Mystery: Death Singer
Chapter 2 First Arrival in Tingen
A few days later, after handling the funeral arrangements for old York, Edric boarded a carriage and headed to Tingen, the "University City," a city that was only a few hours away.
As for the two letters that old York gave him at the end, one of them was a reply from Raphael's Cemetery, which clearly expressed his desire to hire Edric.
After all, Edric was not only young and a highly sought-after talent in the funeral industry, but also a skilled worker with three years of experience, so Raphael Cemetery had no reason to refuse him.
The other unopened letter was old York's will, in which the old man chose to leave his meager estate to Edric, who had accompanied and cared for him for three years.
What made Edric not want to stay in that town any longer was that the will came from three years ago, just one week after old York brought Edric back to the peaceful cemetery.
In addition, the demand for more potions was also a major driving force for Edric.
Although he knew he had transmigrated into the world of Lord of Mysteries, Edric's memories were so fragmented that he couldn't even remember his name from his previous life, let alone how the plot unfolded.
Moreover, the fact that he could recall a well-liked "corpse collector" in Tingen City was already one of his few "precious pieces of information."
Rather than trying his luck in other cities where he knew nothing, or going to Backlund where he knew it was important but couldn't quite place it, Edric thought it would be better to go to Tingen and try to find the big shot who led the "corpse collector" route.
As for joining the official Extraordinary Ones, Edric had absolutely no intention of doing so. The main reason was that the mere thought of it gave him a subtle feeling that something terrible was about to happen.
Although he couldn't recall the specifics, there was no doubt that avoiding the center of the whirlpool and picking up the small fish and shrimp washed ashore was Edric's safest course of action at the moment.
Upon arriving at Raphael's Cemetery, Edric immediately understood why the letter had given him such a strong sense of eagerness to recruit talent.
He glanced at them briefly and found that most of his future colleagues were middle-aged or elderly, with only a few middle-aged men in their prime. As for "young men" under the age of twenty, Edric was the only one.
However, big cities are big cities after all. Even for the same job, the weekly wage is much higher than in small towns, reaching an astonishing one gold pound.
As if sensing Edric's surprise, an old man named Shaster explained with a smile:
"This job isn't exactly respectable, and it involves a lot of heavy work, so the weekly wage is actually quite reasonable."
Edric thought about it carefully and realized that this was indeed the case.
Working in a cemetery inevitably involves dealing with all sorts of corpses. If it's a gentleman or lady with some wealth who has passed away, that's fine, because at least they will dress properly and presentably before coming to the cemetery.
If they encounter people who die unexpectedly and have no family members still alive, then the cemetery staff will inevitably have to deal with the corpses themselves, and over time they will inevitably get covered in the stench of corpses that they can't wash off.
This is also the main reason why there are no young people in Raphael's Cemetery except for Edric; after all, the stench of corpses is quite unbearable and would inevitably have a drastic impact on existing interpersonal relationships.
As young people, the most tiring tasks, such as digging the pit, carrying the coffin, and burying the pit, naturally fell to Edric and the middle-aged men, while the older colleagues were responsible for the slightly easier tasks, such as keeping watch at night and patrolling.
Although he wanted to complain that this meant the cemetery had virtually no security at night, Edric could understand the cemetery management's approach.
After all, these old men are not young anymore, and it is too risky for them to continue doing heavy physical labor. What if they accidentally bury themselves while digging?
Knowing that Edrik was arriving in Tingen for the first time and that there were many trivial matters to attend to, the Raphael Cemetery administrator granted him a half-day leave after he completed his registration and onboarding.
Just as Edric stepped out of the cemetery and aimlessly scanned his surroundings, an old man named Alvin caught up from behind, panting, and said:
"Edric, just a moment!"
Seeing that Edric had stopped, the old man slowed his movements, but explained even faster:
"Edric, I heard from Kalis that this is your first time in Tingen?"
Kalis is the manager of Raphael Cemetery, a proper official of the Kingdom of Rune, albeit a very minor one.
"Yes, Mr. Alvin," Edric nodded slowly.
Upon hearing this, Erwin immediately breathed a sigh of relief, and then eagerly said:
"Edric, I guess you haven't found a suitable place to rent yet, have you? Raphael Cemetery is located in the northern suburbs of Tingen. There's nothing there but mountains and forests and this cemetery. It's not suitable for humans to live in for long."
"So all the cemetery staff choose to live in the city of Tingen. For example, I live in an apartment on Iron Cross Street. Although the environment there is not very good, the rent is quite cheap. Although the landlord is a bit stingy, he is not a bad person at heart."
Iron Cross Street, it seems to be the street where the Klein family lives… Edric's brow twitched slightly, and he nodded slightly as he looked at Alvin, who had suddenly started stammering in front of him:
"So, you're trying to show me an apartment?"
"Yes."
Upon hearing this, Alvin smiled awkwardly, then frankly told Edric why he had done it:
"Although there are no gangs in Tingen, we often hear about thieves and robbers. Working at the cemetery inevitably means returning home late at night. I have a wife and five children, and only my eldest son has a stable job... I mean, I'm very worried about running into thieves and robbers..."
Edric nodded knowingly. He understood why Alvin had taken the initiative to catch up with him. Living in the same apartment meant that they would be taking the same route back. Although his skin was still somewhat sickly pale, Alvin was, after all, a young and strong man. If they could travel together, their safety would be greatly increased.
Looking at Alvin, who wanted to continue persuading him but didn't know what to say, Edric slowly nodded and said, "Then, I'll leave it to you, Mr. Alvin."
The elderly gentleman, whose head was already streaked with gray, raised his head with delight and spoke rapidly:
"Kalis didn't approve my leave request, so I'm sorry, you'll have to go to Franky's apartment by yourself. It's located on the middle street of Iron Cross Street, and the landlord is Mr. Franky. It's almost noon now, you should be able to find him at 'Haysen Bar' near the apartment..."
