Reborn to Make Games: My Girlfriend is a Game Streamer
Chapter 21 "The Informant" - Grandpa Qin
Chen Bainian stepped off the back of the real estate agent's electric scooter. The warm spring afternoon breeze made him sneeze twice.
He rubbed his nose and looked up at the rather old office building in front of him.
Several tiles on the exterior wall have peeled off, revealing the gray cement underneath. The whole building looks like a toothless old man with a gaping mouth, exuding a sense of vicissitude.
This is the fourth place he has visited today.
"Bro, this building is a bit old, but it's great value for money. The key is that lots of creative and design companies are clustered here, so the atmosphere is great!"
As the real estate agent locked the car, he enthusiastically introduced the car, trying to dispel the obvious disappointment on Chen Bainian's face.
Chen Bainian didn't say anything and followed the agent up the dimly lit stairs.
The hallway was filled with a faint musty smell, mixed with the scent of dust.
Pushing open the door to room 201, an even stronger smell of stale dust hits you.
The room was empty, with only a few scraps of paper left behind by the previous tenant scattered in the corner.
He walked to the window, which faced north and let in little sunlight, making the room feel cold and damp.
He subconsciously reached out and touched the inner wall, feeling a cool, damp sensation on his fingertips.
"This place won't do," Chen Bainian quickly judged in his mind. "The team will be staring at screens for long periods of time. With this kind of lighting and ventilation, let alone inspiring creativity, it's hard to even guarantee basic health. The walls are damp, and electronic devices are also prone to damage."
He values cost-effectiveness, but he will never compromise on the health and work efficiency of his team members.
After viewing the apartment, Chen Bainian walked to the bus stop and sat down, watching the cars come and go. His assessment of the area dropped even further.
My phone vibrated; it was a message from Xu Haoran: "How's it going? Anything suitable?"
Chen Bainian replied with a wry smile: "Let's take another look. They all feel a bit lacking."
The warm afternoon sun in early spring makes people feel cozy and lazy.
As he boarded the bus back to his neighborhood and watched the skyscrapers flash by outside the window, Chen Bainian's mind became clearer.
He doesn't need a luxurious office space, but it should be a place where everyone can feel at ease to create.
Ideally, there should also be a sunny corner where "Big Brother" can comfortably take a nap.
After all, neither he nor Jiang Yiting were home during the day, leaving the kitten alone in the rented apartment always made him uneasy.
The bus stopped at the same stop where Jiang Yiting had boarded that morning.
Chen Bainian got out of the car and strolled slowly back to the entrance of the residential area.
"Little Chen, you're back at this hour? What are you busy with?" Security guard Grandpa Qin was sitting in the guard booth, sipping tea with his eyes half-closed. He greeted him with a smile when he saw him.
Chen Bainian stopped in his tracks.
Thinking of Grandpa Qin's "gossip" nature, an idea struck me, and I decided to give it a try and chat with him:
"Uncle Qin, I'd like to find an office space for my studio nearby. Do you have any recommendations?"
"Oh! You've come to the right person!" Old Qin put down his enamel teacup, a smug look on his face. "Don't you even know where we are?"
Chen Bainian immediately thought of the anecdotes about resettlement housing in Hangzhou.
Legend has it that many of these early residents who received compensation for their land expropriation had large sums of cash on hand, and many of them took advantage of the city's development to buy houses, shops, or even entire office buildings.
These people have long since achieved financial freedom and are doing what they love.
He looked at Grandpa Qin, who was wearing a security guard uniform but was calm and composed, and remembered that he was also one of the resettled residents.
Chen Bainian couldn't help but probe curiously, "Does your family... also own a few office buildings?"
"Pfft..." Chen Bainian almost spat out the mouthful of hot tea he had just drunk, but luckily he turned his head in time and was not affected.
"Cough cough... You really have wild ideas!" He caught his breath, wiping his mouth with a towel, half-laughing and half-crying. "How many buildings? Not a single one!"
Although Grandpa Qin rejected Chen Bainian's idea, he also understood the meaning behind his words.
Grandpa Qin's family is indeed quite wealthy, and he is indeed doing what he loves.
Chen Bainian smiled sheepishly: "Then could you recommend someone for me?"
"Tell me first what your studio does," Grandpa Qin said, his expression turning serious.
"We make games," Chen Bainian replied without suspicion. "Is there any particular reason for that?"
"Of course there are specific considerations. You're making games, which is considered part of the internet, right? That's a high-tech industry." Grandpa Qin explained to him in detail, "Our district has policy support for the Art and Innovation Town on Wangjiangshan Road. There are rent subsidies, and it seems you can also apply for some kind of R&D expense reduction."
"You know about this too?" Chen Bainian was somewhat surprised, not expecting that Grandpa Qin could speak so accurately about industrial policies and specific locations.
"I have many younger relatives in my family, and I don't understand these things. How am I supposed to communicate with them?"
Grandpa Qin chuckled smugly twice: "Alright, leave your contact information. I'll recommend someone to you later. He's a section chief in the town's management committee and knows a lot about this."
Unexpectedly, after all the twists and turns, the most reliable source of information was right beside me.
"Thank you very much, Uncle Qin," Chen Bainian said. "I'll leave you my phone number."
"Why leave your phone number? Add me on WeChat." As he spoke, Grandpa Qin took out his latest iPhone 6, opened the WeChat QR code, and handed it to Chen Bainian.
"It has to be you, you're so fashionable." Chen Bainian said with a smile as he added Grandpa Qin on WeChat.
"By the way, does your studio need investment?" Old Master Qin asked in a low voice, as if he had suddenly remembered something.
"You have connections in this too?" Chen Bainian was genuinely surprised.
"Do you remember Little Leaf who kept chasing after you for the cat a few days ago?"
"That left a very deep impression on me." Chen Bainian nodded deeply.
"His father used to be a senior executive at Taotian, and then he started his own investment company. Our village's collective funds are managed by him," Grandpa Qin explained. "If you need anything, I can help you make a connection."
"Thank you for your kind offer." Chen Bainian smiled and politely declined, his tone gentle yet firm, "However, we currently have sufficient funds."
The studio's initial investment was not large. Once the sales revenue from "Getting Over It" arrives next month, it should be able to operate smoothly.
"Didn't realize?" Old Master Qin looked him up and down. "When you first came to our neighborhood looking for an apartment, you didn't seem like someone who was short of money."
"Isn't this the first game that's sold well?" Chen Bainian smiled.
"Hahaha, good! You've got potential!" Grandpa Qin laughed heartily, his eyes filled with appreciation for the younger generation. "Not bad, not bad at all. This old man's judgment of people is as accurate as ever."
Just then, an elderly neighbor in the community invited Grandpa Qin to play mahjong.
Chen Bainian then took his leave and headed towards his own building.
After Chen Bainian had walked away, Grandpa Qin's mahjong partner asked with a smile, "Old Qin, which family is that young man from? He looks quite energetic."
Grandpa Qin replied with a smile, "I introduced him to a young man who rents in our neighborhood. He's young, has already earned his first pot of gold, and is preparing to start his own company."
"Do you have a boyfriend? My granddaughter is a junior in college, maybe..."
Grandpa Qin waved his hand, interrupting his old friend: "Don't worry about it. The young man has his own plans."
After saying that, he glanced meaningfully at Chen Bainian's departing figure, recalling the scene of him and Jiang Yiting leaving together that morning, and a knowing smile appeared on his face.
