Chapter 72 The 2nd Olive Branch
Chapter 72 The Second Olive Branch
What is this? A soul sealed within a body?
Just as the head was about to break free from the body, the golden runes suddenly transformed into layers of chains that sealed the head's seven orifices, pulling it back with all their might.
The human head gradually lost its strength and was about to be pulled back into the male apprentice's body by the golden rune chains.
Suddenly it quickly retracted, then charged towards Thor.
Between the contraction and the stretching, a small gap appeared, and a roar came from the taut lips of the head.
"Help me—"
The golden rune chains tightened again, and the sound abruptly stopped.
It seemed that the cry for help had exhausted all of the man's strength, and the golden rune chains finally managed to pull him back onto the male apprentice's back.
"Hmm?" Rum hummed softly, his fingers suddenly picking up a huge quill pen from the lab table beside him.
The pen nib dipped into an ink bottle about the size of a thumbcap next to it. When it was lifted up, a little sticky golden liquid clung to it, refusing to fall off.
Rum worked quickly, adding a few more lines to the male apprentice's back.
The male apprentice lying there twitched twice, and a painful expression appeared on his face as he turned to the side.
But because of this change, he became more like a living person than a puppet.
As the rune array gradually strengthened, the male apprentice's face returned to calm.
Thor, who had been observing from the side, also stopped meditating.
Once the drawing was finished, Rum tossed the quill back onto the table, made the male apprentice stand up, and re-examined his body.
"Observe for a while longer, then go out. Call the next person in."
The next apprentice was the third one, and this time there were no problems.
The process was very quick, like going through a formality.
After the three of them left, Rum stood there for a moment in thought, then suddenly beckoned Thor to come closer.
Saul walked over somewhat nervously, wondering how Rum would test him.
But, after Rum stretched out his arm and grabbed Saul's shoulder, the first thing he said was...
Have you been having nightmares these past couple of days?
Thor's mind flashed back to the dream of lying naked on the teleportation platform, the sound of his own footsteps searching for the platform, and the dark bottom of the platform.
Mentor Anze said he was being haunted by a vengeful spirit. Is this nightmare a manifestation of being haunted by a vengeful spirit?
But why didn't Kaz's mentor notice it?
"Yes." Saul appropriately showed some unease.
"The vengeful spirit of West Germany is haunting you. It seems you made his death quite unpleasant."
"I was acting in self-defense... which means I was forced to retaliate," Thor quickly explained.
Rum laughed and stretched his neck forward, which actually stretched quite a long way.
"So, do you want me to help you get rid of the vengeful spirit from West Germany?"
Thor was taken aback, and it took him a while to understand what the other person meant. He thought to himself, "Professor Rum, are you West Germany's mentor or mine? Have you mistaken me for someone else's enemy?"
The other person was just complaining that Thor killed his assistant, so why is he now offering to help?
Despite feeling strange, Thor was mostly honest.
"think!"
Rum was pleased with Saul's decisiveness.
"If you want to, then perform well. Kaz said you have outstanding soul talent. He rarely uses 'outstanding' to describe someone. Let me see just how outstanding you are. Tell me, what did you see in those three second-level apprentices just now?"
Thor paused for a moment, organized his thoughts, and then truthfully recounted what he had witnessed.
Rum stared intently at Saul, his expression growing increasingly serious as Saul spoke.
"You can't call this talent... you should call it intuition."
He reached out, grabbed Thor's arm, and made Thor spin around in front of him.
Then he withdrew his hand and placed it on his stomach.
His belly rippled like the surface of a lake.
"Despite not having mastered the knowledge of magic circles and runes, and only having a superficial understanding of witchcraft, he can see through the surface and directly see the essence." Suddenly, Rum pulled his five fingers inward and tore a piece of flesh off his stomach.
After the chunk of flesh was removed from the body, no fresh blood flowed from the wound. Instead, some fat leaked out and blocked the wound.
Rum kneaded the meat in his hands.
That lump of meat could be shaped at will, just like clay.
A doll-like figure quickly took shape in Rum's hands.
He then used his little finger to hook two black, loach-like worms from a bottle and placed them on the doll's face.
The loach slithered into the doll's eyes, leaving two empty holes.
Then, the doll gradually changed color, turning into the light brown of wood.
Isn't this the puppet that the apprentices used to test their mental strength?
Saul then realized that the puppet wasn't made of wood at all. He had even borrowed one to study for several days, but hadn't noticed the material was wrong.
Rum tossed the finished eyeless puppet into Thor's hands.
"Look at it, then tell me what you hear."
Saul took the puppet, glanced at Rum with some doubt, but still did as he was told, looking down into the puppet's empty eyes.
"Help me, help me... I need help too... help me..."
The cries for help rang out again, sometimes mixed with other sounds.
As time passed, Thor's face gradually turned pale.
Gradually, he could no longer intentionally focus on the puppet's eyes, but he couldn't look away.
This freshly made puppet seems more powerful and terrifying than the puppets in the cabinet.
Rum never called a halt.
"...Kill me! Kill me!! Kill me!!!"
The piercing roar rang out again, and Thor immediately felt a sharp pain in his eardrums, his brain spinning inside his skull.
He thought Rum would call a halt, but the latter remained silent.
Thor's mental strength was slightly stronger than when he first became an apprentice, but only slightly, so he felt his vision go black again and was about to faint.
Finally, the puppet in front of them was taken away.
The sharp scream stopped abruptly.
Thor's legs buckled and he almost fell to the ground, but luckily he reached out and caught himself, regaining his balance.
Wait, what was he just supporting?
Thor quickly withdrew his hand, or he would have sunk into Rum's fat.
Rum ignored Saul's little trick, casually tossing the puppet into a nearby barrel and asking, "What did you hear?"
Thor took a breath, feeling as if his brain was about to turn into mush.
"At first, someone was calling for help, saying, 'Help me!'"
Rum didn't react much.
Saul continued, "Then there were other voices, like 'I want one too,' or 'It hurts too much.'"
Mentor Rum nodded slightly. He was about to speak when he realized that Thor was still not finished.
"Finally, there were a few sharp...sounds that killed me." Thor recalled the sound, raised his hands to hug his arms, and felt goosebumps all over his skin.
Rum was about to nod when his expression suddenly changed. He reached forward and gripped Saul's right arm tightly.
"What was the last thing you heard? Kill me?"
Thor felt a sharp pain in his right arm, accompanied by a "crack" sound.
His face contorted in pain as he cried out.
This rum was definitely trying to take this opportunity to get back at me!
But the next second, a white light flashed.
Saul's right arm recovered completely; the pain was so brief it was almost a hallucination, and even his headache subsided considerably.
"You really heard me kill me?" Rum's eyes and the fat on his face twitched.
"Yes." Thor pinched his arm; the bones weren't dislocated.
"Is it a man's voice or a woman's voice?"
"A woman's," Saul added, noticing Rum's apparent concern for the voice, "sounds like she's in a lot of pain."
Rum stared at Saul, his expression somewhat dazed, as if he saw someone else in his face.
"Ha...hahaha...hahahaha!!!!"
He suddenly started laughing wildly, like he was having a seizure.
He kept patting his fat belly with both hands, making a "bang bang" sound along with his laughter.
He gradually laughed so hard he was doubled over, his body still but his head swaying back and forth.
Saul watched in terror, involuntarily taking two steps back, fearing that Rum would burst like a balloon.
Rum laughed for about ten minutes, then suddenly swayed forward, stopped laughing, and stared intently at Saul.
"Would you like to transfer to my school?"
