Chapter 24. Defense Against Dark Magic
Chapter 24. Defense Against Dark Magic
Cedric is no ordinary person.
He was a genuine Hogwarts champion. During the Triwizard Tournament, the Goblet of Fire would choose him from among many Hogwarts senior students, which meant that he was the most talented and capable young wizard in his sixth and seventh years.
According to Lynn's estimation, Cedric's main magical talents should all be around 5 points, with Polymorph being the most prominent, roughly the same as his Dark Magic talents, at 6 points.
In the morning, Cedric demonstrated his current level of Transfiguration to Lynn.
He transformed a small stone by the Black Lake into a crab that always walks sideways.
Turning inanimate objects into living things—this kind of transmutation magic far surpasses the normal level of a second-year wizard, and he absolutely deserves the title of genius.
Moreover, he is not only talented but also hardworking. If he hadn't encountered Harry Potter, who was a cheat code, his future achievements would definitely have been much greater.
Wednesday morning.
Lynn's most anticipated Defense Against the Dark Arts class arrived as scheduled.
He arrived at the classroom early as usual, and as soon as he entered, he saw Professor Fox tidying up his lesson plans on the podium.
Upon seeing Lynn, he greeted her with a smile, "Good morning, Lynn."
"Good morning, Professor. You're here quite early. There are still twenty minutes before class." Lynn was much less reserved with Professor Fox than with other professors.
Fox didn't treat Lynn like a normal child either; he yawned and waved his hand dismissively.
"After all, it was my first class, and I didn't sleep very well last night." He then looked at Lynn with interest: "As for you, I heard from the other professors that you've been making quite a splash lately. You've earned Slytherin twenty points in just two days since the start of the semester, and several professors have been praising you highly in their conversations."
Lynn raised an eyebrow, showing no humility in front of Professor Fox.
"No matter what, as an investee, you should always demonstrate value commensurate with the investment, shouldn't you?"
Hearing Lynn's words, Fox laughed heartily and said, "That's right, Lynn. To this day, I have never regretted my investment."
"Do you have time this afternoon, Professor?" Lynn asked calmly, looking directly into his eyes without smiling.
Fox's smile faded; he seemed to understand Lynn's meaning.
"I think you must have heard something. You can come to my office anytime; I'm always here. Coincidentally, I also have something similar to discuss with you."
Young wizards were gradually arriving at the classroom. After making an appointment with Professor Fox, Lynn sat quietly in his seat and waited for the class to begin.
"I believe that after two days of study, especially in Professor Flitwick and Professor McGonagall's classes, you have a general understanding of magic."
Professor Fox did not directly address the topic of his lecture in his opening remarks.
"No matter how bizarre, rare, or strange a wizard's magic may be, it can all be categorized into two main types: Charms and Transfiguration Charms. Therefore, these two courses can be considered the foundational courses at Hogwarts. Other courses simply teach you how to recognize, control, and create non-wizarding magical items and creatures, such as Potions, Herbalism, Astronomy, and so on. So, what about our Defense Against the Dark Arts class now?"
Professor Fox's expression wasn't as serious as Professor McGonagall's during class; he smiled and answered his own questions.
"Defense Against the Dark Arts doesn't actually have its own curriculum category. What it teaches can be easily distributed across various subjects. As the name suggests, Defense Against the Dark Arts includes anything that can defend against dark magic, including but not limited to spells, transfiguration charms, potions, herbs, magical creatures, etc., all of which fall under the scope of our course."
Therefore, Defense Against the Dark Arts (DFD) requires a high level of expertise from its professors. Even if they aren't all-rounders proficient in various spells, they must have an extremely high level of knowledge in spells and transfiguration.
The young wizards in the classroom burst into laughter; Professor Fox's words sounded like self-praise.
Lynn's profession was teaching, and he could tell that Professor Fox did this intentionally because many students had complaints about him, so he had to liven up the classroom atmosphere.
And clearly, he achieved the effect he wanted.
"The same applies to you. If you want to get a better grade on the final exam, you will need to put in a lot of effort in this course."
He clapped his hands and straightened his back.
"Alright, now we're going to begin the lesson. The first thing you need to do is... close your textbooks."
Professor Fox was clearly taking an unconventional approach; he stepped down from the podium and crossed his arms in front of him.
"Before we begin the actual instruction, I want to ask you a question. If one day, any of you were alone and suddenly encountered a dark wizard, or some kind of dangerous magical creature, what would be the first thing you need to do?"
Lynn and his classmates were in the same class as Gryffindor, which was arguably the worst of the four houses in terms of their relationship with Gryffindor. Many of the young lions were secretly competing with each other, trying to outshine Lynn in this class.
So, as soon as Professor Fox finished speaking, several Gryffindors raised their hands.
Professor Fox called on a Gryffindor, who stood up looking quite smug and glanced at Lynn a few times, seemingly unintentionally.
Lynn was speechless. It was one thing that he wasn't liked by his roommates in his own college, but now a bunch of freshmen in Gryffindor also had a problem with him.
"Let's duel him head-on!" the Gryffindor boy shouted, as if to demonstrate his bravery. "Knock him down with a spell!"
Fox smiled, but instead of immediately commenting on his answer, he continued to ask.
"So, what kind of spell do you plan to use to defeat him?"
The boys blushed. They had only been learning magic for two days and hadn't even mastered the simplest levitation spell, let alone any offensive magic.
Professor Fox, seeing that he couldn't speak for a while, waved his hand to signal him to sit down.
No one raised their hand in the classroom, and even Lynn listened quietly.
"You may learn many powerful spells in the future and have a bright future, but right now you are just little wizards who have only been learning magic for a few days. If you encounter danger, the first thing you must do is not to think about fighting the enemy head-on, but to raise an alarm and ask the adult wizards around you for help, and then try to buy time and wait for rescue."
"So our first Defense Against the Dark Arts class is to learn how to use warning spells, and the prerequisite for learning this spell is that you must first know how to use the wand illumination charm."
Professor Fox returned to the podium and raised his wand.
"Let me demonstrate for you first. Its spell is: Lumos (flickering light)."
"The Wand Illumination Charm is simple, but it requires concentration. Be careful not to accidentally set your wand on fire, as this could cause permanent damage..."
