Chapter 155 A New Job

Chapter 155 A New Job

Because of the embarrassing algae, Saul stayed in Professor Rum's lab for another ten minutes before leaving.

When Xiaozao first appeared from behind his neck, Thor even wondered if the spirit had possessed Xiaozao.

But seeing Xiaozao's subsequent behavior, well... he felt he could rule out that option.

Before leaving, Nick told Thor that Byron had already collected his share of the mission reward on his behalf.

Saul can go to Byron's dormitory anytime to ask him for it.

Since Thor was only a level one apprentice when he accepted the mission and was only registered as an assistant, Byron could easily collect his share of the mission rewards on his behalf.

Even if it's not returned to Saul afterward, the registry office won't care.

But this was actually the thing Thor was least worried about.

Byron had helped him more than once, and had even saved his life twice. Thor wouldn't care even if all those favors went to Byron.

Moreover, the biggest gain from this mission was with Thor.

The knowledge of two third-level apprentices and one second-level wizard is all kept in the diary.

Even if they lost some of their memories due to death, what remained was still a vast knowledge base for Thor!

Thor has accumulated a considerable number of soul fragments this time, so there's no need to worry that the consciousness preserved in those three black papers will quickly dissipate due to insufficient soul energy.

For wizards, nothing is more important than knowledge.

The excitement of his harvest made Thor temporarily forget the trouble of having a shadowy figure following him. He went to the registration room to change his name tag and then went to the morgue on the second floor of the East Tower.

Before leaving the tower, he informed his mentor, Kaz, that he might be gone for two months.

Since Byron was also an apprentice of Kaz, he wasn't angry that Thor was going to temporarily put aside his work in the morgue. He simply went to the newcomers who had entered the Wizard Tower in the last two years and selected someone to temporarily replace Thor.

Now that Saul has returned ahead of schedule, he naturally has to take over the work again.

Thor thought there would be no one in the morgue at this time of morning, but when he pushed open the scarlet door of the morgue, he saw two figures standing in the middle of the morgue.

Chrome, a newcomer who had only been in the Wizarding Tower for a year, was dancing while pulling a female corpse that was a head taller than him.

The two were neatly dressed and moved in unison, completely absorbed in their performance despite the lack of music.

If the woman hadn't been headless, Thor wouldn't have been able to identify the guest.

"Krom," he said, breaking the pleasant atmosphere.

"Ah, Thor-senpai." Chrome, with her red curly hair, stopped dancing, showing no embarrassment at being caught, and greeted Thor with a smile.

He told the female guest to take off her long dress and lie back on the conveyor belt.

"Is this your witchcraft?" Thor had never seen witchcraft like this before, and it didn't seem like the kind of witchcraft a first-level apprentice could master.

Chrome, like a shy big boy, scratched his nose. "Actually, it's a magical trick, plus a bit of my talent."

The gorgeous long dress fell to the ground and turned into an old bed sheet.

"Talent?" If it's just magical skill, Thor could do that easily too.

But to make a corpse obey commands and move so flexibly is something that level 1 or 2 sorcery cannot accomplish.

"Companion Fairy".

An old, slightly hoarse voice sounded from behind them. The two turned around at the same time and saw their mentor, Kaz, walking in with his hands behind his back.

"Such talent is rare; it's said to be a blessing from fairies at birth," Kaz said with a slight smile. "Of course, some say it's a curse."

Even upon hearing the word "curse," Chrome's obedient expression remained unchanged.

Thor was somewhat interested in companion fairies. "Companion fairies, I think I've seen them in some book before."

"Companion fairies are transparent fairies that ordinary people cannot see. They are small in size and live between reality and fantasy. The weak ones can only slightly affect reality, while the strong ones can pull people into the fantasy world." Chrome took the initiative to explain the meaning of companion fairies to Thor.

He then stretched out his hand, held it up in front of Thor, and said with a smile, "This is my companion fairy, Thor-senpai. Isn't she cute?"

Looking at his empty palm and the boy gazing at him with genuine sincerity, Thor suddenly understood the meaning of the word "green tea."

Thor's expression remained unchanged; he closed his eyes briefly and then half-opened them again.

This time, a green slime monster appeared in his previously empty palm.

It looks a bit like a slime, but it's anything but cute.

Even though he couldn't smell anything, Thor felt as if a stench from the sewers was creeping into his nose.

Thor leaned back slightly. "Your taste is quite unique."

The smile on Chrome's face vanished.

At this moment, Katz spoke up, "Alright, now that you, Thor, have advanced to level two, let Chrome take over the work here."

Thor looked at his mentor, Katz, in surprise. "Mentor?"

"Come with me."

Mentor Kaz walked out with his hands behind his back.

Thor turned to Chrome and said, "I'll come back for the things later."

Kurom felt no excitement at having successfully snatched the job.

He stood there blankly, nodding with a pale face, "Okay, Thor... senior."

Thor chased after them out of the morgue and saw Kars heading deeper into the corridor.

Although he had been curious about the depths of the corridor, he had never gone inside.

Only the burly man in charge of cleaning the morgue would push the cart deep into the corridor.

As the two ventured deeper, a darkness that almost materialized gradually enveloped them.

Even the pale candlelight couldn't dispel the surrounding darkness.

As the corridor behind him gradually became less visible, a sense of dread, as if he were about to never return, arose within him.

"We've arrived. This is the first floor of the East Tower." Kaz, the instructor ahead, finally stopped and said quietly.

The first floor of the East Tower? Thor began to doubt his own memory.

Did they come downstairs just now?

"Come stand next to me."

Thor stepped forward as instructed and stood shoulder to shoulder with his mentor, Kaz.

When he stood still, he was astonished to find a large door in front of him.

This is a large door made of a special metal, entirely bluish-black. Even from a meter away, one can feel the chill emanating from the door.

The gate is decorated with a special magic circle with a six-pointed star pattern. At first glance, it looks very similar to the magic circle on the wall of the sixth floor of the East Tower, but its internal structure is much more complex.

"You can only open one door at a time when you pass through. If both doors are open, remember to stay where you are and don't move until the doors close again."

After Kaz finished speaking, he pushed open the right half of the door and led Thor inside.

The temperature inside the gate was several degrees lower than outside.

What comes into view is a corridor about ten meters long, and at the end of the corridor is a metal door, only it is narrower.

As soon as Saul stepped inside, goosebumps rose on his remaining two arms.

He tightened his collar. "Professor, where is this place?"

"You can think of this as another morgue, except the bodies and materials here are unusual."

The two continued forward, pushed open the second metal door, and made no mention of any taboos here.

A thin layer of white mist filled the room behind the metal door.

The room was surrounded by stacks of boxes, identical to those used to store materials in all morgues.

Kaz continued walking. "Does this look familiar? Some of these materials were contributed by you."

"But they could have had more, couldn't they?"

Kaz glanced at Thor, who turned his head away guiltily.

They passed through the second door, where two corridors stretched out in front of them.

"This will be your new workplace. You now have two options: work at the exit or at the entrance."

Katz told Thor that the entrance connects to the third-level apprentice, while the exit usually connects to the mentor.

Thor opened his mouth, but the sound got stuck in his throat.

Level 3 apprentice? Mentor?

If I remember correctly, he has been a level two apprentice for less than ten days, right?
