudice. Look how well they govern the kingdom."

"Believe me, one day, all the witches in this world will become saints!"
