Chapter 13 Bronze Cauldron
Jiang Zhiyu walked slowly to the reserved seat in the front row, attracting all sorts of gazes.
Jiang Zhiyu ignored them all.
"Whose young lady is this? I've never seen her before..."
"Look at that necklace, the material and color are really good."
"I heard a mysterious seller consigned several rare items for auction today. Could it be her?"
She gracefully took her seat, and a waiter immediately served her a cup of pre-Qingming Longjing tea. The tea was clear and bright, emitting a delicate aroma. She raised the cup, took a small sip, and glanced casually across the room.
White was staring at her through binoculars, his eyes full of inquiry; several antique dealers huddled together, their eyes also occasionally sweeping over her.
The three "accomplices" arranged by Shen Muyan were pretending not to know each other and were sitting in three corners.
[Host, there are at least seven groups of people trying to find out your background!] 0047's voice was tense.
"Let them see." Jiang Zhiyu lightly tapped the rim of her glass with her fingertip. "The more mysterious and indifferent we are, the less they will dare to act rashly."
The auctioneer struck the gavel, and the hall fell silent instantly.
"The first lot is a pair of Republic-era famille rose porcelain vases, painted with the 'Magu Offering Longevity' motif, with bright and vibrant glazes. The starting bid is 12,000."
"when"
Shen Muyan's men raised their paddles first, but stopped at 15,000. In the end, a Fujian businessman won the bid for 23,000.
"Just a warm-up." Jiang Zhiyu put down her teacup and watched as the second item was brought up for auction—a jade hairpin she had found in her uncle's luggage. It was of ordinary quality, at most a small trinket from the Republic of China era.
"A jade hairpin from Hetian dating back to the Republic of China era, starting bid 3,000."
Before the "tuoer" could even make a move, a lady in the back row raised her paddle: "Four thousand." She had clearly taken a liking to the design of the jade hairpin, and it was eventually sold for six thousand.
The next few items were all "second-rate" items that she had selected—a pair of Qing Dynasty silver bracelets, half a Ming Dynasty imitation painting and calligraphy, and a Republic of China bronze incense burner.
Shen Muyan's people cooperated well, adding fuel to the fire each time the price was stuck, ultimately resulting in a transaction price that was more than 30% higher than expected. Even better, all these items ended up in White's hands.
White seemed to be holding back a lot of energy; she would fight for anything she submitted, no matter how good or bad it was.
"Host, White is almost out of the budget!" 0047 reported excitedly, [He only has less than two hundred thousand left in his checkbook!]
"The real show has just begun." Jiang Zhiyu looked at the sandalwood box that was pushed onto the stage. Inside was a pair of jade pendants she had found in Li Jiahao's box. They were carved with "Dragon and Phoenix Bringing Auspiciousness" and the jade was warm and smooth. They could be considered mid-range collectibles.
"A pair of Qing Dynasty Hetian white jade pendants, starting bid 80,000."
White almost immediately raised his paddle: "Ninety thousand!"
Shen Muyan's men immediately followed up with, shouting, "One hundred thousand!"
"110,000!" White's face darkened. He'd remembered this Shen Muyan. Going against them meant he didn't want to stay in Hong Kong.
When the price soared to 150,000, no one in the room raised their paddles anymore. Just as White was about to breathe a sigh of relief, Shen Muyan's men suddenly shouted, "170,000!"
White slammed his fist on the table and growled, "Two hundred thousand!"
This was all the cash he could muster. Shen Muyan's men glanced at Jiang Zhiyu, and seeing that she didn't move, they put down their cards.
"Two hundred thousand once! Two hundred thousand twice! Sold!"
When White's men took the jade pendant back, he stared intently at Jiang Zhiyu, as if trying to etch her face into his mind. Jiang Zhiyu, however, returned his gaze with a faint smile.
Just then, 0047 suddenly screamed: [Host! Pay attention to the next item! Quick!]
Jiang Zhiyu was also startled by the small system. She saw that a small bronze cauldron had been placed on the display stand. The cauldron was covered in verdigris, its shape simple and ancient, clearly an old artifact, even the patterns were blurred. It looked somewhat like something unearthed from an ancient tomb. People in Hong Kong are particular about feng shui, so this item probably wouldn't attract many bidders.
The auctioneer clearly didn't have high hopes for the item, and lazily introduced it: "An unidentified bronze tripod, date unknown. Starting bid: HK$5,000."
The room fell silent; even the casual conversations ceased. Who would spend five thousand yuan on a broken bronze tripod?
[Host! This is it! It contains the energy source the system needs! It can help me upgrade!] 0047's voice trembled. [Quickly, buy it! No matter the price, get it!]
Jiang Zhiyu remained calm, picked up her teacup to cover half her face, and asked herself in her heart, "Are you sure? This thing looks like a piece of scrap copper."
[Absolutely certain! My core program is overheating! The substance in this cauldron can repair my damage. If there's enough energy, it might even allow me to level up.]
She no longer hesitated. Under the watchful eyes of everyone present, she slowly raised her card: "Five thousand."
Everyone was stunned. White frowned, clearly unable to understand why this mysterious woman would take a liking to this broken cauldron.
"Five thousand once..." the auctioneer's voice trailed off.
"Six thousand!" a voice suddenly rang out. Jiang Zhiyu turned her head and saw an old man in a Zhongshan suit, his cuffs worn shiny, looking like a down-on-his-luck scholar.
[Host! He is a renowned bronze expert in this area!]
"Ten thousand." Jiang Zhiyu immediately raised the price.
The old man paused for a moment, then gritted his teeth: "Twelve thousand!"
"Thirty thousand." She said in a flat tone, as if she were saying that the weather was nice today.
The old man sighed helplessly and put down the sign.
"30,000 once! 30,000 twice! Sold!"
The moment the mallet fell, 0047 cheered in her mind: [Great, Host! Once I get the cauldron, I might be able to level up!]
Jiang Zhiyu ignored its excitement and scanned the entire room. White's men were making a low-key phone call, their eyes intentionally or unintentionally glancing at her; several bodyguards in black moved towards the exit, clearly intending to block her.
As soon as the auction ended, she didn't go backstage to settle the account; she got up and walked straight out. Shen Muyan's men appeared out of nowhere and silently blocked her from several people who tried to approach her.
"Miss Jiang, shall I have someone send the things over to you?" Shen Muyan walked up to her at some point, his voice very low.
"No need," Jiang Zhiyu glanced at the bronze cauldron on the platform. "I'll bring my own."
She walked straight to the front of the table, ignoring the waiters' surprised looks, and bent down to pick up the bronze cauldron. The cauldron looked heavy, but it was actually lighter than expected. It was cool to the touch, and there seemed to be some words engraved on the bottom, but they were covered by verdigris and could not be seen clearly.
As soon as she stepped out of the clubhouse, she saw three black cars parked at the alley entrance, their doors wide open, and several men in black suits staring at her. White stood beside one of the cars, toying with his pocket watch, grinning like a cunning old fox.
"Miss Jiang, please wait a moment." He said in broken Chinese, "I am very interested in the bronze tripod you bid on. I wonder if you would be willing to part with it? Of course, you can set the price."
Jiang Zhiyu, holding the tripod, didn't stop walking: "Not for sale."
"Twenty times." White's voice turned cold. "Or, shall I have someone from the consulate accompany you?"
Threat? Jiang Zhiyu smiled. She suddenly turned around, picked up the cauldron, and walked towards White's car. The bodyguard reached out to stop her.
"Get out of the way." Her tone was calm, yet it carried an intimidating aura. With a subtle activation of her mental energy, the group suddenly froze in place, unable to move.
Then the bodyguards all fell to the ground. White's smug expression changed, and just as he was about to back away, Jiang Zhiyu walked up to him. "Want it? How about I give you this cauldron—as a coffin?" Her voice was low and soft, but it sent a chill down White's spine.
Watching Jiang Zhiyu turn and walk into the crowd, her figure quickly disappearing around the street corner, he actually forgot to call someone to chase after her.
Jiang Zhiyu didn't go straight back to the Tai'an Inn. She carried the cauldron into an alley three streets away, and after confirming that no one was following her, she put the cauldron into her spatial storage. She then changed into a set of coarse cloth clothes, messed up her hair, and transformed back into the "fleeing girl" she once was.
[Host, a lot of people are staking out the hotel!] 0047's voice was tense.
"As expected." Jiang Zhiyu walked into another alley, her eyes turning cold. "I can't stay here anymore." She then disappeared around the corner in a few flashes.
The sounds of a forced search could be faintly heard from behind.
