Chapter 54 The Dwarf Blacksmith
Chapter 54 The Dwarf Blacksmith
Although Wayne was somewhat disappointed that he couldn't get any money out of Revarden using Gwent, Geralt's card skills had improved dramatically under his influence.
With the addition of a Gwent deck he generously sponsored, White Wolf can now be considered a Gwent master.
The two played seven or eight rounds back and forth until the food served was almost cold, at which point they reluctantly stopped.
Geralt was a bit luckier, winning over a dozen Oren and a relatively ordinary card from Revaden, which left Revaden somewhat frustrated.
He wasn't concerned about the small amount of money; rather, he felt a bit disappointed at not being able to get anything out of Geralt, Wayne's companion.
After finishing lunch, the portly businessman wiped non-existent sweat from his forehead, smacked his lips, and remarked with a sigh:
"Sigh! Ever since I ate Mr. Wayne's bear paw last time, I've found it hard to swallow these rough foods now."
"I just wonder when I'll have the chance to taste that delicious food again."
Wayne chuckled. Of course he knew that Revaden wasn't as greedy for food as he claimed. However, as a big businessman, he was quite influential in Vizima. More than a decade later, he even became Princess Yadan's backer.
Wayne didn't mind maintaining a good relationship with such a guy.
So he smiled and said:
"It won't be long, Mr. Rewaden. In a few days, after I move to my new house, I will invite my friends to my house for a celebration dinner."
"I cordially invite you to join this celebration. I will personally cook a delicious feast."
Upon hearing this, Revaden responded with a surprised smile.
"Great, Wayne, I'll definitely be there on time. I can't wait for that day to come."
It must be said that Revaden's expression was so natural and sincere that if Wayne hadn't known his true colors, many people might have been fooled by him.
For example, with Geralt, Wayne could sense that although Geralt didn't consider Revaden a friend yet, he definitely had some goodwill towards this generous and kind merchant.
After some socializing, the three of them finally started talking about the commission.
Revaden's request wasn't actually that troublesome. He spent a lot of money to buy a large forest on the outskirts of Vizima City from the city hall, intending to build a large logging camp there.
However, industries that develop virgin forests often encounter all sorts of wild monsters in the forest.
According to Rewaden, three loggers have been injured during this period, and other workers are also unable to work properly, which has affected work efficiency.
Therefore, he wanted to hire witchers to help him clear the monsters from the forest and ensure the normal operation of the logging camp.
After a conversation, Wayne discovered that it was a long-term and rather leisurely job. He only had to work when there were monsters, and he could slack off when there was nothing to do. He also received a fixed salary every week, which was a dream job for a witcher.
Wayne and Geralt discussed it and decided to accept the commission.
However, a lumber camp does not require two witchers to guard it. The two will take turns guarding the lumber camp, while the other will stay in Vizima to handle the city's requests.
After finalizing the commission, Wayne asked Rewardon another question.
"Mr. Revaden, you have many friends and connections in Vizima. Could you introduce me to a skilled blacksmith? I would like to ask him to forge a piece of equipment for me."
Revaden paused upon hearing this, looked up at Wayne, and after considering for about ten seconds, said:
"You're really lucky, Mr. Wayne. I'm starting to wonder if Lady Luck is truly on your side."
"Just last month, I recruited a group of dwarven lumberjacks. The foreman's father, Mr. Ohunt, is a highly skilled dwarven blacksmith, and is said to be a well-known weapons master among the dwarves of the Coal Mountain in Mahakam."
"I just met him yesterday, had a drink with him, and we've become a little acquainted."
At this point, the portly merchant paused for a few seconds, tapped the table with his index finger adorned with a jeweled ring, and said:
"But as you know, dwarves are mostly eccentric. This Master Ohunt is not short of money. If you want him to forge a weapon for you, I don't know if he would be willing."
"I can write you a letter of introduction, but you'll have to figure out the rest yourself."
Wayne was quite satisfied with the answer, and he nodded, sincerely thanking the person who gave him the reply.
"Thank you, Mr. Rewaden."
After leaving the Kingfisher Inn, the two set off back to the Fox's Tavern. Geralt asked with interest:
"Wayne, what kind of equipment do you want the dwarven blacksmith to forge?"
Wayne glanced at Geralt, patted the steel sword at his waist, and said:
"You can probably guess what I mean. I only have a steel sword right now, not a silver one. I have to borrow your silver sword every time we fight. Wouldn't that be dangerous in an emergency?"
Gerald nodded, but then asked with some surprise:
"Have you saved up that much money? My master-level silver sword was forged in Novigrad and cost me almost a thousand crowns. It took me two whole years to save up that much money."
Actually, Wayne was also having a hard time explaining this. He had been spending money on a new house and forging a silver sword recently, both of which were quite expensive. He and Geralt had been spending all their time together, so he couldn't find a good excuse for where the money came from.
Therefore, Wayne could only vaguely say:
"I made a small fortune there when I defeated the Wild Dogs last time."
"Although it's not enough to cover these two expenses, I'll figure something out later."
Geralt didn't ask any more questions, but instead patted Wayne on the shoulder.
He only had enough money for his own expenses. After his last visit to the Night Queen's Club, he had spent most of it and didn't have any extra money to lend to Wayne.
Back at the Fox Tavern, Geralt had barely settled in when Dandelion came running over again. He whispered a few words in Geralt's ear, and the two of them went out arm in arm.
Wayne could roughly guess what the two of them were planning to do; they were probably going to rescue those women who had fallen into prostitution again.
After Wayne declined their invitations several times, the two of them stopped inviting him to go to those kinds of places.
Wayne wasn't interested in these ordinary women. Since Geralt wasn't around that afternoon, he could finally relax and prepare to open another batch of treasure chests.
Whether it's forging the silver sword or buying a house, he'll need a large sum of money. He currently has less than a thousand Orens on him, and he estimates he'll need at least three thousand Orens to cover the expenses for both.
After greeting old York, who was standing behind the counter, Wayne was about to go upstairs to open the box when old York suddenly spoke up:
"Hey! You little rascal, I've sold all your stuff. Remember to come back here to collect your money."
Upon hearing this, Wayne glanced back at old York and couldn't help but sigh. Local bullies are indeed local bullies; in less than a week, they had disposed of all the stolen goods.
He desperately needs money right now; this is a godsend.
He thanked old York a few times, but old York was ungrateful and instead snorted and said:
"Hmph! Your mother's death anniversary is coming soon. Remember to donate some money to the Melita Church and properly pay respects to your mother."
"No matter what, if she hadn't insisted on sending you to become a witcher, you might have died long ago."
(Thanks to the two generous donors today, and thank you everyone for your support. PS: Your names are all numbers and can't be copied, so I'll be lazy and not write them down. Mwah!)
