Chapter 231 The Trial Chamber
As everyone took their seats, the entire courtroom gradually quieted down.
Cornelius Fudge, who was sitting in the middle of the front row of benches, stood up, looked around, and said, "Everyone's here. Let's begin. Are you ready?"
He shouted towards the other end of the bench.
Levin followed his gaze and saw another witch sitting at the end of the bench. She was short and fat, with a broad, loose face that looked like a pale toad.
Even though they had never met, Levin could guess her identity from her distinctive appearance.
Fudge's confidant, Umbridge.
At this time, she did not have the power she would have two years later; she was merely Fudge's assistant, doing some note-taking work during the trial.
The plump woman was staring intently at the parchment in front of her, a quill pen in her hand, ready to take notes.
“The trial on February 12th,” Fudge said in a booming voice, and the witch hurriedly began to take notes, her head bowed.
"The trial of the case from thirteen years ago, in which Sirius Black, the Death Eater, betrayed the Potters and murdered Peter Pettigrew."
"Interrogators: Minister for Magic, Cornelius Oswald Fudge; Deputy Head of the Department of Magical Law Enforcement, Jaina Proudmoore; Former Head of the Department of Magical Law Enforcement, Barty Crouch. Trial Recorder: Dolores Jane Umbridge;"
"Witnesses to the case: Levin Green, Nymphadora Tonks, and Severus Snape."
Levin stepped down from the stage and joined Tonks and the Potions professor.
After they arrived at the witness stand, Fudge ordered Auror to bring Sirius Black and Peter Pettigrew into the deliberation room as well.
Footsteps sounded, the door at the corner of the dungeon opened, and four people walked in—Black, Peter, and two Aurors.
“Hmm…” Fudge glanced at the defendant's dock, which only had one chair, and his face twitched. “Alright… I think we need to get another chair. Umbridge, could you…”
Seeing the Minister of Magic's clumsy attempt, Levin couldn't help but chuckle.
He didn't want the trial to be interrupted like this, so he stretched out his right hand, summoned his magic wand, and then shook it slightly.
"【Copy to Double】!"
The next moment, an identical chair appeared next to the defendant's chair.
He thoughtfully created a railing between the two chairs to prevent the two defendants from fighting.
“Oh, excellent Transfiguration Charm, Mr. Grimm. It’s a pity this isn’t Hogwarts, so I can’t give you extra points.” Dumbledore on the stage gave Levin a satisfied smile.
Fudge nodded and said, "Thank you for your help, Mr. Green, but as a junior wizard, you can't... uh... never mind."
He instinctively wanted to point out that young wizards were forbidden from using magic outside of school.
But then he remembered that Levin had helped the Ministry of Magic complete the task of slaying the dragon, so he ultimately said nothing.
Now the Aurors could put Black and Peter down on the chairs respectively.
The chains snapped open instantly, binding them tightly.
Fudge rummaged through a pile of documents, pulled out a piece of parchment, took a deep breath, and read aloud the sentence handed down against Sirius Black.
Through this verdict, people gradually recalled the various details of the Sirius Black case.
After Fudge finished reading, a voice rang out:
"Sirius Black"
Levin turned his head and saw that Barty Crouch had stood up.
He looked very serious and said earnestly, "I have a very important question I want to know: why did you spend thirteen years in Azkaban without ever thinking of appealing? And now you're telling us that you're innocent and that Peter Pettigrew isn't dead?"
"What is the reason for this?"
He stared intently into Blake's eyes, as if trying to silence him with his imposing presence.
But Blake dismissed him with disdain.
"That's because you didn't give me a chance to appeal. You didn't conduct a proper trial before throwing me into Azkaban, did you?"
Sirius Black glanced at Crouch with disdain. "Whether Peter Pettigrew is dead or not is none of my business, because he's right in front of you. In one night, surely the Aurors of the Ministry of Magic can't confirm his identity?"
Upon hearing Sirius's sarcastic remarks, the Wezengamos, dressed in crimson robes, began to whisper amongst themselves.
They all knew that Sirius was right.
Normally, all cases involving wizards are decided by a jury of Wizengamot, and even the minister cannot influence the verdict.
But there is one exception.
During the First Wizarding War, in order to deal with the ever-increasing number of Death Eaters and Dark Wizards, Barty Crouch, then Director of the Department of Law Enforcement, led a new agency—the Magical Law Commission.
The Magical Law Council is of a lower rank than Wizengamor and consists of a judge, a panel of members, and a jury, with Barty Crouch himself serving as the judge.
The Magical Law Council was primarily responsible for reviewing the Death Eater trials of the time, had the authority to adjudicate criminal cases, and examined the information provided to them by convicted criminals.
The committee was disbanded shortly after the First Wizarding War ended, following Crouch's unsuccessful bid for minister.
In fact, the existence of the Magic Law Committee is an infringement on the power of Wizengamo, which Wizengamo strongly opposes.
Sirius Black was imprisoned while the Magic Law Committee was still in existence.
Wisengamour's reaction made Barty Crouch turn pale and press his lips tightly together.
The platform fell silent only when Fudge spoke again.
"Please provide the results of last night's hearing," Fudge said in a deep voice.
Two Aurors approached, one carrying a Pensieve, the other holding two memory bottles and some parchment.
Levin glanced at Gianna, and then the Deputy Director of the Legal Enforcement Division stood up and said, "Now, I request that one of our witnesses, Levin Green, present some of the evidence to us."
"Application approved," Fudge replied cooperatively.
Levin then left the witness stand and went to the evidence stand, poured the memories from one of the memory bottles into the Pensieve, and then pointed his wand at the Pensieve:
"【Powerful Illusion】!"
The scene that would normally require immersing one's head in the Pensieve to see suddenly appeared in the center of the trial chamber thanks to Levin's masterful illusion magic.
It's like a giant 3D holographic projection movie.
The scenes from Sirius Black and Peter Pettigrew's memories are vividly presented before everyone's eyes.
The Wizengamos were in an uproar.
They had never seen such magic before, and this was truly an eye-opening experience. The scene was so realistic that they could even feel the breeze and smell the scents of the moment.
Their gazes toward Levin were filled with amazement and admiration.
This little wizard has surprised them more than once; perhaps he will be another Dumbledore in the future.
As for Dumbledore himself, his gaze towards Levin was filled with complex emotions.
He seems to have consistently underestimated the boy's talent and ability.
In short, Levin acted out their memories in the courtroom, just like he was acting in a movie.
The Wissengamo were thoroughly entertained.
This also greatly reduced the time they spent examining the evidence.
Otherwise, if we were to examine the Pensieve one by one, it would take forever.
After the memory ended, Levin noticed that there were many female members of the Wizengamots, and some of them even had tears in their eyes when they looked at Sirius Black.
“I object,” Crouch stood up and said, “Memory is too subjective, too easily altered, and simply insufficient as evidence.”
“You’re right, Crouch,” Jaina said, standing up as well, “but this doesn’t seem like a point you should be making. Wasn’t the infamous ‘Pendulum Trial’ initiated by you?”
As the first person to carry out the plan to defeat Crouch, she finally stepped forward and began to confront him directly.
"Sirius was convicted by your 'Ponzi scheme' in the first place, so why can't you use the 'Ponzi scheme' to exonerate him now?"
Jaina's words were so sharp that Barty Crouch was speechless for a long time.
Fudge asked, "So what's your opinion, Ms. Proudmore?"
"My opinion is that, since this trial is a retrial of the original Sirius Black case, it should be allowed to use some of the rules from the previous trial. Only in this way can the principle of fairness be upheld."
Jaina spoke eloquently.
The Wisengam people discussed it extensively, all agreeing that this explanation was quite reasonable.
Crouch couldn't prevent the evidence from taking effect, and could only slump back into his seat.
Gianna then began questioning the defendant:
"Peter Pettigrew, why did you fake your death and escape?"
“I deceived everyone, but I had my reasons.” Despite the fear in Peter’s voice, he continued to argue.
He repeated his original line of reasoning, saying how afraid he was of Sirius and so on.
Upon hearing these shameless remarks again, Sirius straightened his body in anger.
But he was pulled tightly back into the chair by the chains.
"It's unbelievable that a wizard could turn into a rat and live in someone else's house for thirteen years just to escape a prisoner in Azkaban."
A high-pitched, shrill voice, like that of a little girl, rang out and pointed out Peter's problem before Sirius could launch into a tirade.
It was the recorder, Umbridge.
Just now, Levin saw Fudge's signal in her eyes, and she immediately stepped forward without the slightest hesitation.
“Umbridge, the court has not yet allowed you to speak.”
Crouch stood up and said coldly.
Umbridge obediently sat down, but the look in her eyes as she glanced at Fudge revealed a hint of smugness.
Fudge nodded almost imperceptibly.
What a born politician!
Levin sighed inwardly.
While Umbridge is indeed very unlikeable, she is certainly adept at opportunism and playing favorites against those she deems inferior.
No wonder he was able to climb to a high position in such a short time.
