Chapter 52 Little Earth Spirit Cub

Chapter 52 Little Earth Spirit Cub

Time passed slowly, and the moonlight gradually dimmed. This was the darkness before dawn, and also the time when humans slept the most soundly.

Just when Wayne thought he was going to return empty-handed tonight.

Whether it was due to his luck or not, his keen vision suddenly spotted a hand that looked like a child's reaching out from the well and clinging to the edge.

Wayne's eyes narrowed; he had guessed correctly—the monster had indeed come out of the well.

However, he did not act rashly, but quietly hid in the shadows, wanting to take this opportunity to see what this monster was up to.

A dozen seconds later, a metal spray bottle was thrown out of the well, and then a small creature with bluish-purple skin, a flower wreath on its head, and a pair of bright, watery eyes crawled out of the well.

Wayne looked closely and, sure enough, he was right. The source of this matter was indeed a small earth spirit, and a rather young one at that.

This discovery allowed Wayne to breathe a quiet sigh of relief. Compared to those demons or other monsters, the little earth spirit was definitely a kind, gentle, peace-loving, and intelligent being.

This is a kind of creature that is shy, intelligent, hardworking, and likes to take care of other flowers, plants, or small animals in its vicinity. It is also known as a guardian spirit by many scholars.

They resemble human children in both behavior and appearance, and like children, they enjoy playing pranks.

When treated kindly, they would secretly help the locals with whatever they could.

When they are treated roughly, they feel offended and will play pranks and magic tricks on the locals.

However, these creatures do not like lively environments. When a village gradually becomes populated, prosperous, and forgets its traditions, they will quietly leave the village and migrate to more remote caves or unknown places.

Recalling the knowledge about the little earth spirits recorded in these books, Wayne quietly watched the little guy's actions from the second-floor window.

This should be a female juvenile earth spirit, with bluish-purple skin and wearing a wet, unidentified animal skin coat. To humans, it looks ugly, but its temperament is quite gentle, giving it a kind of ugly-cute feeling.

After climbing out of the well, she looked around somewhat helplessly. Seeing that no one had noticed her, she carefully picked up the metal spray bottle she had thrown out, looked at the well, and mumbled an unknown incantation.

The metal watering can slowly floated into the air under the power of magic, then descended into the well, and flew out again, filled with clean water.

This scene surprised Wayne. While intelligent creatures like earth spirits do possess some spell-like special abilities, it is quite rare for a juvenile to be able to use magic skillfully.

After using magic to fetch water, the little earth spirit seemed quite happy. She lifted the metal watering can with some difficulty, then wobbled around the house and slowly walked from the backyard to the front garden.

Humming a strange tune, he watered the flowers, plants, and trees in the garden with a watering can, and even picked up a small shovel to help loosen the soil and fertilize the plants, just like a diligent little gardener.

Seeing this, Wayne suddenly realized something.

No wonder the flowers and plants in the garden can still grow so lushly after the owner left; it turns out someone was secretly taking care of them at night.

Although she was only about half a meter tall and had a small, thin body, making it quite strenuous for her to work, Wayne could tell that the little one seemed to be enjoying herself.

About an hour later, the little spirit ran back and forth between the well and the front yard four or five times, until the sun was about to rise, before she finished all her work.

Then, the little guy wiped the sweat from his forehead, put the tools he had used back in their original places, and seemed to be preparing to go back.

As Wayne watched the little guy, clutching the metal sprayer, reluctantly walk towards the wellhead, turning back every few steps, a smile involuntarily crept onto his lips.

He silently climbed down from the second floor and hid around the corner outside the house. Only when the little guy walked past him did he cough lightly and speak:

"Hey! What's your name, little one?"

Wayne's voice clearly startled the little earth spirit.

The little guy trembled upon hearing this, and couldn't help but take two or three steps back. The metal spray bottle in his hand fell to the ground. His big, bright eyes looked at Wayne with some fear, and his whole body was trembling.

Seeing this, Wayne took a step back and raised his hands to indicate that he had no intention of harming her.

However, this little earth spirit cub seemed to be very afraid of humans, even though Wayne acted harmlessly.

She picked up a colorful little conch shell hanging from her chest with her small hand, blew on it gently, and to Wayne's amazement, the little creature's body gradually became transparent and finally disappeared from his sight.

If she were facing an ordinary person, she might panic and think that the little earth spirit had simply disappeared.

But the badge trembling slightly on Wayne's chest, and his keen senses, told him that the little girl in front of him had probably just used some kind of illusion to conceal her form, and her body was still right in front of him.

The most obvious evidence is the little footprints the little guy left on the grass in the backyard as he moved around.

Wayne chuckled softly, gazing at the shifting footprints, and said kindly:

"Don't worry, little one, I'm a demon hunter, but I mean no harm. I just came here to have a chat with you."

It seemed that the word "witcher" caught the little one's attention, and she stopped moving, with a silence that lasted for about ten seconds.

A childish voice came from the air.

"Witchers? You mean people who make a living by killing evil monsters? I've read about these stories in books."

Wayne thought for a moment, then, instead of confirming the statement, explained:

"Yes, but a person's profession cannot change their morality. Even among witchers, there are bad people. Some witchers will kill innocent people indiscriminately, and they don't just kill evil monsters."

The little guy paused for a few seconds, then asked:

"You said you wanted to talk, Witcher, what do you want to talk about?"

This little one seemed quite intelligent, even more so than human girls of the same age. Wayne became interested and said:

"I received information that the owner of this house is constantly being pranked, has nightmares every night, and has even been injured as a result."

"This is a human house, why are you doing this? Why are you driving them away?"

Upon hearing Wayne's words, the little guy immediately denied it, saying:

"No, it wasn't me. It was my brother Fitz. He thought these humans were disturbing the goddess's altar and had to be driven away, otherwise it would be disrespectful to the goddess."

"My father tried to stop him, but my brother was too stubborn and wouldn't listen to his father's advice at all."

"He drove those humans away quietly."

Wayne was taken aback. It seemed he had guessed wrong. The source of this matter was not just a small earth spirit, but a family of small earth spirits, and it even involved the goddess.

"Which goddess is it, little one?"

"Is the goddess's altar nearby?"

The little earth spirit seemed quite naive; after considering for a few seconds, she didn't hide anything and said:

"It is the goddess of the lake. The altar that our family has worshipped for generations is in the cave below this house."

"You humans have built large houses on it, making all sorts of noise every day, driving away the surrounding creatures, and disturbing the goddess's peace."

"That's why my brother was so angry and wanted to kick everyone out of the house."
