"This matter is a bit complicated, and it involves other people's private affairs, so I can't go into details." Hawkeye shrugged, seeing the gossip burning in everyone's eyes. "If you want to know, then ask the person involved. Well, it's getting late, and I should head back."
Spider-Man, seemingly realizing he'd messed things up, stammered, "Oh, well, I have a date, I have to go." With that, he sped away from the barbecue restaurant at almost full speed.
And so, the dinner, which began happily but ended hastily, came to a close. Everyone went back to prepare for the press conference tomorrow. Adam had told them all to attend, as if some decision was to be announced at the conference.
Nothing happened overnight. At 9:30 a.m. the next day, a simple press conference was set up by S.H.I.E.L.D. personnel on a temporary site that had been cleared out in front of Stark Tower. All the media outlets that had been notified the day before, including news broadcasters and other media personnel, had arrived. Only the superheroes, who were the main characters, had not yet arrived.
However, the press conference was scheduled to start at 10 o'clock, so the reporters who came did not complain. Instead, they quietly discussed the events of the past few days and speculated about what Superman might say later.
"Hey, do you guys think that government announcement is true? Could there really be aliens?" a reporter quietly asked a senior colleague next to him.
“It’s possible. After all, theoretically speaking, we shouldn’t be alone in the universe. There must be other intelligent life.” The old reporter answered his back, but he continued, “However, how could an alien invasion of Earth go undetected by other countries? And we haven’t seen any signs.”
“I was there that day. At first, we received the order to evacuate secretly, and we didn’t know what was going on. When we came back later, these blocks were shrouded in a green light curtain, and we couldn’t see what was going on inside at all.” A middle-aged man in a black suit seemed to have overheard the conversation between the two people next to him and couldn’t help but interject.
"Oh, this has happened before? How come we didn't know?" the young reporter asked with some doubt.
"That's because the police and military covered it up together," the middle-aged man continued. "But for almost ten minutes in the middle, the green screen disappeared, and we all saw what was happening inside—a huge monster fighting with superheroes."
"Since you've said that, what evidence do you have?" The young man asked, somewhat disbelievingly, "You're sitting here, you're a reporter too, don't tell me you didn't take any pictures?"
"Who said there was no photo? But I don't know what happened, all the electronic devices were destroyed," the middle-aged man said regretfully.
"Tch, so you don't have any evidence either," the young man said dismissively.
"You, hmph, Superman and the others will definitely produce evidence soon enough." The middle-aged man said somewhat angrily, "They're fighting bravely for Earth, and you still don't believe them?"
"Alright, alright, it's about to start, stop talking," the elderly reporter quickly interjected, trying to smooth things over.
Chapter 308 Press Conference
At 10:00 AM New York time, the press conference began on schedule. Of course, Superman and the other superheroes, who were the main characters, had not yet appeared, but the course of the battle that day was being shown at a rapid pace on a projection screen at the press conference venue.
"Oh, what is this?"
"Could it be related to what happened that day?"
"That's right, that's what I saw that day. Look at that huge monster, isn't it the culprit that destroyed these buildings?"
The reporters began to discuss the footage. Based on their years of experience, they could tell that the footage was real and not computer-generated. However, even so, no one was without doubts. After all, when it came to technology, it seemed that the technology the superhumans possessed was far more advanced than that of the most developed countries in the world.
In about half an hour, the battle that had lasted for nearly four or five hours that day was quickly played out. Then, Superman, the protagonist, descended from the sky in his superhero suit and stood on the simple steps. He gently pressed his hands together to calm the reporters who were about to ask questions.
"Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to today's press conference about the Battle of New York." Superman started simply, and continued, "I know that after seeing this video, you will definitely doubt the authenticity of the matter, but don't worry, I would not lie to you, and I have sufficient evidence for you."
At that moment, an image of an alien corpse appeared on the screen behind Superman. Superman pointed at the image and said, "This is the race that invaded Earth a few days ago. They call themselves Chitauri and come from a distant universe."
At that moment, a reporter raised his hand high, and Superman had no choice but to stop explaining and ask, "Excuse me, is there anything you would like to ask?"
"Since you've said they come from a distant alien planet, how did they get to Earth? And how did they discover Earth?" the reporter asked.
“If you’re doing this again, if you know anything about Captain America, then you should know about a secret organization of Nazi Germany during World War II,” Superman asked.
"You mean Hydra?" a slightly older reporter replied immediately.
“That’s right, it was Hydra. That organization used a mysterious tool called the Cosmic Cube to develop an energy weapon, which was the first time in human history that an energy weapon appeared.” Superman continued, “Of course, I’m not talking about Hydra here, but about that mysterious tool, the gem with infinite energy called the Cosmic Cube.”
"The Cosmic Cube?"
The reporters below listened and scribbled in their notebooks. Although the press conference was being broadcast live, some people still preferred to watch the news through traditional media.
"Just a few months ago, S.H.I.E.L.D.'s research department began studying the Tesseract that my father had sealed away for nearly fifty years. Of course, according to them, all of this was to prevent alien invasion."
Superman sold out S.H.I.E.L.D. without hesitation. It has to be said that although Superman inherited the memories of his previous life, he is no longer the kind-hearted Clark Kent of his previous life, but Howard Stark's son, Adam Stark. It is not his style to be bullied without fighting back.
He continued, "Of course, S.H.I.E.L.D.'s statement is also wrong, but unfortunately they ignored my father's warning. My father said that using power that one does not understand is a very dangerous thing."
"You mean, S.H.I.E.L.D., this international organization, is the one that attracted aliens?" a female reporter couldn't help but ask. This was quite a piece of news.
"Because they didn't know the specific capabilities of the Tesseract, S.H.I.E.L.D. developed a technology to open a portal to space. Unfortunately, this technology was exploited by aliens who had their eyes on Earth. They eventually opened a portal to the Chitauri planet on the top floor of Stark Tower, which ultimately led to the invasion of Earth," Superman explained calmly.
Another reporter stood up and said, "Since that's the truth, why did you choose to conceal the situation at the time? And according to our information, you evacuated the residents here first before sealing off the battlefield. Doesn't this mean that you already knew someone was going to open the portal?"
Superman remained calm after hearing this and recounted Loki's invasion of the S.H.I.E.L.D. experimental base and his control of Earth's scientists. He also stated that when he received the news, Loki had already wreaked havoc on S.H.I.E.L.D.'s Helicarrier, and he could only go to rescue the S.H.I.E.L.D. personnel before heading to the battlefield.
"So you mean you knew about the alien invasion, but you only ordered the people to evacuate instead of trying to stop it?" a reporter shouted.
"I'm sorry, but I'm not a god after all. And if I manage to stop the opening of this portal but fail to capture Loki, Earth will still be invaded by aliens in the future. I just want to teach that alien who wants to invade Earth a lesson." Superman glanced at the other person and said calmly.
"But I still think you're making excuses and leaving everything to S.H.I.E.L.D. If you had intervened from the beginning, perhaps the destruction of these blocks could have been avoided," the reporter pressed on, not letting up.
"I'm not a god, after all. I can't stop every enemy's plot every time. Besides, this incident was deliberately covered up by S.H.I.E.L.D." Superman explained for a moment, then stopped. Whether you believe it or not, Superman wouldn't give a good look to someone who was obviously targeting him.
"Judging from your tone, you seem to have a lot of opinions about S.H.I.E.L.D. Is this because S.H.I.E.L.D. tried to arrest Justice League members while you were unconscious?" another reporter stood up and asked.
“That’s right, I do have a problem with S.H.I.E.L.D., not just for the reason you just mentioned, but also because of some of the choices and measures they took in this incident that I find extremely annoying!” Superman made no attempt to hide his dislike for S.H.I.E.L.D., and then immediately added, “You might find my words a bit strange, but let me show you what else S.H.I.E.L.D. did besides covering up this incident!”
After Superman finished speaking, he asked Athena to play the recording of the meeting that had been intercepted during the hacking of S.H.I.E.L.D.'s communications system. This caused an uproar among the reporters below and all the humans watching the live broadcast, because they clearly heard that the S.H.I.E.L.D. council had no regard for the comfort of the superheroes or the citizens of New York and directly issued the decision to drop a nuclear bomb on New York City.
“This is a scene I captured a few days ago. I think you should know why I’m so disgusted with S.H.I.E.L.D., right?” Superman said calmly. “You should know that my father, Mr. Howard Stark, was one of the founders of S.H.I.E.L.D. But even so, in my eyes, the current S.H.I.E.L.D. has completely deviated from the original wishes of my father and other founders, and has become a violent organization.”
The impact of the previous scene was enormous; almost all the reporters below wanted to ask questions. Superman then randomly pointed to a reporter and let them ask their question.
"That nuclear bomb, well, although we saw them mention it in the video, what I want to ask is, where did that nuclear bomb go?" a reporter asked.
"If you had looked closely just now, you would have seen my brother, Iron Man Tony Stark, carrying a missile on his shoulder in his final moments. It was a missile with a nuclear warhead. In the end, the Sun Goddess used teleportation magic to send it into the portal, to the planet of the Chitauri." Superman pointed to the photo that appeared on the screen behind him as he spoke, and said calmly.
“Actually, if it weren’t for that damn nuclear bomb, the battle might have ended much sooner, and that giant monster that appeared at the end wouldn’t have had a chance to come out of the portal.” Superman continued, “Because at that moment, Iron Man and the others had already rescued the scientist who was controlled by the evil god and had mastered the method to close the portal.”
"I see. So what were those robots that appeared at the scene that day? Could they be considered Superman's private army?" a reporter suddenly asked.
Chapter 309 Press Conference
"The robot army can indeed be considered my private army, but rest assured, my robot army will not interfere in any internal wars on Earth," the man said calmly.
Because humanity has consistently stated that it will not intervene in any political struggles within the Earth, and has consistently done so, most people still trust humanity's credibility. Since humanity has promised not to allow robot armies to participate in human civil wars, then it must be true.
"I'm calling you all here today for three reasons. First, to tell you about the alien invasion of Earth. Second, to expose all of S.H.I.E.L.D.'s overreaching actions. I've already handed over the evidence to the governments of various countries, and I think they'll handle things well." He paused, then continued, "The last thing is something I've had for a long time. With the efforts of the past few days and the support of some friends, I've started preparing for it. Now I'm going to tell you about this."
"Mr. Ren, what are the specific details of what you just mentioned?" a reporter asked.
"As everyone knows now, we are not alone in the universe. There are countless planets with intelligent life, and countless alien creatures with far higher levels of evolution than us." Images of Loki, Thor, and the Chitauri appeared on the screen behind him. He pointed to the images and said, "These aliens either have a friendly attitude towards Earth, or they want to invade Earth and turn us humans into their slaves."
He paused for a moment, then continued, "Actually, I knew several years ago that an extremely powerful cosmic expert had his eye on this, and for this reason, he handed over some technology to various governments and sold body enhancement fluid to humans at a very low price. All of this I did was for the crisis we will encounter in the future."
"Ah, I see."
"So, does that mean our Earth will be invaded by aliens again in the future?"
"What's there to be afraid of? Aren't there these top-tier heroes?"
After hearing what was said, the reporters below began to whisper among themselves, but were soon silenced.
"However, my actions over the past few years have been completely useless, because most countries not only use the technological power I gave them to protect humanity, but also constantly conduct experiments on high-powered weapons." The man said with a stern face, "I know they will definitely say that we manufacture weapons to defend against foreign enemies, but the weapons they manufacture are ones that they themselves cannot control, and that could destroy the earth if they are not careful. Therefore, I secretly destroyed these weapons."
"Ah, no wonder those weapons tests that everyone was talking about suddenly disappeared."
"So it was a human doing. So many countries joined forces to search but couldn't find the culprit. Haha, I see."
"Sir, didn't you say you wouldn't interfere in other countries' affairs? Aren't you breaking your promise by doing this?" a reporter from a British media company said angrily.
“I did say I wouldn’t interfere in the politics of any country.” The man frowned and said, “But that doesn’t mean I’ll just watch the Earth be destroyed. They don’t know how to use the technology I’ve given them. I had already signed a series of contracts and guarantees beforehand, but unfortunately I underestimated the politicians’ true colors. So in the end, to avoid unpredictable events, I personally destroyed all the weapons of mass destruction that appeared on Earth because of my technological power.”
Just then, a reporter from the Daily Bugle, well, Mr. Peter Parker, stood up and asked a question: "Mr. Man, what was that thing you mentioned earlier?"
This was also because Peter Parker saw that the reporters' questions were increasing and were somewhat deviating from the topic of the press conference, so he immediately got up and shifted the focus back to the original issue.
"Well, okay, what I'm about to say is that, in order to ensure that Earth is not harmed or enslaved in future alien invasions, Professor X, the leader of the mutants, Captain America from the newly formed superhero team Avengers, and I, after discussions with representatives and leaders from various countries of the United Nations, are preparing to establish the 'Earth Energy Human Management Association'," the man announced in a deep voice, revealing a major agreement reached after several days of urgent contact with Captain America, Professor X, and leaders from various countries.
"Earth Energy Human Management Association?"
"What's going on? Is it similar to the previous mutant registration act?"
"Or is this a distorted version of the Mutant Registration Act?"
Upon hearing what the person was saying, the reporters immediately raised their voices to inquire about this new organization, the Human Management Association.
Upon seeing this, the person waved his hand to quiet everyone down and said, "This is not the Mutant Registration Act. It is a non-profit organization that Professor X and I have been discussing for a long time and are preparing to establish. Moreover, it is a large, stateless organization. We will conduct the registration of superheroes and the establishment of their ranks in the newly built association building a week after the press conference."
"Huh? A registered hero?" a reporter asked doubtfully. "This seems to be no different from the Mutant Registration Act."
"No, this time we're only recording the codenames and main areas of operation of the Class-A heroes, and then classifying and ranking them according to their abilities, instead of like now where all the Class-A heroes rush out at the drop of a hat whenever something happens, causing destruction to the city because of their overwhelming strength," the person explained. "For example, we'll divide the Class-A heroes into levels from E to S based on their strength. Class-A heroes won't be involved in ordinary tasks like chasing thieves; they'll only be deployed by the association's AI system when the police need support, depending on the severity of the situation."
"Ah, similar to the settings of those online games?" a reporter exclaimed in surprise.
“That’s right, my inspiration comes from these online games, and this way there won’t be any waste of manpower or making a mountain out of a molehill.” The man continued, “In addition, I will personally establish a foundation, and all the damage and losses caused by the battles between super heroes and super villains will be paid from this foundation. Of course, the super heroes registered in the association will also receive a corresponding salary every month.”
"Huh? You can get paid?" Peter Parker had only just heard about this and muttered, "That doesn't seem so bad."
After all, he was just a nobody. Although he had abilities, he had a good mindset and a strong sense of pride. He was unwilling to accept help from anyone, including Adam. Otherwise, he wouldn't have given up a good job at Dawn Group, Stark Industries, Osborn Corporation, or other good places, and instead went to work for a newspaper and made a living by taking selfies.
Of course, Peter Parker saw this as a form of self-training during his growth process. After all, he was still a college student, and working at a newspaper was actually a good fit for him.
At this point, the man had finished introducing some things about Ashma and began to talk about another matter, which was an important matter concerning mutants.
"Furthermore, as you all know from the video just now, a large group of the heroes protecting Earth are mutants from the Xavier's School. I know that there are still many people on Earth who fear, resent, and even hate mutants, but as you just saw, they are also members of Earth and are contributing their own strength to the well-being of our planet." The man glanced at the reactions of the people below and continued, "Therefore, I appeal to all of humanity to stop persecuting mutants. Please don't hate them. You can discriminate against them—that's something we can't change—but don't persecute them because of discrimination."
"I know that people do this for the Earth, to make everyone more harmonious, but have you ever thought about this?" A reporter stood up and said, "Most mutants unintentionally unleash terrifying power when they first awaken. This unintentional power often harms some innocent humans, and hatred is born from this!"
"Professor X and I already have a solution for this!" the man said with a smile. "It's the soon-to-be-established Academy of Human Abilities. This will be the best place for all humans with abilities to learn how to control them. We will announce this at a future press conference. Well, I have some things to take care of now, so I'll leave for a bit!"
Chapter 310 Superhuman Management Association
"Well, in general, your press conference today told everyone a fact, and then threw 21 questions at them, is that all?" On the top floor of Stark Tower, Tony sat on the sofa, holding a glass of wine, looking at Adam who had just flown in from outside, and asked with his head tilted.
“Yes, you’re right, that’s exactly it.” Adam shrugged, then looked at Captain America and said, “Didn’t you mention any of this to him before?”
“I’ve already said it, but he doesn’t seem to believe it much. Well, I mean, the fact that he belongs to the Avengers, not the Justice League,” Captain America said with a smile.
“Oh, really? I always thought you weren’t too keen on working with me?” Adam said, looking at Tony.
“That’s right, I was indeed a little reluctant to work with you, otherwise I wouldn’t have gotten involved when S.H.I.E.L.D. was trying to build a superhero team.” Tony downed his drink in one gulp, grinned, and said, “But I still didn’t expect to be kicked out of the Justice League like this.”
"Did your pride get hurt?" Hawkeye asked with a smile.
“Ah, that’s right, that’s exactly it.” Tony didn’t argue, nodded and said, “I’ve already thought of countless excuses in my mind to get you to agree to let me leave the Justice League.”
"Oh, sorry, how about we start over?" Adam asked with a smile.
"Hmm, let me think... if you used light to circle the Earth a few times, maybe you could turn back time." Quicksilver chuckled and said, "Of course, besides you, no one else would know any of this. Want to give it a try?"
“Uh, I think I’d better not.” Tony waved his hand and said, “I don’t want to be abandoned twice.”
