Chapter 72 The Murderous Peach Tree
Hearing the excited shouts behind her, Yin Leyao didn't stop; instead, she quickened her pace.
She didn't turn around.
On this island, the most dangerous things are the unusual.
She couldn't believe that the peaches that bore fruit in winter were such a bright red color.
After walking about fifty meters, the voice behind me suddenly changed tone.
"What's wrong with this peach—"
The shouting stopped.
It broke very cleanly.
Yin Leyao crouched down and hid behind a thick tree trunk.
She waited for more than ten seconds, but heard no more sound.
The wind rustled through the tree canopy.
She lowered her body, took a few steps back towards the peach grove, and peeked through the gaps in the bushes.
The player was still standing in front of the peach tree, but in the wrong posture.
The peach tree branches pierced his body from all sides, lifting him off the ground.
The peach in his hand rolled to the ground and split open, spilling out not flesh, but a dark red, viscous liquid.
The branches were still moving, slowly tightening, like pythons constricting their prey.
The player's foot twitched twice, then stopped moving completely.
The peaches on the peach tree are even redder than before.
Yin Leyao turned back and retraced her steps.
She walked very lightly, testing her footing with each step to make sure no dry branches would make a sound.
Only after leaving the peach grove did she straighten up and glance at the bird eggs in the bucket.
One egg is enough for one meal, but not enough to last the night. We need to find more before dark.
She walked along the foot of the mountain to the other side and found several low shrubs among the rocks, bearing small, dark purple berries.
She picked one, crushed it, and the juice on her fingertip didn't change color; it smelled slightly sour.
It should be edible. We'll find some live animals to test for poison later.
She broke off several branches and put them into the bucket.
Continuing on, she found seawater pooled in the rocky crevices at the edge of the beach, left by the receding tide. She crouched down and turned over the rocks, finding three small crabs and a handful of seashells.
Crabs are only the size of a thumb, and there aren't many snails, but protein is still protein.
A tattered piece of canvas, washed ashore by the sea, was wedged in a crevice in the reef.
Yin Leyao pulled it out forcefully; the canvas was only half the size of her palm, and barnacles were attached to it.
She scraped off the barnacles and stuffed the piece of cloth into her pocket. Even the smallest piece of cloth would be useful for keeping out the dampness at night when placed under her body.
The sky began to change color.
A layer of dark gray clouds pressed down from the sea level.
She glanced at the map in the upper right corner; the areas she had visited were already highlighted, while the areas she hadn't been to were still shrouded in gray fog.
You can't wander around outside after dark. Things on the island are already this eerie during the day, it'll only get worse at night.
Yin Leyao started walking back.
Following the marks she had made earlier, she first went to the crooked tree at the foot of the mountain, then to the clump of withered ferns next to the pile of rocks, and then to the pine tree halfway up the mountain from which she had peeled off a piece of bark.
The distance between each marker is no more than thirty steps, ensuring that the next one can be found in any lighting condition.
When we returned to the cave, the entrance was still blocked by coconut leaves.
She squeezed in sideways. The firebird's nest was on the pile of hay she had made. When it saw her come in, it opened its mouth and cried out.
"It's so noisy. Are you isolated because you're not with your tribe?" Yin Leyao put the bucket down.
The mollusk tilted its head and looked at the contents of the bucket. Seeing that there were no fish, it retreated back into the hay.
Yin Leyao inspected the cave.
The rate at which water dripped from the cracks in the rocks remained the same, but the water level in the puddle was slightly higher than before I left.
The coconut leaves blocking the entrance to the hole had not been moved.
She took the tattered canvas out of her pocket and spread it on her sleeping spot, then put a layer of dry grass on top of it.
Then take the berries, crabs, and conches out of the bucket and sort them.
The crabs were held down with stones to prevent them from crawling away, and the conch shells were placed next to the puddle to keep them moist.
The firewood in the bonfire had almost burned out, leaving only a few pieces of dark red charcoal.
Yin Leyao took a thin twig, walked over to the firebird, and poked its wing.
The Moltres looked up and let out a dissatisfied cry.
"Breath in fire! Are we going to freeze to death here?" Yin Leyao held a branch to its mouth.
The molten bird opened its beak and breathed out a wisp of fire, igniting the branch.
Yin Leyao quickly moved the fire to the woodpile, added a few dry branches, and the fire reignited.
Light filled the three-square-meter cave.
She used the tip of her dagger to pick out the conch shell and placed it on a stone slab next to the fire to roast.
The conch shell emits a faint hissing sound when heated, and the meat inside the shell contracts, releasing salty, fishy steam.
Crabs were thrown in as well. Their shells quickly turned red.
Yin Leyao opened the management group while eating.
Mackerel: "Seven died on the first day, that's impressive."
Stinky Octopus: "Four people died in Peach Grove, one fell into the swamp, and the other two got into a fight on the beach, stabbing each other in the back. It's hilarious."
Little Yellow Croaker: "Swamp? You put swamp on the island?"
Stinky Octopus: "It wasn't put there; it was there all along. After the tide goes out, there's a mangrove forest on the east side of the beach, and underneath it's all mud. If you step in, you can't get out."
Jellyfish: "What's the situation with the other players now?"
Mackerel: "Most of them are still searching for supplies on the beach, but a few smart ones have gone up the mountain, though there's only one cave."
Turbot: "Who's that in the cave?"
Mackerel: "Yin Leyao, she was the first one they found."
Little Yellow Croaker: "She's too fast."
Yin Leyao closed the group chat interface. So many people had suddenly entered the island.
But how many people came?
She picked up a spoonful of water from the puddle and took a sip. It was fresh water, with no strange taste; water seeping from the cracks in the rocks should be fine.
It was completely dark outside.
The wind blew in through the gaps in the coconut leaves, carrying the fishy smell and chill of the sea.
However, the temperature inside the cave is much higher than outside because of the presence of the Moltres.
Yin Leyao placed the dagger within easy reach on her right side.
The bird eggs were wrapped in hay and placed in a bucket, ready to be cooked and eaten the next morning.
The flamingo buried its head under its wings and made a series of gurgling sounds.
Yin Leyao leaned against the cave wall, not asleep, listening to the sounds outside with her eyes closed.
There were some sounds carried on the wind.
It's not ocean waves, it's not leaves.
What is that sound coming from afar, muffled, as if it's coming from underground?
It called a few times and then stopped. A few minutes later it called again, this time from a slightly closer position than before.
Yin Leyao opened her eyes and glanced at the cave entrance.
The coconut leaves provided excellent cover.
She switched the dagger from her right hand to her left, her palms dry and not sweaty.
About half an hour later.
The cries stopped, and nothing approached the cave.
Yin Leyao closed her eyes again, but she didn't actually fall asleep.
Every now and then, I would wake up to listen to the sounds outside.
The first night on the island, I can't sleep too soundly.
That stupid bird, on the other hand, was fast asleep; thankfully, it didn't snore.
If these birds can fight, my safety will be a bit better guaranteed.
Yin Leyao was half asleep, thinking that something was missing. Oh, she hadn't brought Black Shark.
