Chapter 239 An Endless Nightmare
Temple of the Sun
Athena looked at the data before her, searching for a way to awaken Adam. But this was no simple matter; it was an extremely difficult one. After all, Athena and the others had no idea why Adam had fallen into a coma. The only thing they knew was that Adam hadn't fallen into a coma because of Dr. Otto's experiment. They could only try various relatively safe methods to wake Adam up.
Christine, panting, lowered her hand and shook her head, saying, "No, there's no way to enter Adam's consciousness. Although Adam has very low resistance to magic, for some reason his ability to protect his consciousness is extremely strong. Even if I used divine power, I couldn't break through this defense and enter his consciousness unless I wanted to turn Adam into an idiot."
Athena, without looking up, said, "I understand. It seems we've failed again this time. Oh, by the way, Tony contacted me earlier to ask about Adam's situation. It seems there are some problems outside, so it looks like you'll need to go out for a bit."
Christine frowned and said, "These people are really restless. What's happened now?"
Athena replied, "I just checked some abnormal data regarding the trading of tritium. It seems those people are getting restless. Oh, Spider-Man sent a distress signal, and it's even using magical communication."
Christine immediately came over and asked, "What happened? Why did you make him use magical communication?"
Athena pulled up Spider-Man's distress message, and after reading it, her expression grew colder and colder. She said, "Hmph, they've actually started to act, and so blatantly at that, intercepting Spider-Man to try and use Dr. Otto to restart the experiment. They're really trying to bully us."
Christine said coldly, "In that case, I'll go out and let them come to their senses. Otherwise, they'll really think we're easy to bully."
Athena nodded and said, "It seems you'll need to handle a lot of things outside for now. Dawn Company also seems to be having some problems. You'll stay outside and deal with these matters for the time being. I'll notify you immediately if the master wakes up."
Christine said, "Okay, I'll show those guys that the Justice League isn't something they can just mess with like they want without Superman." After saying that, she asked Athena for Spider-Man's location and then disappeared with a teleportation spell.
Athena sighed and walked to Adam's side, whispering, "Master, please wake up. Christine hasn't had a proper rest in so long, and we all miss you. Of course, if you don't wake up, I will have the whole world with you. I won't let you be alone in another world." As she spoke, a strange dark red light suddenly flashed around Athena, but it was quickly extinguished by the power of the sun god in the temple, so Athena didn't notice anything unusual about herself.
=======World of Consciousness===================
So, let's see what kind of situation Mr. Superman, who is of so much concern to so many people, is going through.
On that day, after seeing Dr. Otto successfully fix the energy of the artificial sun, he was overjoyed. After all, he knew very well what such completely unpolluted energy meant. Unfortunately, before he could even rejoice, Adam suddenly felt a strange fluctuation strike his body, and then he lost consciousness.
When he woke up again, he sensed something was wrong. He felt completely weak. That was his first feeling, and what happened next clearly told him that he was no longer in his original world. Because he saw people who shouldn't be there.
"Barry?!" He hesitated for a moment before calling out the name of the person in front of him, and asked, "Where is this place? How did you get here?"
The man Adam called Barry was a handsome man with a charming smile.
He put down the newspaper in his hand and said, "Clark, you're awake? Thank God, you have no idea how worried we were. We told you not to go alone. Thank goodness you're alright."
Adam was completely bewildered, shook his head, and asked, "Where is this place?"
Barry stood up and said very gently, "This is the watchtower. Chloe has been rescued, so don't worry."
Hearing these names that were both very familiar and very unfamiliar, Adam was completely confused. He also clearly felt that he was forgetting something very important, but he couldn't remember it. This feeling caused him great pain.
Seeing Adam's condition, Barry patted him on the shoulder and said, "Sorry, brother, by the time we got there you were already unconscious. But you defeated 'Doomsday' too. You not only rescued Chloe, but you also saved the entire Earth."
Adam asked with a hint of doubt, "I saved the Earth?"
Barry nodded and said, "That's right, you saved the world, and because of your efforts, the Justice League has finally been accepted by all the citizens. John and Oliver are handling these matters. Bruce, you know he doesn't like crowds, so he went back first when he saw you were alright. Oh, by the way, I've already asked for leave for you at the newspaper. Louis said he'll come back to see you at noon."
Adam was stunned. Louis should have been a name he would never forget, but now he felt nothing for him. It was as if Louis was a familiar stranger. Two blurry figures appeared in his mind, and he tried to see them more clearly, but the piercing pain pulled him back.
"I want to be alone for a while." Despite his headache, Adam gave Barry an awkward smile and said what he meant.
Barry waved his hand and said, "Alright, I know the pain of losing power, but John said it's not permanent. Your body is fine, and it should take a few months to recover, so don't worry. Well, I'm going back now. Don't think too much, get some rest. We'll protect the city these next few days." With that, Barry smiled and left.
After Barry left, Adam struggled to sit up, reached for the newspaper Barry had left behind, and slumped back onto the bed after reading the news. He saw the date on the newspaper: June 1, 2025. He was certain he was no longer in his original world, but he had also forgotten what that 'original world' actually was.
A month passed, and he slowly accepted the name Clark Kent and the absurd fact that he had several girlfriends, but he still couldn't feel at ease. He always felt that he had forgotten something important, but he couldn't remember it.
Every time he was asleep, someone would call out the name 'Adam Stark', someone would express their longing, but there was a hazy feeling that made him unable to recall the specifics. The more he thought about it, the more his head ached, making him want to destroy everything.
Finally, one day, because of a small matter, Adam finally snapped—he killed someone. He killed the most dangerous and cunning clown, and then conquered the world with an iron fist, executing all those who did not obey his orders under various pretexts.
Then, the rebels appeared. A figure that was very blurry, a figure that he knew very well, suddenly appeared and killed Adam, who had gathered all the Justice League superheroes who were rebelling against Adam and was going to become a god on earth.
"Ahhh!!!" Adam exclaimed in surprise, waking up to find himself lying on a bed that felt both strange and familiar. Beside him sat a blond man in casual clothes, quietly reading a newspaper.
"Barry?!?" Adam exclaimed in surprise, asking, "How did you get here? Where is this place?"
Upon hearing this, Barry closed the newspaper he was holding and set it aside, then stood up with some surprise. He said, "Hey, Clark, you're awake? That's great."
Time passed slowly, and Adam transformed once again into a god filled with darkness within. He conquered the world with ruthless methods, creating a world free of crime, because committing a crime meant losing one's value and facing execution.
Some members of the Justice League, represented by Batman, stepped forward to resist Adam's ruthless methods. Unfortunately, due to the overwhelming disparity in strength, apart from Batman, the rest either died or were captured and turned into puppets controlled by Adam.
Finally, a person appeared, someone Adam felt very familiar with, and banished him from his position as a god among men, imprisoning him in a spaceship and exiling him. After a period of aimless drifting, the spaceship crashed into a star, and Adam inside the spaceship was reduced to ashes.
"Ah~~~ Huff huff huff~~~" Adam woke up again in the medical room of the watchtower amidst a series of rapid breaths, and Barry, whose neck he had broken with his own hands last time, was taking care of him.
'Damn it~~~~~ What on earth is going on? What's wrong with me? Where am I? Athena, huh?! Who is Athena?' Hearing Barry's familiar voice, Adam sat on the bed, lost in thought, his face expressionless.
=======Real World==========================
This is the current state of Adam's consciousness. Unless something unexpected happens or someone intervenes to awaken Adam, he will remain immersed in an endless nightmare.
Of course, neither Athena nor Christine knew about any of this. Moreover, since it was an activity deep within her consciousness, Athena was unable to detect it with current technology, so she could only keep trying various methods.
Meanwhile, Christine appeared instantly in the bank where Spider-Man was after leaving the Temple of the Sun, just in time to see Spider-Man binding someone with his webs. The entire bank was a mess, riddled with deep sniper shell craters and several craters that looked like they were from grenade explosions, showing just how much of an attack Spider-Man had suffered.
Spider-Man, upon seeing Christine appear, breathed a sigh of relief and slumped to the ground, saying, "Ah, reinforcements have finally arrived. These people are insane; they almost brought out heavy weapons to attack."
Christine waved her right hand, and a green beam of light flew from her hand and landed on Spider-Man. The magical energy began to heal Spider-Man's injured areas.
"Sorry, your SOS arrived a bit late because we're in a secret location, and I also spotted the besieged vanguard on the way. But don't worry, I'll make those guys pay for offending the Justice League!" Christine said coldly.
Chapter 240 The Advancing Mechanical Force
Spider-Man exhaled a breath of stale air and said, "The enemy has heavy firepower, we must take them. There are also a few ability users who will launch surprise attacks from time to time."
Christine said coldly, "Don't worry, I'll make sure they never come back! I'll send you away first. Although your external injuries have healed, you still need to rest for a few days."
Christine knew that in recent days, because of Adam's coma, New York City seemed to have become the enemy of criminals, with many criminal activities occurring. These were all solved by Spider-Man and Vanguard working together, so Christine decided to let Spider-Man go back to rest.
Spider-Man hesitated for a moment after hearing this, then finally nodded and said, "Okay, send me away."
This is because he knows that Christine is very strong, second only to Adam in the current Justice League. He thinks that if he stays, he might not be of any help and might even get in the way. In addition, he can prevent anyone from taking this opportunity to commit crimes elsewhere.
Christine nodded and said, "Okay, you should get some rest." After saying a few words, a golden light flashed and disappeared, and Spider-Man vanished as well.
Just then, Christine heard a series of very orderly footsteps and hushed conversations.
"Boss, Spider-Man must be exhausted. Are we really going to go and capture him?" asked a young man who seemed to be a recent addition to the team.
“Shut up. Our country doesn’t need these aliens to protect us. Spider-Man has already refused to cooperate with us, which has caused many people to be injured and unconscious. We are mortal enemies with Spider-Man. Arrest him immediately if you see him. If he resists, the director said: ‘Kill him without mercy!’” the middle-aged man, who seemed to be the leader, said in a deep voice.
“That’s right, and he was just injured by the divine arrow. Although the arrow failed to catch him in the end, isn’t that better?” A slightly flippant voice followed up with this statement.
“That’s right. If we manage to capture Spider-Man, then we’ll have our bonus for this year, and you can finally get your mother to move out of Queens.” The team leader used the promise of financial reward to energize his team members.
Upon hearing this, Christine sneered and whispered, "Hmph, capturing Spider-Man? Alas, poor cannon fodder. Used as bait and still failed to capture him. Truly blinded by greed. Well then, I'll see how you plan to capture Spider-Man." She then waited quietly.
Soon, the footsteps grew closer. This wasn't because the team was incompetent, but because Christine was too powerful; she knew everything about their every move.
A group of a dozen fully armed soldiers, wielding energy weapons, cautiously entered the bank, then froze. Christine stood silently in the bank lobby, staring at them with her bright eyes.
"The Sun Goddess!!!" someone in the group exclaimed Christine's code name with some fear.
Everyone gripped their weapons tightly, as if these weapons could give them courage and a sense of security.
"What are you doing here?" Christine asked casually.
The leader of the assault team sighed and said, "Madam, please leave here and do not interfere with our mission."
“On a mission?” Christine sneered. “What mission? I haven’t seen any dangerous people here.”
"Boss. We haven't found Spider-Man!" At that moment, a few soldiers walked out of the bank and shouted before even reaching the lobby. Then, upon seeing Christine, they froze and stood there motionless.
"Spider-Man? Hmph, Spider-Man is a dangerous person?" Christine sneered. "What mistake did Spider-Man make that warrants you so-called champions of justice arresting him?"
"You!!!" The team leader gritted his teeth and said, "In short, capturing Spider-Man is an order from above. We don't care what bad things he did or what he didn't do; our mission is to obey orders."
"What a fine bunch of soldiers," Christine said, ignoring the subtle movements of the soldiers behind her. "But unfortunately, Spider-Man has already been taken care of. Sorry to disappoint you, it seems your bonus is gone."
Just then, the commando captain finally heard his chief's voice through his earpiece—a cold and unquestionable voice: "Shoot him immediately!"
Christine's lips curled slightly as she whispered, "So, your reinforcements have finally arrived." Suddenly, she unleashed a blinding golden light, blasting away the assault team soldiers who were preparing to attack.
Christine strolled leisurely up to the assault team captain, looked at him who was still struggling to get up, and said, "Hmph, although I didn't use offensive magic just now, it should still be enough to knock an ordinary human unconscious. It seems you have some secrets of your own. But unfortunately, I'm not interested in your secrets, so go see Uncle Hades."
After Christine finished speaking, she casually waved her hand, unleashing a golden light that pierced the head of the assault team captain. Then, without looking back, she walked out of the bank, leaving behind only the mechanical brain, sparking from the pierced head, standing alone in place. It turned out that the captain was actually a robot.
Christine walked out of the bank calmly, looked at the now completely quiet street, and said, "Alright, you'd better hurry up and make your move. Although your appearance is very realistic, it still can't hide the fact that you are just robots. You are soulless shells, and no matter how you pretend, you can't disguise yourself as humans."
A round of applause rang out, and a middle-aged man stepped forward. He smiled and said, "This must be the Sun Goddess, right? So you're the sorceress who's been helping Adam Stark. We only wanted to capture Vanguard and Spider-Man, but you messed things up. But that's precisely why we were able to capture you. You can only blame yourself for refusing S.H.I.E.L.D. and joining the Justice League."
Christine glanced calmly at the robots that kept appearing around her and said, "You think you can take me by the nose?"
The middle-aged man sneered, "Without full preparation, do you think we're here to make a fool of ourselves?"
“Then come on!” A golden light flashed around Christine, and the armor her father had given her appeared on her body. Her longsword was pointed directly at the middle-aged man, and she said, “Let me see what you’ve prepared! One last thing, your imitation of that cold laugh is really bad; it’s disgusting.” With that, she swung her sword and cleaved one of the robots that had ambushed her in two.
Christine's attack officially started the war, because she already knew that the area within a few hundred meters was covered by these people with protective shields and there were no civilians around. Therefore, she attacked without mercy, venting the pressure and anger she had been feeling for the past few days.
In a certain area above New York, aboard a S.H.I.E.L.D. helicarrier, Nick Fury, now reinstated as director, silently watched Christine's battle through a screen in front of him. It could be said that this battle was a one-sided massacre by Christine.
Nick Fury's face remained expressionless as he turned and asked, "How's the data analysis going?"
A staff member immediately replied, "Director, the data from the Sun Goddess fluctuates greatly. All we can do now is collect this data; we cannot analyze it yet."
Nick Fury didn't say anything after hearing this, and continued to stare at the screen. When he saw that even a hundred mechanical soldiers couldn't get Christine into trouble, his unchanging expression finally changed.
"Begin the second round of testing, deploying magic robots and also bringing in E4 units."
“Yes, Director!” the liaison agent responded immediately, and then sent out Nick Fury’s orders.
Nick Fury stared sternly at Christine, who had already turned over 100 robots into a pile of scrap metal, and thought to himself, 'Do you want to become the next Superman? No, I won't give you that chance. Absolutely not! The safety of Earth cannot be entrusted to you outcasts!'
Chapter 241 The Battle Continues
E4, Nick Fury's biggest acquisition from his trip to South Africa, is a super-team of 10 people. It includes mutants, individuals with extraordinary superpowers, and South African-specific black wizards and sorcerers. Why would they work for S.H.I.E.L.D.? Simply put, S.H.I.E.L.D. controls 40% of the world's supernatural resources, and no one can ignore this temptation.
Because he had the E4 force, Nick Fury was able to wrest power back from Maria Hill as soon as he returned and planned a series of actions against Adam Stark. Now that an opportunity had presented itself, it would be a disservice to Nick Fury's character not to seize it.
