I opened a clinic in the Abyss World
Chapter 256 Welcome to the Abyss
The white roc with a wingspan of over two hundred meters is recognized by all the elves of the Elf City. It is the High Priest's exclusive mount, attracting much attention.
The roc went to the south of the city first, hovering above Lina's wooden house. The elves, who were puzzled, came out of their houses and looked at the white roc that had never been there before. Could it be that the high priest had arrived?
Lina was also among the onlookers.
"Lina, take your things and let's go." Charlotte walked to the roc's wing and looked down at Lina, who was looking up at her.
"Dr. Charlotte!" Lina was taken aback. She hadn't expected Charlotte to pick her up in such a cool way, and she quickly agreed.
"Lina, is this person here to pick you up?"
Are you going on a long trip?
"Where are Jesse and Allen?"
The neighbors started gossiping and looked at Lina with curiosity.
"Jesse and Allen have received funding from the temple to attend the Elf Academy. I'm going to study medicine in Kalva for three years. Thank you all for your care over the years, uncles and aunts." Lina bowed deeply to her neighbors, then turned and ran inside to get her luggage.
"This child is going to study medicine? Won't he become a doctor in the future? That's really promising."
"I've always thought this child was clever. Over the years, he's raised his younger brother and sister all by himself, enduring a lot of hardship, but he's finally made it through."
"Jesse and Allen are going to the Elf Academy, they're sure to have a bright future, but my child won't have that kind of luck."
The neighbors were filled with emotion, but even more so with relief and joy. They had seen all the hardships Lina had endured over the years and had always helped her out. It was as if they were watching their own child go on a long journey, knowing that she was going to Kalva, thousands of miles away.
A short while later, Lina came out of the house carrying a large backpack.
"Lina, take this fruit with you on the way."
"This is your favorite dried fish. You might not be able to get it in Kalva, so bring some with you."
"This rabbit was hunted by your uncle the day before yesterday. Your aunt made rabbit jerky. Take it and eat it. Don't suffer over there."
The neighbors surrounded her with bags and packages, stuffing them directly into Lina's arms and bags.
"No need, no need..." Lina tried to refuse, but was still stuffed full of dried salted fish. Looking at the pile of dried salted fish in front of her, she finally couldn't hold back her tears. Looking at the neighbors who had retreated several meters away, she said emotionally, "I will come back. When I do, I will treat my uncles and aunts."
After saying that, she bowed to everyone again, then, carrying a bunch of local specialties, leaped between the branches and landed on the back of the roc.
Charlotte reached out and grabbed her shoulder to prevent her from slipping, catching the enormous dried salted fish that was slipping from her grasp.
Judging from her nimble figure, she should be an agility-type Pokémon, and her stamina should also be quite good.
However, these neighbors were too honest; they brought dozens of items that almost overwhelmed her small frame, making it difficult for her to stand.
"How about I put them away for you first, and return them to you when we get to the Abyss?" Charlotte and Lina said.
"Okay, thank you." Lina nodded. If Charlotte hadn't caught her, she would have fallen flat on her face.
Charlotte waved her hand and put the pile of scattered local specialties in Lina's hand into her spatial ring.
Lina stared in shock at the object that had suddenly vanished from her hand, then looked thoughtfully at the ring on Charlotte's hand. "This must be the legendary spatial ring, right? It's really convenient."
"Sit down, you don't need to take this package." Charlotte helped her place the large package next to her feet. There was plenty of seating, and there were only six of them.
"Hello." Lina greeted Betty respectfully before carefully sitting down.
Riding a flying mount was a novel experience for her, especially since it was the High Priest's personal mount, and she was afraid of accidentally getting it dirty.
"Let's go, next stop," Charlotte and Betty said.
The roc gently flapped its wings and flew close to the city wall.
"I heard from Lois that Jesse and Allen have already been settled. Are they getting used to it?" Charlotte asked, looking at Lina.
Lina looked at Charlotte gratefully and said, "Thank you so much for your and Her Highness's help. Jesse and Allen have already enrolled in the Elf Academy. They live very close to the academy and are being taken care of by the temple staff. She's a kind older sister, and they'll adapt well."
"That's good." Charlotte nodded. Children from poor families don't have many fuss oversights, and Lois's arrangements have far exceeded their expectations.
Myron's residence was not far from Lina's, right next to the small market. A roc hovered above a large tree, and on the treetop was a small wooden house swaying in the wind.
Hearing the noise, the door of the cabin opened, and Myron stood in the doorway, staring blankly at the huge shadow cast by the roc above.
The yellow mongrel huddled at his feet, trembling.
"Myron, it's time to go," Charlotte said with a smile as she approached the wings.
"Dr. Charlotte!" Myron's eyes lit up, and she immediately said, "Wait a moment! I'll be right there."
Myron turned and went inside. A moment later, he came out carrying a small bag, picked up the lame mongrel, locked the door, but looking at the roc suspended five or six meters in the air, he hesitated: "I...I can't get up here."
"He's a magician's apprentice," Charlotte explained to Betty with a smile.
Upon hearing this, Betty had no choice but to let the roc descend a little further. Charlotte jumped onto a tree and carried him onto the bird's back.
With a flap of its wings, the roc flew westward towards the city.
Standing on the bird's back, Myron's legs trembled, his wheat-colored face paled, and he said in a slightly trembling voice, "Th...thank you."
Charlotte laughed and said, "Are you afraid of heights, or are you afraid of this roc?"
"I'm a little afraid of heights, and I'm also a little scared," Myron replied somewhat embarrassedly.
"So you still live in the treetops? Aren't you afraid to climb 300 meters up a tree with your dog on your back?" Charlotte asked in surprise.
"Elves are born with the ability to climb trees, so they're not that afraid," Myron shook his head and chuckled somewhat憨厚ly. "The main thing is that living in the treetops is cheaper, which saves us a lot of money each month."
Charlotte remained silent. If it weren't for the lack of money, who would want to live in a house that rocked like a ship at sea every day? She gestured and said, "Sit down. We'll pick up two more people, and then we'll officially set off."
"Okay." Myron nodded, and carefully sat down, placing the still somewhat bewildered dog at his feet. Then he greeted Lina, who was sitting next to him, "Hello, I'm Myron."
"Hello, Lina." Lina nodded slightly.
Amir lived in a bamboo forest and built a small bamboo house.
When the roc flew over the bamboo forest, it also attracted a lot of attention.
Upon hearing that they were there to pick up Varmilo, the conversation turned somewhat sour.
"Why is it this kid we're picking up? What incredible luck did he have?"
"Exactly, that kid wasn't very bright. He was too honest with his products and the prices were cheap. It's good that he's gone."
Amilo, carrying a basket on his back, ascended the roc amidst the envious gazes of his neighbors. Then, he turned and waved to them, saying, "Neighbors, I, Amilo, will not be coming back!"
Charlotte could tell that Amiro was holding back her anger. It seemed that the environment in this community wasn't as good as Lina's; the neighbors weren't as harmonious and friendly.
"Doctor." Amir turned around, his attitude immediately becoming respectful. He then greeted Betty respectfully before taking his seat as Charlotte arranged.
"Hello, I'm Myron, and this is Miss Lina. It seems we're in the same cohort." Myron greeted him first.
"Hello, I'm Amiro," Amiro said quickly.
Charlotte glanced at his empty basket, which contained only a set of clothes and a short-handled woodcutter's knife; he was indeed penniless.
The roc flew for a short while before stopping in front of a large tree.
Before Charlotte could speak, Betty called out, "Ino, it's time to go."
The door to the wooden cabin under the big tree opened, and Ino, carrying a large bag on her back, walked out. Behind her, a middle-aged elf with a cane followed her, limping to the door.
"Father, I'm leaving. Please take good care of yourself." Ino turned around and looked at the elf, her eyes glistening with tears.
"Go, child, don't worry about me, I'll take good care of myself. You must study hard and not waste this precious opportunity," the middle-aged elf said rather sternly.
"Yes, I will." Ino nodded solemnly, bowed deeply to him, stretched out her right hand, and a vine shot out from her sleeve, tied to a branch on the treetop, and then tightened suddenly, pulling her up into the air. With a gentle swing, she landed on the back of the roc.
This move was quite elegant and freehand.
Even Charlotte was somewhat amazed.
The last time he saw someone do this was when Amos took him on an extreme cliff jump.
"Are you a plant-based magician?" Charlotte asked, somewhat surprised.
Ino nodded: "Yes, but he's just a beginner plant-type mage."
"That's good." Charlotte nodded. Although the level was a bit low, at least the profession was correct. If they needed to do some breeding experiments after returning, having Ino assist them would be much more effective.
"Aunt Betty," Ino greeted Betty respectfully again.
"Sit down, child, we need to get ready to leave," Betty said, looking at her with a sense of relief.
"Mm." Ino nodded, obediently sat down in the empty seat next to Lina, and then greeted the three of them with a smile, "Hello, I'm Ino."
"I am Lina," Lina said, nodding slightly.
"I am Myron."
"I am Varmilo."
The four of them got to know each other briefly, and the atmosphere was quite nice.
The girls' luggage was indeed visibly much more than the men's.
After everyone was seated, the roc flapped its wings and began to rise into the air, flying westward.
As the ground began to recede into the distance, the entire city of elves was revealed to everyone.
The four watched in amazement. Before this, they had never had such an opportunity to see the city where they had lived for more than ten years from this angle.
When their house became a tiny dot, they felt their own insignificance and the vastness of the Elf City.
Soon, the roc flew over the city wall and entered the Elf Forest.
The scenery beyond the high walls was something they had never seen before.
With little strength and no family background, the Iron Wall protected them, but also locked them in.
Overlooking the colorful Fairy Forest, everyone's eyes shone with light. Such a breathtaking view was only a wall away from them.
Charlotte looked at them, this group of green and curious young people, wondering what they would be like when they returned to the Elf Forest three years later.
The roc flew through the Elf Forest, and the scenery became monotonous, and the initial excitement of the group subsided considerably.
"Dr. Charlotte, how should we address you from now on?" Lina asked Charlotte respectfully.
The other three also sat up straight and looked at Charlotte.
Charlotte thought about it seriously for a while and said, "Since you are learning medicine from me, then you shall call me teacher."
"Yes, Professor Charlotte," Lina said respectfully.
"Teacher Charlotte," the other three addressed her respectfully, their eyes filled with reverence.
Charlotte looked at them and suddenly felt a heavier burden on her shoulders.
Teacher, that's a very weighty title.
As for why she didn't let them call her "Master," Charlotte was thinking that if she recruited more students in the future, or even opened an Abyss Medical School, it would be a bit awkward if everyone called her "Master."
It might be more comfortable to interact with them as a teacher-student relationship from the beginning.
Of course, more importantly, taking on apprentices creates a strong bond; if something happens to your apprentice, you, as the master, will definitely be involved.
He wants to promote surgical techniques, which inevitably means he'll recruit many students, and there's no guarantee that one or two of them won't have bad character.
If a teacher is only instructing students in skills, then upon graduation, they can be told: "If you cause trouble in the future, just don't mention your teacher."
Seeing that the four of them had stopped stretching and looked quite nervous, Charlotte smiled and said, "Alright, don't be so reserved. Once the novelty wears off, go take a nap. It's a four-hour flight back."
After saying that, he pulled the small blanket over himself and went straight to sleep.
The four looked at each other, and seeing that Charlotte was really asleep, they all slowly lay down, but still couldn't help but curiously look at the outside world.
Charlotte was awakened by the exclamation, and when she opened her eyes, Calva was already in sight.
Those two towering towers are equally magnificent even during the day when visibility is excellent.
"I've heard that the lighthouse in Calva burns all night, illuminating the entire city as if it were daytime," Myron exclaimed.
"This lighthouse is so tall and big. It must be spectacular at night," Ino couldn't help but exclaim.
Lina and Amiro both looked on in amazement.
Unlike the Elf City, which is built in the forest, the city of Kalva has countless different houses, some huge and magnificent, some small and exquisite, some wooden houses, some stone houses, and some even houses built with seashells.
However, before it even reached the walls of Karva, the roc changed direction and swooped down towards a black gap in front of Karva.
Beneath the crevice lay a hidden world, shrouded in mist, obscuring everything beyond a hundred meters. The air carried a damp, musty smell, and the darkness was impenetrable.
With its wings spread wide, the roc hovered steadily above Bacca Street, near the third-floor balcony of the clinic.
The enormous shadow it cast covered half the street, drawing the bewildered gazes of the neighbors.
"Welcome to the Abyss." Charlotte stood up, looked at the bewildered students, and said with a smile.
Clearly, this seems to be somewhat different from their expectations.
The joy and amazement I felt upon seeing Kalva have now turned into astonishment and bewilderment.
"Teacher, is this... is this the Abyss? It truly lives up to its name." Myron stood up, offering an awkward yet polite smile.
"That's right, this is the Abyss, which is just a stone's throw from Kalva. It's known as a place of chaos and disorder." Charlotte nodded with a smile, and seeing the visibly growing fear on the faces of the four people, she smiled and said, "Of course, this is the Abyss of the past. The Abyss of the present has been transformed into a city, managed by a council, and maintained by the Abyss Guard to keep order. It has a completely new look."
Everyone breathed a sigh of relief upon hearing this. The Elf City was known as the safest city, and even though they lived at the bottom of society, they had always been well protected.
Charlotte's smile vanished, and she said seriously, "However, I still have to warn you, while living here, do not trust anyone outside the clinic. After dark, do not go out, stay in your dormitories, and do not wander around the streets and alleys outside of Bacca Street, especially those alleys that look mysterious and secluded, as there may be a murderer hiding there."
"Understood." Seeing Charlotte's unprecedentedly serious expression, the four of them stiffened, quickly stood up, and nodded solemnly.
Charlotte's expression softened slightly, and she pointed towards the balcony, saying, "Move your things downstairs. This is our clinic, and also where you will study for the next three years."
The four of them quickly got to work, carrying their luggage and jumping onto the balcony three meters away.
Milo, holding the dog, stood by the wings with a flushed face, hesitating for a long time before daring not to jump.
Finally, Ino tied a vine around his waist and, with Amiro's help, slid him down.
"Thank you, thank you." Myron stood on the ground, expressing his gratitude repeatedly, deeply moved.
"Thank you for escorting me," Charlotte said, looking at Betty with gratitude.
"It's nothing." Betty quickly waved her hand, glanced at Ino standing on the balcony, but still didn't say anything about asking Charlotte to take good care of her.
Charlotte smiled and said, "Don't worry, I will treat all students equally and do my best to ensure they learn something. After a year, I will give them a month's leave so they can take turns returning to the Elf City to visit their families."
"Okay, thank you." Betty smiled slightly. He was indeed a warm person; no wonder Her Highness liked him so much.
Charlotte turned around and jumped from the roc onto the balcony.
Betty looked at the four young elves standing on the balcony and said, "Study hard, the future of the elves belongs to you."
The four elves bowed to her in unison.
Betty returned their salute with a knightly salute.
The roc spread its wings and soared into the sky.
"What a huge bird!"
"What do you know? This is a high-level magical beast! This giant roc is probably level six or seven. Only super big shots can tame a magical beast of this level."
"I think that roc brought Dr. Charlotte back. Doesn't that mean he's latched onto another super-powerful patron?"
I'm pretty sure I'm right.
A gasp of amazement filled the streets of Bacca.
Half of the praise was for how big the bird was, and the other half was for Charlotte for actually riding back in such a big bird.
This posture evokes the feeling of being the first person to drive a car back to the village back in the day.
The roc went to the south of the city first, hovering above Lina's wooden house. The elves, who were puzzled, came out of their houses and looked at the white roc that had never been there before. Could it be that the high priest had arrived?
