Following the directions given by the restaurant owner, Chen Yongqiang rode his bicycle to the entrance of a government compound surrounded by red brick walls.

There are cement pillars on both sides of the gate, and a white sign with black lettering hangs on the gate.

There was a guardhouse at the entrance, behind which sat an old man wearing an armband, reading a newspaper. There were no guards with guns on duty, but it wouldn't be easy for ordinary people to just walk in.

Chen Yongqiang parked his bicycle, walked to the window of the guardhouse, and knocked on the glass.

The old man inside, who was reading a newspaper, opened the window and scrutinized him from head to toe: "Who are you looking for?"

Without saying much, Chen Yongqiang pulled two unopened packs of Daqianmen cigarettes from his pocket and stuffed them through the window: "Old man, I have a question. Which leader is in charge of purchasing for our office canteen?"

The old man glanced at the two packs of cigarettes, but didn't take them immediately. Instead, he asked, "Why are you asking about this?"

Chen Yongqiang's smile remained unchanged: "I brought some local specialties from the countryside. They're absolutely top-quality. I was wondering if the canteen leaders would accept them. I'd like to improve the meals at work."

Upon hearing that the old man had come to sell local specialties, the slight relaxation on his face immediately disappeared.

He stuffed the two packs of cigarettes into his pocket, but said curtly, "The cafeteria has plenty of local specialties." Then he closed the window.

Just as Chen Yongqiang was about to get angry, he suddenly heard two car horns beep behind him.

He turned around and saw a military green jeep parked not far from the gate.

The old man from the gatehouse also hurried out, jogging to open the large iron gate while waving and urging Chen Yongqiang, "Quick! Push your bicycle to the side, don't block the way!"

Chen Yongqiang had just moved his bicycle two steps to the side when someone jumped out of the jeep's driver's seat.

"Brother Chen? What are you doing here?"

Chen Yongqiang looked up and laughed. It turned out to be Shen Hongjun, who had wanted to buy his fish in town before the New Year.

Chen Yongqiang smiled and said, "I'm here to sell some local specialties, and I'm looking for a way to do it."

"Oh? What good stuff?" Shen Hongjun became interested.

"Some wild boar meat, and some 'rouge rice' grown by farmers," Chen Yongqiang answered truthfully.

Shen Hongjun clearly knew his stuff: "You actually have Rouge Rice? That used to be tribute rice for the palace!"

"It was some that a fellow villager grew, and they asked me to help them bring it out to sell," Chen Yongqiang said carefully.

When Shimen Village first implemented the household responsibility system, it was already autumn and rice could not be planted. The seasons were indeed not right, and he had to make up for it.

"Where is it? Let me see." Shen Hongjun said as he walked towards Chen Yongqiang's bicycle.

At this moment, the old man in the gatehouse pushed open the large iron gate and turned around to see Chen Yongqiang and Shen Hongjun standing together, talking animatedly.

The old man's heart skipped a beat: "This kid knows the Shen family? Why didn't he say so earlier!"

Shen Hongjun comes from a military family and currently works in the county's armed forces department.

Chen Yongqiang walked to the bicycle, first took the bag of rouge rice off the front bar, untied the hemp rope, and opened the bag.

Shen Hongjun leaned forward, grabbed a handful of rice, and said, "It really is Rouge Rice. How much do you plan to sell it for?"

Shen Hongjun leaned forward and grabbed a handful of rice: "The color and aroma are perfect, it really is Rouge Rice. How much do you plan to sell it for?"

Chen Yongqiang knew that the market price of ordinary rice was only about 30 cents per kilogram.

"Ninety cents a pound." This price is already three times that of ordinary rice, but he knows that for those who know their stuff, it's still an understatement.

Shen Hongjun readily nodded, "How many do you have? I'll take them all."

"This bag weighs about 100 pounds." Chen Yongqiang retied the hemp rope.

"So little?" Shen Hongjun was a little surprised. His family consists of more than a dozen people across three generations, and with all the gifts they give and receive, this hundred-odd kilograms of rice really wouldn't last long.

Chen Yongqiang explained, "The bicycle can't carry too much, so please eat these first. I'll bring you more next time I come to the county town."

Shen Hongjun lifted the coarse cloth covering the bamboo basket and looked at the distinct red and white wild boar meat inside: "This meat is not bad, but the quantity is a bit large. Here, you come in with me and we'll take it directly to the canteen."

His main interest was in the rouge rice; while the wild boar meat was good, his family couldn't consume too much of it.

Chen Yongqiang pushed his bicycle and followed Shen Hongjun's jeep into the government compound.

The two arrived at a row of bungalows on the side of the compound, with a sign hanging at the door that read "Government Canteen".

Shen Hongjun, clearly familiar with the place, shouted inside, "Old Li! Come out for a second, there's something good!"

A moment later, a slightly overweight middle-aged man wearing a white apron came out. Upon seeing Shen Hongjun, he smiled broadly and said, "Captain Shen, what brings you here? This is..."

Shen Hongjun pointed to Chen Yongqiang's bicycle: "My brother brought some rare stuff from the countryside. I've checked it, and it's all top-notch. See if the canteen needs it, to improve everyone's meals."

Old Li stepped forward, looked at the wild boar meat in the bamboo basket, and found it to be of exceptional quality.

With Shen Hongjun personally introducing them, they had to give him face no matter what.

He immediately approved: "Yes! Captain Shen recommended them, and the food is so good, we'll book the whole cafeteria!"

Old Li noticed a burlap sack on the front bar of Chen Yongqiang's bicycle: "What's in that sack?"

"That's Rouge Rice, but I've already ordered this bag of rice," Shen Hongjun continued.

Old Li knew that Rouge Rice was a rare commodity, but since Captain Shen had already asked for it, he couldn't say anything more.

Next came the weighing and payment. The wild boar meat weighed a total of 320 jin (160 kg). Prices had gone up a bit this year, so Old Li charged it one yuan per jin.

The actual weight of the rouge rice is 90 jin, calculated at 9 mao per jin.

With both items combined, Chen Yongqiang earned 401 yuan from the government canteen alone on this trip.

"I definitely have to visit your Shimen Village sometime when I have time," Shen Hongjun said, patting Chen Yongqiang on the shoulder, sounding like he hadn't had enough. "I love hunting and fishing, and your mountains must be a great place!"

"That would be great! If Captain Shen comes, I guarantee I'll take you into the mountains. There will be plenty of wild game, and you can fish to your heart's content!" Chen Yongqiang agreed with a smile, and this relationship was thus established.

As Chen Yongqiang emerged from the government compound, the old man in the gatehouse returned the two packs of cigarettes he had just received.

"Just take it and smoke it." Chen Yongqiang wasn't that stingy; if he ran into trouble next time, he would still hope the old man could help pass on a message.

"With the money from selling wild boar and rice, it should be enough to buy a tractor. Since I've come all the way to the county town, I naturally want to clear out all the wild boars in the space." He rode away on his bicycle, pondering his next destination.

Having succeeded in working at the government canteen, perhaps we can try our luck in other organizations by following the same approach?
