Marvel: I am Iron Man
Chapter 72 Find a Spy
"No," Saul said.
Tony raised an eyebrow: "No way?"
"No, it's not that it's impossible, it's just..." Thor scratched his head, looking like an embarrassed lion. "Alright. Heimdall is my brother, and it's fine to ask him for help occasionally. But he's also the guardian of Asgard, and it's his duty to monitor the Nine Realms. I can't always go to him for trivial matters in Midgard..."
In the original comics, Thor never mentioned going to Heimdall whenever he or the Avengers encountered an opponent they couldn't find. If they did that, all the terrorist organizations and supervillains on Earth would have been wiped out long ago... Well, actually, Tony always thought it was just something the writers hadn't considered.
Tony persisted: "My life was threatened. She's a public threat. I think this is serious and not a trivial matter."
"Okay, you said the person you're looking for is called 'Viper'," Thor asked. "Do you know what she looks like?"
Tony: "Never seen it before."
"That would be even more troublesome. Besides, even if I asked, it would be useless if he didn't recognize people. Heimdall is omniscient, not omnipotent. He can't possibly recognize everyone, especially the mortals of Midgard."
Thor paused as he spoke, then looked a little embarrassed.
"And another thing is... I can't go to Heimdall to ask him any questions right now," Thor said.
Tony looked at him with a puzzled expression, then understood from his awkward look.
By the way, Thor is still a criminal. Strictly speaking, he can't even return to Asgard.
The banishment of Thor was Odin's last decree before he fell into slumber. Now that Odin is still asleep, no one has the authority to rescind this order. Thor's return to Asgard was due to an emergency; he prevented Loki from usurping power, murdering his brother, and attempting to use the Bifrost to carry out genocide against Jotunheim.
Now that the emergency has passed, he certainly can't just go back.
"Alright, I'll do it my way then."
Tony swipes open the floating projection screen and quickly glances at the situation Jarvis reports.
The information wasn't much; it was just something Senator Sent mentioned to his driver in his car, saying that their base would be in contact with Viper recently.
However, once Sent entered the Hydra base, it became much harder to gather intelligence through conventional wiretapping alone.
"I suggest we infiltrate the Hydra base to gather more intelligence," Jarvis proposed, "preferably with Senator Sent in tow."
Tony said, half-jokingly, "So, do you think you can do it, Ja?"
"I'm sorry, sir, all Hydra outposts are isolated from the external network. It's impossible for me to breach them from the outside," Jarvis replied earnestly. "If there were an interface to the base server, perhaps I could try."
"We need someone inside that base, near Sent... We need a spy," Tony said.
Thor, listening intently, exclaimed, "Is there an enemy trying to cause you trouble? Your problems are my problems! Tell me where that evil serpent's stronghold is, and I'll let them experience the power of God Thor!"
Tony turned around and gave Thor, who was grinning confidently, a once-over.
For some reason, whenever he saw Thor's smile, he couldn't help but think of the goofy and slightly smug smile Thor gave Hulk in the Grandmaster's Arena in "Thor: Ragnarok".
It seems that it was around that movie that Saul started flooring the gas pedal in his comedic persona, going on a downward spiral from which there was no turning back...
After imagining Thor, that burly, blond giant, playing the role of a spy infiltrator, Tony decided against it. He roughly estimated that the infiltration operation would probably turn into "Thor's Unrivaled" within three minutes.
It would be better to call Happy instead.
"Thanks, Thor, but I'm looking to gather intelligence, not take down the hideout. I'll definitely ask for your help if I need it," Tony said casually. "I have a lot of good wine here, and there's a private cinema and other entertainment options over there. Jarvis can introduce you if you're interested."
Jarvis's voice rang out: "This way, sir."
"Alright. Although I don't think there's anything interesting to do on Earth..." Thor stood up. "Just remember to call me if you need anything. I owe you a favor, Stark, I won't forget."
However, Thor did not expect that the slap in the face would come so quickly.
An hour later, he was already engrossed in an FPS game and quickly learned to play online against other players while drinking beer, yelling things like, "You're done for. I'm Thor, I'll come up through the internet and smash your head in..."
This involuntarily reminded Tony of Thor in Avengers: Endgame, a self-destructive, game- and alcohol-addicted couch potato...
However, Sol is currently in high spirits and not at all like that. He's just playing games; it shouldn't lead to him becoming like that.
Probably not.
Thor went to play games, while Tony continued dealing with the problem: "Alright, where were we, Ja?"
Jarvis: "We need a spy."
Tony: "Yeah, we need a spy. If only we knew someone skilled in disguise, agile, and efficient... Haha, don't we just happen to know one?"
Jarvis: "Are you talking about Agent Romanov, sir?"
"Yes. Unless we know other super agents who happen to owe us a huge favor." Tony leaned back on the sofa with his arms crossed. "Make a call for me, Jarvis."
Jarvis tried dialing the number. After a short wait, no one answered; instead, Natasha's pre-set voicemail message played: "Hello, this is Natalie. I'm currently unavailable. Please leave a message if needed, or send a text message if it's urgent..."
Natalie is the name Black Widow used when she infiltrated Stark Industries.
"Looks like she's not here," Jarvis said. "Should I text her?"
"Maybe she's on some top-secret mission. Let's text her then." Tony thought for a moment, "But wait, don't go into details in the text. Just say I'm inviting her to dinner, and we'll talk in person sometime."
Jarvis: "Okay, sent, sir."
Tony assumed Natasha was probably busy. However, to his surprise, a new chat message immediately popped up below the message.
Just one concise word: Good.
"Wow, did she reply to our message instantly?" Tony raised an eyebrow.
Jarvis: "Perhaps she's not on a top-secret mission... There's an emergency, sir. High energy detected..."
Tony: "What?"
Before he could ask any more questions, another loud bang was heard outside. A beam of incandescent light descended from the sky and crashed to the ground outside the window.
That seems to be... the Rainbow Bridge again!?
