Amber gold.
"So, you learned your martial arts skills at the Court of Owls?" Dick's heart tightened.
“No one taught me, my friend. After you left, I was faked to have drowned in a car accident, and then the court threw me into the forest for training. It was freezing cold there, and you couldn’t see anything after dark except for flocks of crows. They mistook me for a corpse and pecked off the skin around my eyes. The horrible state you see now is thanks to them.”
"Or rather, thanks to you."
Dick instinctively avoided his gaze, only to find that no matter which way he turned his face, Raymond's scarred eyes followed him closely.
Raymond's lips curled into a smile that looked more like a grimace. "I survived everything in hell, but even so, I'm worthless to the court. They just want me to bring you back safe and sound. You're the main character, Dick. I've always been just a substitute for you."
"But this time..."
He swung his claws again, this time with an even more ferocious attack.
"I'll kill you! I don't care about the court!"
Swish!
Just as the claws were about to strike Dick, a sharp whistling sound pierced the night sky.
A batarang pierced Raymond's body with pinpoint accuracy and exploded in that instant. The sudden impact caused Raymond to lose his balance, and the steel blade deviated from its original trajectory, so that it only tore the fabric on Dick's left shoulder and a few stray hairs.
"Who!" Raymond looked around furiously.
On the top of a sycamore tree on the other side of the cemetery parking lot, a figure stands at the boundary between moonlight and shadow.
The person was dressed in a full Batgirl battle suit, and her flowing red hair trembled slightly in the moonlight, which edged it with a cold silver.
The next second she was right in front of Dick.
"Dick, wake up!" The newcomer's voice was crisp and clear, and he caught Dick as he stumbled and fell. "You can't just collapse here like this."
“Barbara! What are you doing here…” Dick’s eyes were somewhat unfocused, whether it was due to the effects of the drugs or because the woman in front of him shouldn’t be standing in front of him.
Shouldn't she be in a wheelchair?
The bat girl did not answer.
She released Dick's hand, letting him regain his balance on his own, then stepped over the pile of crushed pebbles on the ground and walked towards Raymond.
Raymond launched the first attack, but the bat-girl was faster than him. She dodged the first slash by sidestepping, and with her left hand she drew a retractable baton from her belt, striking Raymond's right wrist with a backhand.
boom!
The three steel blades of the claw sprang out, detached from the mechanical control, and hung limply at the outside. Taking advantage of the opportunity, the bat-girl flipped forward and delivered a fatal blow, sending Raymond flying backward.
His back finally shattered a dead branch at the bottom of a sycamore tree, and he fell heavily onto the gravel ground.
The Bat Girl didn't give him a chance to stand up again.
She pulled a dart from her waist and shot it from above at Raymond's thigh.
Stab it!
This dart is electrified.
The pulsed current drilled into his muscles, causing him to let out a painful growl.
"Do you still want to continue, you lackey of the court?" The Batgirl looked at Raymond, who was unable to move, and her voice turned cold.
Dick managed to walk to the spot where Raymond had just fallen, his hands still trembling.
Raya also ran out of the RV. She tripped on the gravel ground, but still stumbled and rushed to Raymond's side.
She knelt on the ground, holding Raymond's head in her arms, tears streaming down her cheeks and dripping onto the old scar on his forehead, but they did nothing to lessen his pain in the slightest.
The bat girl took two steps back, leaving the battlefield to these former friends.
“Wang Baixi called me here. He told Batman that you might be facing some kind of crisis,” Batgirl said to the dazed Dick. “The GCPD is also on their way. But after what they’ve done, I think the circus is going to go through another upheaval.”
Dick didn't speak, he just stared at Raya, who was kneeling on the ground.
After a long while, he finally turned to look at the bat girl.
"Xiao Ba, how come you... can stand up all of a sudden?"
The bat girl also looked down at Raymond lying on the ground.
"Like him, because of amber gold."
"Batman gave it to you?"
“No, Wang Baixi gave it to me.” She spread her hands.
Dick chuckled weakly, “He’s right. You’re the real ‘bird of prey’ compared to the owl.”
He looked up at the full moon, his heart filled with mixed emotions. Another Gotham night was about to end.
Chapter Eighty-Seven is utter nonsense.
The following night, a week had passed since the decisive battle at Cavaliers Stadium.
Wayne Manor is brightly lit right now.
Bruce Wayne stood on the circular steps in the center of the manor's banquet hall, holding a glass of champagne.
Wang Baixi stood about three steps below the steps, with Joshua Wayne standing to his left, a smile on his face that showed he had no excessive expectations of anything in the world.
The scene was filled with Gotham City's celebrities, except, of course, the group of guys who died last night.
Tim and Cassandra stood further back, attending the dinner as students sponsored by Wayne Enterprises. Of course, Cassandra was not yet formally enrolled in any human school.
She didn't wear a suit dress today, but instead changed into a simple dark green dress, which made her look less fierce and more reserved than usual.
“Everyone,” Bruce said, raising his arm. “Thank you for coming here tonight. I know some of you have known me your whole lives, and some of you have probably only known me for a week, but anyway, since you’ve come into Wayne Manor, I consider you my friends.”
A soft laugh rippled through the banquet hall, while Wang Baixi silently thought to himself that this certainly didn't include the Claws who had broken into Wayne Manor last time.
"I am very happy to be here with my friends to announce some good news."
His gaze swept across the entire room, including Joshua, who was pursing his lips.
"Next month, Wayne Enterprises will begin direct and substantial investments in Gotham's future. We have already partnered with several of the country's top design and engineering firms to launch an initial plan to completely rebuild Gotham's underground utility system, dramatically expanding and modernizing the city. And this is just our first step."
After saying that, he stretched his free hand down the steps and gestured for Wang Baixi to "come up".
"And this Mr. Wang, as the new special advisor to Wayne Group and a partner I personally trust very much, will be fully responsible for this plan."
A wave of applause erupted from all around, and everyone's eyes turned to Wang Baixi.
"This flatteres me, everyone." Wang Baixi nodded without changing his expression.
Bruce withdrew his hand and raised his voice again.
“I can’t tell you how excited and hopeful I am about these plans. More details will be gradually revealed to the public in the coming days. Thank you, friends, thank you. But I need more than just your applause; I need your action. Let’s invest together, invest in the future of Gotham.”
He looked around and said in a stronger voice, "If we can all do that, a better, brighter Gotham is just one step away."
clap clap clap!
Thunderous applause resounded throughout the banquet hall, and a real estate developer standing in the front row even led the way by whistling.
Although I don't know exactly what's on fire, the atmosphere seems really lively!
As the applause faded, Alfred had somehow appeared beside Bruce, taking the glass of champagne from his hand that had completely lost its bubbles.
“Well done, Mr. Bruce. Exhilarating from start to finish,” Alfred whispered.
“Thank you, Alfred,” Bruce said softly.
"Although you didn't mention at all that you would be building a large number of bat caves throughout the city."
"Ha, I definitely won't forget next time."
When the free discussion session finally began, someone immediately came up to him: "Mr. Bruce, there are rumors that you have some unknown connection with the Court of Owls. What do you think about this?"
“That’s utter nonsense. In fact, the Court of Owls has never existed,” Bruce replied sincerely. “If such an organization existed, why have I never received an invitation to join?”
Wang Baixi chimed in at the opportune moment, "That's even more ridiculous than saying I'm Batman."
A burst of good-natured laughter erupted from the crowd, and the person who had asked the question tactfully stepped back. Taking advantage of the moment when no one was looking, Wang Baixi reached out and swapped a glass of champagne for a fresh one from a passing waiter's tray.
But before he could finish his drink, Bruce gestured for him to follow.
He led her to a woman with neat blond hair and sharp brown eyes. Judging from her attire and demeanor, she was definitely not some socialite.
"Bruce, I knew you'd be here."
“Yes, Vicky, I’m here.” Bruce nodded slightly to her, then turned to the side. “At King Bai Xi’s. Your Majesty, this is Vicky Vicky.”
Vicky Wells, a prominent reporter for the Gotham Times.
Of course, she also has another identity: Bruce Wayne's ex-girlfriend.
"Hello, Miss Vicky, I've heard so much about you." Wang Baixi extended his hand.
Vicky grasped his hand. "Likewise, Mr. Wang."
Bruce asked, "Have you been busy with some big news lately, Vicky?"
“There’s news everywhere, like about you suddenly ‘coming back to life.’” Vicki shrugged. “You’d never guess how many women took the title of Bruce’s lover and claimed to be pregnant with your child while you were gone.”
“Ha,” Bruce coughed awkwardly, “these guys are always trying to make a big splash.”
“Isn’t this the era we live in? Indifference to the truth, and a fervent pursuit of rumors.” Vicky looked him straight in the eye. “However, there are indeed some people doing their best to make this era a better place. You funded the newspaper’s digital transformation, and now you’re personally leading the planning for Gotham’s rebuild. I’ve always said you’re Gotham’s rising star, and now it seems that’s absolutely true.”
"Don't flatter me, Vicky," Bruce chuckled.
At that moment, a man standing behind Vicky immediately stepped into the crowd.
"Mr. Bruce, after meeting you today, I can confirm that your reputation is well-deserved."
Bruce looked at the man, his eyes narrowing slightly. "Oh, I recognize you. You are... March?"
Wang Baixi raised his eyes and followed Bruce's gaze.
The man was about thirty years old, wearing a fitted dark gray suit, tall, and with regular features.
Lincoln March?
He felt like he'd heard that name somewhere before.
