Chapter 18 Borrowing Money to Develop

"Did he offend someone?" Saul asked.

"I heard he brought with him a book of High Elvish, thinking he could study it once he became an apprentice, but he was found in a flower bed this morning." Claire leaned closer to Thor, deliberately using a low, hoarse voice to scare him. "I heard he cut his own legs into several pieces and buried them in the soil to use as plant roots. When he was found, he almost bled to death."

"Can he still be saved?"

"Who knows? Anyway, it had already been transported away by the time I got there," Claire said with some regret.

"Aren't you afraid?" Thor looked at the ten-year-old girl, Claire, with some surprise.

Claire rested her chin on her hand and murmured, "I knew roughly what the wizarding world was like before I came. It's similar to my home, where people always die inexplicably."

The crazy new apprentice was just a minor incident; Claire quickly shifted the topic to her experience of carrying a bucket to see her mentor, Gudo, the day before.

"...I feel that Instructor Gu Duo is quite willing to teach me, but he just can't control his vomiting. The bucket I prepared for him was almost half a person's height, but it was still full of vomit in less than an hour. I really can't understand how he can eat so much!"

"Ha..." Thor felt both disgusted and amused.

Claire suddenly turned to look at Thor. "You finally smiled. When you first came in, you were like a walking corpse."

Thor's smile faded, and he rubbed his face with his hand.

Did he really look that haggard?

Only the straightforward Cleo would say this.

The instructor responsible for teaching basic knowledge about everything is a level two apprentice.

He was emaciated, with sunken cheeks, and looked more like a corpse than Thor.

He didn't pay attention to interaction during class, and just read the contents of the book in a monotonous tone, making Saul drowsy.

Saul simply opened the book and read it himself.

Because of yesterday's exciting experiences, he didn't have time to prepare for today's lessons.

Basic knowledge of everything is like a hodgepodge of biochemistry, history, and geography.

Anything recorded in a wizarding apprentice's textbook has some magical characteristics.

For example, Thor saw a herb in the plant section that could increase one's magical power.

But the price is that those who consume it become mindless puppets. Rather than helping people increase their magic power, it's more like sacrificing themselves to refine magic crystals for others.

There are ten books in total on the basic knowledge of everything, each ten centimeters thick, so it's impossible to finish reading them quickly.

Thor picked out what interested him to look at, occasionally looking up to stretch his limbs.

At that moment, he saw that Ke Li's two former followers, Doze and Locke, were sitting next to Duke, whispering to each other about something.

Keli, standing to the side, made no comment.

"What are you looking at?" Claire noticed Thor's gaze and followed it, also noticing Dozer and the others' little actions.

She pouted. "They want to isolate you. How childish, like a little kid."

This class turned into a self-study period, and later some people even started learning knowledge from other courses.

The second-level apprentice on the platform simply read the first section of the book aloud, then went off to read other books on his own, completely ignoring the people below.

"No wonder I didn't see many old apprentices in this class; they probably all know they're useless," Claire muttered, regretting that she hadn't brought any other books.

"Claire, could you lend me some magic crystals?" After hesitating for a long time, Thor finally mustered up the courage to ask Claire.

"What do you need the magic crystals for?" Claire looked over warily. "I don't do one-way deals!"

"I'd like to borrow two books from the library."

"Someone just went crazy from reading random books, aren't you afraid?"

Saul said sincerely, "I won't read randomly, but I really need some special books right now."

Claire didn't ask Saul what book he wanted to read. After hesitating for a moment, she poured out five black, semi-transparent diamond-shaped pieces from her purse.

"I can only lend you five, you have to pay me back in three months...pay me back..."

Ten.

"make a deal!"

Do I need to write an IOU?

"certainly!"

Saul tore a page from the blank book, and the two made their first monetary transaction.

After the first lesson, the second lesson was the rune construction that everyone was eagerly anticipating.

Rune construction is the foundation for performing witchcraft.

To everyone's disappointment, the instructor for this class was still only a level two apprentice.

This guy went even further, only explaining the most basic rune drawing once before telling everyone to practice on their own.

Many newcomers only partially understood the explanation and wanted him to repeat it, but he would charge them for it!

When Saul heard that money was involved, he simply gave up.

He recalled the points he had just been taught, and feeling that he remembered and understood them clearly, he began to draw the first basic rune in his mind.

With his eyes closed, the first basic rune was clearly imprinted in Thor's mind.

He opened his eyes, stared blankly for a moment, somewhat incredulous.

"I think I've... memorized it?"

To prevent his eyes from remembering the words but his hands from not doing so, Saul wrote them down on a blank sheet of paper.

He opened the book and compared the runes he had written with those in the book.

It's exactly the same!

Even the curvature of each line is the same!

Thor closed the book and tried again. This time, he used a special pen and ink, and following the instructions of the lecturer on stage, he began to channel his magic into the pen tip.

This time, I found it a bit difficult to put pen to paper.

Magic power should be output evenly and combined with mental power manipulation to construct a basic rune.

If any step in this process is not done properly, the rune will disintegrate, its magic power will be rendered ineffective, and it will become just an ordinary pattern on a blank sheet of paper.

Thor was completely focused.

then,

It worked!

Although it was only drawn on ordinary white paper, the surface of the runes shimmered with iridescent light, and the magical fluctuations emanating from them were clearly perceptible.

"You, you succeeded?" Claire murmured, her eyes wide.

She had originally intended to spend some money to listen to the explanation again, but seeing that Thor had succeeded on his first try, she suddenly felt that she could probably do it herself if she studied it a little more.

Thor didn't notice Claire's voice; his gaze had already shifted to the next basic rune.

the second.

success!

Great success!

The third.

success!

the fourth.

……fail.

Thor frowned.

This failure was not due to a mistake in his memory of the runes, but rather because he lacked sufficient magic power.

Is it possible that my magic power can only last for three runes?

Or is there a problem with the way he outputs magic?

Thor finally realized the dangers of insufficient magic.

No wonder Kongsha felt she had her figured out, no wonder mentor Kaz didn't even want to look at her.

Thor's chest heaved violently a few times before finally calming down.

"What's the panic?" he said to himself. "Didn't you already make up your mind?"

Thor took out the crystal ball and the diagram of the humanoid creature's movements, and began to meditate to restore his magic power.

Having less magic power also has its advantages; it recovers faster.

We must learn to view things dialectically.

Thor's successful creation of three runes had already attracted the attention of the entire class.

Not only the new apprentices, but also the veteran apprentices and even the second-level apprentices on the platform were shocked by the series of magical fluctuations from Thor's side.

Several newcomers who were even planning to pay a hefty sum to be taught by a second-level apprentice suddenly stumbled and prepared to ask Thor for guidance.

However, these people began to hesitate after seeing Thor simply draw three runes and begin to meditate.

Could it be that the newbie has some issues with their rune setup? Besides, you can't just go up and interrupt their meditation, can you?

Duke, who was in front, rolled his eyes, turned around and said something to his two companions, then picked up his rune and rushed to the podium—every apprentice who came from outside had some magic crystals on him.

The second-level apprentice on the podium seemed very pleased that Duke had approached him first, and he spoke to him at length in a low voice, which made the group of newcomers in the audience extremely envious.

Duke would always cooperate by showing an expression of sudden realization or understanding.

Angela, sitting on the edge of the classroom, slowly slid her adorable big eyes from the podium to the back of the classroom, finally landing on Thor with an interested expression.
