Chapter 158 Soul-Guiding Oil Lamp
Chapter 158 Soul-Guiding Oil Lamp
Thor slowly clenched his teeth.
This chilling truth made it hard for him to breathe. But deep inside, a voice told him that this was how the world should be.
Winnie didn't seem satisfied with how much the truth had affected Thor. She moved closer to him again, her shadow leaning forward and lingering near his ear.
A soft voice rang out, "Do you know how many years Gorsa has been stuck at the peak of the second tier?"
"If you don't understand what that means, let me give you an example. Do you know why someone who hasn't advanced to level two of the third-level apprenticeship by the age of thirty will be expelled from the tower?"
"Why did the wizarding tower let them leave instead of exploiting them to death?"
"Because those who remain at the peak of their level for too long will have their knowledge continuously corrupted by the unknown forces above. Leaving those second-level apprentices in the tower will eventually corrupt them and turn them into monsters. You work in the morgue, so you should know that corrupted items are destined for the junkyard. Even someone as powerful as Gorsa wouldn't risk using them."
Thor vaguely felt a sweet breath on his cheek, but after the sweetness came extreme bitterness.
Winnie continued, "You said Gorza... isn't he becoming more and more like a monster?"
Thor finally couldn't help but take a big step back, his back hitting the table, the pain and fear making him gasp for breath.
"Heh...heh..."
Thor couldn't help but wonder, if the tower master turned into a monster, how many people would be left alive in this wizard tower?
Just as Saul was engrossed in the terrible future Winnie had described, a gentle voice suddenly rang out at the doorway.
"Yura, don't scare Thor."
Thor and Winnie turned their heads at the same time and saw Gorza, wearing a reddish-brown cloak, walking gracefully from among the corpses.
The corpses would automatically move aside as Gorsa passed by, and would return to their original positions after Gorsa had passed.
When Gorza reached Winnie and Thor, he opened his arms, lifted his cloak, and revealed his body wrapped in pink bandages.
"Come back."
Winnie's shadow remained stationary.
But Gorsa was very patient with her and said again, "Come back...be good."
Winnie then glanced at Thor, her red eyes revealing nothing of her thoughts.
She walked over, opened her arms and embraced Gorsa, then, like raindrops falling on a lake, she merged into his body and disappeared.
Thor snapped out of his daze, and as Winnie turned to look at him after leaving, he seemed to see a beautiful yet aloof woman's face.
Gorza withdrew his hand, and with a gentle sway of his wide cloak, he once again completely covered his body.
He lowered his head and whispered to Thor, "Don't worry about what Yura said, especially the part about resurrection. I'll tell you about it when you advance to level three."
Thor couldn't help but step forward. "Tower Master, was that spirit just now really Lady Yura?"
Gorsa nodded. "It's her."
He chuckled softly. "Did she tell you she was just a copy, and even named herself Winnie?"
Thor didn't know how long his conversation with Winnie had been overheard, but there was no point in hiding it, since Winnie herself had been absorbed into his body.
He nodded.
"She's always like this. When she's happy, she says she's Yura; when she's unhappy, she says she's Winnie." Gorsa's eyes crinkled, but quickly dimmed again. "I've tried my best to preserve the integrity of her consciousness, but when I was replenishing Yura's soul energy, she was still somewhat contaminated by the outside world. So her perception has also been affected."
"There's no way to deal with it for now. Consciousness is even more fragile than the soul. Sometimes, a trivial external shock or a change in one's own thoughts can cause great harm to consciousness, pushing it from one extreme to another."
Gorza extended his right hand from under his cloak, holding an old, rusty oil lamp with a thin layer of oil still inside.
"The body is the foundation of the soul; don't play games where your soul leaves your body."
Saul paused for a moment, then reached out and took the oil lamp.
The oil lamp was so small that he could hold it in one hand.
The wick is a tiny, thin wire that is burning steadily.
Did the Tower Master realize that his soul had left his body? Or did Winnie, who was always by his side, tell the Tower Master?
"I don't know why it suddenly left my body last night. It gave me a fright, but thankfully I got back in time."
Saul offered an explanation, attempting to show that he wasn't intentionally seeking death.
"Keep this soul-guiding oil lamp with you at all times. Add a few drops of blood from your fingertips and saliva to the oil. If your soul leaves your body again, it will help you return."
Thor gripped the oil lamp tightly, so did the tower master believe that the phenomenon of the soul leaving the body could still occur?
"Thank you. But do you know why I'm in this situation?"
"You already have a guess in your heart, right? Go and verify it, instead of listening to what others say."
Gorsa's eyes curved gently again. "If you want to thank me, grow up quickly. At least reach level three before you can possibly help me."
Thor nodded quickly, "Yes, Tower Master, I will definitely try my best."
Gorsa smiled and then abruptly disappeared from Thor's sight.
The huge warehouse is now empty except for Saul, who is the only living person left.
Without the worry of being possessed by an evil spirit, he no longer needed to seek help from others.
Thor, holding the soul-summoning oil lamp, walked back to the table and sat down.
He was lying face down on the table, his arms wrapped around his face, so no one could see his expression.
Before 3 p.m., Thor moved all his experimental materials from the morgue on the second floor of the East Tower to the storeroom on the first floor of the East Tower.
He then took advantage of his lunch break to visit Byron, intending to transfer the contribution he had earned from exchanging the sailboat to Byron as a way of repaying the debt of saving his life.
Unsurprisingly, Byron accepted Saul's gift without hesitation.
"When did you get back?" Byron calculated his due share and returned some credits to Saul.
"Actually, I came back yesterday," Thor said with a wry smile.
Byron glanced at Thor, but assumed that Thor hadn't returned to his dormitory after going back to the tower, and was with the tower master, so he didn't ask any further questions.
"What are you planning to do about Wright's situation?"
Thor knew what Byron meant and said with a smile, "What he did back then was actually the norm in the wizarding world. It was you who came back to me, senior, that really surprised me."
"I only acted because I was fairly confident." Byron said calmly, not finding his actions particularly surprising. "If you die, I'll run away immediately and won't avenge you."
Thor shook his head. "Don't you even appreciate the life-saving grace you received, senior?"
"I only offered some assistance; you survived on your own. As for that favor..." Byron raised the ledger in his hand, "It's settled."
Thor smiled obediently, saying that there was no need to constantly talk about favors.
"By the way, where does Wright-senpai live?"
Looking at Saul's seemingly innocent smile, Byron silently mourned for Wright in his heart, and then unhesitatingly gave out Wright's dormitory number and the laboratory he frequented.
The intelligence was extremely detailed.
But Thor didn't go to Wright; there was no rush.
He took advantage of the little time he still had and moved house.
Keli from next door hasn't come back yet.
He was somewhat disappointed, but this was the normal pattern for missions; no one else would return in just a few days like him.
With no time to rest, Thor exchanged some items he needed and returned to the second warehouse.
……
While Saul was busy, news had already spread among the senior apprentices that he had replaced a third-level apprentice as the warehouse manager.
On the twelfth floor of the East Tower, there is a free activity room specifically for three levels of apprentices to exchange ideas.
There aren't many people here usually, but most level-three apprentices who return from missions will come here for a stroll.
They would share their experiences and observations from the outside world, or inquire about any new news from inside the tower.
Today, the door to the activity room was pushed open again, and three people walked in from the outside.
Two men and one woman.
The first man was arrogant, the second was sinister, and the third woman wore a large hood that covered the upper half of her face, revealing only her fair-skinned, beautifully shaped chin.
There were only two people talking in the activity room, but they stopped talking as soon as they saw the three people enter.
They exchanged a glance, and one of the women stood up and walked towards the person who had entered.
"Billy, I heard your brother Bill died on this mission."
The man with the sinister expression looked up and replied indifferently, "Oh."
