Chapter 575 It's Time to Take Responsibility
The policeman stared at him for a long time.
Chang Kun wasn't much either; he just stood there.
The room was quiet for a few seconds.
A young policeman nearby whispered, "Captain, should we... go check it out?"
The police officer ignored him and kept his eyes on Chang Kun.
"What makes you so sure that's their hideout?"
Chang Kun thought for a moment, then pointed to his head: "Intuition."
The policeman chuckled: "Intuition? Ha!"
"I haven't been a police officer for long, but I've arrested quite a few human traffickers. I can find those things just by their smell." In this unfamiliar environment, Chang Kun didn't bother to hide anything, since he wouldn't be staying in Nanchang for more than two days anyway.
The police officer paused for a moment, then suddenly laughed.
"Alright!" He stood up, waved to the police officer next to him, and said, "Get some men and go take a look."
He glanced at Chang Kun again: "I'm doing this purely out of respect for you as a fellow comrade. Besides, we don't have any new leads right now, so we might as well give it a shot."
"But if we actually find it, I'll buy you a drink; if we don't..."
The meaning was conveyed even though the words were not finished.
Chang Kun nodded: "If you can't find it, I'll treat you to drinks."
The policeman was amused and walked out.
As she walked to the door, she turned back to look at Chang Kun and gestured with her chin.
"We're all comrades, you should come along too, you can lead the way."
Chang Kun followed them out of the police station.
This police station is quite impressive; it even has a jeep, while everyone else is riding bicycles.
The police officer in charge, who called himself Lao Zheng, had Chang Kun get into a jeep and sit right next to him.
"Which way?"
"South of the city, shantytown."
The jeep started up, and Lao Zheng didn't say a word the whole way, nor did Chang Kun.
After driving for more than twenty minutes, we arrived at the edge of the shantytown, but the road was too narrow for cars to pass.
A group of police officers followed Chang Kun on foot, making several turns, until they reached the outside of the half-collapsed courtyard wall.
Chang Kun stopped and pointed to the dilapidated courtyard.
"Right here."
Old Zheng gave a signal, and several policemen quietly crept over and scaled the wall to enter.
A moment later, a shout came from inside: "Captain, nobody's here!"
Old Zheng's expression changed, and he quickly walked inside.
Chang Kun followed him inside.
The courtyard was empty, with three dilapidated tile-roofed houses, all with their doors open.
There were cigarette butts, scraps of paper, and leftover cornbread crumbs on the ground, and the stove was still warm.
Old Zheng squatted down, touched the stove, and then turned over the cigarette butts on the ground.
A young policeman nearby muttered, "We searched for three months and couldn't find it, and he found it just like that? Humph! It was empty after all!"
Another police officer muttered, "What a waste of time. We could have found other clues with that time."
Several police officers looked at Chang Kun with a strange expression.
Old Zheng didn't say anything and walked around the yard.
Suddenly, he stopped in a room, squatted down, and pulled a bundle out from under the bed.
Inside, there were several children's tattered clothes and half a crumpled ticket.
He picked up the bundle, his expression gradually becoming serious, and glanced at Chang Kun.
"The location is right!" Old Zheng gritted his teeth. "The stove is still warm, and the person just left; they've been gone for at most half an hour!"
He paused, then frowned.
"They must be catching that small fry in the park. He hasn't been back for a long time, and the people here are getting suspicious."
The police officers nearby were stunned for a moment, then slowly came to their senses.
Old Zheng walked up to Chang Kun and looked him up and down.
"You're really lucky. This is definitely a human traffickers' hideout."
He turned around and waved to the police officers: "Don't just stand there, go ask around and see if you've seen them run in any direction."
Chang Kun didn't say anything more. He had sensed that the human traffickers had moved to another hideout, but he still wanted to give the Nanchang police a chance to prove themselves.
Several police officers responded and left.
Old Zheng glanced at Chang Kun again: "How did you find this place?"
Chang Kun smiled and said, "Maybe I really am just lucky."
"Haha, if all the police had your luck, no criminal could escape." He patted Chang Kun on the shoulder. "Thanks for today. If it weren't for you, we wouldn't have even been able to find this hideout."
"We're all comrades, no need for thanks." Chang Kun stroked his chin. "I'll help ask around and see if we can find any clues."
Old Zheng looked up at him: "Aren't you busy with your own things?"
"It won't make a difference if we wait a little longer." Chang Kun walked out of the courtyard. "The more people we have, the more we can do. We can't let those human traffickers escape."
Old Zheng nodded approvingly and quickly followed.
A group of people left the courtyard and went off to knock on the doors of the surrounding residents.
The people living in the shantytown were a mixed bunch; they would avoid the police as much as possible, and I couldn't get any useful information from them.
"I didn't see it."
"have no idea."
"I didn't notice anything."
Twenty or thirty minutes later, the police officers returned to the courtyard gate, looked at each other, and all shook their heads.
The young policeman muttered, "This place is remote, and it's inhabited by poor people who are busy going out to find food during the day. They wouldn't notice anything happening here."
Old Zheng frowned and didn't say anything.
Chang Kun stood at the gate of the courtyard, his gaze slowly sweeping across the yard.
There was a broken basket next to the stove, with a few tattered clothes thrown inside.
There were some broken tiles piled up at the base of the wall, and fresh footprints were still left on the tiles.
He walked over and gestured with his finger to indicate the direction of the famous footprints.
In the northeast corner, there is the back wall of the yard. At the base of the wall, there is a haystack that is taller than a person. Behind the haystack is a path that leads to the shantytown deeper inside.
Chang Kun stood up and walked in the northeast direction.
"A discovery?" Old Zheng followed.
Chang Kun didn't say anything, but squatted down next to the haystack to examine it.
There were fresh footprints in the soil under the haystack, and several straw sticks were broken, the stubble still fresh.
He reached under the haystack and pulled out a cigarette butt—a Daqianmen brand cigarette butt, clearly freshly smoked and thrown away.
The actual residents of the shantytowns couldn't afford to smoke even unfiltered cigarettes, let alone the filtered Daqianmen brand.
Chang Kun handed the Yantai to Lao Zheng.
Old Zheng took it, looked at it over and over, his eyes lit up, and he looked up at the path behind the haystack.
"That's what I think too; they must have run that way."
Old Zheng laughed heartily: "Great minds think alike."
The police waved to the courtyard: "Chase them east!"
A group of people ran eastward along the path, which became narrower and narrower, with dilapidated houses on both sides.
Based on his senses of the human traffickers' location, Chang Kun deliberately ran ahead to lead the way for the police.
Although the police officers were puzzled, they did not raise any questions. At this moment, speed was of the essence, and they could not hesitate.
After running for about ten minutes, the view suddenly opened up to a deserted factory. The broken brick walls had almost all collapsed, and the factory was overgrown with weeds.
Chang Kun slowed his pace and crept over slowly.
This is the new hideout of the human traffickers. We must not expose ourselves without knowing their firepower.
