In the Apocalypse, I Can Enter Hogwarts
Chapter 89 Transformation Lesson
Chapter 89 Transformation Lesson
……
After leaving the Defense Against the Dark Arts classroom, Ian rushed to the location of the next class.
He hadn't lied to Tom; the changes to Charms class had indeed made his schedule a bit chaotic. Many classes were back-to-back, giving him a rushed feel.
……
Soon they arrived at the Transfiguration classroom on the fourth floor of the castle. Unlike the gloomy and dark Potions classroom in the basement, this place was a much better location in terms of lighting, ventilation, and views.
Ian always looked forward to the courses he liked, and the Transfiguration course happened to be one of the best.
He loved the feeling of doing whatever he wanted and having his wishes fulfilled. Every time he cast a transformation spell and waved his wand, the effortless and unrestrained feeling always captivated him.
This is what he envisioned a wizard to be like: elegant and mysterious, not the kind of turret mage who stands still and deals damage.
After finding an empty table to sit down, Ian listlessly fiddled with his wand. As for reviewing the textbook? To be honest, that "Elementary Guide to Transfiguration" wasn't helping him much.
The reason Ian chose to continue taking first-year courses was because of Professor McGonagall's fondness for young wizards. She would patiently share her insights and techniques on transfiguration in every class, and Ian found it hard to give up such generous teaching.
While he was lost in thought, Professor McGonagall appeared outside the classroom door. Unlike Snape, who would arrive just in time, she always arrived five minutes early. This responsible witch was always meticulous about her work.
And unlike Professor Flitwick, she didn't sometimes use class time for other things. In Professor McGonagall's eyes, nothing was more important than teaching diligently. Of course, aside from student safety.
Always decisive and efficient, always dashing and heroic. Professor McGonagall walked in with a brisk pace and a serious expression, then stood silently on the podium with a stern face.
Ian was extremely grateful that Hogwarts had such a woman as Vice-Headmaster; otherwise… relying on Dumbledore? Heaven knows what Hogwarts would have become. And the heads of the other three houses—none of them were reliable. It wasn't that they were bad, it's just that some…
"Good afternoon. Now please turn to page 156 in your textbooks. You will have 5 minutes to review today's lessons. I will ask you random questions... If you can't answer, your homework will be three inches longer today."
Professor McGonagall was a skilled teacher; she knew the habits of these energetic young wizards very well, so she didn't expect them to preview the textbooks. She deliberately set aside five minutes at the beginning of each class, at least enough for the students to get a basic understanding of the day's lesson.
"What a thoughtful gesture..." Ian thought to himself, admiring the witch's dedication, while also diligently opening his textbook and flipping through it.
Being able to use something doesn't mean you can explain the theory. He didn't want to be called on to ask some obscure questions. If his answer was unsatisfactory, having to do more homework would be a minor issue compared to the huge embarrassment, especially since he was the oldest student there...
In fact, the transformation magic in the first year is really simple. The entire teaching content of the school year is all about transforming inanimate objects into inanimate objects, with only differences in size and complexity.
……
"Very good, I'm pleased that you were able to read attentively. As the textbook just stated, today's lesson is about a teapot transforming into a clock. This lesson is very important because it's the first time you've encountered an object that can transform and move. More importantly, the content of this lesson is directly related to the transformation of living things in the future..."
Professor McGonagall spoke in a lighthearted tone from the podium, while simultaneously writing down various key points on the blackboard.
……
"Now you can try practicing on your own first." After saying that, Professor McGonagall waved her wand, causing the teapot that had been prepared beforehand to float steadily onto each student's desk.
"The most exciting moment of this class has arrived..." Ian looked around expectantly.
No wonder he was so interested, because you never know what bizarre and unusual things these little wizards would conjure up... Each one was a new surprise.
Unlike Ian's curiosity, Professor McGonagall's facial muscles twitched slightly as she suppressed her anger while watching the circus-like performance in the classroom. Suddenly, as if she had found an outlet, she stared intently at Ian and said:
"Mr. Titus, I think you should be practicing your Transfiguration right now, not sitting there watching the show..."
The moment his eyes met Professor McGonagall's, he knew he was in trouble. This witch in charge had been suppressing her anger the whole time. Ian quickly backed down: "Okay, Professor, I'll practice right away. I was just a little distracted..."
Professor McGonagall looked at Ian's obedient and serious expression, which made her unable to vent her anger. She could only turn her head to the side, hoping to find another unlucky child.
"Hannah Abbott..."
Finally, all her hard work paid off, and Professor McGonagall found a typical example... Unlike other people's Transfiguration, which, no matter how exaggerated, was related to clocks, Hannah's Transfiguration object was simply a crude humanoid doll.
"Miss Hannah, I remember you repeatedly emphasized the fundamentals of Transfiguration from the very first lesson. So, stand up and tell me, what are the fundamentals of Transfiguration?"
The little girl stood up somewhat unsteadily: "It's about concentrating...Professor McGonagall."
Asking questions and then offering criticism should be a habit for every teacher.
After hearing Hannah's answer, Professor McGonagall finally found her chance. She said somewhat sternly, "So, your attention is focused on the doll? What are you thinking? Haven't you grown up yet?"
Perhaps seeing the little girl's tearful expression, Professor McGonagall had no choice but to change the subject and loudly address the others:
"Concentration is a must for beginners when practicing Transfiguration. Now I'll tell you something else: when transfiguring complex objects, you must start with your first impression of the object, and then slowly fill in its entire shape in your mind... It must be done this way."
"Definitely valuable information..." Ian couldn't help but give Professor McGonagall a mental thumbs up. In fact, with his level of Transfiguration, he had already surpassed the current course content.
He had previously inquired about Ivy's Transfiguration class in the third year, and the answer was that Professor McGonagall, starting in the third year, would no longer teach too many techniques and insights, but would focus more on textbook theory and the key points for the exam.
This is why he was reluctant to return to the third-year curriculum.
Many of the fundamental skills and insights that Professor McGonagall shared in the early grades' Transfiguration classes cannot be learned simply by reading books.
"Mr. Spender, you were laughing quite happily just now? Now tell me, what was your first impression of clocks... Hannah, please sit down and pay attention to the lesson."
Professor McGonagall perhaps felt that Hannah wasn't a suitable target, so she had to choose another lucky one, and clearly one with a high tolerance for hardship...
……
Ian lost interest in the performance that followed; after all, even the most interesting things can become boring after a while.
He was now diligently taking notes in his notebook, recording Professor McGonagall's explanation: "Transfiguration is based on the first impression of an object."
……
The second half of the lesson gradually came to an end amidst Professor McGonagall's various harsh criticisms.
Just as Ian was packing up to leave the classroom, Professor McGonagall suddenly called out to him, "Ian, wait a minute..."
