Wang Baixi didn't recognize her, but Tim spoke up behind him: "She is Victoria Armstrong. Her husband is one of Gotham's most famous Supreme Court justices, and she is the chair of the Gotham Heritage Foundation. She even attended a charity gala with Bruce six months ago."
The third body, the fourth body, the fifth body... were all removed as well.
With each mask removed, a name of great renown in Gotham is added to the secret room. Among these people are real estate tycoons, university presidents, retired federal senators, and two individuals whose identities even Batman couldn't immediately recognize, but who are clearly of considerable importance.
“These seven men are all powerful figures in Gotham.” Wang Baixi flipped the last mask over and placed it face down on the table, dusting off his hands. “Who would kill them before we do?”
Kelvin Ross was powerless to help.
“I never participate in the internal affairs of parliament, and I don’t know who did it.”
“You’re quite honest,” Wang Baixi said coldly.
“Whoever benefits the most is the most likely candidate,” Batman said.
This statement is undoubtedly correct.
“The Powers,” Wang Baixi blurted out, but immediately dismissed the idea. “No, the Powers have already been kidnapped by me. They’re probably cursing in some Penguin Gang basement right now. If they had planned this all along, they wouldn’t have bothered dealing with us in the hotel. They could have just run away. And cutting off their own wings like this isn’t like them.”
But then, who is the most suspicious person?
Tim crouched under the conference table and scanned the floor, table legs, and chair backs with a UV spotlight.
“No footprints, no fingerprints, no clothing residue. Hmm, to clean up the scene so thoroughly in such a short time, that’s quite an achievement.” He turned off the spotlight and stood up, his tone filled with frustration.
Wang Baixi also came to each of them and activated [Legacy Echo].
[Experience points +70!]
[Absolutely! You must catch Batman!]
Armstrong, I advise you not to be so delusional. Batman isn't so easily captured. Besides, even if you did capture him, haven't you learned your lesson from last time? How are we going to take over Wayne Enterprises?
[Calm down, you two. This time we have a foolproof plan. 'That person' is ready to make his move. No matter how many times Bruce comes back to life, it won't affect our plans.]
[Barbatos above, this time we must succeed!]
Where are the leaders?
[God knows where they're having a good time... Uh, wait, this is making me a little dizzy!]
He listened patiently to the last words of the people before they died, but he still couldn't figure it out. Who was "that person"? And how did they become poisoned so quickly?
It can't be some kind of "And Then There Were None" story where someone fakes their death to escape!
"Wang, what have you discovered?" Batman asked.
“Based on their memories before they died, it seems that no one came and went from here, let alone found the murderer. This poisoned wine must have been prepared in advance,” Wang Baixi pondered. “No matter who did it, these people hold a significant position in Gotham’s political and business circles. If they just disappeared like this, Gotham City would definitely be in chaos, not to mention that it is currently in the process of reconstruction.”
“The remnants of the court will also be thrown into chaos,” Kelvin added. “And the court has a lot of influence around the world. If they find that the Gotham branch has been uprooted, who knows what they might do.”
Unfortunately, he was just a claw and couldn't help them lock down the rest of the courtroom members.
Zatana hesitated, "We can't just resurrect all of them for the sake of stability, can we?"
“Absolutely not.” Wang Baixi answered decisively. “What good would it do to bring them back to life? These people wouldn’t thank me for saving their lives. But we have to admit one thing: the courts do need to exist, at least for Gotham right now.”
"Wang, what are your thoughts?" Batman looked at him.
Wang Baixi strolled slowly around the conference table, stepped on the judge's instep, and plopped down in the head seat.
He propped his legs up on the conference table and let Hedwig rest on his shoulders, while his hands were crossed and placed on his stomach.
He slowly began to speak: "The courts do need to exist, but they will exist even without them."
“I see, you’re going to take over the criminal underworld again.” Tim shrugged.
“That’s exactly what I was thinking,” Wang Baixi said dismissively, taking a mask and putting it on. “Now, we need to find a way to notify Nightwing that he might be in danger.”
After saying that, he glanced at his owl.
"Go, Hedwig."
"By the way, go check on the Bowers again. I suspect... they were also murdered."
……
Meanwhile, in his campervan outside Sacred Heart Cemetery in Gotham's East Side, Dick Grayson was on a date that was becoming less and less like a date.
His head was spinning as if he'd been given half a bottle of cheap whiskey, and his limbs were so weak he could barely lift them.
Dick knew very well how his body reacted when he was exhausted, so he was definitely not tired; he must have been drugged.
Is it Laya?
Lajavestri's face, which had just been filled with a gentle smile, was now gradually turning cold.
"Raya, why?" Dick asked, puzzled.
Koraya did not answer.
Dick struggled to his feet, his steps unsteady, but he regained his balance in the next second. He reached out and grabbed her wrist, with a force far exceeding Raya's expectations.
She hadn't expected Dick to have the willpower to stand up.
"What happened?" He looked into her eyes, which were gradually losing their light. "Is it related to the circus? Did Brian tell you to do it?"
“I’m sorry, Dick,” her voice turned cold, “but this has nothing to do with Brian.”
Just then, the RV door was suddenly pulled open from the outside, and a strong night wind blew in.
There was a person standing at the door.
The man was wearing a black and green patchwork tight-fitting combat suit. His muscle lines were clearly visible in the dim light of the RV's ceiling light, as if they had been carved out piece by piece with a sculptor's knife.
Brownish-brown straps crisscrossed and wrapped around his torso and limbs, from his shoulder blades to his forearms, and from his thighs down to below his knees.
Two bright yellow fluorescent pupils were fixed on Dick Grayson's face.
Is that outfit for claws?
"Raya, you've failed." The man's voice was incredibly deep. "Let me try."
"you are?"
“Richard Grayson. Oh no,…” the man paused, then spoke in a tone as if addressing a long-lost friend, “Dick, have you forgotten me? I’m Raymond, Raymond McCreary.”
Dick held his breath, watching the other person slowly approach.
The other person walked to within a few steps of Dick, but suddenly stopped and began to examine his arms.
Dick noticed that each of his arms was strapped with a mechanical device, and in an instant, each device ejected three steel blades as long as a human forearm.
The wind blew the curtains, and moonlight shone through the glass onto the cold-looking claws, reflecting Dick's face, which was first blank, then surprised.
Chapter 86
Then, Raymond raised his hand and slowly removed his hood.
Underneath the hood was a face that felt both strange and familiar to Dick.
His cheekbones are more prominent than when he was a child, and his chin has become more square, but the old scar that runs across his nose is still there. It was left when he was a child and was accidentally cut by a steel cable while rehearsing trapeze together.
But what truly shocked Dick was the area around his eyes.
His eye sockets were covered with a dense network of tiny scars, which radiated outwards from his eyelids. The skin in that area had almost completely lost its original texture, with newly formed pink granulation tissue and necrotic white patches intertwined.
"Raymond, your eyes..."
"You saw it? This is the gift the court gave me."
"court!?"
Before Dick could finish his questioning, Raymond's steel blade on his right arm slashed directly at his face.
Dick quickly ducked to avoid the attack, but the three claws whistled past his head and sliced the back of the RV sofa behind him into four pieces.
Ignoring his dizziness, he immediately rolled over to the other side of the RV, grabbed the half-finished can of Coke from the folding table, and splashed it on Raymond's face.
But Raymond simply turned his head slightly to avoid the blob of brown liquid.
Then, the claws on his left arm slashed down at his waist.
Dick used the opportunity of dodging to the side to smash open the RV's door, which was not closed properly, and rolled onto the gravel ground of the parking lot.
Raymond followed closely behind and jumped out of the RV, but Raya remained standing in the same spot. She didn't have the courage to jump out of the RV like Raymond and end it all.
She could only close her eyes and listen to the sounds of fighting outside.
In the parking lot, Dick staggered back a step, dodging Raymond's right-hand claws, then spun sharply in the opposite direction, barely avoiding Raymond's left-hand attack. The gravel slipped under his feet, and Dick's breathing grew increasingly rapid.
"Why?" he shouted at Raymond as he dodged, "Raymond...aren't we friends?!"
“It used to be, Dick, it used to be.” Raymond’s voice was as cold as ice shards. “But not anymore. People like you are born to be protagonists. What right do we little people have to be your friends?”
“From the time you were little, your face was on every poster for the circus, all the applause belonged to your Grayson family, and my name was always fourth in the credits.”
As he spoke, his sharp claws slashed open the tires of a wrecked truck to Dick's left.
The sound of the tire exploding drowned out the rest of his sentence.
"Even if your parents die, you'll still have billionaires to adopt you, won't you? Good luck always seems to be on your side, Dick."
“Nobody wants to lose their parents,” Dick frowned.
"Of course you don't want to, but you can still become Bruce Wayne's adopted son after losing your parents! What about us? The circus is declining, tickets aren't selling, and the cities we tour to are getting smaller and smaller. We can only watch our only livelihood skill rot away and then wait to die."
Raymond crossed his arms again and slashed down, the steel blades leaving six silver-white afterimages in the moonlight.
"Captain Harry treats us like animals that can be traded at any time!"
Dick was a beat too slow in dodging.
"What happened to Captain Harry?"
"What's wrong!? You know, after Wayne took you away, the court needed a boy to replace the Grey Child."
Raymond didn't pursue. He snorted and stared straight at Dick with his scarred eyes.
Dick's mind was a complete mess. He had figured out Raymond's offensive tactics, but he knew very well that he couldn't actually hurt Raymond.
Courtroom, claws...
