Chapter 269 The Bell Tolls

Chapter 269 The Bell Tolls

Billy gritted his teeth, his face extremely grim. "That tomb array outside isn't a ritual to assist in cursing. It's just bait, a lure to entice anyone with some knowledge of cursing cultivation to step inside."

Seeing Billy so angry for the first time, Angela's expression gradually turned serious. "Is it that dangerous? Even you're not confident?"

Although she felt she had experienced numerous crises during her time away from the tower, Billy had always seemed at ease in each situation before, but never had he appeared so serious as he was today.

Billy turned back as he ran, his complex gaze fixed on Angela, which made her heart skip a beat.

"I will protect you." After saying that, he led Angela onto another road.

Strangely, the sound of the surging tide behind them disappeared as soon as they stepped into the new street.

Billy stopped and glanced back into the alley.

The red water that had been flowing after the two men at the alley entrance also disappeared.

Billy frowned, pondering the reason for triggering the curse, when he suddenly heard Angela exclaim in surprise beside him.

"Sol, what are you doing here?"

Thor had just stepped out of the house where the wandering wizard apprentices lived.

He looked down at the small cloth bag he was carrying and sighed inwardly.

"There are indeed some Sound Grinding Fruits in stock here, but unfortunately most of them have rotted. I only managed to get about ten after picking and choosing. As a result, if we want to conduct long-term consciousness platform experiments, these Sound Grinding Fruits can only last for two sessions at most."

There may be other places where the stock is stored, but Saul cannot stay in the town indefinitely.

He hadn't forgotten the death warning he'd given in his diary earlier.

The longer you stay and the more places you explore, the more likely you are to accidentally "stumble into the background".

"Anyway, I've already gotten some. Maybe after two more experiments I can completely turn the diary into my locator. Now I should think about how to get out of here. I wonder where Mochi Mochi has gone." Just as Thor was thinking this, he suddenly heard a bell ringing.

"Is there a clock tower in this town?" Saul thought for a moment. "I think there is one."

Almost every town has a bell tower like this used to summon civilians, so Thor didn't pay much attention to it last time.

Upon hearing the bell, Thor didn't intend to join the fun. Instead, he ran towards the town gate entrance, away from the direction of the bell's sound.

He wasn't greedy; he came to this place solely to find the Grinding Fruit. Now that he had the fruit, it was time to leave.

As for Mochi Mochi?

The other party may not want to leave.

Now, there should only be him and Mochi Mochi in the town.

The bell ringing just now was most likely caused by Mochi Mochi. And judging from the fact that he deliberately separated from Thor halfway, it's clear that he might not welcome Thor over.

So, without hesitation, Thor left the luxurious residential area and ran straight to the widest avenue in the town center, intending to head towards the town gate along that widest road.

However, as soon as he stepped onto the main road, he saw two people turn out of the alley diagonally opposite.

It turned out to be Billy and Angela.

"How did they get here?" Thor's mind raced.

Before he could make a decision, Angela looked up and spotted Thor.

"Sol, what are you doing here?"

Upon hearing Angela's call, Billy immediately turned his head to look.

He was so focused on analyzing the red tide that he didn't notice there were other people on the street.

However, Billy wasn't as surprised to see Saul as Angela was.

It seems that it's not hard to understand why Thor is here.

Since they had already collided head-on, Thor did not deliberately avoid it.

"I'm leaving here. What about you?" Thor immediately stated that he had no intention of vying for the source of the curse in the town.

The strange phenomena in the town hadn't disappeared. Since Mochi Mochi could tell from the array of graves outside that the source of the curse existed there, then Billy, whose reputation among the third-level apprentices was even higher than his, couldn't possibly not see it.

Billy is a Level 3 apprentice who can drive Gudo to depression.

However, to Saul's surprise, Billy made the same decision as him.

"We're leaving too."

Angela glanced at Thor, then at Billy, and finally stood in the middle, spreading her hands and saying, "That's perfect, let's go together."

In Angela's eyes, Billy was a senior level three apprentice, and Thor was the master's student; both of them were very powerful.

If the town is really as terrifying as Billy says, she'll have a better chance of escaping if she works with these two excellent apprentices.

However, Angela's left hand did not seem as happy as she was.

It nervously clutched at Angela's shirt, looking like the most nervous one there.

Thor was taken aback, not expecting that their goal was not to find the source of the curse.

The latter, with a gloomy face, nodded to Thor, agreeing to Angela's suggestion.

Just then, another bell rang, and the three of them turned to look at it at the same time.

At the end of this avenue, there is a small square, and directly opposite the square is a not-so-tall, old clock tower.

From their angle, they could see the bells at the top of the clock tower swaying.

The bell was attached to a rope, clearly the kind that makes a sound by shaking the rope to activate the bell's tongue inside.

But they did not see the person ringing the bell.

As the bells rang, the sound of the waves once again surrounded Sol like a stereo system.

This time, the sound was closer.

It seems to be nearby!

Thor knew that if he lingered any longer, he would likely run headlong into the red tide.

"Let's go," Thor called out, and immediately ran towards the town gate.

Angela had been keeping an eye on the two of them, and when she saw Saul run off first, she followed without hesitation. She figured that since she and Saul had run away, Billy couldn't possibly stay behind.

Sure enough, footsteps sounded behind her the next second.

The three of them ran wildly, none of them caring about manners at this moment.

Fortunately, after running a few hundred meters, they left the sound of the waves behind.

They retraced their steps back to the town's city gate entrance.

However, the city gate that appeared before everyone was intact, with a nearly two-meter-long square wooden stake obediently inserted into the bolt.

Angela gasped, covering her mouth in surprise. "How could this be? When we came in, the door was clearly corroded. How is it intact again?"

"The gate was intact when you came in?" Thor stared at the city gate as well. "But when Mochi Mochi and I came in, we broke the gate too."

"That's not surprising. Since it's a cage to catch people, the cage door should naturally be locked," Billy said coldly.

As the most capable person present, he did not hold back and went straight forward to try to open the door.

He placed one hand on the city gate and released a pale green gas, just as he had when he entered.

However, the gas that had successfully corroded the door when it entered met with resistance this time.

They hovered outside the gate, seemingly having made contact, but to no avail.

Billy inhaled sharply and suddenly moved closer to examine the gap between his hand and the door.

Then, with a gloomy face, he launched a more powerful corrosive claw attack at the door.

The ghastly green eagle claws slammed down on the door.

However, the gate remained completely still, without even leaving a trace.

After several futile attacks, the Corrosive Claws dissipated in frustration.

Just as Angela was about to say something, she suddenly saw Thor unleash an arrow spell towards the top of the city wall.

But unsurprisingly, the arrow struck an invisible barrier with a "clang," broke in two, and fell into the town.

"Looks like we really are locked in a cage," Thor muttered.
