Chris pulled the bolt back and moved step by step toward the firelight, so he could at least see the attacker when it appeared. Just then, he heard a gust of wind whistle past him. "So fast!" Chris thought, the movement swift, the killing instantaneous. He was completely on the defensive; he was already the attacker's prey.
The M4 had been taken away, and his pistol was useless against the attackers in the darkness. His flashlight was nowhere to be found... Suddenly, an attacker appeared behind Chris! Chris had his back to the flashlight, and the attacker silently approached him, sticking out its long tongue, but Chris was completely unaware.
Chapter 498 Crisis
Just as the tongue was about to touch Chris's neck, another gust of wind flew by, accompanied by the sound of metal spinning through the air. "Crack!... Ouch!" The attacker screamed in agony! Chris quickly turned around and saw a military knife deeply embedded in the attacker's head. Chris then fired several more shots into the attacker's head, and the attacker fell to the ground dead.
“Chris, are you alright?” Leon appeared in the firelight. “Oh! It’s you. Great, thanks for the help,” Chris said. Leon handed Chris the gun he had lost. “This is your guy. Take it. I know a place where we can shake them off,” Leon said.
Leon drew his military knife, and Chris followed him, running to the other side of the area. Although he possessed other superpowers, he clearly couldn't use them.
"Did you shake them off?" Alice asked Chris. "I think so, they couldn't have gotten in with them blocking the door," Chris said, patting the door beside him. "They'll leave in a bit and give up, but... how come there are spies here? Is all this related to Hydra?" Jill asked.
"I don't know, but it's definitely the work of Hydra's bio-terrorists. They're certainly doing something here, which might be related to Hydra's suspicious activity here earlier," Chris replied. As he spoke, there was no longer any sound from the attackers outside the door; they had probably left.
“Try contacting the others by radio, how are they?” Jill asked. “No need to try, the radio signal is very weak here, and there’s some unknown interference,” Chris replied, tapping on his equally malfunctioning GPS.
“And now, great hero?” Alice looked at Chris, eager for his next instructions.
“Now it’s just the few of us left. The others left in such a hurry that they didn’t set a specific meeting point or time. God bless them so that their split-up goes smoothly. As for us, let’s keep going.” Chris pointed the beam of his lamp into the deep passage. “Also, ladies first.”
Chris and Leon were somewhat disappointed to find no trace of Barry at the site of the battle. The nearby attackers seemed to have vanished instantly, leaving no trace. The torches they had thrown earlier were still burning, demonstrating their remarkable durability.
Lyon quickly searched the vicinity for any valuable clues. The body of the perpetrator had strangely disappeared, which was very odd. The bloodstains present were dark red and emitted a foul stench; they must have all been left by the perpetrator, with no human blood. If Barry was dead, why was there no blood or body? Barry, oh Barry, you always make us worry.
"Fuck!" Chris cursed. He saw something very important: Barry's M29 revolver lying next to the pillar. He immediately picked it up to examine it; all six bullets were still inside, and he was even more puzzled.
This M29 had been with him for over 20 years, even more important than his Labrador Retriever. Why was it left here? Light machine guns have long reload times, and after we left, surrounded, he simply didn't have time to reload. So this M29 was his only weapon, and it wasn't fired even once? Why didn't he leave his light machine gun behind, but instead left his "old comrade-in-arms"? Is it trying to tell us he's still alive? ...
“There’s no way forward. It seems we should have chosen to go right in the first place.” Chris shone his flashlight on the walls of the room. This room was probably still related to Hydra; the Hydra symbol was visible in the passage they had passed through earlier.
“Chris, should we go back the way we came?” Jill asked. Just then, “Click! Click!” the door slammed shut! “My God, what happened?” Chris exclaimed in surprise. The door had descended so quickly that it was closed before anyone could react.
Alice made an innocent face. Meanwhile, water began gushing from the base, clearly indicating a problem with the pipes. A massive torrent of water shot towards the ceiling; no one would be foolish enough to stop this disaster.
“Alice, remember not to touch anything again,” Jill said. At that moment, water jets sprayed from the walls all around the room. The water was already above Mo’s knees; if this continued, everyone would drown.
Chris removed the handheld missile system from his back and said, "Take cover! I'm going to blow up the gate!" Alice and the newly arrived Jill leaned against a nearby pillar. He began kneeling in the water, his already wet clothes now soaked, and after aiming, he pulled the trigger.
The familiar whistling sound of a missile didn't ring out. Chris tried several times, but there was no response. The missile itself should be fine; it was probably water inside the launcher, which was too wet to function. Jill didn't hear a sound either. Seeing Chris's anxious expression, she understood that the missile was unusable.
Alice was filled with remorse and regret, but there was nothing she could do. Soon the water reached Chris's neck, and since Alice and Jill weren't as tall as Chris, they swam and floated on the surface. The three of them swam together, trying their best not to separate; there must be a way to solve the problem.
Two meters, three meters—the water level showed no sign of stopping. Soon, the three men's heads were almost touching the ceiling, and they had to admire the room's airtightness. "The water's about to flood the roof! Wait for me, I'm going down to try something that's a last resort," Chris said, taking a deep breath and diving into the water.
“What’s he going to do?” Jill asked. “I don’t know, he must have thought of the worst possible plan.” Alice shone a light on Chris underwater, and Chris swam to the bottom of the room. He reached the door, landed on his feet, stretched out his hands to grab the bottom of the door, and lifted it up with all his might.
The door was too heavy for him to lift; Chris's strength wasn't limitless, and he considered giving up. Just then, a light flashed in the water, and Alice swam down, nodded to Chris, and then landed on her feet, reaching out and using her telekinesis to lift the door upwards. Jill also swam down.
The futile attempt only fueled Chris's motivation. Rather than just watching, he figured he might as well lend a hand; perhaps he was just a little bit more than he could lift the door. "Click!" The door made a sound in the water, indicating that it was having some effect.
The room was now like a fish tank; all the air had been driven away by the water, which had completely submerged the room. However, after that initial knock on the door, there was no further sound. A considerable amount of time had passed since she was submerged, and Jill's consciousness began to blur; her vision started to fade.
Chapter 499 Crisis Resolved
"Calculate the time it would take to drown, drain the water, and come here..." Chris threw the illuminating fireworks into the water. The fireworks were of high quality; they didn't need oxygen to burn and illuminated the bottom of the water, at least sixteen or seventeen meters deep.
“The water here is so clear, you could even drink it directly,” Chris exclaimed. Alice then checked her equipment, including the AK-47 and two spools of ammunition that were hanging on her body. They were wet, but once dried, they would be fine.
"Cough, cough, cough," Jill suddenly coughed a few times, spitting out the water she had been given, then gasped for breath and opened her eyes.
“This place is really big. I never imagined that the underground part of this place would be so large. It’s already eight o’clock in the morning, and five hours have passed.” Alice raised her luminous watch with her right hand for Chris to see.
"You're leaving, I won't stop you, but I hope it protects you! You idiot!" It turned out Chris had gone to get the amulet. Jill felt a little embarrassed and let go of Chris. "This was given to me by Alice, take it, I won't stop you." Chris reached out and pushed the amulet to Jill.
This was a silver cross necklace, quite heavy, with the silver cross almost the size of an Iron Cross. "Thank you, but perhaps the Lord Jesus will forgive my rudeness. This is a token of the Lord; He can protect you from harm," Jill said.
Chris couldn't possibly give it to him. Just as they were arguing, a dark figure swiftly passed by at the end of the road where they were! Both of them sensed something was wrong. "Who? Is it a survivor?" Chris asked. There was no answer.
Jill lay on the ground, vomiting up the water she had been forced to drink, and gasping for breath. She felt weak in her limbs after being in shock for a while, and Chris helped her sit up against the wall. "Where are we? Are we saved?" Jill asked, looking around. "Maybe yes, maybe no, it might be worse than we thought..." Chris repeated what he had said to Alice.
Jill tugged at the "iron bucket" on Chris's back. "Well, have you tried this before?" Chris nearly fainted from stupidity, forgetting he was carrying a missile. Chris took the small missile launcher off. He turned it upside down to pour out the water, took out the last "key" to blast open the door, wrapped it in his clothes, and dried it off.
The other rockets had been washed away by the water, leaving only this one inside the launcher. The three approached the door; the metal on the door seemed quite formidable, and Alice and Jill instinctively covered their ears…
Claire suddenly stopped. "Barry, did you hear that?" He quickly pressed his ear against the wall. "It was an explosion. It came from down below," Bucky said, mimicking Chris by pressing his ear against the wall as well.
“Could it be that Jill and the others have already reached the bottom?” Claire looked at Yuri. “The handheld launcher is in my brother Chris’s hands…” Claire thought for a moment before answering. “Yes, that’s right, they’re down there. It seems there’s more down there. Why didn’t anyone discover this before?” Claire asked again. “They’re probably all dead down there,” Bucky replied with a touch of humor.
Bucky and Claire lost sight of the shadowy figure after only a few steps; the passageways here were a maze of interconnected paths. "I wasn't mistaken, someone definitely went past just now," Claire said. "Neither was I; the chances of both of us hallucinating are very small."
On the other side, a crisp "crack!" came from beneath Chris's feet as he crushed a brick. "Damn it. What did you do?" Chris muttered. Then, a heavy thud echoed from the depths of the passage behind them! Clang! And then the sound of a massive roller rolling! Only then did Chris notice that the passage they were walking through had a slight downward slope.
They stared at each other for half a second, then took off running! "Good heavens! Can't you watch where you're going?!" Alice shouted. "What?! You told me to look down in the pitch black while we were talking?!" Chris complained. Yuri took the opportunity to turn around and saw the tunnel, thick and wide, rushing towards them.
“We have to find a way to stop him, Chris!” “I wish I could! But it’s not that easy!” The two ran forward as fast as they could. Jill’s flashlight shone on an exit ahead, and the two were overjoyed.
Five seconds later, they immediately squandered their joy. "The exit ahead is empty!" Jill shouted. "So, we're going to fall down?!" Chris looked at Jill.
The exit was right in front of them, and Chris could see it clearly: a vertical sewer trench outside, like inside a chimney, with a diameter of at least eighteen or nineteen meters. Its depth was unknown. There was a faint light inside, but it wasn't sunlight; it was opaque and likely emitted by ancient glowworms.
The group stopped at the exit. Chris peered down with his flashlight, while Alice looked back at the rolling stones. "Damn it! Think of something!" Jill exclaimed anxiously. "There's no way out! We're going to die here! Come on!" Chris shouted at Alice, sounding annoyed.
"It's too late! Jump! I'm sorry!"
A pristine white ceiling, a long, blue-cased chandelier illuminating the room—the Umbrella Corporation team found themselves lying in a bed. Someone beside them was fast asleep. They recalled being in a hospital, in a private room the size of a classroom. They were now alright; they removed their respirators.
At that moment, Wesker gently pushed open the door and entered, walking quietly to Jill. "My man, it's incredible you survived," he said softly, pulling up a chair and sitting down.
“I’ve increased the number of guards around the hospital, and especially in the corridors and at the room doors. They’re all elites from the organization; they can’t get in. The biological weapons can’t take you a second time.” Wesker looked at Jill, expressionless. Wesker was actually pleased; at least she heard him speak, at least she wasn’t ignoring him.
"Impossible! She's not human! How can someone survive multiple gunshot wounds! Every single one was fatal! How could someone so frail survive having her heart pierced?!" "Yeah! It's impossible for a normal person!" "She's a demon!" The doctors were nearly driven mad. "Shut up!!! The company said if you want to tell anyone, you'd better settle your families and yourselves first." An Umbrella branch employee pulled out a pistol and placed it on the table. The doctors fell silent.
Then he pulled out a few paper bags. "This is hush money. If you still miss the hospital and Umbrella's generous treatment, take your share and get out to work normally! Do you hear me?" Because Umbrella's financial resources were enough to do many things, which was something Tang Tian hadn't expected.
Chapter 500 Isolation Zone
"Hello, viewers in America! What you are seeing now is the latest report from our reporter," a female reporter on the huge screen said, wearing a gray raincoat and braving the downpour to deliver the latest news to the audience.
Beside her stood several soldiers in Russian uniforms, constantly pushing and shoving the crowded people. Needless to say, these people, ignoring all attempts to stop them, were the journalists who were desperate for news material.
"At this moment, under the tight control of the local forces, you can see behind me," the reporter pointed behind her, and then the camera slowly turned to her back. "Although the sky is very dark and the rain is pouring down, this place is now filled with nearly five large passenger planes from different countries, and the planes are surrounded by tough barbed wire. Some of them are on high alert and have made all kinds of preparations."
"The captain has arrived, and the superheroes are ready." The person in charge, who looked like a Russian version of the Avengers, smiled and nodded. Perhaps it's a common practice in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but there are quite a few knock-off Avengers that imitate the American ones.
As the female reporter was speaking, a commander suddenly stepped forward and blocked the camera lens. The camera then began to shake violently, and the commander's reprimanding voice could be heard: "Who gave you permission to come here? Don't you know it's dangerous here? Get out of here! Get out of here! Filming is not allowed!..." Then the screen signal was cut off, and the entire screen went black.
As soon as a short-haired man tapped the black remote control in his hand, the entire screen first turned into a static-like display, then the power went out, and the signal was completely lost.
The man put down the remote control he was holding and leaned back on the thick, soft leather sofa, closing his eyes to rest. He looked somewhat tired; his face was sallow and haggard. A black military jumpsuit and leather gloves tightly wrapped his body, and sunglasses obscured his eyes, making it impossible to see his face.
This is a very old church. The rows of seats that used to line the center have long been removed, making the space feel quite empty. In their place, six rows of burning candles are arranged on both sides, illuminating the surroundings. A spiral candle chandelier hangs from the ceiling in the center of the church. The candlelight casts a red glow on the carpet that runs from the church entrance to the very front of the church.
The giant screen slowly sank into the ground, revealing a huge cross standing at the very front of the church. On it was nailed a human skeleton, which looked as if it had struggled desperately before dying, with all its bones twisted in agony.
Next to him was the leather sofa where the man sat, in the center. Clearly, what would seem terrifying to most people were nothing to the man. Right now, he wanted nothing more than rest; he simply lowered his head and gently rubbed his temples with his extremely pale index finger, adorned with a skull ring, which made him feel slightly better.
Less than five meters from the man on the church steps stood two bizarre figures. One of them, besides wearing a pair of somewhat tattered leather pants, had his upper body tightly bound with layers of bloodstained bandages. Thick liquid was constantly seeping from his skin. Even his head only revealed a horrifying eyeball, and his cheeks were marked with two dense stitches that looked as if they had been sewn together with steel needles.
The other one was extremely obese! Judging from his skin, he was probably Black, but he was covered in flabby flesh, almost four times the size of an average person. He was also significantly taller than the previous one, easily over three meters! Therefore, his clothes seemed completely mismatched with his appearance, probably just for show. This man had a ferocious face, and a thick iron chain was wrapped around his waist, one end of which was attached to a heavy axe. However, the axe didn't seem heavy at all when he held it.
The two strange men watched silently as the man leaned back on the sofa, saying nothing. After a moment, the man slowly raised his head, looked at the two men, and said calmly, "You saw the news just now; this is his masterpiece."
"Fatty" snorted first, his flabby flesh gurgling, and said disdainfully, "Is it that guy Carlota?"
The bandaged man standing to the side also showed a dismissive expression, muttering, "Who else but him could do something so foolish?"
Seeing that the two didn't seem to care, the man wasn't in a hurry. Instead, he said even more calmly, "This guy may seem stupid, but I think he's quite cunning. You two should be more careful in the future!"
"What? Him?" The fat man's voice suddenly rose. "Ennis, are you scared? We were trained by Hydra to be destroyed. Although you fell for him before, things are different now. Not to mention you, his entire previous squad was sent to hell by me. Hmph, Ennis, this isn't like you!"
Ennis didn't answer. Judging from his expression, he seemed to be in even more pain. At this moment, he was clutching his chest, breathing heavily. Only after he calmed down and let out a long sigh did the two people beside him see that Ennis's complexion had returned to normal, and his expression began to gradually turn cold.
The two remained silent, only Ennis said coldly, "I'm just worried that he's disrupting our plans. Although I don't particularly dislike him, no one can say for sure whether he might turn around and try to take advantage of us. Of course, I don't deny that he is indeed a very outstanding terrorist... element!"
"So, in your opinion, what is his purpose in doing this?" The bandaged man changed his tone and asked seriously.
“Either he’s acting rashly, or there’s still…” A glint flashed in Ennis’s eyes, but no one noticed, “…a survivor!”
The fat man and the bandaged man exchanged a glance, seemingly understanding something. Just then, a series of heavy footsteps echoed in the church. Ennis glanced at the figure at the door, his lips twitched, and a hint of joy appeared on his face. He said smugly, "He's here!"
The fat man and the bandaged man turned around and saw a man wearing a hooded jumpsuit slowly walking over. The high collar covered the lower part of his face, making it dark under the hood, so they couldn't see his face, which made him look very mysterious. However, his walking posture and figure were no different from ordinary people.
Chapter 501 Chaos
As the man approached, he merely glanced at the fat man and the bandaged man before casually stopping five meters in front of Ennis and calmly saying, "These two look like failed experiments!" The failed experiments the mysterious man was referring to were, of course, the fat man and the bandaged man.
Ennis chuckled and replied, "Whether it is or not, we'll know after the contest."
The man glanced at the two monsters standing beside him, pointed at the fat man, and said, "Let's go with him. I prefer guys who look decent."
The fat man and the bandaged man were already furious at the mysterious man's disdainful attitude towards them. Now, he was pointing and gesturing at the bandaged man, which enraged him even more. No one had ever dared to mock him like that, despite his unsightly appearance. He was about to take a step forward when Ennis shouted, "Stop! Let Bill handle this kind of revenge!"
The bandaged man snorted coldly and turned his head to the side. He still dared not disobey Ennis's orders. Fat Bill was also furious at this moment. Now that he heard Ennis's permission, he immediately took a step, and the iron chains around his waist clattered. He vowed to tear the man in front of him to pieces and then eat him piece by piece!
The sharp, massive axe slowly approached the mysterious man. Judging by size alone, the two were no match for him. An ordinary person would have fled in terror at the sight of Bill, but the man remained completely still. Facing the approaching behemoth, he made no move, simply standing silently. These men were merely monsters trained by Hydra, specifically tasked with destroying everything connected to the Umbrella Corporation.
This enraged Bill even more. With a roar, he raised the heavy axe above his head and brought it down with a vengeance. It seemed he didn't want to chop the annoying man into pieces, but rather to mince him into a bloody pulp!
Just as the giant axe was about to strike, it suddenly stopped two fingers above the man's head! The man remained standing still, while Bill... At that moment, a long, scorpion-tail-like tentacle shot out from the ground behind Bill, piercing through his massive body and tightly binding the giant axe in his hand, rendering him immobile!
The constantly writhing tentacles were utterly disgusting. They were also constantly secreting a viscous liquid, which startled the bandaged man! He looked behind the man and, sure enough, beneath his robes, a tentacle was deeply embedded in the ground!
Bill's face grew increasingly grim. Just as he was about to struggle, he heard a clapping sound behind him. It was Ennis, who laughed and praised, "It's truly perfect! Haha... Alright, alright, that's enough for today, Bill, don't take it to heart!"
Upon hearing Ennis's words, the mysterious man's long tentacle loosened and slowly retracted into the ground, disappearing into the man's black robe.
Bill was furious at such an insult and was about to retaliate when Ennis laughed and said, "Come on! Let's welcome our new warrior—Carter John."
The bandaged man standing nearby exclaimed in surprise, "What! Could he also be... a fusion of the T-virus and a human body?"
Ennis laughed and said, "That's right, he's one of the four incomplete Hydra members, just like you and me! However, I didn't expect that they could fuse so perfectly."
Upon hearing this, Bill's anger subsided by half. He slowly sheathed his giant axe, and his expression changed. The injury he had sustained earlier seemed to have never happened. The wound left by the tentacle piercing through him was now sprouting countless new tissues and slowly healing.
Before turning around, Bill reluctantly said to Carter, "Hmph! Although you're like me, I don't really like self-righteous people!"
The man smiled at the enormous Bill and said, "I forgot to tell you, although I like guys who are reasonably good-looking, I don't like fat guys."
"Attention all passengers and crew!" Chris, armed with a QBZ-95 sniper rifle, began shouting in English to the passenger plane below. "You have five minutes to get off the plane, hands behind your heads, and do not panic. Otherwise, we will blow up the plane in five minutes! I repeat, if there is no movement, we will blow up the plane in five minutes!"
