Chapter 261 The Reason for Offering It to You
After closing the door to the room, Jiang Zhiyu walked over to the old man that Seventeen had casually tossed on the ground. He was lying in the corner with his head tilted to one side, sleeping like a pig.
Jiang Zhiyu glanced at him and squatted down.
She knew this type of person all too well. Spies were mostly tough nuts to crack, especially older guys like him. Waking him up wouldn't necessarily yield anything; it would only cause her more trouble.
She raised her fingertip and gently touched his brow.
The spiritual energy seeped into his fingertips.
Jiang Zhiyu closed her eyes.
Images flashed through her mind.
They really are from the British Empire.
The purpose of these people lurking here is quite straightforward: to acquire technology and bring it back. They want it from every field. If their own families can't use it, they resell it at a high price to other earls or other noble families. In short, it's a genuine business.
Scroll down further.
His contact was a professor at Lin Ruihua's university named Edmund.
Jiang Zhiyu's eyelashes twitched.
Their system was very hierarchical. This old man was only allowed to contact Edmund directly; he had no other leads. Even the day they brought Lin Ruihua to the basement, Edmund had notified him several hours in advance.
He barely cared about the business in the shop.
His persona is that of a "lover of Chinese culture," and he always puts on the airs of an old scholar, specifically to attract unsuspecting Eastern collectors to his door.
Jiang Zhiyu's lips curled into a cold smile.
He got lucky, like a blind cat stumbling upon a dead mouse. He actually made a small name for himself on the street and also managed to collect quite a few genuine antiques.
As she dug deeper, her brows furrowed even more.
In previous years, those people who migrated from the mainland brought ship after ship of gold, silver and valuables. They couldn't speak the language and had short tempers, so most of them ended up being bought up by people like them at extremely low prices.
"Pooh."
Jiang Zhiyu cursed inwardly.
She lifted her fingers and opened her eyes.
The old man had no valuable clues left in his mind.
Jiang Zhiyu straightened up and nodded to Seventeen.
"Get rid of him, but don't leave him near the yard, throw him into the sea."
Seventeen gently folded her wings.
"Alright, host."
The old man's figure vanished from the spot with a "pop".
Jiang Zhiyu stopped looking at that spot and with a thought, withdrew from the space.
When she came out, she was standing in front of the floor-to-ceiling window of her room. It was already late at night outside.
She tugged at her coat, and immediately recalled the location of Edmund University in her mind.
The next second, she and Seventeen were already standing in the shadows of a tree in a corner of the campus.
A night breeze swept across the lawn, and a few windows in the old buildings still shone with light. Jiang Zhiyu scanned the area with her spiritual energy, but found no one of noteworthy significance.
Her gaze lingered on the faculty building for a moment.
A professor went missing for three months, yet it didn't cause a ripple at the school; not even a proper missing person notice was issued.
The coldness in Jiang Zhiyu's eyes deepened even further.
"It seems that human life is the cheapest thing in this country."
Seventeen snorted in his mind and didn't reply.
Jiang Zhiyu withdrew her gaze and, following the memory in the old man's head, directly retrieved Edmund's address.
A flash of light and shadow.
The next second, Jiang Zhiyu was already standing in Edmund's bedroom on the second floor.
The person on the bed was quite alert.
The moment Jiang Zhiyu's heel touched the floor, her eyes snapped open in the darkness.
Edmund was about to make a move.
Jiang Zhiyu was much faster than him.
A clean and swift chop to the back of his neck.
Before the man could even utter half a syllable, he went limp.
Jiang Zhiyu then put him into her spatial storage.
She didn't leave immediately, but instead looked around his room.
A drawer in the study cabinet was locked with a stack of documents—backups of the research intelligence he had been sending back every day for the past two years, densely marked with pencil. She wrapped them up with her thoughts and stored them in her spatial storage.
On the small table beside her bed were two copies of the latest telegram drafts, one sent three days ago and the other received two days ago. She took them both.
As for the other things in the house.
She glanced around but didn't find anything of value. Too lazy to move, Jiang Zhiyu turned and took a few steps towards the window.
The light and shadow flashed again.
She had already returned to the window of her own guest room at her uncle's house.
Seventeen tiny mechanical bodies emerged from the space, their wings drooping softly.
"Host."
Its voice even sounded a little sleepy.
"It's now incredibly late at night."
It moved closer.
"You can rest for the night, and we'll continue the trial tomorrow. This person isn't going to run away, and there's no rush."
Jiang Zhiyu shook her head.
"No."
She raised her hand and rubbed her temples.
"I'd better get this over with in my head now, just in case things get complicated."
She walked straight to the bedside, sat down, and closed her eyes.
With a thought, Mr. Edmund was tossed onto the grassy area of the space by Seventeen with a "thud".
The old method.
Jiang Zhiyu raised her fingertip and placed it on his brow. Her spiritual energy seeped through her fingertip, and with that one flow, it felt like a needle had pierced her temple. She frowned slightly but didn't stop.
Jiang Zhiyu's breathing gradually quickened; no, it hurt too much.
She used too much mental energy today. During the day, she went door-to-door in the antique street, and at night she teleported to save people and went through the old man's memories. One trip after another, even though she had a good foundation, she couldn't hold on any longer.
Her eyebrows furrowed more and more, and she pressed her fingertips against her temples.
Seventeen was so anxious that he flapped his wings.
"Host, please stop for a moment."
"fine."
Jiang Zhiyu raised her hand, took out a small cup of spiritual spring water from her spatial storage, and drank it down.
The cool sensation slid down my throat and all the way to my brow, and the stabbing pain finally subsided.
She exhaled and placed her fingertips back on Edmund's brow.
The images in my mind flashed by one by one.
As she flipped through the pages, Jiang Zhiyu suddenly let out a "heh".
The laugh was soft, yet it carried a hint of unexpected joy.
She muttered something to herself.
"Hehe, this is just like having a pillow delivered to someone who's been dozing off."
Seventeen moved closer and curiously flapped its wings.
"Host, what are you seeing?"
Jiang Zhiyu opened her eyes, and half of the weariness in them disappeared, replaced by the interest of seeing her prey.
She lifted her fingers off Edmund's brow.
"I saw it."
She paused.
"The owner of that bronze cauldron."
She smiled slightly, her voice lingering.
"I was actually planning how to buy that old count's treasure."
She winked at Seventeen.
"Isn't this just giving me a perfectly legitimate reason to buy something for free?"
