Chapter 92 The Room at the End of the Corridor
After Victor finished speaking, Snape remained silent for a full minute. His dark eyes held an incredulous look as he stared intently at Victor.
His eyes clearly conveyed gratitude? Are you sure? Are you crazy?
"Professor Victor, perhaps you should all go to St. Mungo's Hospital for Magical Arts," Snape said sarcastically. "The psychiatric ward is on the sixth floor. That way you'll know whether it's you or Quirrell who's sick."
"Huh? Why did you suddenly attack Quirinas?" Victor tilted his head and asked.
"But what you said makes some sense—it's not normal that his stuttering hasn't gotten better yet; he probably should see a psychiatrist."
Snape's snort almost made his nose crooked from anger.
Victor clearly didn't pick up on the sarcasm in his words. He almost felt like he was insulting the dragon for not being able to swim—the stupid one wasn't the dragon, but the person who insisted on talking to it.
Snape finally took a few deep breaths and said dryly:
"...I have absolutely no interest in any secrets you and Quirrell might have. But I've recently stumbled upon some new evidence—it might prove that the giant monster that rampaged through the school on Halloween was that guy's doing."
"Getting too close to him might get you into trouble and landed in Azkaban too."
Upon hearing this, Victor showed a look of confusion and surprise—specifically, his empty eyes widened slightly by about a millimeter. This subtle change might have been indistinguishable from a blank expression in the eyes of the students.
"He broke the Wizarding Law? I thought you would have reported it to the Ministry of Magic immediately," he said.
"Not for now," Snape said slowly. "I want to hear Quirrell's own explanation—that a troll with only traces of dark magic was released by him, and happened to barge into the school and stop our famous savior—I doubt even someone whose brain was eaten by a winged demon could say such a thing."
"Once Albus returns from the Ministry of Magic tomorrow, these excuses will provide us with a legitimate reason to use the truth serum. All that's left is to send him to Azkaban."
Victor frowned. He suddenly had a peculiar feeling—a feeling exceptionally strong, like the one he had felt many years ago when he first heard the clock strike midnight. It was saying—something was about to happen.
When did Professor Dumbledore leave?
"This morning, an owl from the Ministry of Magic delivered an urgent letter, and he immediately headed to London. I suppose those people at the Ministry of Magic always need some help."
After he finished speaking, Victor looked at Snape.
Snape was looking at him too.
The two stared at each other silently for more than ten seconds, until Victor slowly said:
".—·Urgent letter?"
He and Snape then stared at each other for a moment.
Snape's expression twisted a few times.
"...I think you're overthinking it, Professor Victor. Albus receives letters from the Ministry of Magic a few times a year. They're always sealed with the Ministry's wax seal."
As he spoke, Snape suddenly found himself unable to continue. His face turned pale and then flushed, as if he too was beginning to suspect something, but he couldn't be entirely sure.
Victor just stared at him.
The evening sunlight streamed through the college windows, casting long shadows of the two figures—as long as Snape's silence. He stared at the ground, undecided, unsure whether he should risk being bitten again by Cerberus to check the fourth-floor corridor.
After all, being bitten once was an accident. If he were bitten a second time, those annoying Gryffindor students would start spreading rumors that he loved being bitten by dogs.
But before the two could make up their minds, a small commotion suddenly broke out in the corridor. At the other end of the corridor, Percy, the prefect, appeared abruptly and shouted:
"Has anyone seen George?"
Has anyone seen him?
"Quickly, call everyone over! The spell test is about to begin!"
Percy somewhat anxiously nudged the Gryffindor students, and even seemed to ask a few Slytherins, but without exception, the answer he received was "never seen them before."
"Are you looking for George?" Victor called out to Percy. "He was here when I was taking the divination test. He should have gone back with Lee Jordan by now."
"No, Professor!" Percy's face turned red with anxiety. "I asked Lee Jordan, and he said that George disappeared after just turning a corner and he's never been found since."
"I checked the lounge, the auditorium, and the dorms—he's not here! But if he doesn't come soon, he'll miss his third-year Charms exam! Without a reason, he'll get a T (fail)!"
"Where did he get lost?" Snape asked abruptly.
"Li said it's near the corridor on the fourth floor, Professor, just a little above Professor Quirrell's office."
Percy looked at Snape with some confusion. His cheeks were flushed, even his freckles were red, clearly he had been busy looking for George for a long time.
But after hearing his answer, Snape suddenly turned around and strode towards the steps behind him.
Upon reaching the steps leading to the fourth-floor corridor, Victor finished his conversation with Percy and strode to catch up with Snape. The two walked through the bustling academy, their black cloaks billowing behind them, prompting students to make way for them.
"What are you going to do?" Victor asked.
"Check the fourth-floor corridors," Snape said coldly. "Although I've always advised Mr. Weasley to drop out, I'm afraid he's not stupid enough to forget about the next exam right after it's over."
"So you think something happened to him?"
"It's not just my opinion, it's the facts," Snape said coldly, "especially since the place he disappeared in was such a 'coincidence'."
Halfway through his sentence, Snape suddenly stopped in his tracks.
In the bustling corridor, a small corner near the end was empty, with no students approaching. But once you turned this corner, you could see the door to the room at the end.
The door is now half open.
