Chapter 5 Investigation
Just as the Anti-Entropy ambush troops lurking near the Babylon Laboratory were being harassed by the small group of Honkai beasts summoned by Fuyou and were in a state of panic, the team of investigators sent by Tianming had already been investigating for a long time.
"Has there been any progress in the investigation?" Theresa asked Patrick. They had been in the Tower of Babel for some time, and everyone was investigating, but no information had been reported.
"Unfortunately, no. All surveillance cameras are operating normally, but no clues about the criminal have been found."
Patrick smiled bitterly and shook his head. What happened in the Tower of Babylon was indeed too unbelievable.
"From the surveillance footage, it seems those researchers disappeared out of thin air. There was no one around."
"However, there are some strange white spots on the screen that look like human figures."
While reviewing the video footage, Patrick keenly noticed something unusual. Tianming's surveillance technology would not malfunction inexplicably.
"...No, there really are ghosts, right?" Hearing this, Theresa was a little scared and spoke weakly.
"Don't worry, Lady Theresa."
Looking at Theresa who was trembling in front of him, Patrick comforted her.
"The mysterious events in the world are all related to Honkai energy, and this time is no exception."
As he spoke, Patrick pulled up a data chart, which attracted Theresa's attention.
"What is this...?" Theresa looked at Patrick in confusion. She didn't quite understand what the data on the chart meant.
"This is the historical energy changes of the Houkai energy reactor in the Babylon Laboratory. Just yesterday at midnight, the reactor's output suddenly disappeared for a period of time."
Pointing to the obvious fault line on the map, Patrick explained that, judging by this, the tragedy at Babylon Labs was more likely man-made. But who could quietly eliminate over three hundred researchers overnight? Patrick pondered, but when her thoughts proved fruitless, she offered a suggestion to Theresa.
"Ordinary people can't get close to the Honkai reactor. Let's go investigate, Theresa."
"...Just the two of us?" Theresa was sweating profusely. She looked at the dark passage below and couldn't help but think of ghosts or something like that.
"Yes, just the two of us."
Patrick was incredibly determined. She had to find something, or else the investigation wouldn't work. Seeing this, Theresa couldn't afford to back down, so she followed him.
"Fa, have you found anything? I always feel that something will suddenly run out..." Theresa, an S-class Valkyrie who has defeated an emperor-class Honkai beast head-on, was looking around at this moment, with cold sweat running down her forehead.
"There are only some slight traces of Honkai energy here..." Patrick frowned. She decided to return to the upper level and scan the area carefully after getting the instrument.
"Help... Help..." A weak voice sounded faintly, scaring Theresa so much that she shuddered.
"Ah! The ghost is coming out!" Theresa screamed and grabbed Patrick tightly, terrified.
"No, that's the voice of a human girl!" Patrick sensed something was wrong and hurriedly ran with Theresa towards the source of the sound. "This is... a prison? How could there be such a place in the research institute?" Patrick and Theresa followed the direction of the sound, only to discover countless cages embedded in the wall of the Tower of Babylon. As they surveyed the area, a pale hand reached out from between the cages and grasped Theresa tightly, as if grasping at a lifeline.
"Ghost..." Theresa suddenly forgot to breathe and stared blankly at the bloodless hand.
"Help..." The "ghost" spoke, his voice extremely weak.
"Save...save us..." Before she could finish her words, the hand clutching Theresa's body drooped limply to the side. Only then did Theresa see clearly that the so-called "ghost" was merely a young girl, tears in her eyes, desperately wanting to survive. After she finished speaking, the girl fainted. Imprisoned in the cage were a group of equally ragged, emaciated human girls. ... "Come on, come out, you're safe."
Under Patrick's astonished gaze, Theresa used brute force to pry open all the iron doors one by one, releasing the imprisoned girls inside.
"It's because I don't have the key, not because I like violence."
Theresa smiled at Patrick, trying to get away with it, and seemed to have thought of something, so she asked curiously.
"Oh, right? These girls are covered in bandages and wounds. Why isn't there any information about them?" "The information shows that they are experimental subjects of the Babylonian laboratory. These scars are probably from experiments on the human body's adaptability to Honkai energy."
Patrick explained that she was very clear about the seemingly glamorous destiny and the countless anti-human things it did in secret, and all the filth in the Tower of Babel was just the tip of the iceberg.
"Lady Theresa, you don't need to know this... Thousands of these experimental subjects are recruited into the Fate of Heaven every year. No one cares whether they live or die."
Theresa was silent. She knew that the instigator of all these tragedies was the Bishop of Heaven, her grandfather, Otto Apokalis.
"No, Patrick, at least I care about them."
Theresa spoke slowly. She looked gently at the girls who were so frightened that they dared not look at her, and made up her mind.
"I'll send them away in a few days."
"But they have all been injected with Honkai energy. We can't let these dangerous test subjects go, Lady Theresa. This is against the rules!" Patrick dissuaded. She knew Theresa was kind, but this was the rule of destiny and everyone must abide by it.
"Do you know Saint Freya?" Theresa looked back and smiled. She was determined to take these poor girls away, even if it would violate the rules of destiny.
"Not long ago, I applied to the Bishop for an artificial island in the Far East, where I can quietly shelter these girls."
"I will teach them. Sooner or later, they can return to normal life and even become Valkyries as good as you and me."
Theresa appealed to Patrick's emotions and reason, and continued to persuade him.
"Okay, okay... I'll just pretend I didn't see any of this."
Unable to resist Theresa's constant nagging, Patrick finally gave in.
"Please trust me and come with me!" Seeing that Patrick no longer tried to stop her, Theresa turned to the girls, smiling and extending her hand. Hiding in the crowd, Celine recalled the warm and welcoming staff of SkyMing, who were almost identical to Theresa. Thinking of the tragic deaths of her dearest friends and her own suffering, hatred surged in Celine's heart.
"Hypocrisy..." Convinced that Theresa was no different from those hypocritical SkyMing staff, Xilin's dislike for her grew even stronger. A gloomy expression settled over her, and she glared at Theresa fiercely. But the situation forced her to leave with the others. She'd exhausted herself the previous night, and her strength hadn't fully recovered yet. It wasn't wise to turn on SkyMing now.
"Did someone talk just now?" Theresa was a little confused. She seemed to hear someone talking.
Chapter 6 Countermeasures
As the night deepened, Theresa had deliberately arranged for the children to stay atop the Tower of Babel, away from the den of iniquity that had imprisoned them. At midnight, the base of the Tower, long deserted, welcomed an unexpected guest.
"Click... click..." The sound of footsteps came from far away and then stopped in front of the Honkai energy reactor.
"Huh..." Seeing no one around, the visitor breathed a sigh of relief. This uninvited guest was none other than Sirin. Taking advantage of Theresa and the others' unpreparedness, she had slipped away from the group. Sirin intended to use the powerful Honkai Energy from the Honkai Reactor under cover of darkness to restore her strength.
"I nearly exhausted my strength yesterday, but as long as I draw more Honkai energy from this furnace, I'll recover... no, I'll become even stronger!" Xilin muttered to herself, then placed her hand on the Honkai energy reactor, ready to absorb the vast amount of Honkai energy. She needed power, power that could overturn the world, and she couldn't stop there.
"That's enough, Miss Prisoner."
Suddenly, Patrick's voice rang out from behind Xilin. Xilin turned around hastily and saw Patrick pointing his weapon at her, looking confident of victory.
"Why, why is it you? How did you find me?" Xilin was stunned. She felt that she had hidden herself very well, even taking the surveillance into consideration. She also used the Honkai energy to interfere with the surveillance's observation of herself.
"Just a simple guess."
Patrick said this calmly, but he didn't relax the weapon in his hand at all.
"The Honkai energy reaction when the experimenters disappeared, the Honkai energy residue beside the Honkai energy reaction furnace, and the Honkai energy traces in the cell..." Patrick looked at Xilin proudly without hiding anything.
"Girl, you're still too immature!" So that's how it is... The Valkyrie of Destiny is indeed not someone to be trifled with. Silin thought to herself that she had underestimated the Valkyrie's abilities. Looking at Patrick, Silin noticed that she seemed to have come alone. Theresa, the most powerful girl who had accompanied Patrick during the day, was not present.
"Are you here alone?" Xilin asked tentatively, but she quietly put her hands behind her back.
"Of course, it would be bad if others found out. Come with me, Ms. Herrscher."
Patrick smiled and looked at Xilin jokingly. She noticed Xilin's little movements, but did not care. Patrick was extremely confident in his own strength.
"Don't stay in Tianming anymore. Come with me and I will keep you safe."
No one would have thought that Tianming's A-rank Valkyrie, a member of the Snow Wolf Squad, and known as a "genius", would be a high-level spy who infiltrated Tianming against entropy.
"Haha, stupid!" Xilin laughed disdainfully, and her eyes suddenly turned cold.
"That's good! I finally have a chance to exact revenge on you Valkyries..." "Revenge?" Patrick froze, confused as to what Silin meant. However, in that moment of distraction, the feeling of death enveloped his mind. Patrick's hair stood on end, and his years of battle training made him instinctively duck to the left. The next moment, excruciating pain shot through his right arm. Patrick watched in horror as his forearm twisted and torn—where, just a second ago, his heart had been.
"Space... is warped?" Patrick, enduring the excruciating pain, watched Xilin's movements in disbelief. The situation suddenly reversed, Patrick's weapon was knocked away, and he himself was seriously injured. Xilin, on the other hand, regarded Patrick with interest.
"Good, I dodged it... What's next?!" With a sneer, Xilin became even more frantic and raised her hand again. Oops! Patrick thought to himself, the image of Xilin's wild laughter reflected in his pupils. ...
At dawn, the sky was just beginning to turn pale. The snowy plains outside the Tower of Babylon were littered with the remains of Honkai beasts. The fearless Honkai beasts surged forward like a tide, each wave more powerful than the last. Just as Walter was about to retreat to the rear and establish a line of defense, the Honkai beasts vanished silently, as if they had never appeared.
"Chicken Coop Head, let's go back... I really can't stand it anymore..." The people of Anti-Entropy waited for the intelligence of the so-called "senior spy" for a whole day, but no news came. Tesla looked at Einstein resentfully and began to back down.
"Someone's coming!" Without waiting for Einstein's response, the highly perceptive Walter suddenly spoke. In the distant woods, a figure could be vaguely seen limping toward the Anti-Entropy Force. Seeing this, Walter hurriedly led Tesla and Einstein to the woods. As they approached, Walter saw Patrick, looking utterly miserable. She was covered in blood, her entire right arm missing. She looked like she had survived a near-death experience to escape the Tower of Babel.
"Master, I'm sorry, the mission failed... The Herrscher has awakened and is growing stronger."
Leaning against the tree, Patrick spoke weakly.
"Is it still too late? Don't worry, leave it to me from now on. Just give me the clues about her."
Walter comforted him, and then asked Patrick for a way to find the second Herrscher.
"Alliance leader, you said you would protect my friends who are still in the Heavenly Destiny."
However, Patrick did not submit the information immediately, but instead made a request to Walter.
"Well, I will."
Fortunately, Walter was not a man who did not keep his word, nor was he disgusted by Patrick's behavior. He nodded and agreed to Patrick's conditions.
"Hahahahahaha!" In the corner of the room, Xilin, who had just defeated Patrick, was extremely excited.
"I won, even the Valkyrie is no match for me!" From the moment they entered the laboratory, the researchers instilled a concept into the girls: all their sacrifices were for the purpose of studying the stigmata, so that the Valkyrie could fight better.
"Stigma? Valkyrie? What's so great about that! My power is even stronger than these!" Xilin said to herself excitedly. She successfully proved that she was no worse than those Valkyries.
"I'm not a victim!" After venting her frustrations, Silin, slowly calming down, reflected on her situation. Patrick had disappeared near the reactor, and Destiny would surely have sent guards to guard it, leaving her no way to secretly absorb Houkai energy. Furthermore, the previous battle had consumed a great deal of her energy, and Silin wasn't entirely confident she could defeat the white-haired girl who had come with Patrick. Just as Silin was agonizing, a mosquito-like Houkai beast, emitting a faint pink glow, landed in her hand.
"I've never seen a creature before, yet it feels so familiar..." Feeling the kindness of the creature in her hand, Xilin was inexplicably reminded of the same familiar creature she encountered that night when she slaughtered the researchers. The miniature Honkai beast flapped its wings at a breakneck speed, as if trying to communicate something to Xilin. Xilin was surprised to find that she could understand its meaning without any instruction.
"You mean, you want to help me lure those people away so that I have time to absorb the energy here?" Xilin was slightly surprised when she sensed the intention of this mini Honkai beast.
"Then, you're going to take me to find someone of my kind who can help me and recruit him as your subordinate?"
Chapter 7 The Queen and the Ancient Beast
"Oh no! Lady Theresa!" The next morning, when Theresa was sitting in the main control room of the Babylon Laboratory, still worrying about the investigation, the accompanying observer ran over in a panic.
"A large number of Honkai beasts have suddenly appeared from the surrounding snow. A conservative estimate is several thousand!" "And they're heading towards the Babylon Tower. They might arrive soon. Please issue the combat orders immediately!" "What?!" Theresa was shocked and stood up suddenly. Thousands of Honkai beasts... Was some major Honkai event happening nearby? "Quick, take the children to the main control room for protection, and then activate the Babylon Laboratory's defense system!" Theresa didn't dare to delay and immediately ordered. The girls rescued yesterday were no match for the terrifying and brutal Honkai beasts. She needed to immediately transfer the children to the safest place in the Babylon Tower.
"Lady Theresa, the Tower of Babylon's defense system is damaged..." The SkyMing technicians were stunned. It was clearly working perfectly when they checked it last night, so how could it be paralyzed this morning? "Then report this to headquarters immediately!" Seeing this, Theresa turned to the liaison officer.
"Lady Theresa, we can't send out a distress signal."
The liaison officer put down the computer, feeling helpless. The surroundings of the Tower of Babel were too strange, as if something was interfering with it.
"...By the way, where's Patrick? Hurry and ask her to come over to discuss combat matters!" Seeing that the familiar figure did not appear, Theresa instructed the person next to her.
"Lady Theresa, we can't contact Lord Patrick. The signal here seems to have been cut off."
The liaison officer felt a cold sweat trickle down his forehead. Everything was completely out of character, and the current situation wasn't a good sign. The atmosphere froze, and everyone could faintly hear the incessant roars of the Honkai beasts outside the tower.
"Protect the children! I'll hold them off!" Theresa made a quick decision, shouldering the immensely heavy golden cross, and hurried toward the entrance of the Tower of Babylon. Brilliant sunlight streamed through the gate, and Theresa saw countless Honkai beasts advancing toward the Tower.
"Hoo..." Theresa closed her eyes and exhaled slightly. Suddenly, she opened them with a determined look and pulled out the golden cross she was carrying.
