Chapter 155, Section 152: I'm at ease leaving Tom in your care!

After Lynn and Dumbledore reached an agreement, their relationship seemed to become much closer. After chatting about some trivial matters, just as Lynn was about to get up to leave, Dumbledore suddenly called him back.

Lynn sat back down in his chair, puzzled, and watched as Dumbledore pulled a familiar-looking ball from his drawer.

It's Tom.

Tom's spirit was still clearly visible inside the transparent sphere created by the Soul Sealing Spell, but he remained silent, as if he were asleep.

"I have carefully examined his existing memories and confirmed that he only retains memories from before the age of eight; those after the age of eight have all disappeared," Dumbledore said.

"No, his current state is actually quite peculiar. We generally believe that a person's soul is composed of his memories. A person's memories are the entirety of that person's consciousness. The most basic memories include drinking water, eating, talking, walking, and even feelings towards others are a kind of memory. Tom's soul is missing a large piece. What exists now is only the part of his soul before he was eight years old, or you could say his memories."

Dumbledore is a master of Legilimency, and his research on human memory is undoubtedly the best in the magical world. If one were to doubt him, then probably no one in the entire magical world could diagnose Tom's soul.

Lynn had some guesses about Tom's current condition.

What he initially used to trap Tom with the Soul-Sealing Curse was not his soul, but a substance that was somewhere between a physical body and an intangible body. The reason he was able to escape later was that he used that small part of the physical body to wrap his soul and break free from Lynn and the others' modified Soul-Sealing Curse (Note).

Tom was able to escape because he still possessed a small part of his physical body, but it was also this small part of his physical body that allowed Lynn's killing curse to take effect on him.

The soul that escaped first undoubtedly contains Tom's most important memories, while for Voldemort, the most important memories are those from his time as the Dark Lord.

Then Lynn's Killing Curse killed the part of Tom that had escaped. So the part of Voldemort that had escaped, the Dark Lord, died. The part that was still trapped in the Imperishable Curse, the little Tom, continued to live. As far as Tom as a whole was concerned, he was still alive. So the Horcrux resurrection mechanism was not triggered, which led to Lynn finally capturing an eight-year-old Tom.

However, Dumbledore's next words completely surprised Lynn.

"I'm ready to hand him over to you."

Lynn immediately wondered if he had used the Explosion Curse too often yesterday and made his ears ring.

"Professor, what did you say?"

Dumbledore pushed the small ball in his hand in front of Lynn.

"I've failed once before, so I don't want to ruin this child's life again. I was a little hesitant about entrusting Tom to you, but after listening to your analysis of Hogwarts and your reform plans, I think it's the right choice to have Tom educated by you."
