"I understand. Everyone, be on high alert. Our battle is about to begin. Let those monsters see the might of us Northern warriors."
"Roar!" The soldiers roared, their voices filled with fighting spirit.
139. Battle of Hailin City
After crossing two streets, a wide avenue suddenly opened up before me.
At the end of the avenue stood the inner city wall, which, though not as magnificent as the outer city, possessed its own solemnity and majesty.
Just then, a series of deafening shouts of battle surged in from afar like a tidal wave.
Looking closely, one could see a group of sea monsters of various shapes and ferocious faces, frantically attacking the defensive line, attempting to break through the barrier and flood into the inner city.
"Attention everyone! Quickly form defensive formations! Musketeers, prepare to fire!" With Claudia's command, the soldiers immediately sprang into action, each fulfilling their assigned duties.
"Thump thump thump thump!" In the ranks, the outermost heavily armored soldiers with shields squatted down, steadily raising their shields to form an indestructible barrier.
Behind them stood soldiers armed with spears and swords, ready to strike at any moment.
The musketeers quickly formed a firing line, each soldier holding a standard posture, setting up their muskets, the dark muzzles like the gaze of death, coldly aiming at the blue-skinned sirens.
Master swallowed hard, feeling both nervous and expectant.
He knew that he was about to witness the power of those amazing firearms again.
"First volley, fire!" With Fiorena's command, the musketeers pulled the triggers.
"Bang bang bang bang bang bang!" A series of rapid gunshots rang out, making people's eardrums hurt.
The attacking sirens suddenly heard this unexpected sound behind them and turned around curiously.
However, the moment they turned around, the sirens at the back were all shot and fell to the ground. They didn't understand how they died until the very end. Their "death" was just too fast!
"Quack quack quack quack".
The sirens let out strange cries, as if they were communicating with each other.
Just then, Link spotted a very conspicuous figure among the sea monsters.
It was a female siren with her upper body exposed, her fair and tender skin seemingly delicate enough to be broken with a touch, with only two seashells covering her full breasts.
That face and figure were enough to arouse any man's criminal desires; she was simply too tempting.
However, when the gaze shifted to her lower body, all the allure vanished instantly.
Its lower body, resembling that of a fish, was covered with scales, and its back and head were adorned with decorative fins.
What was even more chilling was that the blood on the two knives in her hands was dripping down.
"Is that the Naga Siren you were talking about?" Link asked Master next to him for confirmation.
Master's gaze followed the direction Link was pointing, and for a moment his expression froze: "Yes! That's the Naga Siren, no doubt about it!"
The Naga sea monster seemed to shout something in its own language, and soon a group of merfolk ferociously attacked them.
These fish-men are short in stature but possess immense strength and are extremely ferocious.
"Prepare for the second round of firing!"
Fiorena gave another order.
The two ends of this avenue are less than 300 meters apart, and at this moment they are less than 200 meters apart.
Fortunately, these guys are slow, otherwise they could have reached the defensive line very quickly.
That will be the close-quarters combat that Link finds most troublesome.
Once close combat ensues, casualties will likely be unavoidable, which is the last thing Link wants to see.
"Second salvo, fire!"
With the order given, the musketeers pulled the trigger again.
"Bang bang bang bang bang!" The attacking murlocs were easily killed one by one by the rapidly flying bullets.
However, the rather large merfolk mixed in with them proved to be exceptionally troublesome.
Their bodies are not as fragile as those of ordinary fishmen; instead, they possess a layer of armor-like material.
Fortunately, this layer did not cover their entire bodies, and after being hit several times, the giant fishmen still fell to the ground and could not get up.
"Swipe!"
Suddenly, a jet of water shot out and crashed violently into the shields of the guards who were forming a defensive line at the front.
Instantly, several heavily armored shield soldiers were swept away by the water column, falling heavily to the ground and groaning in pain.
"Damn it!" Link looked in the direction the water jets were shooting and saw turtles the size of small cars. Sharp spikes stood out on their shells, making them look terrifying.
However, they move very slowly.
“Fish turtles!” Master immediately recognized the monsters and shouted.
"The heavily armored shield bearers who were scattered must immediately regroup and form a defensive line. Musketeers, be careful not to get your muskets wet!"
Although Link and his crew's muskets were made of iron and could still be fired even with a little water, that might not be the case after being drenched by such a huge jet of water.
If the musket gets damp, it may become unable to fire properly, and they will lose their most important means of long-range attack.
"Lord Link, our bullets have absolutely no effect on these turtle shells!" Kuratia shouted anxiously from the side.
Link looked ahead and saw that it was indeed so.
The bullets that hit the tortoise shells at most left craters, but they couldn't penetrate the hard defense at all.
The fish-men also became smarter, knowing that they couldn't withstand the attacks of those strange weapons, so they hid behind the fish turtles and slowly advanced, waiting for an opportunity to swarm them.
"There are so many of these damn turtles," Link said, frowning.
There were dozens of turtles blocking the way, forming a moving wall that slowly closed in on Link.
They would also occasionally spray water jets to disrupt the heavily armored shield soldiers' defenses, causing the soldiers a great deal of trouble.
"Get the bombing squad ready and use all the remaining explosives!" Link ordered directly.
"Report, Lord! The bombing squad is ready!" A dozen soldiers stood in front of Link, each holding a bundle of explosives.
Link pointed to the turtles that had approached within nearly a hundred meters and said, "I need you to slowly approach those turtles under the protection of heavily armored shield bearers. Then, when you are twenty or thirty meters away from them, throw the explosive charges under their bodies. Remember, just in case, throw a few extra!"
Based on his modern knowledge, Link judged that the undersides of these turtle-like creatures should be much more fragile than their shells.
The explosion of the explosive charge should kill them, or at least incapacitate them.
"Understood, mission accomplished!" a dozen or so grenadiers replied, saluting. Their eyes gleamed with unwavering determination, as if they could already see the dawn of victory.
"Third Platoon, First Squad, Second Squad, you take your men and provide cover and protection for the grenade throwing squad, assisting them in completing their mission," Link continued, issuing orders.
The squad leaders of the first and second squads of the third platoon immediately led their soldiers to protect their comrades in the grenade throwing squad behind them with their shields.
They knew that the key to victory or defeat in this battle lay in whether the bombing squad could successfully destroy those fish turtles.
"Remember to avoid the water jets sprayed by those turtles, and don't get the explosives wet," Link shouted a warning.
He knew that these explosive charges were extremely powerful, but if they got damp, they might not be able to detonate properly, and then all their efforts would be in vain.
"Musketeers, continue providing cover fire! Fire hard! Don't hold back your bullets!" Claudia continued to shout.
She heard Link's orders clearly, so she understood that only concentrated firepower could suppress the fishmen's attack and create an opportunity for the bombardment squad to approach the turtles.
......
Under the cover of their teammates, the bombardment squad soldiers steadily approached the giant turtles.
Squad leader Ochib saw through the gaps in the heavy armored shields that he was less than fifty meters away from that damned turtle in front of him.
He secretly calculated the distance and time, preparing to throw the explosive charge at the optimal moment.
"Alright, that's enough. If you get too close, the explosion of the explosives will hit you."
Ochib gave the order, then took out a small wooden clip containing a tinderbox from his person. He and another grenadier next to him lit their explosive packs and rushed out together.
Their figures appeared exceptionally brave and resolute in the firelight.
"Quick! We'll get to within twenty meters of them and throw the explosives in!" Ochib shouted as he ran. His voice was full of determination and courage.
"Yes, squad leader!" the soldier replied.
He followed closely behind the squad leader, ready to carry out this arduous task.
Ochib felt as if the air around him had stopped, and he ran wildly.
He could now clearly see that damned, stinky turtle, and even the hideous faces of the fishmen hiding behind it.
He knew he had to succeed, or everyone would be in great danger.
"Throw!" Ochib commanded, stopping in his tracks.
He threw his explosive charge in a perfect parabola beneath the turtle. The soldier followed suit, throwing his own explosive charge.
"Retreat! Retreat quickly!" The two had no time to stop and immediately ran back.
They knew the explosives were about to detonate and they had to leave the danger zone as soon as possible.
"boom!"
A loud bang rang out in the street, and the turtle was instantly blown over.
It also kicked up a cloud of dust, and a large, dark crater was blasted into its abdomen, constantly emitting black smoke.
At the same time, blue blood kept gushing out from inside, emitting a pungent smell.
The fish-people hiding behind the turtle were not spared either. They were scattered by the powerful impact, and a few unlucky ones were crushed to death by the turtle's car-like body.
Their corpses lay scattered on the ground, looking particularly tragic and terrifying.
As the dust settled, the fish-men were still in a daze.
With the sounds of explosions and gunfire, the area was once again shrouded in smoke and flames.
"Boom boom boom! Bang bang bang!"
Several more fish and turtles were blown to bits.
Apart from one or two turtles that survived the explosion by accident, the rest of the area was filled with large craters and the crooked, dismembered bodies of turtles.
The corpses emitted a pungent odor and a bloody smell, which made people feel nauseous and terrified.
"Well done! That's it! Musketeers, aim at those exposed murlocs and give them a good blast! Bombardiers, blow the rest of those turtles to smithereens too!" Link shouted excitedly, beaming with joy.
140. Invincible
"What's that sound over there? It scared me to death!" On the inner city wall of Hailin City, a soldier on defense nervously grabbed his comrade beside him, his eyes wide open, looking into the distance with a mixture of curiosity and fear. His voice trembled slightly, making it sound particularly shrill.
"Old Lord, look! Something seems to be happening behind those sea monsters. It looks like someone is fighting them!" another soldier shouted urgently, pointing into the distance.
His tone was full of surprise and bewilderment; this was the first time they had encountered such a situation during their time defending the city.
Kuokas also heard the loud noise coming from afar.
The sound was like a thunderclap, deafening, causing her to frown.
She turned around quickly, her eyes fixed intently on the direction from which the sound came, her heart filled with doubt and vigilance.
"What's going on? The sirens' attacks seem to have weakened?"
The old city lord also noticed something amiss. Leaning on his cane, he walked unsteadily to the city wall and squinted as he gazed into the distance.
"You guys come here and lift me up a bit so I can see what's going on over there!" Kuokas ordered the soldiers beside him.
Her tone was firm and decisive, clearly indicating that she was prepared to deal with any unexpected situation.
"Yes!" Several soldiers responded in unison, quickly gathering together to form a human ladder. They moved nimbly and cooperated seamlessly, soon lifting Kuokas up.
Kuokas slowly stepped onto the soldiers' shoulders to steady himself, then raised his head and gazed into the distance.
Her gaze pierced through the billowing smoke, trying to make out the distant battle situation.
At the end of the road, there were six or seven hundred soldiers arranged in a very strange formation, with the soldiers in the middle holding strange weapons that looked like iron rods.
The shape and power of that weapon were clearly not common in their Hailin City.
In the middle of the formation, several men on horseback were directing the battle.
However, despite having only six or seven hundred people, the fishmen and giant fishmen, who caused them so much trouble and heavy casualties, as well as the fish turtles, were completely unable to get within fifty meters of their defensive formation.
