Chapter 252 Arriving at Uncle's House
The taxi stopped in front of my uncle's house.
Jiang Zhiyu paid the fare and got off the bus carrying a small handbag. She glanced up at the familiar carved iron gate, and a smile immediately appeared on her lips. The small courtyard inside was still the same as before, with a row of neatly trimmed roses that had just finished blooming, and a few short orange trees with a few green fruits hanging on them.
The iron gate was ajar.
She gently pushed open a crack in the door and saw two familiar figures in the yard—Grandma Shen Peiyu leading the family's white dog, and Grandpa Su Jinglun standing beside them with his hands behind his back, the two of them talking to each other. The setting sun slanted in, casting long shadows of the two elderly people.
Jiang Zhiyu didn't say anything, just stood there gracefully at the door, smiling as she watched them.
The little dog was the first to react, barking at the door.
Shen Peiyu and Su Jinglun both looked up at the same time.
The dog leashes in the two people's hands fell to the ground with a "thud".
Shen Peiyu's eyes widened. She rubbed her eyes, blinked, and her voice trembled:
"Old man...you, look at that...!"
Su Jinglun also wiped his eyes, took two steps forward, moved his lips, but couldn't say anything for a long time.
Jiang Zhiyu couldn't hold back any longer and grinned at them:
"Grandpa, Grandma."
The moment those three words left her lips, Shen Peiyu jolted awake. She didn't care about anything else, dropping the dog leash and rushing to the door, her steps faltering as her heels clattered on the cobblestone path.
Jiang Zhiyu's heart skipped a beat, and she quickly ran forward. Afraid that her grandmother might fall again, she caught the old lady in just a few steps.
Grandma, why are you running?!
Her voice carried a hint of resentment, but her eyes were quietly welling up with tears.
"I can't run away, what if I fall?"
Shen Peiyu grabbed her arm and groped her face and shoulders with her other hand, as if she wanted to check her over from head to toe.
"It really is you, it really is you."
As the old lady kept muttering to herself, her eyes welled up with tears.
Su Jinglun followed closely behind, slightly out of breath. When he arrived, he didn't speak at first, but stared at his granddaughter for several seconds. Only after he realized that the person standing in front of him was indeed his beloved granddaughter did he chuckle.
"Oh dear, as people get older, they start to think their eyesight is failing."
The old man raised his hand and wiped the corner of his eye.
"I can't believe it! It really is my precious granddaughter back. Come on in, come on in!"
He talked as he led the way inside, his mouth never stopping:
"Why didn't you call your uncle before you came so he could pick you up? Why did you come all by yourself again? It's such a long way, what if something happened to you?"
Jiang Zhiyu was flanked by two elderly people and walked into the courtyard, her eyes crinkling with laughter.
"Don't worry, Grandpa, everything's alright."
She deliberately puffed out her chest, looking smug.
"Don't you know how capable your granddaughter is? I'm the deputy director now."
Seventeen chuckled in her mind, her little wings flapping happily:
"Host, you are the deputy director who escaped."
Jiang Zhiyu glared at it secretly, but showed no emotion on her face.
Su Jinglun and Shen Peiyu paused at the same time, exchanged a glance, and their eyes were full of surprise.
"What deputy director?"
Shen Peiyu gripped her hand even tighter.
Jiang Zhiyu proudly raised her chin slightly, her tail wagging high in the air:
"I'm currently the deputy director of a bureau."
She deliberately lowered her voice and whispered to the two elderly people:
"It's a classified unit, so I can't tell you exactly what they do."
Shen Peiyu was amused by her smug look and patted her hand while laughing.
"Okay, okay, I won't say anymore."
The old lady hugged her tightly, her pride evident in her eyes.
"I knew our granddaughter was amazing. She's so young and already a deputy director, not bad at all."
She turned to look at her husband, chin raised:
"He's way better than those two brats at home, isn't he, old man?"
Su Jinglun snorted, but he couldn't suppress the smile on his face:
"That's right. Don't you even know whose granddaughter she is?"
The three of them chatted and laughed as they entered the house. A faint scent of sandalwood and tea wafted through the air, and several potted green plants stood lushly by the windowsill. Jiang Zhiyu sat down on the sofa with practiced ease, placed her handbag aside, and waited for the two elderly people to feed her.
Shen Peiyu jogged into the kitchen to wash the fruit, while Su Jinglun rummaged through the cupboard for snacks. Jiang Zhiyu leaned back on the cushions, crossed her legs, and felt incredibly pleased with herself, secretly gloating to Seventeen again:
"Look, this is the treatment a deputy director should receive."
She thought to herself.
"Unlike old Zhuge Liang, who keeps me buried in piles of documents all day long, stack after stack, until my head is about to explode. When I get back this time, he'll probably be cursing me in his heart."
She chuckled to herself at the thought.
"But it's okay, it's his fault for giving me so many documents."
Seventeen flapped its wings gently, wearing the expression of a mother watching her child get into trouble:
"Host, just keep acting like this."
Sure enough, in no time, the coffee table was piled high with all sorts of snacks and cut fruit.
Shen Peiyu brought out the last plate of dried apricots, sat down next to her, and put her arm around her.
"Honey, are you hungry? I'll have the nanny make you something to eat right away."
Jiang Zhiyu leaned closer to the old lady and shook her head.
"Grandma, I'm not hungry yet. Let's eat together when Uncle and Aunt get home from get off work."
As she spoke, she pretended to pull her handbag over and rummage through it. In reality, she had already retrieved the photo from her online storage with a flick of her finger.
The photo was taken in front of the villa on the day her parents moved back to Shanghai. Su Wanqing's eyebrows and eyes were relaxed, and Jiang Boxun stood next to her. Behind them was the familiar old house with white walls.
She hid the photo in her palm, deliberately keeping it a secret.
"Grandpa and Grandma, wouldn't you like to see your precious daughter?"
Shen Peiyu paused.
Su Jinglun also looked up from the snack box.
Jiang Zhiyu suddenly flashed the photo and held it up in front of the two elderly people:
"Hey—it's right in my hands."
Shen Peiyu's eyes widened instantly. She reached out her hand, her fingers trembling.
"You silly girl, hurry up and let me see it."
The old lady's voice had changed tone.
Jiang Zhiyu handed over the photo with both hands.
Shen Peiyu held the photo, her hands trembling so badly that she almost pressed her eyes against it to look at it.
In the photo, Su Wanqing is wearing a plain-colored shirt, her hair pulled back, standing at her front door with a faint smile on her lips. Although her face shows more signs of age than when she was younger, the composure and ease in her eyes indicate that she is indeed doing well.
As Shen Peiyu watched, tears streamed down her face.
"My daughter!"
The old lady covered her mouth, her shoulders twitching.
"You've suffered, you've suffered for so many years."
Su Jinglun felt a pang of sadness watching from the side. He reached out and took the photo from his wife's hand, holding it steadily in his hands to examine it. After looking at it for a while, he raised his hand and gently patted the old lady's back.
"Old woman, don't cry, don't cry."
The old man's voice also sounded a bit muffled.
"Look—"
He held the photo up to Shen Peiyu's face.
"Although she looks quite different from when we left, if you look closely, doesn't she look even younger than Su Lixing?"
Shen Peiyu wiped away her tears and leaned closer to examine it carefully. After looking at it for a while, she nodded, sobbing.
"Yes...it's better looking than Lixing."
The old lady couldn't suppress the hint of pride in her voice.
"She is still my daughter."
Jiang Zhiyu sat to one side, her lips twitching slightly.
She silently lit a candle for her uncle in her heart.
However, she remained outwardly calm, and instead puffed out her chest, looking quite pleased with herself.
"Of course."
She held her chin up.
"My mother is a rare beauty."
She deliberately dragged out the last syllable.
"Otherwise, would I be this beautiful?"
Shen Peiyu was amused by her shameless words and burst into laughter through her tears, then gently patted her on the back.
"You silly girl."
The old lady hugged her again and gave her a tight hug.
Jiang Zhiyu snuggled closer to the old man, her eyes subtly reddening. She tilted her head back and winked at the two elderly people:
"Grandpa and Grandma, I'll tell you something more after Uncle and Aunt get home from get off work tonight."
She deliberately dragged out her words.
"Explosive."
Shen Peiyu and Su Jinglun exchanged a glance.
The old lady reached out and pinched the tip of her nose, giving her a reproachful glare:
"You silly girl, what are you keeping me in suspense for? Just tell me!"
Jiang Zhiyu held the old lady's arm, her eyes crinkling with laughter, but she refused to say anything.
