a new day.
"So, this is the focus of the final exams next week. I hope you can give your families a satisfactory answer by the end of June."
The bell rang, and Chloe walked out carrying a stack of review materials.
Pete and Clark followed behind Chloe. Little Black scratched his head, glancing at the empty seat: "So, Gino hasn't come to class today?"
"yes."
Chloe pursed her lips and gestured with her chin to the books in her arms: "These are review materials; I'm going to take them to Gino."
Pete and Clark exchanged a glance, both wearing knowing smiles.
Chloe was going to find Gino, so Pete could only look at Clark: "Okay, Clark, what are you planning to do?"
"Go home, then play some video games." Clark was clearly not a good student when it came to studying; the big boy pursed his lips and said, "My parents recently went on vacation to the Metropolitan Area, so..."
Pete quickly put his arm around Clark's neck and said, "Great, I'll go with you!"
Black people are naturally averse to studying, and Pete is no exception; he would rather spend his study time sleeping!
The three parted ways at the school gate. Clark drove the slightly chipped SUV back to Kent Farm with Pete.
The two became addicted to video games.
"Bang!"
Clark fiddled with the controller, maneuvering his character to defeat Pete.
Please!
Pete let out a wail and collapsed onto the sofa without any regard for his image.
Clark was about to say something to Pete when he heard a faint sound.
"Wait a minute, I think I heard something?"
Clark put down the game controller, pushed open the door, and ran out of the farm.
The setting sun hung over the farm in the afternoon as Clark walked toward the sound.
Pushing open the old warehouse door, Clark looked up at the attic above him.
A continuous trembling sound emanated from the yellowed wooden board.
"Crackling!"
"Who's up there?!" Clark shouted, pursing his lips.
No one responded.
Pete rushed over from behind, holding a powerful flashlight, and looked at his companion with a tense expression: "What happened?!"
Pitt was clearly a little nervous after the Jolie incident.
"Let's go up and take a look."
Clark clenched his fist.
The shoes made a "clacking" sound as they stepped on the old wooden planks.
The two walked up to the attic, and Pete shone his flashlight into the corner of the attic.
A bright light pierced the darkness, and under the glaring light, a tall, muscular black man lay in the corner, his face covered in sweat.
He looked very weak, his eyes were shining in the light, and the black man struggled to raise his arm.
"Where did this vagrant come from?" Pete cursed, grabbing a pitchfork to teach his compatriot from hundreds of years ago a lesson.
"Wait a minute!"
Clark stretched out his arm to stop Pete.
The boy squinted, his gaze lingering on the Black man's features for a moment before saying, "I know him."
"Are you Earl?"
Clark's eyes were filled with shock: "How did you end up on my farm?"
The Black man shook his head, his voice trembling as he leaned against the wall: "I've come to find your father; he's the only person I trust."
Earl recounted his ordeal to Clark.
"An experiment by the Luther Group?"
Clark frowned slightly, Gino's image flashing through his mind. He shook his head and said, "I think there must be some misunderstanding here."
"No, there's no misunderstanding!" Earl exclaimed, grabbing Clark's arm before he could reply. "Look at my hands, the veins are stained a dark green. Is that normal?"
"Whoosh!"
The moment Earl touched Clark, a terrible sense of weakness instantly enveloped Clark, and the veins on the back of his hand bulged and emitted a deep green color.
"Thump!" Clark's legs buckled and he fell to the ground, while Earl's body convulsed and flickered wildly at the same time.
"Cough, cough." Clark weakly gripped the floor, struggling to lift his head to look at Pete: "Call an ambulance!"
Earl was taken away by ambulance.
Pete and Clark sat in the hospital corridor, talking about Earl.
Pete asked curiously, "So, how did you meet that down-on-his-luck old man?"
Clark rested his chin on his hands, a look of reminiscence in his eyes, and said, "Earl used to be an employee on my father's farm, working for my family for ten summers. Later, in pursuit of a higher salary, he joined the local Luther Chemical Plant."
"I remember he once taught me to play the guitar, saying that boys who could play the guitar could attract girls."
"No," Pete interrupted Clark's reminiscence, "Playing guitar won't attract girls; you need to be rich."
Clark's face darkened, and he sighed, "Anyway, that's how it is. Earl is a good man."
"I just don't know what he went through to contract this strange disease."
As the two were talking, two police officers walked in from outside the hospital. Clark recognized them as the same officers who had visited his farm before.
"Nurse, which room is Earl Skinner in?"
They flashed their police badges, and the nurse checked the computer and said, "In room five on the second floor."
Clark and Pete exchanged a glance, then stood up.
Clark approached the two police officers: "Excuse me, I'm Earl's friend. What happened?"
What kind of trouble might Earl have gotten into if the American police came knocking on his door?
The two policemen glanced at Clark: "You're Mr. Gino's friend, aren't you?"
"That's right."
"Okay, we can tell you something," the veteran officer in his fifties said in a low voice. "We've received orders from the Metropolitan Police Department that Earl is suspected of murdering a janitor for the Luther Cartel."
"What?" Clark was filled with shock. "This is impossible, Earl."
Before Clark could finish speaking, a cry of alarm rang out from the second floor of the hospital: "They need help here!"
The two policemen quickly abandoned Clark and ran towards the second floor of the hospital.
Clark and Pete quickly followed.
When they climbed the stairs to the second floor, they saw Earl, dressed in a hospital gown, convulsing violently in a hospital ward. His movements were so fast that he left countless afterimages in the air.
"Stop him!"
Two policemen roared and lunged at Earl.
"Bang!"
The two who tried to stop Earl were instantly thrown away and slammed heavily against the iron frame in the corner, letting out painful howls.
"Earl, what's wrong?"
Clark opened his arms and charged toward the man.
Seizing the opportunity, Clark spread his fingers and gripped the man's wrist tightly, stopping Earl's trembling body.
Restrained by a pair of iron hands, Earl swayed for a while, then seemed to have exhausted his strength and collapsed into Clark's arms.
"Thump!"
Clark also suddenly weakened, and the two of them collapsed onto the cold floor.
As if his entire body were submerged in icy seawater, a sense of powerlessness swept over his limbs. With heavy eyelids, Clark forced himself to stay awake, and in the last second before losing consciousness, he told himself, "I must find Gino and get to the bottom of this."
After all, Earl's condition was very similar to that of those who came into contact with Kryptonite.
