Chapter 326 Suffocation
Chapter 326 Suffocation
Thor slowly shifted his gaze, finally fixing it on the center of the first-floor lobby.
Is that it?
Sander turned around and froze on the spot.
"Yes, it's my box, but... why? I just walked right from there."
As he spoke, he strode quickly toward the box, stroked it up and down with both hands, and finally even hugged the entire box to his chest.
Thor was also somewhat puzzled.
This box was definitely not in that place when he came in!
After his inspection, he found neither any hidden mechanisms on the ground nor any supernatural phenomena.
So how did that box suddenly appear?
Is this box special, or is there something unusual about this house that Thor hasn't noticed?
Considering that an apprentice expelled from the Wizard Tower once lived here, and given that apprentices under 30 who are not yet at level three are prone to mutations, Thor is more inclined to believe that there is something wrong with this house.
But when he practiced meditation again and looked over, the house was still clean and tidy.
The half-person-high rattan box was the unclean one.
An ominous gray mist emanated from within, eventually merging with the arm on Sander's neck.
To Saul's surprise, the gray mist deliberately avoided Sander's body, only surrounding him.
It seemed she was afraid of hurting him.
Having confirmed that the gray mist was indeed the resentment of a corpse, Thor raised his eyebrows. "It doesn't seem to be the murder and body-hiding I initially thought."
He originally intended to sign an agreement with Sander and then let him leave with the dangerous wicker case.
Although the other party might be a deranged killer who carries corpses with him, Thor doesn't intend to meddle, and that arm might very well take revenge for him.
But now it seems there's more to the story behind the body's death.
A down-on-his-luck man wanders around carrying a corpse. After losing the body, he repeatedly returns to the terrifying "haunted house" to retrieve it.
A vengeful spirit tightly coiled around the man before her, yet carefully avoided letting its aura harm him.
What is the relationship between Sander and the corpse in the box—or rather, the owner of the arm on his neck?
Thor suddenly became interested.
He held onto the stair railing and slowly walked down the stairs. "What's your relationship with the person in the box?"
Sander, who had been intimately hugging the box, froze. He turned around and looked at Thor, who had already walked up to him. He opened his mouth as if to say something, but in the end, he lowered his head in dejection.
"As expected, you figured it out."
He reached out with trembling hands and placed them on the layers of leather straps wrapped around the rattan box, slowly untying them.
Then, he gently laid the box down and reached out to unfasten the brass clasp.
He took a deep breath and suddenly opened the lid of the box.
Thor looked calmly into the box.
As expected, it was indeed a female corpse.
She looked about twelve or thirteen years old, lying on her side in the box with her arms wrapped around her knees. Her face wasn't particularly pretty, but if she were alive, she could probably be described as cute.
She was wearing a slightly yellowed and faded light pink dress, and had a small gold hair clip on her head.
It looks like a corpse that has just died.
The only unusual thing was that there wasn't a single wound on her body, nor any sign of decay.
Thor's gaze fell on the golden hair clip.
This hair clip, like its owner, is brand new, without any signs of age or decay.
"It must be this witchcraft artifact that kept her body from decaying."
Thor crouched down to examine it closely and discovered that the patterns on the hairpin were indeed a kind of witchcraft symbol, but it was a witchcraft script that he had never seen before.
Seeing that Saul had no intention of touching the female corpse, Sander's tense shoulders slowly relaxed.
He began to slowly recount his story with the female corpse.
The story is actually very simple and quite common.
To prevent his sister from being sold as a plaything to an old man by their indebted stepmother, Sander, the older brother, fled with his sister in the dead of night. However, the old man turned out to be a wealthy and powerful man who even worshipped a wizard.
For some reason, he relentlessly pursued Sander and his sister, even spending money and manpower to track them down.
Young men and women are easily questioned when walking on the street, so Sander specially bought this large rattan trunk so that his sister could hide inside.
Using this clumsy method, they evaded the search.
Everything was going smoothly until he took a boat from the eastern mainland across the bay to Bluewater Bay, the estuary of the bay.
As he disembarked from the boat, some rattling sounds came from the wicker trunk. But since his sister had boarded the boat without a ticket, he didn't dare to move, only patting the trunk to quiet her down.
The box immediately fell silent.
Sander assumed that the commotion was just his sister adjusting her posture because she was uncomfortable sitting somewhere.
But to his surprise, when he quickly disembarked and found a secluded and deserted place, he opened the suitcase and discovered that his sister was curled up inside, motionless, with no heartbeat or breathing... her body was already stiff.
Even though many years have passed, Sander still shed a tear when he talked about it.
The tears fell quietly, silently dripping from the corners of his eyes, rolling over his weathered skin, and landing on the open collar of his faded, yellowed shirt.
Sander skillfully wiped away his tears, then dried his hands on his pants before carefully closing the suitcase.
He would reach out and carefully straighten the woman's skirt and hair to prevent them from getting caught in the box.
"I apologize for making this a laughingstock, sir. This box is worthless, but it contains my most precious treasure."
He even smiled at Thor.
Despite Sander’s efforts to remain calm, Saul could still sense the immense sorrow that had been suppressed for so long emanating from him.
Seeing that Saul didn't seem impatient, Sander couldn't help but pour out some more of his feelings.
"Later I often thought, if I hadn't thought about saving that little bit of money on the boat ticket and had immediately opened the suitcase to check on my sister, would she have survived?"
"I always thought rattan boxes were more breathable, but I didn't expect... Maybe it was a bit hot that day, and there were a lot of people crowding around me, making her uncomfortable. She wanted to change her position to get some fresh air, but because I told her to, she obediently endured it..."
Thor looked at the wicker trunk, now wrapped up again, and asked, "Then why did you put her in the trunk at all?"
"Midor likes... Oh, Midor is my sister, her name is Miska, that's what my mother and I always call her. She doesn't want to leave this box, and she cries as soon as I try to take her out."
"She cries?"
"Yes, sir, I was not lying."
Thor rested his chin on his hand. "Then pick her up and let me see her."
"This..." Sander clearly showed a hint of reluctance, but after struggling for a moment, he still reached out and opened the box.
He feared that if he didn't take action, the wizard would have to intervene personally.
As Sander said, when she gently lifted her sister's head, a tear welled up from the girl's tightly closed eyes.
When Sander lifted the girl's shoulders again, tears streamed down her face like beads from a broken string.
"Sir?" Sander looked at Thor pleadingly, clearly unwilling to lift his sister's body up again.
"Alright, I see. Put her back now." Saul didn't force Sander any further, but after Sander put his sister down, he immediately added, "Your sister didn't suffocate; she was killed by an evil spirit."
