Chapter 6 The Wolf School
Chapter 6 The Wolf School
Wayne smiled modestly, took a sip of the juice Geralt had brought back. It was sweet and sour with a hint of the raw ingredients' bitterness; the taste was quite good.
Although White Wolf may seem a bit expressionless, he is indeed a kind-hearted and righteous person.
When he was buying supplies for the castle, he remembered the children inside and specially spent money to buy them some juice. Unfortunately, now, they don't need that much anymore.
At the dinner table, Vesemir and Geralt were both quite talkative, and they discussed the current situation in the North.
However, at this point in time, Nilfgaard has not yet launched its first invasion, and the situation in the north is still a chaotic quagmire with no major battles but constant small-scale conflicts.
The dozen or so kings of the entire north would occasionally engage in small-scale battles over trivial gains, or even over the ownership of one or two villages.
They leave behind a few corpses, plunder one or two villages, and then sign various agreements.
The chaotic kinship among medieval nobles, along with various alliances and betrayals, conspiracies and schemes, left the entire north in a state of near chaos.
Neither Vesemir nor Geralt were interested in the power struggles among the kings; their conversation was more about identifying areas of war.

Because monsters usually roam freely after war, and in places where monsters roam freely, monster hunters are usually needed.
In this day and age, the life of a witcher is not easy. Not only is most of their work dirty and tiring, involving constant danger and risking their lives, but when they are not working, they often go hungry and suffer from deception, discrimination, and insults from unruly people.
In other words, most Witchers are good people who follow tradition and have principles; otherwise, their swords would have taken the lives of countless scoundrels.
Soon, the two began discussing Geralt's experiences over the past year. Facing his mentor, Geralt didn't hide much and simply recounted the missions he had received throughout the year.
Wayne listened quietly, thoroughly enjoying himself, his longing for the outside world growing stronger. However, as a Witcher apprentice, Vesemir would not allow him to graduate until he had learned all the knowledge and passed the Witcher's exam.
Geralt downed another large gulp of strong liquor, his eyes glazed over as he stared at the dishes on the table. Only when he returned to Kaer Morhen Castle could he relax like this.
He let out a hiccup and spoke to Vesemir as if confiding in him:
"This year, while fishing by the river with a bard friend, we caught a magic lamp."
"It actually granted three wishes."
"I suspect it was a spirit that was sealed inside an oil lamp."
"I was prepared to stop my friend from making a wish, but I was too late, and he got hurt."
Upon hearing this, Vesemir was also very interested.
"What happened next?"
Di Jing is a very rare and powerful elemental spirit. There are not many records about them, but each one is very magical.
Most witchers will never encounter such a thing in their entire lives.
Geralt took another sip of his drink, his eyes somewhat unfocused, as if he were thinking of someone.
As Wayne, who has read the original book, knows, it was that encounter that led Geralt to meet his destined love, Yennefer. The legendary white wolf fell in love with the sorceress, falling head over heels for this eccentric woman at first sight.
The two embarked on a decades-long, on-and-off romance, filled with dramatic ups and downs that defy description. Ultimately, in The Witcher 3, the ending of their love story will be left to the players to choose.
Geralt sighed, intending to confide his romantic troubles to Vesemir, when suddenly all three at the table heard two more footsteps and the sound of two men arguing outside the castle hall.
A somewhat high-pitched voice, tinged with complaint, said:
"I told you long ago, we should have set off earlier."
"It's all your fault for dawdling. You made us travel in the dark, and we even ran into a horde of evil spirits on the way. Now look what's happened, we're covered in shit, and there's definitely no hot water for a bath in the castle."
No sooner had that voice fallen than another deep voice retorted:
"Stop babbling, Lambert. Are you some kind of young master from the city?"
"You can't even stand this little bit of flavor? I've listened to you nagging the whole way."
The man called Lambert wasn't about to shut up so easily; he spoke without any hesitation:
"We're witchers, not water ghosts or carrion monsters. We can't spend our days soaking in shit."
"You like this taste, but I don't."
Upon hearing this foul-mouthed, sarcastic voice, Wayne, Geralt, and Vesemir all knew who it was.
Sure enough, a few seconds later, the doors to the castle hall were pushed open, and two witchers dressed in Wolf School heavy armor walked in.
One was a man with short hair and a scar over his eye, Lambert; the other was a square-faced man whose face was almost entirely disfigured by scars, Eskel.
As soon as Lambert entered the hall, he saw Wayne and his two companions dining. The seemingly carefree, buzz-cut witcher glanced at Wayne, then scanned the entire hall, as if understanding something. He turned and spat on the ground, complaining to Eskel:
"Hmph, I knew those kids wouldn't make it."
"We've all been through this, and we know how painful the Grass Trial is for a child."
"We should let those children go down the mountain, instead of forcing them to become witchers."
Eskel, standing beside him, sighed, patted Lambert on the shoulder, and said:
"This is not Mr. Vesemir's fault."
"They were orphans of war, children abandoned by their parents. From the moment they arrived in Kaer Morhen, becoming witchers was their destiny."
Lambert muttered a curse under his breath.
"Bullshit fate."
However, he wasn't blaming Vesemir; he was just somewhat saddened by his own fate. As a child who was given to the Witcher by his alcoholic father due to an unexpected law, he knew very well how painful it was to become a Witcher.
Aiskel patted him on the shoulder, not minding the stench of the evil spirits on him, and put his arm around him as they walked towards the dining table.
Geralt saw the two approaching, a smile creeping across his face, and teased:
"You two look like you just crawled out of a cesspool."
"I could smell the stench from dozens of meters away."
Vesemir's smile widened even more as he looked at his few remaining apprentices and said with a smile:
"Lambert, Eskel."
"Go take a shower first, wash off the dirt."
"After you've finished washing up, let's enjoy the dinner Wayne has prepared, have some drinks, and have a good chat."
"Welcome home, children."
