Wasteland Lord: Starting from Thirty Days to Live
Chapter 18 Introduces a Trap
How can one describe Warcraft?
They are the claws of the fissure, the source of infected flesh and blood.
A moment ago.
Lucas and William stood on the outside of the wooden bridge. They had already loosened the ropes, and everything was ready. They were just waiting quietly for the monster to arrive.
Lucas looked back and saw a group of guards watching them from the other side of the bridge, which eased his tension slightly.
But Lucas still felt his mouth was dry and his heart was pounding.
To ease the awkwardness, he had to strike up a conversation with William, who was standing next to him.
"Hey, have you ever seen a Warcraft? I'm not the ordinary kind, I mean the real, huge ones?"
William stared intently into the depths of the forest, clearly tense as well.
It was impossible not to be nervous. Although the two young men had made boastful promises to Edmund, they were, after all, just two young men.
William answered Lucas's question somewhat absentmindedly.
"Hey everyone, what size are you talking about? Do you mean the one in Taotu Village down the mountain?"
Lucas shook his head.
"I'm not talking about those level two guys. I'm talking about the main beast."
"The main beast?"
William licked his lips when he heard the word.
Everyone in this world knows that rifts and monsters are inextricably linked—where there are rifts, there are monsters. And where there are monsters, there might be rifts nearby.
However, the two are also interdependent, meaning that if the monsters emerging from the rift are killed, the rift will close.
Generally speaking, the more powerful the rift, the more powerful the monsters that can be born from it.
A typical level one rift can only spawn level one monsters like the Rotten Dog.
These fissures are generally unstable, like something that appears out of thin air, about three meters long, a dimensional portal the size of a door panel.
People call it a sore—because this fissure is like a wound in the world that appears out of thin air.
These sores are usually mobile and may even shift, and they only last for a very short time, usually disappearing on their own after two to three days.
However, a small percentage of sores evolve into secondary fissures, which are called vents.
A throbbing wound poses a much greater threat than a sore.
Level 2 rifts can spawn level 2 monsters.
These cracks can persist for months or even years, and without human intervention, they may even remain for a long time.
If the Level 2 "Source" is not interfered with, it may evolve into the Level 3 "Scar".
Of course, the formation of fissures does not always follow the principles of evolution. Sometimes, advanced fissures appear out of thin air, such as level two or three fissures.
It's as if an evil demon is manipulating the world from behind the scenes, doing whatever it pleases. Wherever it points, cracks appear, bringing death to people.
In short, scars are often associated with level three magical beasts, which are known as master beasts.
These scar-like fissures are often capable of destroying an area, and it would take at least a small legion to reclaim it.
The way to reclaim it is to kill the main beast.
The main reason for the current tragic state of the Reach, as passed down by word of mouth among the Reach survivors, is the appearance of a third-order fissure in a valley called Silent Valley on the northern bank of the river.
Once a Level 3 Rift – "Scar" – appears, it will never close automatically unless its master beast is killed.
William was somewhat puzzled.
"Why are you bringing this up at a time like this? Master Beast? You're not trying to say you've seen one of those huge creatures before, are you?"
Lucas gave a wry smile.
"How could that be? If I had seen something like that, would I still be alive?"
"The biggest thing I've ever seen, a level 2 magical beast, was that guy—a centipede the size of a house—that destroyed my hometown."
"Windmill Village. I'll always remember that name. I'll always remember that huge windmill that turned every day."
"Sometimes when I stand on the mountaintop and look down, I can see the windmill on the other side of the river. That windmill is really big."
William remained silent.
He had seen windmills before, but those weren't the windmills in his village.
His village is surrounded by fields of golden wheat, not far from the windmill village.
His village was destroyed in another monster attack, during which his parents risked their lives to shield him, allowing him to escape. He was later rescued by Edmund, who happened to be passing by.
"Those wheat fields, those windmills—don't you think we'll never be able to take them back unless we drive these monsters away?"
"That's exactly what I mean. This is what Lord Edmund meant by launching an attack on the invincible, for that one belief."
"Um."
William and Lucas fell silent.
They awaited the arrival of the monsters.
With a wolf howl, countless eerie yellow eyes, rotting flesh, and ferocious monsters emerged from the darkness.
Although Lucas was still trembling a little, he was no longer as panicked as before.
Both of them were carrying short swords and shields.
To attract the monster's attention, they both banged their shields with their short swords, making a loud noise.
Sure enough, all the magical beasts were attracted by them and turned all their attention to them.
"Yes, that's it, you big oafs, come and hit me! Attack me this way!"
William glanced around and saw many familiar magical beasts.
"Rotten dogs, gliding web-entangled spiders, night-howling moth bats—quite a few familiar faces."
The rotting dog was the same kind that Vittorio had encountered at Raven Pass.
The web-entangled spider, originally a tree-dwelling spider that inhabits forests, has swelled several times its original size after being contaminated by the rift, transforming into a monster about the size of a small dog.
Its distinctive feature is that it can launch sticky spider webs.
Furthermore, it is unknown whether this monster was twisted by the rift, as its body was fused with that of a woodland flying squirrel. This spider also has a membrane between its legs, which can form a simple glider, allowing it to move quickly through the complex woodland environment in conjunction with its spider silk.
These spiders are not deadly, but they are terrified of fire, and there are many of them. Their webs can hinder movement, making them a very troublesome monster.
The Night Howling Moth Bat is a strange, monstrous creature that is a hybrid of a large moth and a bat.
These monsters are not deadly either. However, because they can fly, they always swoop down from the air.
They knocked over lanterns, extinguished fires, and even knocked weapons away when no one was looking.
The most disgusting thing about this monster is that it can emit a sound wave that causes humans to have splitting headaches and causes a lot of interference in battle.
Therefore, moth bats are not fatal when they appear alone; what they fear most is when they attack in coordination with other moth bats like this.
Besides these, there were also seventeen or eighteen other monsters whose names I didn't know.
Most of them are level one monsters. Although a level one monster can be dealt with by a fully armed soldier, it is not considered powerful.
But when the mountains and fields are teeming with these monsters, the situation is a different story.
In short, when Lucas and William made a huge noise, all the monsters turned their attention to them.
As the two men faced those empty, bloodthirsty gazes, cold sweat beaded on their brows as they slowly retreated.
"Come on, let's lure them into the trap we've set," Lucas said softly.
