Tokyo today. Because of the purges, many no longer find death terrifying; instead, they see it as a release. However, the increasing number of mutated creatures is making the suffering unbearable for the survivors. The island nation's surroundings have been completely sealed off, prohibiting anything from passing through. Cruisers and aircraft carriers from multiple countries have been deployed there, and missile launch sites for several nations have been built. The purpose is self-evident.
After a month of cleansing operations, the survivors on the island nation could not survive. They might survive for five consecutive days without food. Some older professors had previously stated that it was impossible to survive more than five days without food; however, the situation in the radiation-filled area was not as they had described. This was because not only were T-virus mutated creatures attacking the survivors, but also lizards mutated by nuclear radiation were devouring the few remaining survivors. Fortunately, the number of mutated creatures was not yet too large, and humans could handle the situation, so it had not attracted the attention of any major powers.
"This year marks some time since the cleansing operation, and since the first Raccoon City biohazard incident. The global fight against Hydra has intensified, but organizations worldwide haven't found the hidden Hydra. Furthermore, countries are dedicated to developing serum drugs to counteract the T-virus and are striving to create more virus-free safe zones within their borders to further showcase their seemingly scientific achievements in the international community, thereby exerting greater influence over other countries." Tang Tian calmly observed the latest news; currently, the situation wasn't particularly complex and didn't significantly impact world order.
Of course, that information is only known to the high-ranking officials of those countries. Currently, it's just a clandestine exchange, and Umbrella Corporation continues to sell antidotes to those powers for research.
However, although this war was fought without gunfire, it progressed exceptionally smoothly. News reports about the T-virus and the attention of almost all high-ranking officials were focused on the mutated species and zombie attacks on humans. As the cause of the biohazard crisis, the US government formed the BSAA (Biohazard Defense and Assessment Alliance) in addition to S.H.I.E.L.D., and this organization was also a concern for them.
The BSAA (Bio-Terrorism Defense and Assessment Alliance) is actually a special anti-bio-terrorist force established by multiple countries and regions. It was officially established two months after the Tokyo purge operation and did not have an official name before. This team has the ability to respond quickly and handle emergencies. Its predecessor was the United Nations Special Operations Group in South Africa. It has received unanimous praise from the international community for its operations in aiding South American countries such as Egypt and Namibia. The birth of this organization can be considered a coincidence.
Today, the United States remains a global superpower. Many years ago, it was designated a world-safe zone, meaning the spread of the T-virus had been completely contained. It possesses not only the world's most advanced technology but also a vast number of heroes. Therefore, to prevent a large-scale resurgence of the virus, the geographical borders near the island nation have been completely closed, with only designated passageways, airports, and train stations allowed to operate. Unrestricted entry and exit are prohibited, and strict virus monitoring devices conduct 24/7 city-wide surveillance.
Of course, this doesn't mean there won't be zombies. In such a densely populated city, with its complex surface transportation system, the underground pipe network is even more intricate, and with overflowing sewage and piles of garbage, it's incredibly difficult to clean. Therefore, for any country, managing the vast network of underground pipes is an extremely troublesome problem.
Of course, another reason is the genuine admiration from other countries. Sometimes I think that a country like the United States, with a total population of only 3 million, would be unlikely to be caught off guard by a sudden biohazard crisis. The superheroes' valiant resistance could eliminate all the infections, provided that they all take action and stop hiding, including the large number of mutants.
Other countries either encountered problems in their procedures or made serious errors in government decision-making, resulting in the failure to implement timely domestic prevention and control measures. Ultimately, this led to the rampant spread of the T-virus and the widespread presence of zombies. Tokyo, in particular, was abandoned by the island nation's authorities in the early stages of the infection and undoubtedly became a dead city. Now, after being cleansed by the nuclear explosion, it has been completely transformed into a wasteland.
Chapter 291 Attack
The intoxicating sunset cast its afterglow, shimmering New York City. Pigeons flitted about, and a gentle breeze swept across the ground. This breathtaking city could only be found in America, though its beauty also highlighted its perilous side. In the island nation, the former bustle had faded, and only the gentle breeze testified to its past prosperity.
Jill and Chris both shudder at the memory of the nuclear explosion two months ago. They were survivors of that cleansing operation, and it's safe to say they were incredibly lucky. Leon and Claire were equally fortunate; not only did they encounter the Green Hornet and Deadpool, but it was their abilities that allowed them to survive—that was their true stroke of luck.
According to a message from Claire's brother Chris a few days ago, the Umbrella Corporation's Tactical Rescue Special Operations Team STERS has finally reorganized after disappearing for some time. Chris is the captain and has recruited new members, including Claire's brother. Jill is very happy about this. Thinking back to the days when this prestigious team attracted many people, not just anyone could join. Moreover, they would be facing countless horrors and dangers. However, no one was worried about their safety.
Jill's team, though recently re-established, is highly valued by the local government. Its members have undergone rigorous training and possess extensive knowledge of the T-virus. Therefore, the team's headquarters are located in a building not far from New York City. This allows for rapid location determination and decisive action, minimizing travel time. Secondly, the location is strategically important, with convenient transportation. Transportation is provided by Umbrella Corporation to prevent Hydra from further releasing the T-virus and exacerbating the situation, and the superheroes have a responsibility to provide support at any time.
Jill had just stood up when she felt a tingling sensation in her legs, indicating she had indeed been sitting for quite some time. She glanced at her watch; it was already one o'clock in the afternoon, half an hour since Chris had mentioned the time, but he still hadn't appeared, which puzzled Jill.
"Is there no mission today? That can't be. Although Hydra doesn't dare to show itself openly, I've heard they've instructed other organizations to carry out a big plan," Jill thought to herself. She slowly moved to the spotless French window, put her hands behind her back, and began to quietly gaze out the window.
On either side of her were two bonsai trees, lush and vibrant with greenery, a gift from Chris when Jill fled Tokyo. They had grown so densely in such a short time, as if proving that life, like the plant itself, was full of tenacious vitality.
The weather today seemed rather gloomy, with a thick, inky cloud drifting towards the city from afar, obscuring the already weak sunlight and plunging the entire city into darkness. Moments later, several flashes of light could be seen within the cloud. Then, a faint rumble of thunder began to sound.
Perhaps due to the weather, Jill began to feel slightly stuffy; danger always gives you a warning. Jill quickly arrived at the airport. Although there was no mission this time, the BSAA organization was there. Chris had suddenly told Jill about the BSAA, an organization controlled by Hydra, that was preparing to attack America. So, Jill went to the airport Chris had mentioned.
Looking out from here, Jill saw the only international airport passenger terminal in the area that could operate to the outside world, standing quietly in the distance. Several large passenger planes could be vaguely seen taking off and landing, but what Jill saw puzzled him. According to their information, there were no flights scheduled for today; why were several large passenger planes suddenly appearing at an American airport?
Jill felt a slight unease, but since she hadn't received any special notifications or been reminded by anyone, she figured she was just overthinking it.
However, just as he was lost in thought, she suddenly saw a passenger plane, roughly a Boeing 747, roar past the headquarters building. The massive airflow generated by the plane's large fuselage made the entire building shake. The plane was flying at a very low altitude, only about a hundred meters above the building's roof. As it roared past, Jill could almost see the English lettering painted on the fuselage. Jill was still very surprised by what she saw.
Jill remained steadfast, staring at the direction the plane was flying. Needless to say, this Boeing 747 was heading towards a major American city, and it was an American aircraft of unknown nationality. As for the unusual flight pattern it was making, it was most likely going to attack that building, or even destroy that place.
Seeing this, Jill could no longer contain herself. Just as she was about to call Chris to ask what had happened, Chris, who was almost an hour late, strode in, holding a stack of freshly printed documents, looking nervous as if he had encountered some danger.
Upon seeing Chris, before Jill could ask anything, Chris spoke first: "Jill, hurry! We have to move out, and we have to leave immediately! It seems that America is in chaos too; Hydra's target is the Pentagon."
Chris's voice was urgent, but every word was clear. Seeing his appearance, Jill knew that something unusual must have happened. Jill quickly asked, "Chris, why would Hydra send people to attack the Pentagon? And I've been waiting for you here for an hour, but you haven't come."
Chris, the young man, wasn't particularly burly, but his well-defined muscles were very prominent, rising and falling with his rapid breathing. He glanced at Jill, then handed her the documents while explaining, "Originally, there were no missions today, and I was planning to invite you to dinner later. But just half an hour ago, the ground control center at this international airport suddenly discovered that several large passenger planes from different countries had been taken over by someone else. No matter how the ground command personnel tried to stop it, it was to no avail. Moreover, they discovered that the people on the planes were sent by Hydra, and their purpose may be to attack iconic American buildings."
"Oh no, what do we do now, Chris? Does the company know about this?" Jill asked疑惑地, realizing the seriousness of the situation.
Chapter 292 Inevitable
"Don't worry, I've already sent Leon to stop it. They're probably there by now." Chris had just finished speaking when his phone rang. Chris picked up the phone in confusion and asked, "Leon, did you intercept that plane I mentioned? It's extremely dangerous. I can't reach the boss."
“Chris, I’m sorry. That’s not the passenger plane you’re talking about. We’ve intercepted other passenger planes as well, and we haven’t found anything like that. The plane’s communication system was just jammed, and the pilot had a slight problem. You don’t think there’s any danger here, do you? The BSAA organization I’ve temporarily joined said the same thing as you, but there’s nothing like what you’re describing.” Leon said as if joking, seemingly surprised by Chris’s news.
"Yes, you're right. But I need to continue searching for those people. You need to be on guard against a sudden attack from Hydra." Chris said calmly before hanging up the phone.
Chris knew things weren't that simple, so he prepared to work with Jill to find the Hydra members. It must be said that the two organizations have a very close relationship, sharing resources and information.
That evening, the sky over America was gloomy, giving no one a moment to breathe. Just moments before, it was only slightly overcast, but now dark clouds rolled in and a strong wind was blowing. Although it was afternoon, it felt as dark as dusk.
The roadside appeared increasingly empty, and vehicles slowed down, idly passing each changing traffic light. On the sidewalks, aside from a few hurried figures, only listless street urchins remained, their faces expressionless, seemingly indifferent to everything.
Before long, dark clouds loomed overhead, so low they made it hard to breathe, and a blinding flash of lightning suddenly appeared. Then, a deafening rumble of thunder followed, accompanied by a deluge of rain. Large raindrops pelted the ground relentlessly, and the once dry asphalt streets were soon flooded, the water swirling and flowing into the deep sewers.
The streetlights on both sides of the street were already lit, but perhaps because of the overcast sky, the light appeared dim and weak. There, tiny specks of light lined up, sometimes winding, sometimes straight, sometimes changing direction, meandering through the city. The branches of the trees in the green belts on both sides of the street swayed endlessly in the howling wind, as if resigned and desperately at the mercy of the wind.
Above him, the blades of the Umbrella attack helicopter spun rapidly. Powerful airflow relentlessly pounded against the silent Chris below, while countless raindrops stung his face like thorns. Upon closer inspection, his body even trembled slightly, yet his resolute gaze remained unchanged. He had found the key to the problem.
Chris stared down at her feet, everything rushing past in the rain. Fully armed Jill remained silent, letting the rain stream down her face, a growing tension creeping into her mind. Although this wasn't her first mission, this situation seemed far more serious. The Barrett sniper rifle lay silently beside her, its barrel feeling cold. While this wasn't a biological attack, the consequences would undoubtedly be severe.
"Whoosh whoosh whoosh whoosh," the camouflage-painted armed helicopter that Chris was in slowly rose from one side. At the door of its cabin, a fully armed teammate was vigorously waving his arms in the downpour, as if making some kind of gesture to the other helicopters.
Chris glanced silently behind the plane, took a deep breath, and slowly exhaled. Not far from the Pentagon, nine BSAA attack helicopters with rotating blades followed, indicating that almost the entire anti-biochemical force had been mobilized. Upon seeing their ally's hand signal, they all simultaneously began to descend.
Ahead, the Pentagon's ground command building and Towers 1 and 2 were clearly visible. However, this place, which usually didn't seem too busy, was now crowded with a dark mass of armed people. The armed people were orderly, dressed in special forces camouflage uniforms, and lined up neatly, maintaining a certain distance from the aircraft. Needless to say, that was General Ross's proud deterrent force.
Jill looked down from the helicopter and couldn't help but marvel. This was the first time she had ever seen such a disciplined unit from the air; she had never seen such a large-scale scene before.
Just then, Chris's voice came through the headset attached to the helmet. Jill didn't dare to relax, her nerves were on edge, and she listened carefully to his commands.
Lyon did not participate in this operation for a simple reason. As a key member of the anti-biohazard unit, he could not come without confirming the danger. Lyon, one of the second-level commanders of the International Biohazard Alliance, had gone to the military a few days earlier to replace Umbrella Corporation to discuss the large-scale T-virus outbreak in Tokyo.
Speaking of the cleansing of Tokyo, geographically speaking, it should be considered part of the Umbrella Corporation, and also the breeding ground for the T-virus research and spread. Although most of the mountains there were razed to the ground by Marcus's attack, the Tokyo incident made other high-ranking officials truly aware of the dangers involved.
Despite the rain, Jill had no worries about the reliability of the communication equipment, and the sound in the headset was very clear.
"Attention all team members! Attention all team members! We have reached the Pentagon airspace. Keep your distance!" Chris's voice was clear in the headset, but the howling wind could still be heard. In such bad weather, it would be difficult for anyone to speak.
"Unit 1, you are responsible for patrolling the entire area. Report any issues immediately!"
"Unit One, understood!" As soon as the voice finished speaking into the headset, Jill saw the helicopter that had led the team quickly take off and fly towards the distant helipad.
"Unit Two, you're in charge of the area in front of you. Make sure nothing goes wrong with it," Chris's serious voice came through the headset.
Needless to say, Jill and Chris were members of the second aircraft, responsible for the aerial sniping mission. She looked down and suddenly noticed that the markings on the fuselage of the aircraft were the same as those on the plane that had just taken off from the airport. It should be a Boeing 747 passenger plane from Canada. However, at this moment, the surrounding short-range missiles had already targeted that plane and destroyed the one that had suddenly appeared.
At this moment, General Ross's remotely dispatched troops destroyed the plane. However, a violent explosion suddenly occurred inside the Pentagon, and the iconic American building was destroyed. To everyone's astonishment, Hydra dealt a heavy blow to the American military and Umbrella Corporation.
Unbeknownst to them, the planned air raid was merely a decoy; the real danger was carried out by spies sent by Hydra. Tang Tian was unconcerned about Hydra's petty tricks, as the attack targeted someone else, not Umbrella headquarters. Therefore, although Tang Tian knew their plan, it didn't affect his actions.
Chapter 293 Evolution and Battle
“It should be time to send Jack to the Arklay Mountains. The mutated creatures there will be enough for Jack to train well.” Sitting on the way to where the Hulk appeared, Tang Tian thought to himself. Then, he opened his wrist computer and commanded Wesker: “Send Jack to the Arklay Mountains. He needs to fight there. The wasteland world full of radiation is a good place for fighting. It’s full of evolution and battles.”
“Yes, boss, I understand,” Wesker replied quickly without hesitation. Then, he followed Tang Tian’s orders and sent Jack to the Arklay Mountains.
Tang Tian used Jack to test the combat capabilities of a series of mutated creatures, thereby obtaining valuable data. His investigation of the island nation revealed it to be the main base of these mutated creatures. The sheer number of mutated creatures surprised Tang Tian; not only were the T-virus organisms mutated, but some normal organisms were also undergoing drastic mutations.
“You’ve only been here an hour, looks like you can’t wait to fight,” Wesker muttered. “Do you know what you’re doing in the Arklay Mountains, Jack?”
Within an hour, Jack had everything ready. First, there was all sorts of wilderness equipment. Tang Tian also gave Jack some Gauss weapons and some laser weapons. This allowed Jack to continuously test the strength of those creatures. The abundance of mutations there made him think that something might appear, such as some creatures like King Kong.
“Alright, I got it. I’m going there to fight; that’s the way to make the virus evolve,” Jack said coldly to Wesker.
Then Jack boarded his private helicopter and headed to the Arklay Mountains. After the cleanup operation, the area was filled with radiation. The T-virus had temporarily lost its transmission route, but the situation was still dangerous. The radiation had caused many organisms to mutate, making them even more powerful than those infected with the T-virus. Jack arrived at a place resembling a sewer, pitch black and unable to see anything inside.
"What the hell is this place? Which way do I go?" Jack asked Zeus on his wrist computer as soon as he arrived. Of course, Zeus wouldn't tell him where he was or how to get there for no reason.
"Just follow my instructions!" Fortunately, there was Zeus, the super artificial intelligence, who could hear Jack's voice and gave him many commands, which reassured Jack a lot.
"This was once a secret passage for the Umbrella Corporation, only used in emergencies, otherwise it's been abandoned," Zeus said calmly, his eyes seemingly filled with helplessness.
No wonder it's so damp inside, and the smell is extremely unpleasant. After the cleanup operation, many things were almost completely destroyed, most notably the result of Tang Tian releasing the Tsar Bomba.
“Go straight to your left, there’s a door there. Open the door and keep going, go around a few corners and you’ll reach the exit!” Zeus said calmly.
This simple fact left Jack somewhat puzzled. His sixth sense clearly told him that something was off about this strange place. While the aura here wasn't as dangerous as facing a hunter or a tyrant, it wasn't something to be ignored either. There were definitely some unknown mutated creatures inside. Creatures unknown to others.
“This passage is about a kilometer long, and the exit is in the Arklay Mountains. Yes, it’s a shortcut. But I’ve discovered that the exit in the Arklay Mountains has been destroyed because of the boss’s super nuclear bomb. In other words, this passage is not safe. There are no surveillance devices in this passage, and I can’t help you. You’ll have to rely on yourself!” Zeus said confidently, as if he wasn’t worried about Jack’s safety at all.
Jack nodded. He said seriously, "Don't worry, I won't die in here!" He took about twenty steps to the left. Finally, Jack vaguely saw a dark iron door. He reached out and opened it, and immediately a stronger, more pungent smell rushed out.
Jack choked and couldn't help but sneeze a few times. Zeus suddenly became serious and said, "Be careful, there are also some high-energy creatures there, which means they might not be real creatures."
Jack nodded. Then, almost holding his nose, he stepped inside. This so-called secret passage had probably never been used since it was built. The survivors of the Arklay Laboratory had almost no chance to use this passage, which is why it became a dangerous place after the purge.
The moment Jack entered the passage, he focused all his attention. His senses, along with his sixth sense, were activated at full intensity, not missing a single movement within ten meters in front of and behind him.
The Marvel universe is far too dangerous, and the combination of the game version of Resident Evil makes it even more so. Jack, though unaware of this, knew he couldn't afford to be complacent. He constantly reminded himself of this, and activated his adamantium claws, ready to deal with any impending danger.
The entire secret passage was eerie and terrifying, filled with an aura of danger. The dim, flickering light added to the dread. Walking through the passage, one could reach out and touch the cold, hard walls on either side. If one stretched out their hands and stood on tiptoe, they could touch the ceiling, which was also clearly made of solid stone.
The narrow, secret passage was built deep inside Mount Arklay. Umbrella Corporation clearly put a great deal of thought and effort into constructing this research base; carving such a passage through solid rock required an enormous amount of manpower, resources, and capital. Of course, the results were excellent; the facilities remained intact after the cleanup operation, demonstrating the high quality of Umbrella's buildings.
This is to be expected; the original founder of the Umbrella Corporation was Edward Asiford, and arms dealer Oswell Spencer also participated in the design, so it's not surprising at all. Both men came from prestigious families and conglomerates. Before the establishment of Umbrella Corporation, they had no other source of income; their biochemical research was supported by the financial resources of these two families. The complex and heavily fortified mansion itself was Spencer's brainchild.
Jack shook his head, clearing his mind of distractions. His priority now was to safely traverse the passage. Although he was going to fight there, he dared not rush forward recklessly, taking each step with extreme caution. He had fought against Umbrella Corporation's various biological weapons before, and Jack knew their terrifying power firsthand.
Jack constantly reminded himself of the extreme danger here. Tang Tian, on the other hand, kept a close eye on Jack's situation. His adamantium claws still gleamed in the dim light, like a bloodthirsty beast waiting for its prey to walk into its trap; a battle could break out at any moment.
Chapter 294 Godzilla
Jack was careful and cautious, but that didn't mean he was afraid of them. Judging from the aura he sensed, the monsters in the secret passage weren't very dangerous, and Jack should be able to handle them.
T-virus organisms are not always the most dangerous; organisms exposed to nuclear radiation are equally dangerous, such as some mutated organisms whose attack power surpasses that of T-virus organisms, and whose cells possess power beyond that of viruses.
Jack's guess was correct. Just then, a dark shadow pounced from a hidden corner in front of him, and its speed surprised Jack.
Although Jack's sixth sense was extremely sharp, allowing him to detect danger in time, it was not a superpower that could predict the future. The sudden attack of the mutated creature from the ceiling really startled him.
Fortunately, Jack reacted quickly enough. Seeing the creature's lunging attack, he knew its attack power was considerable. He immediately stepped back and followed up with a right front kick. This is a typical defensive counter-attack move in Sanda (Chinese kickboxing). After all, Jack had practiced Sanda in the virtual world for a while, so he was quite familiar with the basic techniques.
The mutated creature before him was only about the size of a house cat. It missed its target and landed on the ground, not even having time to make a further move before Jack's right foot struck it hard in the body. The moment Jack saw it, he knew that the thing wasn't a T-virus creature. It lacked the basic characteristics of a T-virus being; it was simply larger, and its ability to ambush was indicative of its intelligence. The mutated creature resembled an oversized lizard, its gray body also giving it a dinosaur-like appearance.
"Uh, it looks like Godzilla. We've gone too far; the world has been inexplicably affected again." Tang Tian said with some surprise, looking at the slightly clearer image on his wrist computer.
Jack's strength was immense; this monster weighed at most twenty pounds. The outcome of my kick was predictable. The kick was aimed upwards, and with a loud "thud," Godzilla slammed into the ceiling and then fell to the ground with a thud, motionless, clearly dead.
When Jack went up to take a look, the mutated creature looked like a large lizard, just like the legendary dinosaur. It was obviously a mutated monster that had been exposed to radiation.
Jack used his claws to stab the creature's head several times, making sure it was dead. This thing had been exposed to nuclear radiation; who knew if it might suddenly come back to life? It was safer to crush its head. Finishing off the creature was the first step Jack had learned, and it was something he did after experiencing some difficulties.
If this secret passage were filled with Godzillas like these, it would be much more pleasant for Jack. He could take them all down without even using his claws, but obviously, that's impossible, because just then, a vibrating sound rang out. Jack's first thought was that something big was coming.
The voice was so familiar; it was the same voice Jack heard when he first arrived at the Umbrella base. In that spot in the underground base, there was a Tyrant with that same voice. Of course, it wasn't a T-virus creature yet; it looked like a Godzilla that had been exposed to radiation.
Thinking of the tyrant's terrifying fighting power, Jack couldn't help but think. If he had encountered the tyrant before he gained power, he would likely be finished. Jack didn't even need to think about it; he already knew that would be the outcome of being killed by the tyrant.
But the situation has developed far beyond Jack's expectations. He originally thought that he would encounter some relatively easy-to-deal-with T-virus creatures here, but reality has proven that there are creatures that can surpass the T-virus creatures.
The vibrating sound grew closer, the sense of danger intensifying. It was Godzilla. It was indeed enormous. Jack's sixth sense proved invaluable; it could distinguish various different auras. Of course, it wasn't omnipotent. For example, this time, at the beginning, it could only make a simple prediction: the passage was dangerous. But as the enemy drew nearer, its ability to detect and differentiate dangerous auras grew stronger.
