As darkness fell, the dishes were laid out on the table one by one.

The whole family sat neatly around the long dining table.

When Su Lixing picked up his chopsticks, his eyes were still a little unfocused. They'd come all this way. At this crucial moment, did he really know who was behind his niece's shopping spree?

Su Wenhao didn't have as many thoughts as his father. He clung to Jiang Zhiyu's arm, his face beaming as he began to chatter:

"Oh, little cousin, I've missed you so much!"

He winked at her as he spoke.

"You've been gone for months, and I've been talking about you every day. My mom's ears are practically ringing from all the nagging. You've finally come back."

He sat down in the chair and slapped his thighs with both hands:

"Let me tell you, I bought a new motorcycle last month. The style, the sound—every girl on the street looks at you differently when you go out for a spin. We'll each ride one, and I'll take you all over town for a spin. Let's see who has such a beautiful cousin!"

He became more and more excited as he spoke, wishing he could take Jiang Zhiyu away on the spot.

"It's so nice! Finally, someone's here with me."

His older cousin Su Wenbin and Zhou Xiaoman were laughing across from him. They exchanged a glance, but neither of them interrupted him; they just let him show off.

Su Lixing couldn't stand it any longer and patted his youngest son on the shoulder:

"Alright, Wenhao, stop fooling around."

He scolded in a low voice.

"Let your cousin eat first. She's come all this way and is starving. You've already made a racket and are going to deafen her."

Su Wenhao chuckled, stuffed a mouthful of food into his mouth, and behaved himself for two seconds.

Shen Peiyu sat opposite Jiang Zhiyu, and only after the commotion subsided slightly did she slowly place her chopsticks on the edge of the plate. She looked up at her granddaughter, her face earnest:

"Zhiyu."

The old lady paused for a moment.

"Didn't you say you had some explosive news to share? Now that everyone's here, go ahead and tell us."

One sentence drew the attention of everyone at the table.

Su Lixing's chopsticks froze in mid-air. Su Wenhao's eyes lit up, and he moved even closer, looking like he was waiting to see a good show.

Jiang Zhiyu put down her chopsticks, sat up straight, and smiled at her grandmother.

Then she said slowly:

"Um... I got married."

The words were spoken lightly, but when they landed on the dinner table, they were like thunderclaps.

"What?!"

Su Lixing's chopsticks clattered onto the table. His composure vanished instantly, his eyes widened, and he leaned forward.

"How old are you to be getting married?"

His voice was full of disbelief.

Do your parents know?

Jiang Zhiyu's shoulders twitched slightly at the shout, then she nodded helplessly.

"Of course I know. How could I not tell my parents about something this important?"

"So he just lets you act like this?"

Su Lixing's tone suddenly turned stern.

"You're only nineteen, and he already agreed?"

Jiang Zhiyu smacked her lips and remained silent for a moment.

Su Jinglun, sitting on her other side, hadn't uttered a sound from beginning to end, only slowly putting down his wine glass now. The old man's eyebrows furrowed, his gaze fixed on his granddaughter's face, his voice low and deep:

"What do you do for a living? Who's in your family? What's your character like? Are your family members easy to get along with?"

A barrage of questions came crashing down on me.

Jiang Zhiyu was stunned by this series of "quizzes". Her lips moved, but she didn't know where to start answering.

Just then, Su Wenhao jumped up from his chair with a "clatter," dropping his chopsticks in the process.

"No way!"

His voice was so loud that half the room could hear it.

"Little cousin, you—you're getting married already?"

The excitement he had shown while watching the show vanished completely, replaced by shock and even a hint of despair.

"They got married even earlier than me!"

He grabbed his hair.

"I'm doomed, I'm completely finished. My mom will definitely be waiting at the door every day from now on."

As he spoke, he plopped back down in his chair, slumping into it as if he had no will to live.

His interruption immediately eased the tense atmosphere at the dinner table. Jiang Zhiyu took the opportunity to put down her chopsticks and waved to her grandfather:

"Grandpa, don't worry, I'll explain everything to you one by one."

She leaned back in her chair, her tone softening:

"I met him in the port city. He's currently an active-duty regimental commander. His grandfather was a veteran revolutionary who's now retired. His father and mother-in-law both work in the military region, and his family is very easy to get along with. He's an only child. However, he also has an uncle in the military region."

She paused for a moment, then added:

"You know I'm extremely picky about people's character."

Su Jinglun's brows relaxed slightly, but he remained silent, waiting for her to continue.

Jiang Zhiyu paused for a moment, then lowered her voice even further:

"I hadn't originally planned to get married so soon."

She lowered her eyes.

"You've probably heard the news from back home. A while ago, I just finished a mission, and my old boss, whose health wasn't great at the time, personally told me about this. I thought about it and just agreed. Anyway, I was going to get married soon, and I liked him, so I just went ahead and got married."

The room fell silent.

"The former leader personally intervened?"

Su Lixing repeated the sentence in a low voice.

Jiang Zhiyu hummed in agreement.

No one spoke at the dinner table for a moment.

Su Jinglun picked up his wine glass, took a small sip, and his gaze fell on the table. Although he had been in the US for years and wasn't physically present in China, he would spend hours reading those few Chinese newspapers whenever there was any disturbance in the country.

The words "old leader" weighed heavily on his heart, more so than many younger people could imagine. A few days ago, he and Shen Peiyu, two old folks, read that brief news item in the corner of the newspaper several times over. In the end, the old lady folded the newspaper, turned around, went inside, and wiped her eyes for a long time.

"Such a person."

Su Jinglun said in a low voice.

"He just left like that."

Shen Peiyu's eyes reddened again. She picked up a napkin and dabbed at the corners of her eyes, without saying a word.

Su Lixing also sighed:

"These past few days, the Chinese community in San Francisco has been talking about this, and several elderly gentlemen have shed tears."

Everyone in the room fell silent, except for the occasional bark of a dog outside the window.

After a long pause, it was my aunt who spoke first, her gentle voice dispelling the heavy atmosphere:

"Alright, alright."

She reached out and patted Jiang Zhiyu's hand.

"Now that you're married, live a good life together. Your parents in heaven would want their children to be happy."

She paused, then looked up at Jiang Zhiyu again:

"Zhiyu, how long are you staying this time?"

Jiang Zhiyu was brought back to her senses by her words and smiled:

"It's not certain yet, Auntie. But we have plenty of time this time."

Before he could finish speaking, Su Wenhao jumped up again. He had just been half-dead, but now his eyes lit up:

"So, you can play with me for a long time?"

Jiang Zhiyu was amused by his sudden change of topic, raised her hand to touch her forehead, and looked at him with a resentful expression:

"I'm here on business. I need to look up some things."

"Investigate what?"

Su Wenhao immediately leaned over, patting his chest loudly:

"You know, I've got connections. Just tell me what you want to investigate. I'll figure out all the ins and outs here for you."

Su Lixing had originally intended to say something to him, but now he chimed in:

"Yes, let Wenhao accompany you."

He put his chopsticks on the table.

"He's always irresponsible in business, but he's amassed a huge following of scoundrels. Having him run errands for you will be a good way to curb his idleness."

Su Wenhao wasn't annoyed by his father's public reprimand; instead, he puffed out his chest, looking proud.

"See, see, even my dad said that."

Jiang Zhiyu pondered for a moment. She was unfamiliar with the country, so having someone like Su Wenhao, who was resourceful and capable, step in would save her a lot of trouble.

She nodded:

"Then I'll have to trouble you, Cousin Wenhao."

Su Wenhao chuckled, his tail practically wagging in pride.

The meal lasted until almost nine o'clock. The elderly nanny, Aunt Wang, came downstairs and stood respectfully at the dining table.

Su Lixing looked up at her and asked:

"Is Zhiyu's room ready?"

Aunt Wang nodded:

"Miss Biao's room has been prepared."

Jiang Zhiyu smiled and thanked her, then stood up and said goodbye to everyone.

Grandma really treated her like a treasure; several months passed, and nothing in the room was touched.

After washing up, she lay down on the bed and stared blankly at the ceiling.

Seventeen poked its head out from the space and flapped its wings twice lightly:

"Host, what are your plans for tomorrow?"

Jiang Zhiyu smiled with her eyes narrowed:

"I'll have my cousin Wenhao take me out for a look around tomorrow. He's familiar with the black market and collectors' circles in the US. As for the bronze artifacts mentioned in the old leader's notes, aside from those in China, they're all in Europe, so there's no rush."

She stretched, her voice trailing off lazily:

"Let's pick up some meteorites while we're at it!"

Seventeen's wings immediately began to flap merrily.

Jiang Zhiyu rolled over, pulled the blanket over herself, and smiled slightly.

"Since we're already here, how can we not take advantage of this opportunity?"
