Chapter 42 Whispers Under the Dinner Table

The elevator doors slowly closed, leaving only the faint sound of mechanical operation in the cramped space.

Jiang Yiting deliberately stared at the fluctuating floor numbers, as if they were some kind of precision instrument that required her full concentration.

Chen Bainian could clearly see her still slightly red ear tips and her profile as she tried to appear calm out of the corner of his eye.

He chuckled inwardly, finding Jiang Yiting more vibrant and interesting at this moment than ever before.

"Ahem." He coughed lightly, his tone casual, gently steer the conversation back on track: "Speaking of which, how did you and Xiao Yezi meet?"

Jiang Yiting seemed to quietly breathe a sigh of relief, her shoulders relaxed slightly, and her gaze finally shifted away from the constantly changing floor numbers.

"You mean Xiao Yezi?" Her tone became lighter, with a hint of storytelling. "It was when I was practicing skateboarding in the neighborhood."

As she spoke, she subconsciously waved the skateboard in her hand.

"The little guy was watching from the edge of the flower bed, his eyes wide open, just like when 'Big Brother' asks you for food." She chuckled softly.

"Later, she couldn't hold it in any longer and ran over to ask me, 'Sister, can your wheeled board fly?'"

"I laughed right then and there," Jiang Yiting said with a smile in her eyes. "I told her, 'You can't fly, but do you want to try?' As soon as I finished speaking, her grandma came out and saw us staring at each other."

She paused, her tone softening, "Grandma Lin is a really kind person. She said that Xiao Yezi had been secretly watching me for several days, but she didn't dare to come over and ask. Later, I would occasionally take her for a walk, and we gradually became familiar with each other."

"bite--"

The crisp sound of the elevator arriving rang out just as her voice trailed off.

The doors slowly opened, and she stepped out of the elevator first, turning around with her skateboard in hand: "So, Mr. Chen, why don't you try it too? I'll give you a ride around on my skateboard, you know?"

Her tone returned to its usual teasing, as if the subtle emotions she had just experienced in the enclosed space had been gracefully left behind in the elevator behind her.

"Take me on a skateboard?" Chen Bainian followed her out of the elevator and stood beside her, his gaze falling on the skateboard in her hand. "Teacher Jiang, is your passenger service safe? What if I fall flat on my face? When the studio opens in a few days, I'll have to go on crutches."

Before Jiang Yiting could answer, he changed the subject and looked at her: "However, I can imagine what it would be like for you to take care of Xiao Yezi."

He paused, as if he could picture the scene in his mind, and his voice softened: "He must have been exceptionally patient and exceptionally steady."

"As for trying out skateboarding..." Chen Bainian smiled, "Once you're sure that this 'uncle' level student won't fall apart easily, I might just risk my life to accompany you, as if I'm unlocking a new skill."

He took two steps forward, opened the glass door of the apartment building for her, and naturally stepped aside to indicate that she should go first.

"Right now... let's go try Grandma Lin's cooking first, that's more practical."

"Teacher Chen," Jiang Yiting said as she stepped out the door with her skateboard in her arms. The evening breeze gently lifted the stray hairs on her forehead and also dissipated some of the heat on her face.

She turned around, her eyes shining brightly in the darkening sky: "I'm very good at carrying people on my skateboard, safety is absolutely guaranteed, at most I'll just let you experience the thrill of speed."

She paused deliberately, then winked mischievously: "Even Xiao Yezi dares to sit here, Teacher Chen... you wouldn't dare, would you?"

Before he could reply, she had already turned and walked forward, her steps light and quick, her voice carrying a laugh on the breeze: "Let's go, let's go, dinner will get cold if we dawdle any longer."

In the early spring evening, the wind carries the fresh scent of plants just beginning to awaken.

They hadn't walked far when they arrived at Unit 6.

Xiao Yezi had been waiting at the entrance of the building, tiptoeing to look around. As soon as she saw them, she immediately rushed over like a happy little bird.

"Sister Jiang! Uncle Chen!" she called out in a clear voice, skillfully taking Jiang Yiting's hand with one hand, and without hesitation, tightly gripping one of Chen Bainian's fingers with her other little hand.

The little one's palms were warm, filled with complete trust and joy: "Grandma said dinner's all ready, we're just waiting for you! There's super—delicious food today!"

She seemed to become the little link connecting the two, and without a word, she excitedly took one of them by the hand and led them into the building: "Hurry up, hurry up, the elevator takes forever, let's take the stairs!"

As soon as I reached the second floor, the door to room 201 was wide open, and the aroma of food wafted out.

Hearing the "thump thump" of people coming upstairs and Yezi's cheerful shouts, Grandpa Ye greeted them at the door with a smile.

"Little Jiang is here! This must be Little Chen, right? Please come in, please come in!" The old man's voice was loud and full of enthusiasm.

Her gaze swept over the gift box Chen Bainian was carrying, and she said with a hint of reproach, "You two kids, why are you being so polite just for a casual meal? Don't bring anything next time! Come in, make yourself at home!"

The two were enveloped by this simple and warm hospitality as they entered the room.

Grandma Lin came out of the kitchen, carrying a steaming clay pot, and placed it steadily in the center of the dining table.

"Xiao Jiang, Xiao Chen, you've come at the perfect time!" Grandma Lin greeted them with a smile as she wiped her hands on her apron. "Please sit down, please sit down. Dinner will be served soon."

Little Yezi pulled the two of them towards the dining table, arranging the seats like a little adult: "Sister Jiang, sit here. Uncle Chen, you sit next to Sister Jiang!"

When the two sat down as instructed, they were seated side by side.

After everyone was seated and before they started eating, Grandma Lin looked at the two people sitting next to her, and then at Xiao Yezi, who was holding her rice bowl and staring at the sweet and sour pork ribs with bright eyes.

I couldn't help but sigh, "With you two always playing with Xiao Yezi, she's been especially happy lately. All she talks about when she gets home are her older brothers and sisters."

My husband and I have been much less worried; we should have invited you over for a meal a long time ago.

Hearing this, under the table, Chen Bainian's knee inadvertently and gently touched Jiang Yiting's leg to the side.

He chuckled inwardly, realizing that he hadn't actually lived here for very long and had spent far less time with Xiao Yezi than with Jiang Yiting.

The credit for Grandma Lin's words should largely go to "Sister Jiang" standing next to her.

Almost simultaneously, he felt his side be gently touched twice.

He turned his head slightly, just in time to meet Jiang Yiting's gaze.

Her gaze swept over him quickly, her eyebrows slightly raised, and the corners of her mouth seemed to curve into an almost imperceptible arc, as if to say, "You also contributed, don't be modest."

Just as their brief, silent exchange ended, Xiao Yezi, who had been engrossed in preparing the ribs in her bowl, suddenly raised her face, which was still covered in sauce.

She blinked her big, dark eyes, looking at Uncle Chen, who still had a slight smile on his lips, and then at Sister Jiang, whose eyes were bright and seemed to be smiling as well.

She bit her spoon, thought hard for a moment, and then announced in her clear, loud childish voice, with the certainty of someone who had discovered a major secret:

"Sister Jiang, Uncle Chen, you both smile at each other as soon as you hear my grandma speak, just like my parents do when they eat!"
