Chapter 138 Lana's Love Letter
Chapter 138 Lana's Love Letter
early morning.
The town was brightly lit.
In twos and threes, residents carried chandeliers and hurried to the fields not far from the town.
There was no reason for everyone to worry; the loud bang at three in the morning was like a missile exploding.
If this weren't Kansas but some other state, the townspeople might even suspect that a bandit-like mold had come to kill them.
Martha and Jonathan also left their farm.
Then they saw a figure covered in mud lying outside their farm.
"Clark!"
Martha gasped, covering her mouth in surprise, recognizing at a glance that the person was her adopted son whom she had raised for over a decade.
"What happened?"
Jonathan ran with Martha to Clark's side and struggled to lift the unconscious Clark. Thinking of the explosion that night, the middle-aged man's face grew even more grim.
Is Clark possibly involved in this?
Smallville cemetery.
Thick fog obscured the view, and tombstones were scattered haphazardly everywhere. Some were so old that the inscriptions on them were illegible, and it was unknown which unfortunate souls were buried there.
The strangely shaped flowers and trees growing on both sides of the cemetery add to its eerie atmosphere.
"Da da~"
The crisp sound of horses' hooves echoed through the thick fog, like a headless horseman surveying his territory.
"Shh~"
Lana held the reins and braced herself against the horse.
The girl lightly leaped off the horse, her eyes filled with sorrow, and walked gently into the depths of the cemetery, afraid of making too much noise and disturbing the eternal rest of the deceased.
Holding a bunch of tulips in her hand, Lana walked around the tombstone and into the depths.
Soon, Lana stood before a brand-new tombstone.
Compared to the surrounding dusty tombstones, this tombstone was clearly visited and cleaned regularly.
"Father, Mother."
Lana looked at the name on the tombstone and sighed softly.
The girl bent down and placed clean, fragrant tulips into the vase next to her as a gesture of remembrance.
However, an envelope next to the vase caught Lana's attention.
A stone was placed on top of the envelope to prevent it from being blown away by the wind.
Lana took the stone and picked up the envelope with a surprised expression.
The elegant signature of "Lana" was outlined in black ink on the front of the white envelope.
"Shh~"
Something seemed to be wandering around.
Lana looked up, her large eyes filled with wariness: "Hello?"
Is anyone home?
There was no response; the cemetery was silent in the early hours of the morning.
The girl breathed a sigh of relief and looked down at the envelope.
"What are you looking at?"
A male voice suddenly rang out from behind him.
"what!"
Lana screamed and turned her head.
Gino, wearing black sweatpants, stood behind him with his hands in his pockets.
"Gino, Gino?!"
The boy who suddenly appeared behind Lana was undoubtedly a series of blows to her heart.
However, a jumble of chaotic thoughts came to mind: a lonely man and woman in the middle of nowhere.
Lana pursed her lips, trying to clear her head, and frowned slightly, revealing her displeasure: "How did you end up here?"
"Yeah, I was woken up by the explosion in the middle of the night and couldn't sleep, so I came out for a walk and saw you here too." Gino smiled, looking at the envelope in Lana's hand: "A love letter?"
Lana nodded with a complicated expression: "Probably."
"To be honest, this behavior is quite horrifying," Lana sighed, waving the envelope in her hand.
The girl had received love letters before, but the way she delivered them at her parents' graves was simply too crazy.
Lana was even afraid that the mysterious admirer might do something bad to her parents' gravestones.
"Yes, delivering love letters in the middle of nowhere, you seem to be quite popular."
"Maybe." Lana glanced at Gino, then lowered her head again to stare at the envelope in her hand.
A few wolf howls came from afar, but the thought of Gino standing behind her eased Lana's fear considerably.
The girl opened the envelope.
Gino, standing behind her, also stared at the letter in the girl's hand and slowly read aloud: "Accept me, imprison me."
The boy recited in an aria tone: "Otherwise, I will never be free, nor pure, unless you possess me."
The warm breath touched Lana's ear, making the girl's earlobes turn red.
"Yes, poems by John Donne." Gino turned his gaze away: "A seventeenth-century English metaphysical poet, whose turbulent life made him constantly yearn for death and decay."
Gino sighed softly and recited his favorite line of poetry: "Ask not for whom the bell tolls, it tolls for thee."
Lana stared at Gino with her mouth agape, her large eyes brimming with delight: "My God, I didn't know you knew John Donne! He's my favorite poet!"
Gino raised an eyebrow and chuckled: "Hmm, judging from this poem, your admirer seems to be quite well-read."
"Who do you think it could be?" Lana put away the envelope, in a cheerful mood. "To be honest, I haven't received a love letter since the third grade of elementary school."
Gino shrugged. "I don't know. Anyone could have written it. Maybe Clark wrote it?"
Upon hearing this, the smile that had been on Lana's face vanished like ice and snow. She pouted and said, "Forget it, that guy is probably looking forward to his date with the new transfer student."
"That's hard to say, Lana." Gino smiled slightly, ignoring the red ring bouncing in his pocket, and turned to leave, not forgetting to say to the girl, "Maybe he'll come and apologize to you when you go to school tomorrow morning."
After leaving the cemetery, Gino did not return to the castle, but instead turned around and went to the experimental base hidden underground in the chemical plant.
The metal doors opened, and compared to the bustling laboratory earlier, the scientists at three in the morning clearly needed plenty of sleep and rest. Except for a very few workaholics, most of the scientists had already left the laboratory.
But Gino knew there was one person who would never leave.
His gaze swept across the hall and soon spotted Lex standing beside a sleeping body.
"How did the experiment go?" Gino walked over to Lex.
"To be honest, you always manage to surprise me a lot."
Lex put down the lab report in his hand and glanced at Aikins's sleeping face: "The liquid on this woman's body has a peculiar ability to alter the body's systems by causing them to secrete large amounts of hormones, leading to a loss of control, through contact."
"If used in the perfume industry, it could be a considerable source of profit."
Gino was used to Lex's brilliant ideas: "I didn't come to you for that, but to give you something new and interesting."
"You know Clark's been acting a bit strange lately, right?"
"That's right. I heard he suddenly became incredibly wealthy, and his personality is extremely awful. Apparently, he beat up several drunks at a local bar." Lex walked to the lounge area, picked up a cup of coffee, took a sip, and sized up his brother. "Any information you can share?"
"It's simple, Clark's changes are related to this little thing." Gino tossed a red ring from his pocket: "Unlike green kryptonite, which weakens Clark's physique, red seems to make him irritable and easily angered, bringing out the dark side of Clark's heart."
