I opened a clinic in the Abyss World
Chapter 257 Associate Chief Physician Vivian
"Come on, I'll take you downstairs first. After lunch, I'll arrange your dorm rooms." Charlotte ignored the noise from the neighbors, opened the balcony door, and headed downstairs.
Since they were already there, they decided to make the best of it. The four exchanged glances and then picked up their luggage and followed.
The abyss feels somewhat oppressive, unlike the boundless Elf Forest where the sky is always blue. Even standing under the black city walls, you can at least see half of the blue sky.
But there was none of that here; all you could see was a thick, gray fog, with only a narrow slit in the sky.
However, once inside, I felt much more comfortable.
The second floor was also paved with light gray marble, and the light on the ceiling was not from animal oil lamps, but from a kind of luminous white crystal, bright but not dazzling.
"Put your luggage in this room first. I'll arrange your dorm rooms later and then you can move your things over." Charlotte opened a room and gestured for them to leave their luggage there.
He added, "There are still patients waiting in line downstairs, and I may need to go down and see them for about an hour."
Upon hearing this, all four of them brightened up and looked at Charlotte with anticipation.
Charlotte saw right through their thoughts and shook her head with a smile: "Your current condition and attire are not suitable for observing, as it may lead to infection of the patient's wounds. Therefore, you will have to wait on the second floor for now. Of course, there will be opportunities like this every day in the future, so there's no need to rush. I will have new clothes made for you."
Although everyone was somewhat disappointed upon hearing this, they did not say anything more.
"Ino, you should be able to cook, right?" Charlotte turned to look at Ino.
Ino paused for a moment, not understanding why Charlotte suddenly asked this, but still nodded and said, "I can cook some home-style dishes."
"Lina, what about you?" Charlotte then turned to look at Lina.
"I know a little bit too," Lina nodded.
"Very good, then you two will be in charge of making lunch today. There are eight people in total. The kitchen is over here, and there's meat and rice." Charlotte led everyone into the kitchen, showed them where the vegetables and rice were placed, and then looked at Amilo and Mellen, "You two will be in charge of tending the fire and helping out."
"this……"
The four elves were all a little confused.
"It's settled then. Hopefully, I can have a hot meal in an hour," Charlotte said with a smile, then turned and left the kitchen.
The elves looked at each other, their faces showing astonishment.
They thought they were coming to the clinic to learn medicine, but when they arrived, their first task was to cook lunch for eight people.
I feel like I've been tricked.
Lina spoke first, "The High Priest and the Saintess wouldn't lie to us. Teacher is just too busy. Let's start cooking. We'll take up half of this food for eight people."
Ino nodded and said, "That's right, let's see what we can make first. I can stew some meat as the main dish."
"Then I'll take care of chopping wood; that's my specialty," Amir said with a smile, pulling out his wood-chopping knife.
"Then I'll have to start a fire." Myron squatted down in front of the stove.
Led by Lina, everyone immediately got to work.
Charlotte took a shower, changed into a white coat, and came out to see the elves busily cooking in the kitchen. A smile appeared on her lips.
That's great. Getting them to work together to accomplish something allows them to quickly get to know and understand each other.
Charlotte went downstairs to find the reception hall packed with people and filled with wails.
Kasha was cleaning wounds and applying medicine to patients with minor injuries. Even Martha, who doesn't usually work at the clinic, was pulled in today to do hard labor, helping to carry some immobile orcs, one in each hand weighing 300 pounds.
"Next..." Vivian came out of the operating room and bumped into Charlotte, who was coming downstairs.
She paused for a moment, then blinked, asking uncertainly, "Boss? Am I hallucinating because I miss you so much?"
"No, I'm back." Charlotte looked at Vivian with some pity. "What happened to you? You don't look well."
In just two days, this girl has visibly lost a lot of weight, looks much more haggard, has a pale face, and walks unsteadily, as if she might collapse at any moment.
"Hey! Boss, you finally decided to come back!" Vivian's eyes widened, and she said angrily, "You just left a note and ran off, leaving me to see so many patients all by myself. Are you even human? Do you know how many patients I saw this morning? A full one hundred and two! I didn't even have time to drink a sip of water, my legs were so weak from hunger, how could I possibly look good?"
The more she talked, the more aggrieved she felt, and tears welled up in her eyes.
"Doctor, is it my turn?" a limping orc patient asked weakly.
"Okay, go in, I'll perform the surgery right away." Vivian sniffed, nodded, and whispered to Charlotte, "Never mind, I'll settle the score with you after I'm done."
After saying that, he turned and followed the patient into the operating room.
Charlotte shook his head helplessly. He was in the wrong. Judging from the patients still queuing outside, including the minor injuries treated by Kasha, the number of patients who came to the clinic today might exceed two hundred.
Vivian must be feeling desperate dealing with so many patients all by herself.
This situation may have been ongoing for three days already.
"Dr. Charlotte, you're finally back."
The patients waiting for their surgeries were also moved when they saw Charlotte.
A flustered Kasha turned around in surprise and gave Charlotte a gentle smile, as if she had suddenly regained her energy.
Martha remained nonchalant and nodded at Charlotte.
"Don't worry, everyone, I'm back. The efficiency of the consultation has doubled, and it will be your turn soon," Charlotte said loudly, so that all the patients waiting in line outside could hear her. Then she led the patient at the front of the line, who had a comminuted fracture of his arm, into the operating room with her.
Charlotte is already very skilled at performing bone reattachment surgery.
After confirming the need for surgery using an X-ray of the finger, the patient is given a bottle of anesthetic. The arm is then disinfected and cleaned, the skin and muscle tissue are cut open to expose the broken bone, the large bone fragments are secured, the fractures are joined together, and then fixed with bone fragments. Finally, the muscles and skin are sutured back together, and the surgery is complete.
That's right, the surgery was not much different from the one I did for that black dog yesterday.
From entering the room to completing the surgery, it took less than ten minutes.
"Alright, surgery complete. The fee is 1650 copper coins. Call the next person in after you leave." Charlotte nudged the still-unconscious orc and forced him to turn on.
"Huh? Oh! That's it? Okay, thank you." The orc got up in a daze, paid the money, looked at his arm that was strapped to his neck with a splint, got up and went out, calling the next patient in as he went.
Charlotte quickly sterilized the operating table and instruments.
Next in came a knight with two deep scratches on his back that almost exposed the bone. Kaisa had already done some basic cleaning and hemostasis, but the wounds still needed to be stitched up.
"Sew it up directly or apply anesthesia?" Charlotte asked, glancing at the wound.
"How much does the anesthetic cost?" the knight asked.
"800 copper coins each."
"Just sew it on, I'm not afraid of pain," the knight said through gritted teeth.
"Then bear with it." Charlotte didn't force him, took a bottle of cleaning solution, and carefully cleaned his wound again.
The knight grimaced in pain, but clenched his teeth tightly and didn't let out a scream.
"What happened today? So many wounded?" Charlotte took out a suture needle and began stitching up his wound, asking as she did so to distract him.
"Hiss—it's not just today, the outskirts of the wilderness have been in chaos these past few days. We're constantly encountering level four or five magical beasts, and low-level adventurers are suffering heavy casualties. I personally witnessed a small mercenary group wiped out; eight people, not one survived," the knight remarked with a sigh.
"Since it's so fierce, why are you rushing to send it up? Usually, things will get better in a few days," Charlotte asked doubtfully. He was just a mid-level knight, and when he encountered a level four magical beast, he was just a pushover.
The knight chuckled and said, "Danger and opportunity go hand in hand. Most of the monsters lingering on the outskirts are wounded magical beasts. If you could get your hands on a level 5 magical beast's core, you could live in Amman Street for the entire winter, with good wine and meat served to you every day, and a different bride every night. It would be so awesome."
"That's a good deal." Charlotte smiled slightly. This gambling mentality will eventually lead to his demise in the wilderness.
However, adventurers venturing into the wilderness are always risking their lives, and if they can pull off a big heist and then rest for several months, anyone would go crazy.
In just three minutes, Charlotte stitched up his wound, applied a suitable amount of hemostatic medicine, and the wound began to scab over quickly.
"Alright, that's 500 copper coins in total," Charlotte said while cleaning the suture needles.
"That's it?" The knight was taken aback. He had prepared himself for intense pain, but all he expected was a brief tightening of the wound on his back, which ended in no time.
Charlotte instructed, "Don't get your back wet during this time, and don't practice swordsmanship to avoid reopening the wound."
As the knight took out his money, he exclaimed, "Your medical skills are truly superb, your fees are fair, and your medical ethics are exemplary."
"Take care of your wound, and when you leave, call in the next patient for me," Charlotte said with a smile after taking the money.
With Charlotte in the operating room, the speed of patient reception more than doubled.
The remaining thirty or so patients were all treated in an hour and a half.
Vivian was half-carried, half-supported by Martha, and slumped in a chair, looking utterly dejected.
Charlotte turned off the operating lights, came out of the operating room, and solemnly announced to Vivian, "Dr. Vivian, after these three days of training, I believe you are fully capable of handling things independently. From today onwards, you are officially promoted to Deputy Chief Physician of the Abyss Medical Clinic."
Vivian raised her eyelids slightly and pursed her lips, saying, "I'm the associate chief physician, and you're the chief physician. What's the difference between now and before?"
"The difference is huge. Before, I was a doctor, and you were an assistant doctor. This is a promotion of two levels for you all at once," Charlotte said seriously.
Vivian rolled her eyes: "Heh, what's the use of being a deputy director? I'm just one of your underlings, and nobody is under my command."
"That's how it used to be, but starting today, things will be different." Charlotte's lips curled up in a smile.
"What do you mean? Have you hired any new employees?" Vivian asked, intrigued.
"no."
"Hey—" Vivian slumped back into her chair, completely giving up.
Charlotte smiled and said, "I didn't hire any new employees, but I took on four students who will study medicine with me at the clinic."
"Really?" Vivian jumped up and leaned close to Charlotte. "You mean, you took on four students to learn surgery and treat patients from you?"
Although Charlotte kept Kasha and Martha with her, neither of them studied medicine and they were not under her jurisdiction.
Upon hearing this, Kasha and Martha looked at Charlotte with some surprise.
"That's right, and there are four elves." Charlotte nodded.
Vivian's eyes widened in surprise. "This is outrageous! Is it a gift from Master Benjamin? Where is it? Didn't you bring it back?"
"That's right, they were brought back from the Elf Forest. They're upstairs making lunch right now, giving them their first task after they became apprentices." Charlotte pointed upstairs.
The three girls were stunned upon hearing this.
Vivian swallowed hard, looking at Charlotte with an absurd expression: "So, you kidnapped four elves from the Elf Forest, told them they were here to learn medicine, and the first thing you did upon arriving in the Abyss was to have them make you lunch?"
"Wouldn't this be a bit inappropriate?" Kasha asked in a low voice.
"It's alright, students need to get more experience." Charlotte smiled nonchalantly and said, "We should be almost done. Let's go have lunch. I'm getting a little hungry. Let's try some elven cuisine."
Vivian suddenly grabbed Kasha and said seriously, "Kasha, wait a minute, help me fix my hair. It's the first time I'm meeting a student, my hairstyle can't be messed up."
"Is it really necessary to be so nervous?" Martha asked, puzzled.
Vivian smiled and shook her head: "You don't understand. The boss is the chief physician, their teacher. So, as the associate chief physician, shouldn't they call me 'Junior Uncle'?"
Look at the smug look on her face; her mouth is practically stretched to her ears.
"Speaking of which, you were also taught by me, so they should call you senior sister," Charlotte corrected.
"You want me to call you teacher?" Vivian raised an eyebrow and pondered, "Then I'll have to discuss it with my master."
"Forget it, don't let your master bother me." Charlotte waved his hand directly. He didn't want to argue with Adolf about the issue of discipleship. Vivian was his precious darling now, and anyone who tried to interfere would be beaten to death by him.
Moreover, his previous promotion of Vivian to associate chief physician was originally intended to allow Vivian to tutor his students when she had free time, thus sharing some of the teaching burden.
Kasa tidied Vivian's hair and gave her a bottle of Golden Stamina Potion. Although she wasn't radiant, her complexion looked much better, and at least she didn't need Martha to support her anymore.
"Let's go, let's see how this year's students are." Vivian walked up the stairs with her head held high.
Charlotte followed behind her. Although she was trying her best to project an imposing aura, her height was insufficient, so she didn't look like a deputy director at all. Instead, she looked... kind of cute.
As you turn the corner of the stairs, the aroma of stewed meat wafts over.
"It smells so good!" Vivian's nose twitched slightly, and her expression immediately broke down. Hunger and the desire for delicious food overcame her reason.
She had performed over a hundred surgeries that morning and was completely drained. One bottle of Golden Energy Potion was simply not enough to fill her emptiness. All she wanted now was to eat meat and rice in large quantities!
As I approached the kitchen door, two elves were ladling food from a pot into bowls.
Vivian's gaze was completely drawn to the large pot of stew on the table, and she swallowed hard, making a clear sound of saliva being swallowed.
The footsteps caught Lina and the others' attention. Seeing Charlotte and the three beautiful girls arriving at the door, they quickly greeted them respectfully, "Teacher."
Their greetings forced Vivian to look away from the stew on the table. Her eyes lit up – they really were four elves!
It's just... a bit older, and not quite the clever and cute little elf she had imagined.
However, the two elf ladies are both incredibly elegant and beautiful.
"Well, let me introduce you to the staff of the clinic." Charlotte nodded and pointed to Vivian, saying, "This is Vivian, the deputy chief physician of the clinic, an all-around doctor who can handle things on her own."
"Dr. Vivian," the four of them called out respectfully. The doctor looked young, but seemed to be very skilled.
Vivian smiled and waved her hand, saying, "No need to be so formal. Actually, I'm your teacher's junior sister. You can just call me Junior Martial Aunt."
Everyone was slightly taken aback.
Lina was the first to call out, "Junior Uncle."
The other three quickly followed.
Vivian smiled broadly and nodded, saying, "Okay, okay, I'll take good care of you from now on. If you don't understand anything, you can always come and ask Junior Uncle for advice."
"This is Kasha, who is in charge of drug sales," Charlotte continued.
"You can just call me Kasha," Kasha said with a smile.
"Sister Kasha, are you a mermaid?" Ino asked Kasha curiously.
"Yes, I am a sea creature." Kasha nodded.
The four elves' eyes lit up. The sea creatures were very mysterious to them. The Elf Forest was far from the sea, and this was the first time they had ever seen a sea creature, especially a gentle and beautiful mermaid.
"And this is...?"
"I'm Martha," Martha answered quickly. "I work at the clinic."
Everyone greeted her, and they were also quite curious about this lion girl.
She looks very young, but she gives off a very powerful feeling.
"And this is Anna, our clinic's mascot." Charlotte then introduced the silly dog, who was currently squatting on a chair, intently studying the dog that had rolled over and was fast asleep on the floor.
Milo's dog really does sleep wherever it goes, and has an enviable quality of sleep.
The elves nodded. Anna had arrived earlier while they were cooking. She wasn't shy at all, but she was quite aloof. She wouldn't even glance at the meat thrown in front of her. You had to feed her directly to her mouth with your hands before she would reluctantly take a bite.
After introducing the medical staff, Charlotte looked at the four elves and said, "Alright, you can introduce yourselves now. We'll be spending a lot of time together from now on."
Since they were already there, they decided to make the best of it. The four exchanged glances and then picked up their luggage and followed.
