Chapter 115 The Wizard's Burial Ground
Chapter 115 The Wizard's Burial Ground
Nick arrived in Blacksburg that evening.
As soon as he entered Blackburg, before he could even greet Mochi Mochi, Byron and Thor pulled him into a small dark room.
"Nick, did you have a written mission statement for the task you sent Thor to investigate in Sailtown?" Byron asked directly.
Upon hearing this, Nick immediately lowered his eyes, raised his hands, and decisively surrendered.
"No," he said in a deep voice. "I admit that the mission to conduct the covert reconnaissance was actually issued to Saul by myself."
"Purpose?" Thor stepped forward.
Nick pursed his lips. "Recently, it's become increasingly difficult to obtain Grinding Fruits from the Tower. I inquired about it, and the reason given is that the tribute quantity itself has been decreasing. I originally planned to take advantage of this trip away from the Tower to accept a mission to Sailport Town from Instructor Rum, hoping to secretly obtain some Grinding Fruits. However, something came up halfway through, forcing me to leave. That's why I asked Thor to find out the reason for the reduced production of Grinding Fruits."
He looked up at Saul. "It was a spur-of-the-moment decision, sorry. But I'll give you extra compensation. I wonder if you've figured out the reason, Saul?"
Thor and Byron exchanged a glance and picked up on some facts, saying, "The wizard of Millsail Town is crafting wraiths in an attempt to advance his power. The reduced production of Millsail Fruits is probably being used by him to maintain his sanity."
"A part?" Nick immediately noticed Thor's choice of words.
"The townspeople even traded Grinding Fruit with the barbarians in exchange for the peace of the town."
A hint of confusion flickered across Nick's expressionless face. "Barbarians? Why would barbarians need sound-grinding fruits?"
"Would a barbarian use a 'sound-grinding fruit' to maintain their sanity?" Thor countered.
“No,” Nick shook his head. “Barbarians are obsessed with madness. Even barbarian priests have their own ways of maintaining their sanity.”
Why would a barbarian need a sound-grinding fruit? Or is the barbarian just a facade?
Seeing Thor frown in thought, Nick lowered his eyes again and remained silent.
Byron suddenly asked, "What made you leave halfway through?"
Nick glanced at Byron and didn't hide anything. "My father is dead, and the family is calling me back to sign documents relinquishing my inheritance rights."
This reason is too good to be true and is easy to verify; Saul cannot determine whether Nick left intentionally.
The room fell silent for a moment.
Nick looked at the two silent people, spread his hands, and said, "I'm not sad, don't worry."
Byron suddenly stood up. "In that case, you must transfer your due reward to Thor after you return to the tower."
Nick immediately said, "That's no problem, there's just one reward that a Level 1 Apprentice can't receive, but I can exchange it for him..."
"No need, Senior Nick." Thor raised his hand. "I was forced to advance to level two while fighting the barbarians in Sailtown."
Nick opened his mouth, but the words he wanted to say were stuck in his throat.
After a moment of silence, he suddenly pressed one hand to his chest. "I'm not surprised."
He paused, then tightened his grip on his chest slightly. "I'm not jealous."
"Then it's settled!" Byron declared decisively. "Make preparations tonight, and we'll set off for Drifting Valley tomorrow."
After saying that, he stood up and walked towards the door, but turned back halfway and asked Thor and Nick to leave the room.
That night, Saul lay on his long, narrow bed, which was so narrow he could barely turn over, in his long, narrow room that resembled a coffin, pondering Nick's words from earlier that day.
Based on Nick's explanation, this mission might indeed have been a spur-of-the-moment decision on his part.
After all, the reason that forced him to leave halfway was quite valid.
However, when Saul mentioned that the fields in Sailtown had been destroyed by the savages, Nick did not show the concern he should have.
This behavior is inconsistent with Nick's focus on the Grinding Fruit.
Even though Nick is an extremely reserved person, his level of importance placed on the Sound Grinding Fruit changed significantly over time.
Was Nick trying to send a message to Thor through the Sound Grinding Fruit incident?
He closed his eyes, and faces flashed through his mind...
The next morning, the three of them got up early to bid farewell to the keeper of Blackburg.
Instead of riding in the cramped wizard's tammar, they took the local Blacksburg mode of transport—the wood spider.
When Thor saw the wood spider, he thought he was seeing a giant RV with eight legs.
Because their destination was the Valley of Falling Hands, a place where several warring wizarding factions had once fought. Ordinary people couldn't even approach it, so wizards never brought servants with them.
Large magical artifacts like wooden spiders are their most common means of transportation.
Just be careful while driving, because it's painful to pay for damages.
Thor unloaded his entire set of soul research tools from the carriage.
Nick brought a lot of ropes from the induction chair and some metal rings.
Byron brought some strange parts and several specially made bottles. These bottles were special soul bottles used to store evil spirits.
The soul bottle is fragile to the physical body, but incredibly sturdy to the spirit.
Ordinary evil spirits and vengeful spirits, once captured within, find it difficult to escape.
Thor and Nick are here to assist Byron in capturing the evil spirit.
Incidentally, I'll also take this opportunity to do some of my own research.
The three of them seemed to have forgotten the minor disagreement from the previous night, and appeared to be working together in unity.
Hand-Dropping Valley, once a battlefield for wizards, and a burial ground for their dead.
The reasons for starting the war are unknown, but it is known that too many wizards died in that war, to the point that the wizarding forces in the western region of the Northern Continent were almost completely wiped out.
For a time, it was impossible to find even a second-tier wizard in the western region.
However, this situation did not last long, as many forces in the eastern part of the Northern Continent and the Southern Continent set their sights on this vacuum zone.
After a period of open and covert struggles, a new wizarding force has settled in the western region.
This includes the Wizard Tower of Gorsa.
Therefore, the wizards of the Wizard Tower have a lot of influence in the wizarding world throughout the western region.
Thor and his two companions, who could practically do whatever they wanted as long as they didn't do anything reckless, sat in the wooden spider and slowly approached the entrance to the Valley of Falling Hands.
"Lower Hand Valley is also the entrance to the Wilderness from the West. Since the Battle of Lower Hand Valley, a passage from the West into the No Man's Land has been blocked." Byron sat in the car, pointing out the destination to Thor.
"No Man's Land?" Thor had heard this term in his class on the knowledge of all things, but only from scattered information.
"Yes, it's a place that even formal wizards have to be extremely careful about. I've only heard people mention it occasionally," Nick said from the side.
"It's better not to go there." Byron concluded the discussion about the no man's land.
The wood spider finally reached the vicinity of the Drifting Valley and began to climb down.
Thor could no longer imagine what the Valley of Falling Hands was like, but the entrance here was like an extremely steep slide.
Large swathes of rubble cascaded down the plain where Thor and his companions were.
The angle of descent was almost seventy degrees, like the angle at which a person falls against a wall with their arms hanging limply.
Ordinary carriages cannot travel on such roads, but the eight-legged wooden spiders can climb up and down them just like real spiders.
Furthermore, the wooden spider's carriages can automatically adjust their angle to ensure that the bottom of the carriage is always parallel to the horizontal plane, preventing people inside from rolling around.
As the wood spider crawled down, Thor saw a valley nestled between two high mountains.
A gust of wind blew by, carrying with it the lingering stench of blood that hadn't dissipated over the years.
The temperature inside the carriage was also decreasing as the altitude dropped, and Saul unconsciously tugged at his sleeve.
"Don't be nervous," Nick reassured Thor. "The real battleground of the Wizarding War is deep within Handle Valley. We're only capturing evil spirits on the outermost edge; we won't encounter too much danger."
Byron was also looking out the window, searching for a suitable campsite.
Hearing Nick's words, he nodded and hummed in agreement.
Saul, however, secretly glanced at the diary.
Upon entering this valley, Thor always felt a tingling sensation throughout his body.
It was as if countless people were watching him.
"It must be..." Thor tugged at his collar to get a better breathing fit, "...or is it just my imagination?"
