"You haven't left yet, Yue."

Lin Shiye, who was on his way home, bumped into Yagami Light at the school gate. The boy was holding a black umbrella, and a small patch of his white shirt collar was dampened by the slanting rain.

"Just finished working and was about to go home." Light Yagami looked up at him.

"Want to go together?"

The rain fell in a steady drizzle, pattering softly against the umbrella. The two walked side-by-side across the puddle-filled stone path, their footsteps drowned out by the rain, until they were about a hundred meters from the school gate when Yagami Light suddenly spoke:

"Yu-jin suddenly transferred schools today. Do you have any clues?" He looked at Lin Shi-ye's face, as if trying to glean something from it.

"Why do you think I know about this?" Lin Shiye raised an eyebrow.

"Intuition," Light Yagami chuckled softly.

"I wouldn't be surprised if you got involved in anything, let alone the gas explosion on campus last night... that's obviously a lie to fool kids."

"Wasn't the area sealed off? Did you sneak in?" Lin Shiye asked.

"That's right," Light Yagami readily admitted.

"You'll be a good cop," Lin Shiye couldn't help but say.

"Thank you." Light Yagami's thoughts drifted away, and he changed the subject.

"There really are supernatural forces in the world."

"Yeah, look there." Lin Shiye suddenly raised his hand and pointed to a certain spot.

Light Yagami looked in the direction he was pointing, and his breath hitched.

In the torrential rain, a pure black notebook lay quietly on the muddy ground. Strangely, the ground around it was completely dry; the raindrops seemed to have encountered an invisible barrier, stubbornly avoiding it.

On the cover, the silver English lettering gleamed coldly in the somber light of the day.

『DEATH NOTE』

"Death Note?" Light Yagami murmured unconsciously.

Lin Shiye had already bent down to pick up the notebook, and casually flipped to the first page, where the rules of this notebook came into view.

"The person whose name is written in this notebook will die? It's probably just a prank..."

Before he could finish speaking, Yagami Light saw Lin Shiye take out a pen and write his name on the first page.

"Hey, what are you doing!" Yagami Light exclaimed in surprise, quickly snatching the notebook back, but the three large characters "Lin Shiye" had already neatly occupied the entire first page.

"What's wrong? Of course I'd like to write my name on such a nice notebook and claim it as my own!" Lin Shiye said jokingly.

"But since we found it together, I can write your name on the side."

"You're being too reckless. What if the rules are actually true?" Yagami Light stared at the other person for a few seconds, and breathed a sigh of relief when he saw that nothing was wrong.

So it must have been someone's prank.

"Who...who exactly are you?"

A hoarse, chilling voice suddenly rang out from behind. Light Yagami shuddered and stiffly turned around to see a tall, slender black figure standing in the rain, looking at them.

Noticing Light Yagami's gaze, it forced a polite smile onto its ugly, ferocious face, but it clearly didn't work well, as Light Yagami was startled and took a few steps back.

"I haven't introduced myself yet. My name is Ryuk, the owner of this notebook." It paused, then added.

"It's Death."

"He's really ugly." Lin Shiye picked his nose.

Ryuk: ?

"Can't you just become a cute and cuddly little girl in black stockings?" Lin Shiye stroked his chin, looking at Ryuk's body with a malicious smile.

"The Grim Reaper should be able to do it, right? Quick, turn into a little loli and give me a good scolding!"

"You...you, are you really human?" Ryuk's face was filled with disbelief.

"I'm the Grim Reaper, how could I possibly..."

Lin Shiye's face darkened halfway through his sentence.

"If you can't do it, I'll kill you."

Ryuk started sweating profusely. In the end, he chose to follow his heart. A flash of white light appeared, and the tall, ferocious Grim Reaper disappeared, replaced by a little girl who barely reached Lin Shiye's chest.

She wore a black Lolita dress with knee-length black stockings, a pair of small black wings fluttering nervously behind her, black pigtails hanging down her back, and two big, watery eyes.

"Is this...is this okay?" Ryuk asked softly, clutching the hem of her skirt.

Lin Shiye didn't speak, but continued to stare intently at her.

Ryuk swallowed hard, closed his eyes, and with all his might, forced out two words through clenched teeth:

"Miscellaneous, miscellaneous fish~"

"Awesome!" Lin Shiye jumped up, almost sending his umbrella flying.

Light Yagami was completely dumbfounded.

.........

Half an hour later, Lin Shiye and Yagami Light sat down by the window at a nearby cafe.

Ryuk flew in mid-air, munching on an apple bigger than her face, her cheeks bulging, her two little feet wrapped in black stockings swinging restlessly, looking utterly devoid of the majesty of death.

Light Yagami held the black notebook, flipping through the rules page by page, his brows furrowing deeper and deeper.

"So, it's all true." He closed his notebook, his voice a little hoarse.

"Just by knowing someone's appearance and name, and writing it down, you can decide whether a person lives or dies."

"Hmm." Lin Shiye took a sip of coffee.

"Here you go, take it and play with it."

"Don't make me sound like the neighbor's brat." Light Yagami sighed.

"You don't want it? Not everyone can refuse this kind of power."

"Not interested." Lin Shiye shrugged.

"Aren't you interested in supernatural powers? This is perfect."

Light Yagami fell silent.

He looked down at the notebook in his hands; its black cover was cold and icy, like a magnet that drew away all light. The rain was still falling outside the window, a layer of mist obscuring the world around them.

"I've met many bad people." After a long while, Light Yagami finally spoke slowly.

"Those who commit heinous crimes but escape justice due to insufficient evidence or by exploiting loopholes in the law. Every time I see them on the news, I think, if only there were absolute justice in this world."

He looked up at Lin Shiye, a hint of confusion in his eyes: "But I don't have the right to judge others. Nobody does. Once I start using this to kill people, I'm no different from those criminals."

Upon hearing this, Lin Shiye almost spat out the coffee in his mouth.

What if I held back?

Do you dare to have a chat with the original author yourself?

"It's alright, Yue," Lin Shiye said, patting the other person's shoulder.

Believe in yourself. You may not need it, but you can't live without it. Do what you want to do. The strong follow their hearts, not the rules.

"Is this why you do whatever you want?" Light Yagami glanced at him.

"What are you talking about? I'm very law-abiding!" Lin Shiye said, looking like a model student.

Light Yagami rolled his eyes, then looked down at the Death Note again.

The café was quiet, save for the crunching sound of Ryuk biting into an apple. The rain gradually subsided, and sunlight filtered through the clouds, casting dappled shadows on the glass.

After an unknown amount of time, Light Yagami finally raised his head.

His eyes were no longer lost; instead, they held an unprecedented firmness. He looked into Lin Shiye's eyes and said, word by word:

"I know how to use it now."

"If one day I fall into depravity, then you will be the one to stop me, Shi Ye."
