Wasteland Lord: Starting from Thirty Days to Live
Chapter 19 The Death of William
One of the rotting dogs couldn't contain itself any longer and rushed towards Lucas and William.
This was like a signal, and all the monsters instantly launched an attack.
"We've stirred up a hornet's nest! Quick, quick, retreat! Don't linger!" Lucas shouted.
The two men killed one of the Night Howling Moths that charged down with a single sword strike, then ran back onto the wooden bridge without looking back.
Behind them, seven or eight rotting dogs relentlessly pursued them. As soon as they stepped onto the wooden bridge, it creaked and groaned under their weight.
Meanwhile, the soldiers on the other side were already prepared; once the two men crossed the wooden bridge, they would cut it down.
But before that, they couldn't do anything more.
Everyone was cheering them on in their hearts.
Run faster! Run even faster!
Edmund had already arrived at the scene. He was watching from the side and quietly talking to the soldiers next to him.
Give me your bow.
Shortly after he uttered those words, a night-howling moth bat swooped down from the sky and headed straight for Lucas.
Finished!
Just as everyone held their breath, a sharp arrow shot from the other end of the bridge, striking the swooping night-howling moth bat squarely in the head.
Lucas didn't even realize what was happening until he heard something fall heavily behind him, at which point he realized that Amon had saved his life.
At this moment, the other side was already within reach. The two of them only needed to run two more steps to cut the bridge lock!
However, something in the sky suddenly launched an attack.
A white spiderweb suddenly shot out from a corner unseen by anyone, striking William's foot, who was slightly behind by half a step.
William's feet were instantly glued to the spot, unable to move.
It's the web of a gliding web-entangled spider!
"Damn it!"
Lucas cursed loudly and immediately turned back to help pull his leg out.
However, the spider web was very tight, and no matter how hard they tried, they could not break free.
Meanwhile, the monsters on the other side had all crowded onto the wooden bridge like a tide.
As the monsters drew ever closer to them, Lucas could only curse under his breath and grab his shield and sword to stand between the monsters and William.
"Take off your shoes, take off your shoes now!" Lucas said with his back to William.
Meanwhile, the crowd on the other side of the bridge was in an uproar.
"Lord Tieyan, shall we go up and help?"
Some impatient soldiers couldn't stand it any longer and picked up their spears to rush onto the bridge!
However, Edmund remained surprisingly calm and stopped them.
"Now those of you who have bows, shoot arrows; those who don't, use stones. Help them as much as you can, but you are absolutely not allowed to step onto the bridge."
"Wait a little longer. If they can't return in time, and the monsters are already upon us, cut the bridge cables!"
Edmund's face was ashen, as cold as stone, and his commands were equally icy.
Everyone wore expressions of disbelief, but they had no choice but to obey Edmund's orders.
So they had no choice but to shoot arrows as much as possible, which greatly relieved Lucas's stress.
However, it didn't help much, because as more and more monsters rushed onto the bridge, the bridge was already becoming overburdened.
They had just cut some of the bridge cables to set up a trap, and the bridge itself was already in a precarious state.
If they don't get on the bridge soon, even if no one cuts the ropes, the wooden bridge will fall into the canyon due to the weight of the monsters.
Meanwhile, William was frantically trying to take off his shoes, but the more he rushed, the more chaotic it became. When he finally managed to get the shoes off, he was devastated to find that parts of his calves were also entangled in spider webs.
William looked at Lucas, who was shouting and struggling to stay upright in front of him, and then at the people behind him who were shouting "Come back quickly" and firing arrows.
He suddenly seemed to have made up his mind.
"Lucas, you go ahead, I'll cover your retreat."
Lucas hesitated for a moment upon hearing William's words.
"What nonsense are you talking about? We'll go together."
"If we all leave together, none of us will be able to leave. If you leave now, one of us can still go."
"But I can't..."
"Enough with the nonsense!" William rudely interrupted him. "Do you remember what Lord Edmund taught us? The worst thing a warrior can do is hesitate!"
"This is the first task Lord Edmund has given us. Do you want to fail and embarrass yourself in front of everyone?"
These words provoked Lucas, who swung his sword forcefully, forcing back the monster that charged at him again, and then slowly retreated to William's side.
"You want to be a hero? I'll grant your wish!"
Lucas uttered those words harshly, then turned and walked towards the other side of the bridge without looking back.
However, as he ran, William's voice came from behind him.
"Giant windmills, golden waves of wheat. For this belief, we attacked the invincible, sacrificing ourselves when necessary to complete the mission. Remember, Lucas?"
In an instant, Lucas's tears gushed out like a burst dam.
He ran while crying ugly and cursing.
"You bastard, you don't actually think you're that handsome, do you?!"
The wooden bridge was already teetering on the brink of collapse just a second before Lucas reached the other side. Then came a deafening, teeth-grinding thud, followed by a deafening crash as it plummeted to the ground.
Lucas didn't dare look back, he just rushed towards Edmund.
Edmund pulled her into his arms.
"William... William, he..."
"I understand. You don't need to say anything more. You can rest now, child."
As the wooden bridge crashed down, at least twenty monsters plummeted from mid-air, crashing violently to the bottom of the canyon, struggling and groaning before falling motionless.
With the wooden bridge collapsing, the only shortcut from the foot of the mountain to the castle also disappeared.
If the monsters want to attack the castle, they will have to take a detour of at least half an hour.
However, low-level monsters are not intelligent or know how to be cunning.
They were drooling as they watched the fresh flesh and blood right in front of them.
The blood moon emitted a dark red light above their heads, which stimulated their minds and aroused their bloodlust.
So they chose the dumbest, but also the fastest, method.
They must charge forward.
What canyon? What flat land? What trap?
Their rotting minds had lost all concept; they only knew that an impulse was driving them—forward! Forward! Kill everything that could move!
A rotting dog howled at the blood moon, then, like a madman, leaped across the canyon.
But the canyon was too wide for him to reach by jumping, so like his twenty-odd predecessors, he crashed heavily to the bottom of the canyon.
But he didn't care, and neither did the other monsters around him. They continued to charge and leap. Monsters kept falling to the bottom.
Even if a few lucky monsters manage to leap across the canyon, they will be surrounded and killed.
Everyone watched this shocking scene unfold before them. Although these magical beasts posed no immediate threat, their insane actions were enough to leave them in awe.
If the monsters of ordinary times still retain some of the cunning of wild beasts, then the monsters under the blood moon are pure madness.
As more and more monsters rushed into the canyon and their corpses fell, the once shallow canyon became increasingly cramped.
The canyon wasn't deep to begin with, and if they continued their reckless assault, they would eventually fill it with a path—a path made of corpses!
