Chapter 158, Section 156: Klin Street
Chapter 159, Section 156: Klin Street
Moscow in 1992 was in a state of severe depression.
Few pedestrians on the street wore smiles; they all hurried along, as if rushing home to put out a fire.
The atmosphere here was inexplicably oppressive; people became taciturn, and even when they had to speak, they huddled together and whispered among themselves.
Lynn walked down a street in Mosco, his black wizard robes making him quite conspicuous.
He held a note with the address on it, preparing to first go to the witch named Yelena Shayk to handle the handover procedures of the vault.
He silently counted the birch trees on the right side of the street, and when he reached the thirteenth tree, he secretly tapped the trunk of the tree with his magic wand.
There was no reaction from the surroundings, but somehow, a small alley appeared to Lynn's right. The pedestrians on the road seemed to completely ignore this alley.
Lynn turned right and walked into the alley. After walking for a short while, the view in front of him suddenly opened up.
This is a wide street.
All sorts of magic shops lined both sides of the street, and all the customers walking here were wizards, wizards from the Kingdom of Su.
These wizards mostly wore loose robes, they didn't seem to have the habit of wearing pointed hats, and the wands they held were all unusually thick and long.
Lynn even saw that some wizards' wands had iron plates wrapped around the ends, making one wonder whether they were used as hand guards or to smash enemy skulls when fighting.
This is the largest magical street in the Kingdom of Su—Klin Street.
Its function is similar to Diagon Alley in England, mainly selling magical items and providing leisure services.
However, as the largest street in the magical world of the Soviet Union, it actually seemed much quieter than Diagon Alley.
Only a few wizards were strolling along the street. Just as a child flew out of a shop riding on a toy magic tree, an adult immediately reached out and pulled him back.
An uneasy atmosphere permeated the surroundings.
Not far from the long street, three wizards dressed in deep red robes with a cross of spear and wand pinned to their chests walked together toward the entrance of Klin Street.
As they passed by on the street, some wizards cheered them excitedly, while others looked on with disgust, as if they dared not speak out against their anger.
The three red-robed wizards walked straight up to Lynn. The leader was tall and had a serious expression. He spoke in a deep voice.
"I am Abram Ivanov, captain of the Auror squad under the Magic Law Enforcement Department of the Magical Council of the Soviet Union. Outsider, please prove your identity."
Lynn showed no intention of resisting. He immediately took out the identification document that Dumbledore had prepared for him before he arrived from his pocket and handed it to the Auror squad leader for inspection.
After carefully examining the certificate issued by the British Ministry of Magic, Su Guo Auror nodded and returned it to Lynn.
"Welcome to the Soviet Union, but we are in a very critical period right now. Be careful not to come into contact with suspicious individuals or cause trouble for yourself."
His tone was very polite, but his brown eyes stared coldly at Lynn, making Lynn feel more like he was threatening her.
"I'll be careful," Lynn nodded slightly and said in broken Sukhomlinsky.
He's a newcomer to the Soviet Union, unfamiliar with both people and place, so of course he wouldn't rashly seek out trouble for himself.
After questioning him, the three Aurors from the State of Su walked into the street and searched each shop, as if they were looking for someone.
Lynn stared intently at the backs of the Aurors. The situation in the country was far more serious than he had imagined. He had only been on Klin Street for less than three minutes when he was questioned. Judging from the looks of it, something terrible must have happened here not long ago.
But that was none of his business. The two people he was looking for were officials from the Soviet Magic Committee, and were unlikely to be the suspects they were searching for.
Lynn held the address in his hand and walked along the street of Clyde, looking for a hotel listed on the address, but he walked around the whole street and still couldn't find the hotel's sign.
Left with no other choice, he could only temporarily find a bar to go into.
In contrast, the Leaky Cauldron bar seemed particularly desolate; the huge bar was completely empty except for the bar owner.
When Lynn walked in, the owner, who was idly wiping wine glasses, also seemed quite surprised.
"I didn't expect to have guests today. What would you like to drink?"
Lynn sat down at the bar and looked at the bottles in the cabinet behind it; he didn't recognize any of them.
"I'd like a glass of ice water."
"Ah, so he's a penniless foreigner." The bar owner complained, having overheard Lynn's broken Soviet language. "Even iced water costs money here."
Lynn didn't say anything, but instead threw two Galleons onto the counter.
Wizards' currency is made by fairies; it's hard currency and is used throughout the magical world.
The bar owner, with a thick beard, immediately brightened up. Before anyone could see what he did, he swiftly pocketed the two Galleons and then quickly poured Lynn a glass of ice water.
"What would the guest like to know?"
The bearded boss was certainly not stupid, nor did he think Lynn was stupid. Since everyone was not stupid, then those two Galleons were clearly not for buying ice water, but for something else.
Lynn lightly touched his lips to the ice water, and after confirming that nothing had been added, he took a big gulp.
"You seem to be in a tense situation here lately. Has something happened?"
He didn't ask about the address; instead, he inquired about the situation in the magic world of the Soviet Union.
The bearded man sighed twice, sounding somewhat wistful.
"Are you here for tourism? If so, you've come at a really bad time. Just two days ago, a group of rebels attempted to attack the Magic Council headquarters and assassinate several important officials. They were eventually defeated by the Aurors. Most of the rebels were captured, but some are still on the run. The Aurors of the Magic Council are hunting them down."
This is a big deal, just like when someone stormed the Capitol in the United States and attempted to assassinate the Speaker of the House and the President.
Uh... it doesn't seem like a big deal.
"Who are those rebels? How could they have such audacity?"
"Who else could it be?" the bearded man said dismissively. "They're probably all those Chur tribe shamans."
