Chapter 7, Lesson 1: Extremely Efficient

Chapter 7: The First Lesson of High Efficiency

A close neighbor is worse than a distant relative. Although this neighbor, Claire, was so straightforward that it made him a little uncomfortable, Thor took the opportunity to gather information.

He was about to speak when he saw someone walking towards him from one end of the corridor.

The man walked briskly while loudly announcing the news.

"All newly promoted Level 1 apprentices, be at the last classroom on the tenth floor of the East Tower at 9:00 AM sharp for your first general education class!"

"All newly promoted Level 1 apprentices, be at the last classroom on the tenth floor of the East Tower at 9:00 AM sharp for your first general education class!"

Someone heard the noise, opened the door, and asked a question, but the person didn't answer. After delivering the message, they went upstairs along the slope at the end of the building.

A group of new apprentices gathered in the corridor, whispering amongst themselves. The atmosphere was lively, and everyone was full of hope.

"Keli!"

Two more boys ran over, and one of them, with bright, lively eyes, said, "Let's go to class together."

Claire merely glanced at them without replying, then turned to Thor and said, "Let's go now."

The two who were ignored did not show any anger. Instead, they looked at Thor with some apprehension.

Saul realized that these people probably also thought they were very talented, but he couldn't explain it to them, so he just nodded and agreed to go with them.

There was still some time before nine o'clock, and almost all the new apprentices rushed to the East Tower as soon as they heard the news.

The Wizard's Tower itself should be a cylinder, wider at the bottom and narrower at the top, and divided in the middle into two towers, the East and West Towers.

Both the East Tower and the West Tower are semi-circular, separated by a thick wall in the middle, with passageways only on the fifth, sixth, tenth, and fourteenth floors.

These passageways will be closed at night, and people are not allowed to pass through them at will.

Thor had seen the passageway door while cleaning the corridor, but he was never allowed to enter the East Tower.

Following the crowd, he passed through the passageway for the first time and arrived at the East Tower.

The sixth floor of the East Tower does not have the row of rooms found on the West Tower. All that can be seen are gray walls covered with symbols and patterns that Thor cannot understand at all.

One glance was enough to make Thor dizzy.

He turned his head to avoid it and saw that Keli was looking down and had no intention of looking at the wall.

"This guy seems to really know a lot."

"Splash, splash."

Two people ahead of him didn't shift their gaze in time like Thor did, and they fainted and fell to the ground.

People walked past them without offering a helping hand.

As Thor walked past the two men, watching them struggle to stand up, his anticipation for his future life as a wizard apprentice suddenly diminished considerably.

……

"Everyone, be quiet!"

Thor and his friends sat in the last classroom on the tenth floor of the East Tower for about ten minutes when a man in his fifties strode in through the front door.

He strode to the front of the classroom and placed one hand on the lectern.

"The rules of the Gorsa Wizard Tower for the first lesson will only be explained once. Anyone who asks me again will be eaten alive! Ugh..."

As soon as the man finished speaking, he bent over and vomited, which was quite fitting for the occasion.

A large puddle of green slime fell to the ground, splattering everywhere. It contained a few fingers that fell, bounced up, and fell again.

The apprentices sitting in the front row suddenly leaned back and bumped into the tables behind them with a loud clatter.

Saul, who habitually leaned back, lowered his head, refusing to look at the scene that was making his stomach churn.

The man on the stage was furious. After vomiting, he straightened up and shouted again, "Quiet!"

No one dared to move, even if it was out of disgust.

"First, you need to register as a mentor based on your elemental affinity. My name is Gudo, I'm a poison-type mentor, but I can also teach metal-type. Anyone who has talent in this area, please select me from the form!"

Thor looked down; the table was empty.

Unlike in the movie, this mentor didn't conjure up any forms, nor did anyone appear to distribute them.

He quickly unfolded the books in his arms and began to take notes.

At the same time, a rustling sound came from beside him, as Ke Li took out paper and pen from her backpack and began to take notes.

There were about twenty people in the classroom, and almost half of them had brought their own paper and pens.

Those who weren't prepared wanted to borrow from the people next to them, but didn't dare to speak up, which caught Gu Duo's attention.

On stage, Gu Duo was still speaking, at a very fast pace.

"...First-level apprentices, master the general courses. These include spellcasting, knowledge of all things, meditation, and runes, before venturing into lower-level spells!"

Sol wrote so fast that it was impossible to keep up, so he simply used his own words from his previous life to make simple notes.

"...Don't waste your time, because you don't have time to waste! Level 1 apprentices are assessed monthly, with the first assessment in three months! If the assessor believes you have no potential for improvement..."

Gudo paused here, narrowed his eyes and looked around at the apprentices in the classroom, and said in a gloomy tone, "Then there is no need for you to be trained."

Saul's hand trembled, drawing a single word out as a long tail. He silently started a new line and continued writing.

"...Finally, let me remind you, when you look at the book in front of you, don't think about anything else; that's something only second-level apprentices should be thinking about."

Thor didn't understand this. What did "other" mean? Witchcraft?

"Alright, that's all. I'm leaving." After saying that, Gu Duo turned around and left the classroom, even faster than he had come in.

With the fearsome instructor gone, the students began to discuss the matter, and the classroom suddenly erupted in noise.

Saul didn't participate in the discussion; he stared blankly at the notes he had just taken, as if in a daze.

"Was your left hand born like this?" Claire's voice rang out again.

Thor was in a hurry to take notes, and he habitually pressed his left hand on the book, which was naturally seen by Claire sitting next to him.

Saul didn't hide his hands anymore and said nonchalantly.

"No, it was like the day before yesterday."

Keli frowned and pursed her lips, as if she were stuck on some kind of age-old problem.

At that moment, another young man walked in through the front door of the classroom. He had a smile on his lips and was holding a stack of papers in his hands. He walked to the front desk of the classroom.

"It's 10:50 now, and you've all arrived early, very good! As apprentices, we must make the most of every moment, always early rather than late. Sometimes being on time is a form of being late."

The young man tapped a stack of papers in his hand, his smile fading slightly. "I'll give you the application forms for becoming an instructor and the Wizard Tower's rules booklet first. Instructor Gudo will come to give the first explanation in a little while. Please keep quiet; Instructor Gudo doesn't like noise. Don't ask any questions; just read the booklet. I'll explain again in a bit."

The audience was completely silent.

The young man was very satisfied; this year's apprentices were very obedient, and they immediately quieted down.

He stepped off the stage to hand out forms and manuals, but stepped on something sticky.

The young man looked down, lifted his foot, and saw a severed finger stuck to the sole of his shoe, twitching slightly.

He looked up at the new apprentices again, his lips twitching as he asked, "Master Gu Duo, he...?"

"He's already been here," a girl sitting in the second row whispered.
