Redemption from the Abyss: The School Beauty Insists on Pulling Me Out of the Mire
Chapter 198 The Light Left for Tomorrow
Chen Jianping was being held by two policemen, one on each side. His blood-stained face was twisting and turning toward the ward, and he was making suppressed sobs.
Wang Nan frowned and glanced at Chen Jianping, then gestured for his men to take the man to the stairwell at the end of the corridor to wait.
Xie Wang stood in front of the glass window, his deep gaze fixed on the little girl on the hospital bed through that small transparent area.
The little girl opened her eyes with some difficulty; they were clear eyes, untouched by any impurities.
She stared blankly at the empty ward, not crying or making a fuss, but just tightly gripping the edge of the blanket with her small hand that wasn't stuck with an IV needle, her body curled up slightly in fear.
Xie Wang looked at the girl's pale and thin face, and the woolen hat she wore to cover up her hair loss from chemotherapy, and his heart ached terribly.
In that instant, Xie Wang saw in the girl's eyes, filled with fear and helplessness, himself twelve years ago, huddled in the corner of the rented room.
That was the feeling of utter isolation after being completely abandoned by the world, leaving one to face the darkness alone.
Xie Wang released Su Qinghe's hand, reached out and pushed open the door to the ward, and walked in with steady steps.
Su Qinghe did not stop her. She followed Xie Wang quietly to the bedside.
When the little girl saw the two strangers walk in, she shrank back slightly and spoke in a weak and somewhat childish voice.
"Brother, where did my dad go?" The little girl's big eyes filled with tears.
Xie Wang sat down on a chair in front of the hospital bed, placing his large hands—the ones he usually used to type code and teach enemies a lesson—on his knees, trying to make his body look less aggressive.
He looked into the girl's eyes, his Adam's apple bobbing, but ultimately he didn't reveal the cruel truth.
"Your father went to work in a very far place. He's going to earn a lot of money so that the doctor can cure you."
Xie Wang's voice was gentle.
He used the kindest yet most helpless lie that all adults would use when facing a child who is about to lose their parents.
Upon hearing this, the little girl finally couldn't hold back her tears and they streamed down her face, dripping onto the white sheets.
"But it hurts so much, the injection hurts so much, I want my dad to be with me." The little girl sniffled and told her story with a sob in her voice.
Su Qinghe watched this scene from the side, a ripple of emotion appearing in her eyes.
"You have to be brave, listen to the doctor, get better, and your father will come back to see you," Su Qinghe comforted her in her soft, pleasant voice.
She even reached out her fair fingers to straighten the little girl's slightly crooked woolen hat.
The little girl felt that tenderness, and her emotions gradually calmed down.
She looked at the two people sitting on the bed with her eyes, which were untouched by the world.
"Will you come to see me again tomorrow?" the little girl asked in a weak, hopeful voice.
Xie Wang looked at that gaunt face and nodded solemnly.
"As long as you take your medicine obediently, we will come to see you." Xie Wang gave a promise that was not perfunctory.
The door to the ward was pushed open a crack.
Wang Nan walked in quietly and gave Xie Wang a wink.
Xie Wang stood up, tucked the blanket around the little girl, and then turned and walked out of the ward with Su Qinghe.
The incandescent lights in the corridor emitted a cold glow, and the air still carried that lingering smell of disinfectant.
"Chen Jianping committed a serious crime and will be transferred to the detention center first thing tomorrow morning." Wang Nan looked at Xie Wang, her tone revealing a sense of helplessness towards reality.
She turned her head and glanced at the small figure in the glass window.
"The hospital just told me the truth: this child's leukemia is already in its late stage." Wang Nan lowered her voice, laying out the cruelest reality.
"She has no relatives left in this world to rely on." Wang Nan completed the background information she had investigated.
Su Qinghe stood beside Xie Wang and quietly held his wrist.
Xie Wang turned his head and looked through the transparent glass at the little girl wearing a yellow woolen hat.
In that child's eyes, he saw himself, the one who had once struggled in the mud.
The man-made car accident twelve years ago destroyed his family and left him to endure a long and painful period as an orphan.
Now that he has personally sent his mother's killer to his doom, he sees a similar tragedy repeating itself in the daughter of this very enemy.
At the same age, both about to lose the most important pillar in their lives at their most vulnerable moment, fate completed a cruel cycle at the door of this hospital ward.
Xie Wang closed his eyes, suppressing all the complex emotions surging in his heart.
"Sister Nan, the transferred one million doesn't need to be frozen anymore." When Xie Wang opened his eyes again, his eyes had returned to calm.
Wang Nan was stunned for a moment, seemingly not expecting that the boy who had just wanted to beat the suspect to death would make such a decision.
"Since time is running out, someone should accompany her on her final journey." Xie Wang's voice sounded very steady in the empty corridor.
"Chen Jianping's capital crime will be judged by the law, but that child is innocent. She should not have to pay the price of dying in bed for her father's sins."
Looking at the tall and upright young man in front of her, Wang Nan felt a heartfelt sense of satisfaction.
Having witnessed the distortion of human nature on the front lines of criminal investigation, she knows better than anyone how precious this kindness, held fast on the edge of the abyss, truly is.
Xie Wang expressed his gratitude to Wang Nan, and then grasped Su Qinghe's hand in return.
On this cold winter night, he personally put an end to his hatred and left a ray of light to dispel fear for that innocent life.
The two walked out of the hospital's inpatient building side by side.
The cold winter wind, carrying a hint of moisture, swept over them, but it couldn't dispel the warmth they exuded.
The black Maybach was parked quietly under the streetlight, and Uncle Chung was standing beside the car waiting.
Xie Wang opened the car door and considerately helped Su Qinghe into the back seat.
The familiar fragrance filled the carriage, completely isolating the oppressive atmosphere of life and death in the hospital.
Xie Wang leaned back in his seat and turned his head to look at the girl next to him.
"Teacher Su, am I being irrational?" Xie Wang joked in a casual tone.
Su Qinghe did not answer, but simply leaned gently against Xie Wang's broad shoulders, following the curve of the chair.
"A thousand pieces of gold can't buy Boss Xie's willingness," Su Qinghe replied in a soft, gentle voice.
She stretched out her slender arms and wrapped them around Xie Wang.
"My boy is the best person in the world." Su Qinghe closed his eyes and softly read aloud the sentence he had written in his diary.
