Chapter 259 The Truth About Angels
Chapter 259 The Truth About Angels
Thousands, perhaps tens of thousands of years ago, when humanity had just lit the first glimmer of civilization, the world was ruled by countless wondrous creatures. At that time, humans were, in the eyes of those wondrous beings, weak and utterly uninteresting.
Until one day, the first person to master the power of magical creatures appeared. He could summon fire and lightning and grew into a being more powerful than the most dangerous magical creatures in a very short time.
He protected humanity, drove away magical creatures that threatened human lives, and passed on that powerful energy to his people. Later, more and more people possessed the same power as Him, and humanity gradually rose to the top of the food chain.
In that brutal yet glorious era, those who first wielded immense power slew countless dangerous and wondrous creatures, such as ancient dragons, creatures many times larger than modern dragons. But at the same time, they also subdued many others, making them the protectors of humanity.
The vast majority of them disappeared over the long course of time, but a very small number have survived to this day.
Angels are one of them.
Ike returned to the Vatican Palace and went straight to the Sistine Chapel, silently watching the figure that had suddenly appeared above the cross. It had twelve pairs of fleshy wings, each radiating a bright yet soft white light. Its arms were massive and muscular, giving it a powerful appearance. Its face was rugged, with a thick, brown beard that also glowed.
"@#!" The angel's eyes were bloodshot as he coldly stared at Ike, who was much smaller than him. His mouth opened and closed, emitting sounds that Ike couldn't understand. His hands were still waving when two weapons made of light suddenly appeared. With a casual slash, he sliced off a piece of the cross beneath him.
"Oh!"
Ike sneered. After watching for only a short while, he had a pretty good idea of what this so-called "angel" really was: it was just a hodgepodge pieced together.
His exceptional sensitivity to magic allowed him to clearly perceive a barely perceptible crack in the angel's body and wings. Furthermore, the angel possessed more than one power; the manifested holy power was secondary, not even dominant. The dominant power was the one most harmonious with the body, or rather, the power inherent in that "person."
It's quite clear that this is the product of an ancient wizard experimenting on his own body. For some reason, perhaps for immortality, or perhaps to gain greater power, an ancient wizard modified his body, gathering the power of the most powerful members of an "angel" lineage into his wings and then sewing them onto his own body. He then used his own power to connect with those powers and integrate them into himself.
After enduring countless hardships and experiments, the wizard succeeded and has lived from ancient times to the present. However, the fusion of human and magical creature powers is not simple. Even though he suppressed the power of the "angel" with his own magic, he was still affected and even fell into a deep sleep.
Nearly two thousand years ago, someone found the place where he slept and learned a miraculous power from him. Afterward, that person began to walk on the earth, proclaiming what he had learned from him, attracting many believers.
Gradually, the number of believers increased. At first, the believers maintained their piety towards the "angels," but later, as the number of people grew, some of them developed strange ideas—they wanted to understand the power of the "angels" and wanted to obtain that powerful power.
They took the sleeping "angel" away to the Vatican. Later, by chance, they learned of the existence of wizards and discovered that the wizards' powers were remarkably similar to those of the "angels." Compared to the "angels," who remained unharmed no matter how they were experimented on, the fragile wizards were clearly better test subjects.
Thus began a massive hunting campaign. They used the power they had gleaned from the "angels" to fight the wizards and mobilized their followers to join in killing the wizards and looting their collections.
The wizards never anticipated this day would come, or perhaps they did, but they never expected so many people to surround and kill them. In just over a hundred years, the wizards were forced to hide themselves and disappear from the sight of ordinary people.
The Papacy got what they wanted. From the books and secret texts passed down through generations of wizards, they finally learned what "angels" were and thus gained control over them. As a result, they wielded the most powerful force and became the true rulers of the Western lands.
Ike saw this history in the old man's mind, and considering the current situation, it can be basically confirmed to be true.
Looking at the "angel" in front of him who kept speaking in a language he couldn't understand, a hint of pity suddenly appeared in Ike's eyes.
This is perhaps the most tragic ancient wizard in history. Although he was immortal, his power was controlled by a group of ordinary people.
Holding his wand tightly, Ike closed his eyes briefly, then opened them with unwavering resolve. He knew that the only way to obtain the precious information collected by the Papacy was to defeat the "angel" before him. After all, the other option was for the Pope and the five elders to perform some kind of ritual, and he didn't have time to go looking for the Pope who was hiding.
With a wave of his wand, a golden, mysterious magic circle suddenly appeared beneath his feet. With another wave, another magic circle appeared, blocking the way beneath the ceiling. Countless golden threads converged within the magic circles, surrounding him and the "angel," before raining down upon the "angel."
Although the "angel" was no longer quite right in the head, it could still tell that the tiny person in front of it was attacking it. It flapped its wings and frantically swung its weapons, cutting the golden threads that were attacking it in two.
A holy white light flashed, and the golden threads snapped one after another. The "angel" was not one to just take the hits without fighting back. With a flap of its wings, it rushed in front of Ike in the blink of an eye, and slashed its weapon fiercely at Ike's head.
"when!"
A huge crack suddenly appeared on the silver-white shield, which then shattered, turning into specks of silver light and disappearing. The white light barrier was also broken, but it at least gave Ike time to react. With a flick of his finger, his body vanished from its original spot, reappearing behind the "angel".
Without hesitation, Ike activated his double defenses once more, and simultaneously swung his wand fiercely, unleashing another torrent of golden threads. This time, however, he aimed directly at the "angel's" wings.
He understood that to defeat the "angel," he needed to slow him down.
That speed, comparable to phantom teleportation, is practically cheating!
"I can only say, he truly lives up to his reputation as an ancient wizard..."
