A bizarre and terrifying experience; I messed up the dungeon world.
Chapter 53 Mid-air
"Interesting," she said. "Let's play then." Lin Wan stayed in the room until noon.
During this time, she heard noises downstairs, like someone walking around, and occasionally the clanging of pots and pans. It was normal household noise, but Lin Wan knew that nothing in this house was normal.
She sat on the bed, closed her eyes, and tried hard to remember.
Her memories were still hazy, but some fragments were beginning to clear. She remembered experiencing many instances and seeing all sorts of bizarre creatures. Some looked human, some weren't human at all. Some could talk, some could only scream.
She still remembers that she was very strong.
How powerful is she? So powerful that those eerie beings run away at the sight of her. So powerful that she can solo an S-rank dungeon. So powerful that even evil gods fear her.
But that was in the past.
Right now, she's just a newbie in an F-rank dungeon, with no items and no skills—no, wait, she does have one skill.
Fraudster.
Lin Wan opened her eyes and looked at her hands. She tried to recall the details of this ability, but her mind was blank. She only knew that the lies she told could come true, but were there any limitations? What conditions were required?
She decided to give it a try.
"I have a knife in my hand," Lin Wan said.
Nothing happened.
She frowned and said, "I have a knife in my hand, and it's very sharp."
Nothing happened.
Lin Wan thought for a moment and then put it another way: "The knife in my pocket has become sharper."
This time she felt it. That warm current returned, flowing from her heart to her pocket. She reached for the knife; the blade gleamed coldly in the sunlight, much sharper than before.
It turned out to be the case.
She can't create things out of thin air, but she can change what already exists. And the lie must be specific and believable enough.
Lin Wan put the knife away and walked to the door. She pressed her ear against the door; it was quiet outside.
She opened the door, and the corridor was empty. The six doors were still tightly closed, but Lin Wan noticed that light was shining through the crack in one of the doors.
It's the one that was locked before.
Lin Wan walked over and reached for the doorknob. This time the door opened.
Behind the door was a study. The bookshelves were filled with books, and on the table sat an old computer and some documents. Lin Wan walked in and picked up a document at random.
It is a contract.
[House Sale and Purchase Contract]
[Party A: Lin Jianguo]
[Party B: Wang Fang]
[Subject Property: Property located at No. XX, XX District, XX City]
Lin Wan turned to the last page and saw the signature and date.
2024 3 Month 26 Day.
The day after she died.
Lin Wan put the contract back where it belonged and turned on the computer. The computer was old, and it took a long time to boot up. When the screen finally lit up, there was only one folder on the desktop.
The folder is named "Wanwan".
Lin Wan opened the file; it contained photos and videos. The photos were of her as a child, taken with her parents. The videos documented her growth from birth to age ten.
The last video was dated August 15, 2020.
Lin Wan clicked on the video.
The image shows her mother sitting in the study, smiling at the camera.
"Wanwan, if you see this video, it means your mother is no longer here."
My mother's voice was gentle, but her eyes were red.
"Mom has so much to tell you, but time is running out. Wanwan, remember, there are many things in this world that we can't see, but they really exist. If one day you encounter those things, don't be afraid, Mom will protect you."
The mother in the video paused for a moment, then continued:
"Also, don't trust anyone. Including your father."
That concludes the video.
Lin Wan stared at the black screen, her mind a jumbled mess.
Did Mother know about the existence of the supernatural world? How did she find out? Also, why did she say not to trust Father?
Lin Wan turned off her computer and left the study. As she walked to the stairwell, preparing to go downstairs, she suddenly heard voices coming from downstairs.
It's a conversation between two people.
"Why isn't she coming down yet?"
"Don't worry, she'll come down."
"What if she doesn't come down?"
"Then go up and drag her down."
Lin Wan stopped in her tracks.
She recognized the two voices. One was Wang Fang's, and the other was her father's.
Lin Jianguo.
Lin Wan slowly walked down the stairs, each step very light. She reached the living room doorway and saw Wang Fang and Lin Jianguo sitting on the sofa.
Lin Jianguo was a middle-aged man with an ordinary appearance, wearing a wrinkled shirt. When he saw Lin Wan, a smile immediately spread across his face.
"Wanwan, you're finally down," he said. "Come here quickly, Daddy has something to tell you."
Lin Wan walked over and sat down on the sofa opposite them.
"What is it?"
"That's right." Lin Jianguo cleared his throat. "Your father and Aunt Wang discussed it and felt that this family needed some changes."
"What has changed?"
"As you know, Dad hasn't been doing too well at work lately, and our finances are a bit tight," Lin Jianguo said. "So we've decided to sell our house and move to a smaller one."
Lin Wan looked at him without saying anything.
"Of course, this requires your consent," Lin Jianguo continued. "After all, your mother has a share in this house. So Dad needs your signature to transfer your share to Dad."
As he spoke, he took a document from under the coffee table and handed it to Lin Wan.
Lin Wan took the document and glanced at it. It was another house sale contract, only this time she was the first party and Lin Jianguo was the second party.
"Let's sign it," Wang Fang said from the side. "It'll be better for everyone."
Lin Wan looked up at the two of them.
Lin Jianguo's smile was forced, his eyes darting around. Wang Fang, on the other hand, was quite composed, even a little smug.
"What if I don't sign?" Lin Wan asked.
Lin Jianguo's smile froze.
"Wanwan, what are you saying?" he said. "Dad is doing this for the good of the family."
"Is it for the good of this family, or for the good of yourself?"
"you--"
Lin Jianguo stood up, his face turning very pale.
"Lin Wan, don't be ungrateful," he said. "If your father hadn't raised you all these years, you would have starved to death long ago. Now that your father is asking you to sign something, you're making excuses?"
"I didn't say I wouldn't sign," Lin Wan said, "but I have one condition."
"What are the conditions?"
"Let me see my mother's belongings."
Lin Jianguo and Wang Fang exchanged a glance.
"Your mother's belongings have all been disposed of," Lin Jianguo said.
"all?"
"all."
Lin Wan smiled.
"Then I won't sign."
"You—" Lin Jianguo's face turned red with anger, "You unfilial daughter!"
He raised his hand to hit Lin Wan.
Lin Wan did not dodge.
She just looked at Lin Jianguo and said, "You can't hit me."
Lin Jianguo's hand froze in mid-air.
He wanted to keep swinging, but his hand just wouldn't move. His face turned bright red, veins bulging, but his hand remained frozen in place.
"What happened?" Wang Fang stood up. "Why didn't you call?"
"I...I can't move..." Lin Jianguo's voice trembled.
Lin Wan stood up and walked to Lin Jianguo.
