Chapter 62: Playing Big in the Shadows
Chapter 62: Playing Big in the Shadows
In the original story, before Bane began his plan to destroy Gotham, he took Batman to Penadoro prison in the Caribbean Republic of San Priscilla, where Batman grew up.
Many years ago, a pregnant woman was brought here and gave birth to a boy in prison. He would bear the consequences of his father's crimes. This boy was Bane—born into this dark and sinful prison, forever trapped there until he escaped and came to Gotham to begin his tyrannical career.
In the duel, he defeated Batman, Gotham's only apparent protector, and even broke Batman's spine, an event known as the "Brokeback Mountain" battle.
As a troublemaking villain, cough cough, Bane decided to make Gotham's guardian taste the pain he suffered back then, so he threw Bruce into this prison.
In this life, things seem a little different.
"What? Batman is still locked up in an underground cage?" Ang received a communication from Huntress and frowned. "As expected, this is no simple Gotham riot."
Ang decided to hold back, while Bain, as in history, began his grand performance with unbridled abandon.
He first led his troops into Wayne Enterprises headquarters, and after killing several guards, he swiftly kidnapped Lucius Fox, the chairman of the board, Miranda Tate, who was disguised as a victim, and an ordinary shareholder, and took them all to the underground world.
This undoubtedly triggered the mayor of Gotham's wrath, who immediately ordered the hapless Chief Gordon to lead all the police officers into the sewers to rescue people.
"This is a disgrace! If so many patriotic businessmen are kidnapped by criminals and the police do nothing, will any businessmen still want to invest in Gotham City?"
Even if it's not just about the power of a higher-ranking official, with such a huge public opinion influence, Gordon couldn't remain inactive.
He originally had a plan to second New York City police officers to help clean up the sewers of criminals, and now that several police chiefs have discussed it, they immediately decided to proceed with the plan.
then……
Tens of thousands of police officers walked right into Bane's trap.
"Boom!"
Most of the tunnel entrances were constructed using cement with added additives; what appears to be cement can actually be detonated.
Tens of thousands of police officers were suddenly trapped in the sewers.
However, it differs slightly from historical records in the following ways:
"Hey buddy, how come you guys prepared so much?"
The Gotham City police officers stared dumbfounded as their New York colleagues pulled a ton of stuff out of their backpacks:
Extra-large power banks, emergency lights, plastic sheeting for paving, large quantities of compressed biscuits in different flavors, canned vegetables, water purification tablets for treating wastewater...
He meows!
Unsuspecting people would think they were camping in a primeval forest.
The New York City police were also somewhat bewildered: "We don't know either, but that's what we were told—each person prepare enough food and water for two people, for at least fifteen days."
Gotham Police: "..."
On the ground, with no more than 90% of the police force remaining, and no one left to restrain Bane, he led a large number of his henchmen into a stadium where a Super Bowl game was being held, and announced that he was going to kidnap the entire city.
"This is a nuclear fusion reactor! And a giant treasure that can send you all to heaven! I—Bane—hereby declare that I have taken over Gotham City! No one is allowed to leave this city. Anyone who dares to step out of this city without my permission will be reduced to ashes!"
Bain unveiled the nuclear scientist he had kidnapped, and the ever-increasing radiation levels at the scene told the US government that this thing could be used as a nuclear weapon.
And so, the most outrageous thing ever happened in Gotham City.
The National Guard blocked every bridge leading to Gotham City for the gangsters.
It's important to understand that Gotham is a city built on a large island. Once the bridges are blocked, the only way to leave Gotham is by water.
In fact, winter is already approaching.
Many of the waterways between Gotham and the mainland are frozen over.
The ice layer wasn't thick; anyone who walked on it would definitely fall into the ice hole and drown.
However, the ice provided the defenders with excellent visibility. Anyone who tried to run out would be seen, either caught and executed, or left to fall into the ice hole and drown.
Bain and his men began to wreak havoc in the city. They incited hatred of the rich among the people, encouraged the poor to loot the mansions of the rich, and hanged those they called heartless social parasites from streetlights or exiled them to the ice, where they fell into the ice caves to their deaths.
Everything seemed to be no different from the original history, except for a few intruders.
"Hey, Ang, it seems you couldn't have been wiser to set up your home on the outskirts of Gotham City." Gwen hung upside down on the spider web, as if passing the time, swinging back and forth, occasionally floating over to nibble at Ang.
Ang ignored Gwen and focused his attention on the images transmitted by the Huntress.
At the center of the image is a terrifying doorway located in Gotham's underground space.
This terrifying door frame is ten meters high and four meters wide, and is made entirely of human skeletons.
It wasn't the skeleton dug out of the grave, but... bones that were skinned alive after a person was killed, still with traces of bright red blood.
The victims were the wealthy people who were executed by the public at Bain's instigation.
Among them was Catwoman's old acquaintance, Mr. Dagate, the former second-largest shareholder of Wayne Enterprises.
Ang didn't even send the video of Dagate's fate to Catwoman; he merely described it to her, and then the beautiful woman's agonizing vomiting could be heard on the other end of the phone.
"Enough! Kratos, don't you know what it means to cherish a woman?"
"If you really are a clueless little girl..."
"Hmph!" Catwoman made Kratos grit his teeth in hatred.
Deep down, she couldn't help but think more highly of Kratos.
If Bane is eventually brought to justice, it will prove that Kratos is the one who controls everything and is the most brilliant player, and even Batman is just a pawn on his chessboard.
"Kratos, what are you waiting for?"
"A shock! Or rather, an accident that was destined to happen!" Ang began to speak in riddles again.
"I hope you're right." Catwoman hung up the phone.
Beside Ang, Gwen continued to dangle in mid-air, while Sarah fed Ang a peeled grape. Having experienced several zombie incidents, they were already used to what was about to happen.
Rather, this was purely a deliberate attempt by Ang to lure people in, to see how this guy from the zombie universe actually came to this world.
For three days straight, Bane was openly engaged in all sorts of anti-human and anti-social mischief. He even managed to get his hands on the secret workshop that Batman and Lucius had been working on, acquiring several high-tech tanks on par with the Batmobile.
While temporarily ruling Gotham, Bane also enjoyed criticizing the US president.
In the shadows, the bloody gate beneath Gotham is finally about to open.
